Abstract:Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski, and Sully, recently claimed that once a black hole has radiated more than half its initial entropy (the Page time), the horizon is replaced by a "firewall" at which infalling observers burn up, in apparent violation of the equivalence principle and the postulates of black hole complementarity. In this paper I review the arguments for firewalls, and give a slightly different interpretation of them. According to this interpretation the horizon has standard properties, but the singularity is non-standard. The growing entanglement of the black hole with Hawking radiation causes the singularity to migrate toward the horizon, and eventually intersect it at the page time. The resulting collision of the singularity with the horizon leads to the firewall. Complementarity applies to the horizon and not to the singular firewall. Almheiri, Marolf, Polchinski, and Sully conjecture that firewalls form much earlier then the Page time; namely at the scrambling time. I argue that there is no reason to believe this generalization, and good reason to think it is wrong. For most of this paper I will assume that the firewall argument is correct. In the last section before the conclusion I will describe reasons for having reservations.

Abstract:We address proposed alternatives to the black hole firewall. We show that embedding the interior Hilbert space of an old black hole into the Hilbert space of the early radiation is inconsistent, as is embedding the semi-classical interior of an AdS black hole into any dual CFT Hilbert space. We develop the use of large AdS black holes as a system to sharpen the firewall argument. We also reiterate arguments that unitary non-local theories can avoid firewalls only if the non-localities are suitably dramatic.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the black hole complementarity and the firewall proposal at length. Black hole complementarity is inevitable if we assume the following five things: unitarity, entropy-area formula, existence of an information observer, semi-classical quantum field theory for an asymptotic observer, and the general relativity for an in-falling observer. However, large N rescaling and the AMPS argument show that black hole complementarity is inconsistent. To salvage the basic philosophy of the black hole complementarity, AMPS introduced a firewall around the horizon. According to large N rescaling, the firewall should be located close to the apparent horizon. We investigate the consistency of the firewall with the two critical conditions: the firewall should be near the time-like apparent horizon and it should not affect the future infinity. Concerning this, we have introduced a gravitational collapse with a false vacuum lump which can generate a spacetime structure with disconnected apparent horizons. This reveals a situation that there is a firewall outside of the event horizon, while the apparent horizon is absent. Therefore, the firewall, if it exists, not only does modify the general relativity for an in-falling observer, but also modify the semi-classical quantum field theory for an asymptotic observer.

Abstract:Several recent papers argue against firewalls by relaxing the requirement for locality outside the stretched horizon. In the firewall argument, locality essentially serves the purpose of ensuring that the degrees of freedom required for infall are those in the proximity of the black hole and not the ones in the early radiation. We make the firewall argument sharper by utilizing the AdS/CFT framework and claim that the firewall argument essentially states that the dual to a thermal state in the CFT is a firewall.

Reframing the Event Horizon: The Harlow-Hayden Computational Approach to the Firewall Paradox

Abstract:This study critically reevaluates the Harlow-Hayden (HH) solution to the black hole information paradox and its articulation in the firewall paradox. The exploration recognizes the HH solution as a revolutionary approach in black hole physics, steering away from traditional constraints to depict the event horizon as a computational rather than a physical barrier. The paper first maps the initial physical dilemma that instigated the HH journey, introducing Alice, an observer facing intricate computational challenges as she approaches the black hole. I then depict the evolution of the narrative, describing how Alice was facilitated with a quantum computer to surmount the computational challenges and further detailing the augmented complexities arising from the integration of the physical dynamics of the black hole. Yet, HH's research applies the AdS/CFT correspondence to explore the dynamic unitary transformation in solving the firewall paradox through decoding Hawking radiation. However, it identifies a contradiction; the eternal perspective of black holes from the AdS/CFT theory challenges the firewall paradox's foundation. Finally, I narrate a paradigm shift as HH reframes Alice's task within the realms of error-correcting codes, illustrating a remarkable transition from a physical problem in black hole physics to a computational predicament in computer science. The study revisits pivotal moments in understanding black hole physics ten years later through this reexamination.

Abstract:There has been much discussion on the possibility of firewalls at the horizon-scale in black hole physics, including questions regarding the presence or absence of firewalls at apparent horizons, such as the Rindler horizon and the horizon of the Poincaré patch of Anti-de Sitter space. We argue against the presence of such apparent firewalls by demonstrating that one recent argument for firewalls in black holes does not extend to these cases. We also include some brief remarks on some claims in the recent firewall literature.

Abstract:The unitary moving mirror model is one of the best quantum systems for checking the reasoning of the original firewall paradox of AMPS in quantum black holes. Though the late-time part of radiations emitted from the mirror is fully entangled with the early-part, no firewall exists with a deadly, huge average energy flux in this model. This is because high-energy entanglement structure of the discretized systems in almost maximally entangled states is modified so as to yield the correct description of low-energy effective field theory. Furthermore, the strong subadditivity paradox of firewalls is resolved using non-locality of general one-particle states and zero-point fluctuation entanglement. Due to the Reeh-Schlieder theorem in quantum field theory, another firewall paradox is inevitably raised with quantum remote measurements in the model. We resolve this paradox from the viewpoint of the energy cost of measurements. No firewall appears, as long as the energy for the measurement is much smaller than the ultraviolet cutoff scale.

