Abstract:The goal of this paper is to make a connection between tropical geometry, representations of quantum affine algebras, and scattering amplitudes in physics. The connection allows us to study important and difficult questions in these areas: (1) We give a systematic construction of prime modules (including prime non-real modules) of quantum affine algebras using tropical geometry. We also introduce new objects which generalize positive tropical Grassmannians. (2) We propose a generalization of Grassmannian string integrals in physics, in which the integrand is no longer a finite, but rather an infinite product indexed by prime modules of a quantum affine algebra. We give a general formula of $u$-variables using prime tableaux (corresponding to prime modules of quantum affine algebras of type $A$) and Auslander-Reiten quivers of Grassmannian cluster categories. (3) We study limit $g$-vectors of cluster algebras. This is another way to obtain prime non-real modules of quantum affine algebras systematically. Using limit $g$-vectors, we construct new examples of non-real modules of quantum affine algebras.

Abstract:Tropical algebraic geometry is the geometry of the tropical semiring $(\mathbb{R},\min,+)$. Its objects are polyhedral cell complexes which behave like complex algebraic varieties. We give an introduction to this theory, with an emphasis on plane curves and linear spaces. New results include a complete description of the families of quadrics through four points in the tropical projective plane and a counterexample to the incidence version of Pappus' Theorem.

Abstract:We explore connections between the category of tropical abelian varieties (tav), $\mathbb{T}\mathcal{A}$, and the the category of tropical curves, $\mathbb{T}\mathcal{C}$, first in a broader context and then specifically by studying the phenomenon of tropical split Jacobians. Jacobians of genus $2$ curves are two-dimensional tav and as such more complicated than their one-dimensional cousins. Whenever $\Gamma$, however, is a covering of an elliptic curve, it so happens that $Jac(\Gamma)$ splits into simpler objects, the direct sum of elliptic curves. This relation is pathological in essentially two ways, the splitting of $Jac(\Gamma)$ is not unique, and it is a priori not clear how to compute it. Similar to algebraic geometry, optimal coverings offer a remedy for both: They resolve indeterminacy as they provide us with a canonical choice. They resolve indeterminability as they provide us with an algorithmic approach. Our methods build on theory developed by Len, Mikhalkin, Röhrle, Ulirsch, Zakharov, Zharkov and many more. In accordance with this heritage, we want to put forth tropical geometry as a setting in which we can see abstraction at work. This means pairing "abstract machinery" with a constructive/algorithmic approach.

Abstract:This text is the write-up of a talk at the Bellairs Workshop in Number Theory on Tropical and Non-Archimedean Geometry that took place at the Bellairs Research Institute, Barbados, in May 2011. The goal of this text is to present recent work by in Diophantine Geometry over function fields due to Gubler and Yamaki, where analytic geometry in the sense of Berkovich plays a significant place. I also give an introduction to basic concepts and notions on Diophantine Geometry, such as heights, the Manin-Mumford conjecture, the Bogomolov conjecture, and its proof by Ullmo and Zhang.

Abstract:Patchworking theorems serve as a basic element of the correspondence between tropical and algebraic curves, which is a core of the tropical enumerative geometry. We present a new version of a patchworking theorem which relates plane tropical curves with complex and real algebraic curves having prescribed multiple points. It can be used to compute Welschinger invariants of non-toric Del Pezzo surfaces.

Abstract:We present applications of tropical geometry to some integrable piecewise-linear maps, based on the lecture given by one of the authors (R. I.) at the workshop "Tropical Geometry and Integrable Systems" (University of Glasgow, July 2011), and on some new results obtained afterward. After a brief review on tropical curve theory, we study the spectral curves and the isolevel sets of the tropical periodic Toda lattice and the periodic Box-ball system.

Geometry of tropical extensions of hyperfields

Abstract:We study the geometry of tropical extensions of hyperfields, including the ordinary, signed and complex tropical hyperfields. We introduce the framework of 'enriched valuations' as hyperfield homomorphisms to tropical extensions, and show that a notable family of them are relatively algebraically closed. Our main results are hyperfield analogues of Kapranov's theorem and the Fundamental theorem of tropical geometry. Utilising these theorems, we introduce fine tropical varieties and prove a structure theorem for them in terms of their initial ideals.

