Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:We give a survey of the model-theoretic approach to algebraically closed fields, algebraic varieties and algebraic groups. Much of what we say is taken quite directly from other sources, specifically [Po 89], [Po 87, Chapter 4], [Bousl 89], and [Pi 89], as well as from basic textbooks on algebraic geometry and algebraic groups ([Sh], [Bor]). As we tend to be brief with our proofs, the reader is advised to look at these other sources for additional details, where appropriate. Also all relevant attributions of results can be found there. The reader should see [Zie] in this volume for ω-stability, imaginaries, canonical bases etc. The present paper can serve as an introduction to naive algebraic geometry for model-theorists, as all the basic notions will be defined.

Algebraic geometry of discrete interventional models

Abstract:We investigate the algebra and geometry of general interventions in discrete DAG models. To this end, we introduce a theory for modeling soft interventions in the more general family of staged tree models and develop the formalism to study these models as parametrized subvarieties of a product of probability simplices. We then consider the problem of finding their defining equations, and we derive a combinatorial criterion for identifying interventional staged tree models for which the defining ideal is toric. We apply these results to the class of discrete interventional DAG models and establish a criteria to determine when these models are toric varieties.

Abstract:This is a write-up of some lectures I gave in the Fall of 2021 at the Fields Institute in Toronto, as part of the Thematic Programme on Trends in Pure and Applied Model Theory. The goal of the module was to give a quick introduction to the model theory of differential fields that puts differential-algebraic geometry at the center. I focus here on the birational geometry of algebraic vector fields and more generally $D$-varieties in the sense of Buium.

Abstract:We shall describe a simple generalization of commutative rings. The category GR of such "rings", contains the ordinary commutative rings (fully faithfully), but also the "integers" and "residue field" at a real or complex place of a field ; the "field with one element" (the initial object of GR ); the "arithmetical surface" ( the sum in the category GR of the integers with them self: Z(x)Z ) . We shall show that this geometry "see" the real and complex places of a number field (there is an Ostrowski theorem that the valuation sub-GR of a number field correspond to the finite and infinite primes; there is a compactification of the spectrum of the integers ). One can develop algebraic geometry using GR following Grothendieck paradigm . Quillen's homotopical algebra replaces homological algebra . There is an analogue of Quillen's cotangent bundle - in particular there is a theory of non-additive derivations, with modules of Kahler differentials which satisfy all the usual exact sequences - we compute explicitly the differentials of the integers Z over the initial object F1 . Finally we associate with any topological compact valuation GR a meromorphic function - its "zeta" : for the p-adic integers we get the p-local factor of zeta, for the "real integers" we get the gamma factor.

Abstract:In this article we present the basis of Monoid Theory from a categorical point of view, emphasizing the analogies and differences between the theory of modules over commutative rings. We present the generalization of afine schemes and afine monoidal schemes. We study the relationship between the former two with opic varieties and we set up the basis for the study of Fontaine-Kato-Illusie's Logaritmic Geometry, widely used in Arithmetic Geometry. En este artículo presentamos las bases de la teoría de monoides desde el punto de vista categórico, haciendo énfasis en las analogías y diferencias entre la teoría de módulos sobre anillos conmutativos. Se presenta la generalización de esquema afín a esquema afín monoidal; estudiamos la relación que éstos tienen con las variedades tóricas y sentamos las bases para el estudio de la Geometría Logarítmica de Fontaine-Kato-Illusie~\cite{kato1989logarithmic}, ampliamente usada en Geometría Aritmética.

Abstract:Families of objects appear in several contexts, like algebraic topology, theory of deformations, theoretical physics, etc. An unified coordinate-free algebraic framework for families of geometrical quantities is presented here, which allows one to work without introducing ad hoc spaces, by using the language of differential calculus over commutative algebras. An advantage of such an approach, based on the notion of sliceable structures on cylinders, is that the fundamental theorems of standard calculus are straightforwardly generalized to the context of families. As an example of that, we prove the universal homotopy formula.

Abstract:We sketch recent interactions between model theory and a roughly 150-year old study of analytic functions involving complex analysis, algebraic topology, and number theory, centered in canonicity of universal covers. Towards this goal we discuss in a systematic and unified way several examples indicating the main ideas of the proofs and the necessary changes in method for different situations: exponential covers, modular and Shimura curves, Shimura and abelian varieties, and coherent families of smooth covers.

