Abstract:In this letter, we revisit the non-restricted half-duplex Gaussian amplify-and-forward two-way relay channel (AF-TWRC). The inner and outer bounds of its capacity region are derived by evaluating Shannon's inner and outer bounds for general two-way channels. We prove that, in contrast to the case of Gaussian two-way channel (GTWC) where the two bounds coincide thus establishing its capacity region, the two bounds of AF-TWRC do not coincide unless both terminals are noise-free, due to that the intermediate relay node introduces additional power constraint relating to the correlation of channel inputs from both terminals. This indicates that the capacity region of non-restricted Gaussian AF-TWRC, which was previously believed to be already established in a way similar to that of GTWC, still remains open. We further investigate a special case of non-restricted AF-TWRC where the relay is noise-free, and obtain its capacity region based on the tighter dependence balance bound.
Ergodic Channel Capacity Analysis Of The Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Single Frequency Network

Abstract:In this paper, the ergodic channel capacity is analyzed for a hybrid satellite-terrestrial single frequency network (SFN), which consists of a satellite (the source node), a mobile terminal (the destination node), and several gap fillers (the relay nodes) on the ground. The satellite-relay (S-R) link and the satellite-destination (S-D) link experience independent Rician fading, and the relay-destination (R-D) link experiences Nakagami-tn fading. Based on the classical conclusions in multipath fading channels, the exact closed-form expression of the ergodic channel capacity for a hybrid satellite-terrestrial SFN with the decode-and-forward cooperative protocol is derived. The numerical results agree well with the simulation results. As the total transmit power of all nodes is assumed to be limited, the performance of hybrid satellite-terrestrial SFN is better than that of the no-relay system when the S-D link is in heavy-fading.

Abstract:This paper studies the transceiver design of the Gaussian two-pair two-way relay channel (TWRC), where two pairs of users exchange information through a common relay in a pairwise manner. Our main contribution is to show that our scheme can achieve the capacity of the two-pair TWRC to within 1 2 bit per user. In the proof, we develop a hybrid coding scheme involving Gaussian random coding, nested lattice coding, superposition coding, and network-coded decoding. Further, we present a message-reassembling strategy to decouple the coding design for the user-to-relay and relay-to-user links, so as to provide more flexibility to fully exploit the channel randomness. We also show that judicious power allocation among the superimposed codeword components at the relay is needed to approach the channel capacity.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the full-duplex and half-duplex Gaussian relay channels where the noises at the relay and destination are arbitrarily correlated. We first derive the capacity upper bound and the achievable rates with three existing schemes: Decode-and-Forward (DF), Compress-and-Forward (CF), and Amplify-and-Forward (AF). We present two capacity results under specific noise correlation coefficients, one being achieved by DF and the other being achieved by direct link transmission (or a special case of CF). The channel for the former capacity result is equivalent to the traditional Gaussian degraded relay channel and the latter corresponds to the Gaussian reversely-degraded relay channel. For CF and AF schemes, we show that their achievable rates are strictly decreasing functions of the correlation coefficient when the correlation coefficient is negative. Moreover, when the noise correlation coefficient is positive, the CF achievable rate may also outperform the independent-noise case if the noise correlation coefficient is within a certain range. Through numerical comparisons under different channel settings, we observe that although DF completely disregards the noise correlation while the other two can potentially exploit such extra information, none of the three relay schemes always outperforms the others over different correlation coefficients. Moreover, the exploitation of noise correlation by CF and AF accrues more benefit when the source-relay link is weak. This paper also considers the optimal power allocation problem under the correlated-noise channel setting. With individual power constraints at the relay and the source, it is shown that the relay should use all its available power to maximize the achievable rates under any correlation coefficient. With a total power constraint across the source and the relay, the achievable rates are proved to be concave functions over the power allocation factor for AF and CF under full-duplex mode, where the cl- - osed-form power allocation strategy is derived.
Gaussian Z-Interference Channel with a Relay Link: Achievability Region and Asymptotic Sum Capacity