Black Hole Firewalls and Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:Firewalls in black holes are easiest to understand by imposing time reversal invariance, together with a unitary evolution law. The best approach seems to be to split up the time span of a black hole into short periods, during which no firewalls can be detected by any observer. Then, gluing together subsequent time periods, firewalls seem to appear, but they can always be transformed away. At all times we need a Hilbert space of a finite dimension, as long as particles far separated from the black hole are ignored. Our conclusion contradicts other findings, particularly a recent paper by Strauss and Whiting. Indeed, the firewall transformation removes the entanglement between very early and very late in- and out-particles, in a far-from-trivial way.

Firewalls at exponentially late times

Abstract:We consider a version of the typical state firewall setup recently reintroduced by Stanford and Yang, who found that wormholes may create firewalls. We examine a late-time double scaling limit in JT gravity in which one can resum the expansion in the number of wormholes, and we use this to study the exact distribution of interior slices at times exponential in the entropy. We consider a thermofield double with and without early perturbations on a boundary. These perturbations can appear on interior slices as dangerous high energy shocks. For exponentially late times, wormholes tend to teleport the particles created by perturbations and render the interior more dangerous. In states with many perturbations separated by large times, the probability of a safe interior is exponentially small. Such states thus almost certainly have firewalls at the horizon, even though they would be safe without wormholes. With perturbation, even in the safest state we conceive, the odds of encountering a firewall are fifty-fifty. One interpretation of the phenomena found here is that wormholes can change time-ordered contours into effective out-of-time-ordered folds, making shockwaves appear in unexpected places.

A Classical Firewall Transformation as a Canonical Transformation

Abstract:The firewall transformation put forward by 't Hooft in recent years has made ambitious claims of solving the firewall problem and the black hole information paradox while maintaining unitary evolution. However, the theory has received limited attention from the community, especially in regards to its foundations in purely classical gravitational physics. This paper investigates the underlying assumptions of 't Hooft's firewall transformation before quantization. We find that the limiting procedure used by 't Hooft in order to obtain an identification of the quantum operators for ingoing and outgoing particles near a black hole is not consistent. We propose a correction, which involves a more relaxed approximation regime. In the new approximation regime, we find a new classical analog for the firewall transformation for spherical shells, which allows evolving the spherical shells' dynamics past their point of collision. In the classical theory, no firewall is removed, as both ingoing and outgoing matter is present on every spacelike hypersurface, and it does not appear that any firewalls will be removed after a canonical quantization.

Abstract:Interest in the black hole information paradox has recently been catalyzed by the newer “firewall” argument. The crux of the updated argument is that previous solutions which relied on observer complementarity are in violation of the quantum condition of monogamy of entanglement, with the prescribed remedy being to discard the equivalence principle in favor of an energy barrier (or firewall) at the black hole horizon. Differing points of view have been put forward, including the “ER = EPR” counterargument and the final-state solution, both of which can be viewed as potential resolutions to the apparent conflict between quantum monogamy and Einstein equivalence. After reviewing these recent developments, this paper argues that the ER = EPR and final-state solutions can—thanks to observer complementarity—be seen as the same resolution of the paradox but from two different perspectives: inside and outside the black hole.

Abstract:We consider the information loss paradox at different angles, from the standard semi-classical approximation of General Relativity to the recently proposed scenarios of black holes evolution caused by effects of gravity quantization. Focusing on the Firewall proposal, we study the loop effects on the geometry and boundary conditions in black hole spacetimes and analyze the energy measured by an infalling observer near their horizons. As a result we obtain a trans-Planckian energy transition for the time-dependent black hole solution on the quantum-induced AdS background, the importance of which for the black hole (in)formation is discussed.

Abstract:A simple, closed-form solution to the Yang-Mills field equations is presented which has a non-Abelian firewall - a spherical "horizon" where the energy density diverges. By the gravity/gauge duality, this non-Abelian firewall implies the existence of a gravitational firewall. Gravitational firewalls have been proposed as a way of resolving the information loss paradox, but at the cost of violating the equivalence principle.

An Exact, Coordinate Independent Classical Firewall Transformation

Abstract:A proposal for resolving the black hole information paradox was recently put forward by 't Hooft in the form of his firewall transformation. Although this proposal has begun to gain some limited traction, its physical foundation is still somewhat obscure. Here we develop a classical Hamiltonian analog, which is oriented towards quantization, by using the canonical formalism developed by Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner (ADM). We use a model of two null, spherical shells in a Schwarzschild black hole background, and within our ADM formalism we are able to characterize the dynamics of the entire system, especially at the point of collision, and we reproduce the related Dray-'t Hooft-Redmount formula. Finally, we are able to find a classical analog for 't Hooft's firewall transformation. Unlike 't Hooft's firewall transformation and previous classical analogs, the classical firewall transformation we obtain is free from approximation and maintains the coordinate independence of the ADM formalism. We leave to future work the quantization of the theory.

Abstract:Black hole firewall paradox is an inconsistency between four postulates in black hole physics: (1) the unitary evolution in quantum systems, (2) application of the semi-classical field theory in low curvature backgrounds, (3) statistical mechanical origin of the black hole entropy, and (4) the equivalence principle in the version of no drama for free-falling observers in the vicinity of the horizon. Based on the existence of the Hawking radiation for the static observers standing outside a Schwarzschild black hole, we show a direct contradiction between the postulates (2) and (4). If there is not a way out of this new problem, it implies the necessity of relaxing one of these two assumptions for resolving the black hole firewall paradox.