Abstract:Using tropical geometry one can translate problems in enumerative geometry to combinatorial problems. Thus tropical geometry is a powerful tool in enumerative geometry over the complex and real numbers. Results from $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory allow to enrich classical enumerative geometry questions and get answers over an arbitrary field. In the resulting area, $\mathbb{A}^1$-enumerative geometry, the answer to these questions lives in the Grothendieck-Witt ring of the base field $k$. In this paper, we use tropical methods in this enriched set up by showing Bézout's theorem and a generalization, namely the Bernstein-Kushnirenko theorem, for tropical hypersurfaces enriched in $\operatorname{GW}(k)$.

Abstract:Duality of curves is one of the important aspects of the ``classical'' algebraic geometry. In this paper, using this foundation, the duality of tropical polynomials is constructed to introduce the duality of Non-Archimedean curves. Using the development of ``mechanism'' which is based on ``distortion'' values and their matrices, we discuss some aspects refereing to quadrics with respect to their dual objects. This topic includes also the induced dual subdivision of Newton Polytope and its compatible properties. Finally, a regularity of tropical curves in the duality sense is generally defined and, studied for families of tropical quadrics.

We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties and compare it with the compactifications furnished by techniques in algebraic geometry. Abstract:This paper is the third installment in a series of papers devoted to the computation of enumerative invariants of abelian surfaces through the tropical approach. We develop a pearl diagram algorithm similar to the floor diagram algorithm used in toric surfaces that concretely solves the tropical problem. These diagrams can be used to prove specific cases of Oberdieck's multiple cover formula that reduce the computation of invariants for non-primitive classes to the primitive case, getting rid of all diagram considerations and providing short explicit formulas. The latter can be used to prove the quasi-modularity of generating series of classical invariants, and the polynomiality of coefficients of fixed codegree in the refined invariants.

Abstract:Toric varieties are perhaps the most accessible class of algebraic varieties. They often arise as varieties parameterized by monomials, and their structure may be completely understood through objects from geometric combinatorics. While accessible and understandable, the class of toric varieties is also rich enough to illustrate many properties of algebraic varieties. Toric varieties are also ubiquitous in applications of mathematics, from tensors to statistical models to geometric modeling to solving systems of equations, and they are important to other branches of mathematics such as geometric combinatorics and tropical geometry. These notes are based on, and significantly extend, Frank Sottile's short course of four lectures at the CIMPA school on Combinatorial and Computational Algebraic Geometry in Ibadan, Nigeria 12--23 June 2017.

Abstract:Given a tropical cycle $X$, one can talk about a notion of tropical vector bundles on $X$ having real or tropical fibers. By restricting our attention to bounded rational sections of these bundles, one can develop a good notion of characteristic classes that behave as expected classically. We present further results on these characteristic classes and use it to notably prove the analogue of the splitting principle, which allows us to establish the foundations for Porteous' formula in this setting which provides a determinantal expression for the fundamental class of degeneracy loci in terms of Chern classes.

Abstract:It is often noted that many of the basic concepts of differential geometry, such as the definition of connection, are purely algebraic in nature. Here, we review and extend existing work on fully algebraic formulations of differential geometry which eliminate the need for an underlying manifold. While the literature contains various independent approaches to this, we focus on one particular approach that we argue to be the most natural one based on the definition of \emph{algebraifold}, by which we mean a commutative algebra $\mathcal{A}$ for which the module of derivations of $\mathcal{A}$ is finitely generated projective. Over $\mathbb{R}$ as the base ring, this class of algebras includes the algebra $C^\infty(M)$ of smooth functions on a manifold $M$, and similarly for analytic functions. An importantly different example is the Colombeau algebra of generalized functions on $M$, which makes distributional differential geometry an instance of our formalism. Another instance is a fibred version of smooth differential geometry, since any smooth submersion $M \to N$ makes $C^\infty(M)$ into an algebraifold with $C^\infty(N)$ as the base ring.Over any field $k$ of characteristic zero, examples include the algebra of regular functions on a smooth affine variety as well as any function field.