Abstract:This paper studies a Gaussian Z-interference channel with a rate-limited digital relay link from one receiver to another. Achievable rate regions are derived based on a combination of Han-Kobayashi common-private information splitting technique and several different relay strategies including compress-and-forward and a partial decode-and-forward strategy, in which the interference is partially decoded then binned and forwarded through the digital link for subtraction at the other end. For the Gaussian Z-interference channel with a digital link from the interference-free receiver to the interfered receiver, the capacity region is established in the strong interference regime; an achievable rate region is established in the weak interference regime. In the weak interference regime, the partial decode-and-forward strategy is shown to be asymptotically sum-capacity achieving in the high signal-to-noise ratio and high interference-to-noise ratio limit. In this case, each relay bit asymptotically improves the sum capacity by one bit. For the Gaussian Z-interference channel with a digital link from the interfered receiver to the interference-free receiver, the capacity region is established in the strong interference regime; achievable rate regions are established in the moderately strong and weak interference regimes. In addition, the asymptotically sum capacity is established in the limit of large relay link rate. In this case, the sum capacity improvement due to the digital link is bounded by half a bit when the interference link is weaker than certain threshold, but the sum capacity improvement becomes unbounded as the interference link becomes stronger.

A Deterministic Approach to Wireless Relay Networks

Abstract:We present a deterministic channel model which captures several key features of multiuser wireless communication. We consider a model for a wireless network with nodes connected by such deterministic channels, and present an exact characterization of the end-to-end capacity when there is a single source and a single destination and an arbitrary number of relay nodes. This result is a natural generalization of the max-flow min-cut theorem for wireline networks. Finally to demonstrate the connections between deterministic model and Gaussian model, we look at two examples: the single-relay channel and the diamond network. We show that in each of these two examples, the capacity-achieving scheme in the corresponding deterministic model naturally suggests a scheme in the Gaussian model that is within 1 bit and 2 bit respectively from cut-set upper bound, for all values of the channel gains. This is the first part of a two-part paper; the sequel [1] will focus on the proof of the max-flow min-cut theorem of a class of deterministic networks of which our model is a special case.

Abstract:In cellular system, cooperative relay technique can improve the performance of multicast within a cell tremendously, but cause frequent interruption of multicast stream because of the mobility of relay terminals. A stream layered cooperative relay scheme is proposed as a possible approach to resolve this problem. As a fundamental research, this paper focuses on the capacity of Gaussian layered multi-relay channel which can satisfy the proposed scheme. After deducing the capacity expression of single and double relay channel, a multirelay channel capacity is given and proved to be achievable by induction. At last, some performance analysis and simulation results show the signification of the capacity study in this paper. Notice that, the approach to study the capacity for layered multirelay channel in this paper can be extended to other layering schemes conveniently.

We observe that although DF completely disregards the noise correlation while the other two could exploit such extra information, none of the three relay schemes always outperforms the others over different correlation coefficients; however, the exploitation of noise correlation by CF and AF leads to more significant benefit when the source-relay channel is weak. It is further shown that a negative noise correlation is always helpful for AF. We also establish two capacity-achieving results under two special noise correlation coefficients, with one being achieved by DF and the other being achieved by direct link transmission (or a special case of CF), which correspond to the capacity results for the traditional Gaussian degraded relay channel and the Gaussian reversely-degraded one.

Abstract:Although extensively investigated, the capacity of the two-hop half-duplex (HD) relay channel is not fully understood. In particular, a capacity expression which can be evaluated straightforwardly is not available and an explicit coding scheme which achieves the capacity is not known either. In this paper, we derive a new expression for the capacity of the two-hop HD relay channel based on a simplified converse. Compared to previous results, this capacity expression can be easily evaluated. Moreover, we propose an explicit coding scheme which achieves the capacity. To achieve the capacity, the relay does not only send information to the destination by transmitting information-carrying symbols but also with the zero symbols resulting from the relay's silence during reception. As examples, we compute the capacities of the two-hop HD relay channel for the cases when the source-relay and relay-destination links are both binary-symmetric channels (BSCs) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels, respectively, and numerically compare the capacities with the rates achieved by conventional relaying where the relay receives and transmits in a codeword-by-codeword fashion and switches between reception and transmission in a strictly alternating manner. Our numerical results show that the capacities of the two-hop HD relay channel for BSC and AWGN links are significantly larger than the rates achieved with conventional relaying.