Abstract:These notes were originally developed as lecture notes for a category theory course. They should be well-suited to anyone that wants to learn category theory from scratch and has a scientific mind. There is no need to know advanced mathematics, nor any of the disciplines where category theory is traditionally applied, such as algebraic geometry or theoretical computer science. The only knowledge that is assumed from the reader is linear algebra. All concepts are explained by giving concrete examples from different, non-specialized areas of mathematics (such as basic group theory, graph theory, and probability). Not every example is helpful for every reader, but hopefully every reader can find at least one helpful example per concept. The reader is encouraged to read all the examples, this way they may even learn something new about a different field. Particular emphasis is given to the Yoneda lemma and its significance, with both intuitive explanations, detailed proofs, and specific examples. Another common theme in these notes is the relationship between categories and directed multigraphs, which is treated in detail. From the applied point of view, this shows why categorical thinking can help whenever some process is taking place on a graph. From the pure math point of view, this can be seen as the 1-dimensional first step into the theory of simplicial sets. Finally, monads and comonads are treated on an equal footing, differently to most literature in which comonads are often overlooked as "just the dual to monads". Theorems, interpretations and concrete examples are given for monads as well as for comonads. This work, thoroughly revised and expanded, is now a book, with an extra section on monoidal categories.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an enhancement of derived algebraic geometry to apply to $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory introduced by Morel and Voevodsky. We call the enhancement "motivic derived algebraic geometry". We shall actually formulate "motivic" versions of $\infty$-categories, $\infty$-topoi, spectral schemes and spectral Deligne--Mumford stacks established by Joyal, Lurie, Toën and Vezzosi. By using the language of motivic derived algebraic geometry, we construct the Grassmannian and the algebraic $K$-theory. Furthermore we formulate the Thom spaces for vector bundles on (motivic) stacks, and we obtain the algebraic cobordism for (motivic) stacks. As the main result, we prove that the algebraic cobordism corepresents the motivic $\infty$-category which has the universal property of oriented (motivic) $\infty$-categories.

Abstract:The growing complexity of modern practical problems puts high demand on mathematical modelling. Given that various models can be used for modelling one physical phenomenon, the role of model comparison and model choice is becoming particularly important. Methods for model comparison and model choice typically used in practical applications nowadays are computation-based, and thus time consuming and computationally costly. Therefore, it is necessary to develop other approaches to working abstractly, i.e., without computations, with mathematical models. An abstract description of mathematical models can be achieved by the help of abstract mathematics, implying formalisation of models and relations between them. In this paper, a category theory-based approach to mathematical modelling is proposed. In this way, mathematical models are formalised in the language of categories, relations between the models are formally defined and several practically relevant properties are introduced on the level of categories. Finally, an illustrative example is presented, underlying how the category-theory based approach can be used in practice. Further, all constructions presented in this paper are also discussed from a modelling point of view by making explicit the link to concrete modelling scenarios.

Gluing of infinitesimal models of algebraic theories

Abstract:Categories of models of algebraic theories have good categorical properties except for gluing. Building upon insights and examples from Synthetic Differential Geometry, we introduce a generalisation of models of algebraic theories to infinitesimal models. We demonstrate that the category of infinitesimal models retains most of the good categorical properties, but with a stark improvement in the behaviour of gluing. This makes infinitesimal models an interesting natural construction with the ability to interpolate between algebra and geometry.

Abstract:This is a report on aspects of the theory and use of monoidal categories. The first section introduces the main concepts through the example of the category of vector spaces. String notation is explained and shown to lead naturally to a link between knot theory and monoidal categories. The second section reviews the light thrown on aspects of representation theory by the machinery of monoidal category theory, such as braidings and convolution. The category theory of Mackey functors is reviewed in the third section. Some recent material and a conjecture concerning monoidal centres is included. The fourth and final section looks at ways in which monoidal categories are, and might, be used for new invariants of low-dimensional manifolds and for the field theory of theoretical physics.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to make a connection between tropical geometry, representations of quantum affine algebras, and scattering amplitudes in physics. The connection allows us to study important and difficult questions in these areas: (1) We give a systematic construction of prime modules (including prime non-real modules) of quantum affine algebras using tropical geometry. We also introduce new objects which generalize positive tropical Grassmannians. (2) We propose a generalization of Grassmannian string integrals in physics, in which the integrand is no longer a finite, but rather an infinite product indexed by prime modules of a quantum affine algebra. We give a general formula of $u$-variables using prime tableaux (corresponding to prime modules of quantum affine algebras of type $A$) and Auslander-Reiten quivers of Grassmannian cluster categories. (3) We study limit $g$-vectors of cluster algebras. This is another way to obtain prime non-real modules of quantum affine algebras systematically. Using limit $g$-vectors, we construct new examples of non-real modules of quantum affine algebras.

Abstract:An algebraization of the notion of topology has been proposed more than seventy years ago in a classical paper by McKinsey and Tarski. However, in McKinsey and Tarski's setting the model theoretical notion of homomorphism does not correspond to the notion of continuity. We notice that the two notions correspond if instead we consider a preorder relation $ \sqsubseteq $ defined by $a \sqsubseteq b$ if $a$ is contained in the topological closure of $b$. A specialization poset is a partially ordered set endowed with a further coarser preorder relation $ \sqsubseteq $. We show that every specialization poset can be embedded in the specialization poset naturally associated to some topological space, where the order relation corresponds to set-theoretical inclusion. Specialization semilattices are defined in an analogous way and the corresponding embedding theorem is proved. The interest of these structures arises from the fact that they also occur in many rather disparate settings, even far removed from topology.

Abstract:Yuan and Zhang introduced arithmetic intersection numbers for adelic line bundles on quasi-projective varieties over a number field. Burgos and Kramer generalized this approach allowing more singular metrics at archimedean places. We introduce abstract divisorial spaces as a tool to generalize these arithmetic intersection numbers to the setting of a proper adelic base curve in the sense of Chen and Moriwaki. We also allow more singular metrics at non-archimedean places using relative mixed energy there as well.