Abstract:Non-ergodicity limits the utilization of Shannon capacity in mobile Ad hoc networks (MANET). Three definitions of function capacity, outage capacity and expected capacity in network information theory are narrated. Multiple-input and multiple-output, relay and conferencing are usually adopted for cooperation in MANET to tackle the problems of dynamic channel state information and non-equilibrium. The capacity, which is the fundamental performance upper bound, together with layerless dynamic network design and combined optimization are three key issues when considering usability and utility in MANET. These three research areas comprise an interdisciplinary approach beyond traditional Shannon theory that could hold much promise for breakthroughs in establishing the fundamental performance limits of wireless ad hoc networks and the applications that utilize them.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of an additional relay node on the secrecy of broadcast channels by considering the model of relay broadcast channels with confidential messages. We show that this additional relay node can increase the achievable secrecy rate region of the broadcast channels with confidential messages. More specifically, first, we investigate the discrete memoryless relay broadcast channels with two confidential messages and one common message. Three inner bounds (with respect to decode-forward, generalized noise-forward and compress-forward strategies) and an outer bound on the capacity-equivocation region are provided. Second, we investigate the discrete memoryless relay broadcast channels with two confidential messages. Inner and outer bounds on the capacity-equivocation region are provided. Finally, we investigate the discrete memoryless relay broadcast channels with one confidential message and one common message. Inner and outer bounds on the capacity-equivocation region are provided, and the results are further explained via a Gaussian example. Compared with Csiszar-Korner's work on broadcast channels with confidential messages (BCC), we find that with the help of the relay node, the secrecy capacity region of the Gaussian BCC is enhanced.

Abstract:The capacity region of general Multiple-Access Relay Channel (MARC) has long been an open question. In this paper, we consider MARC with orthogonal components, where the channel from the source senders to the relay node is orthogonal to the channel from the source senders and relay to the destination. We give the capacity theorem for the discrete memoryless MARC with orthogonal components. Based on the result, we obtain the capacity region of frequency-division Gaussian MARC. The optimal power allocation for the source nodes to allocate power on different frequencies is investigated. Numerical results show that the optimal allocation of power can achieve the maximum sum rate.

Abstract:We consider a communication system where a relay helps transmission of messages from {a} sender to {a} receiver. The relay is considered not only as a helper but as a wire-tapper who can obtain some knowledge about transmitted messages. In this paper we study a relay channel with confidential messages(RCC), where a sender attempts to transmit common information to both a receiver and a relay and also has private information intended for the receiver and confidential to the relay. The level of secrecy of private information confidential to the relay is measured by the equivocation rate, i.e., the entropy rate of private information conditioned on channel outputs at the relay. The performance measure of interest for the RCC is the rate triple that includes the common rate, the private rate, and the equivocation rate as components. The rate-equivocation region is defined by the set that consists of all these achievable rate triples. In this paper we give two definitions of the rate-equivocation region. We first define the rate-equivocation region in the case of deterministic encoder and call it the deterministic rate-equivocation region. Next, we define the rate-equivocation region in the case of stochastic encoder and call it the stochastic rate-equivocation region. We derive explicit inner and outer bounds for the above two regions. On the deterministic/stochastic rate-equivocation region we present two classes of relay channels where inner and outer bounds match. We also evaluate the deterministic and stochastic rate-equivocation regions of the Gaussian RCC.

Abstract: This paper investigates the capacity of a wireless two-way relay channel in which two end nodes exchange information via a relay node. The capacity is defined in the information-theoretic sense as the maximum information exchange rate between the two end nodes. We give an upper bound of the capacity by applying the cut-set theorem. We prove that this upper bound can be approached in low SNR region using “separated” multiple access for uplinks from the end nodes to the relay in which the data from the end nodes are individually decoded at the relay; and network-coding broadcast for downlinks from the relay to the end nodes in which the relay mixes the information from end nodes before forwarding. We further prove that the capacity is approachable in high SNR region using physical-layer network coding (PNC) multiple access for uplinks, and network-coding broadcast for downlinks. From our proof and observations, we conjecture that the upper bound may be achieved with PNC in all SNR regions.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic capacity of a half-duplex large fading relay network, which consists of one source node, one destination node, and N relay nodes. The relay nodes are assumed to be randomly deployed in a given area and subject to independent random failures (e.g., due to fatal random physical attacks) with probability p. With a total power constraint on all the nodes, we examine the performance of the decode-and-forward (DF) strategy when N tends to infinity, assuming zero or perfect forward link channel state information (CSI) at the relays, respectively. For the noncoherent relay scheme, we study the ε-outage capacity. The multiple access (MAC) cut-set upper bound and the achievable rate (i.e, the lower bound) are derived with the optimal power allocation between the source and relays. It is proved that the DF strategy is asymptotically optimal as the outage probability goes to zero. Given the random attacks, it is shown that there is less than a p-fraction achievable rate loss in the low SNR regime and a constant loss in the high SNR regime. For the coherent relay scheme, we study the ergodic capacity. It is shown that the capacity upper bound scales as O(log (SNRN)), while the DF achievable rate scales as O(log (SNR log(N))). Finally, we discuss the optimal power allocation strategy among the relays.

Abstract:In full-duplex Gaussian relay channels, neither Decode-and-Forward (DF) nor Compress-and-Forward (CF) can achieve a larger rate than the other for all the channel gain combinations. Combining DF and CF strategies, we show that a new achievable rate, which is the concave envelop of the maximal rate achieved by DF and CF with respect to the source power, is achievable. To this end, we actively adjust the transmission power of the source for different time and switch the transmission strategy between DF and CF according to the source power. It is proved that when the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the source-destination link falls into a certain range, the new achievable rate is strictly larger than that achieved by pure DF and pure CF. The optimal power allocation and corresponding time proportions are also obtained. Numerical results show that the new achievable rate is also competitive with the rate achieved by superposing CF on DF. As strategy switching avoids complex codeword constructions, it is more practical than superposition structures to be implemented in relay systems.
Approaching Gaussian Relay Network Capacity in the High SNR Regime: End-to-End Lattice Codes

Abstract:We present a natural and low-complexity technique for achieving the capacity of the Gaussian relay network in the high SNR regime. Specifically, we propose the use of end-to-end structured lattice codes with the amplify-and-forward strategy, where the source uses a nested lattice code to encode the messages and the destination decodes the messages by lattice decoding. All intermediate relays simply amplify and forward the received signals over the network to the destination. We show that the end-to-end lattice-coded amplify-and-forward scheme approaches the capacity of the layered Gaussian relay network in the high SNR regime. Next, we extend our scheme to non-layered Gaussian relay networks under the amplify-and-forward scheme, which can be viewed as a Gaussian intersymbol interference (ISI) channel. Compared with other schemes, our approach is significantly simpler and requires only the end-to-end design of the lattice precoding and decoding. It does not require any knowledge of the network topology or the individual channel gains.

Abstract:We consider the arbitrarily varying Gaussian relay channel with sender frequency division. We determine the random code capacity, and establish lower and upper bounds on the deterministic code capacity. It is observed that when the channel input is subject to a low power limit, the deterministic code capacity may be strictly lower than the random code capacity, and the gap vanishes as the input becomes less constrained. A second model addressed in this paper is the general case of primitive arbitrarily varying relay channels. We develop lower and upper bounds on the random code capacity, and give conditions under which the deterministic code capacity coincides with the random code capacity, and conditions under which it is lower. Then, we establish the capacity of the primitive counterpart of the arbitrarily varying Gaussian relay channel with sender frequency division. In this case, the deterministic and random code capacities are the same.
