Abstract:The structured argumentation system that represents arguments by premise-conclusion pairs is called premise-conclusion argumentation (PA) and the one that represents arguments by their premises is called base argumentation (BA). To assess whether BA and PA have the same ability in argument evaluation by extensional semantics, this paper defines the notion of extensional equivalence between BA and PA. It also defines the notion of bisimulation between BA and PA and shows that bisimulation implies extensional equivalence. To illustrate how base argumentation, bisimulation and extensional equivalence can contribute to the study of PA, we prove some new results about PA by investigating the extensional properties of a base argumentation framework and exporting them to two premise-conclusion argumentation frameworks via bisimulation and extensional equivalence. We show that there are essentially three kinds of extensions in these frameworks and that the extensions in the two premise-conclusion argumentation frameworks are identical.

Abstract:This paper provides an adaptation of branching bisimilarity to reactive systems with time-outs. Multiple equivalent definitions are procured, along with a modal characterisation and a proof of its congruence property for a standard process algebra with recursion. The last section presents a complete axiomatisation for guarded processes without infinite sequences of unobservable actions.

Abstract:Larsen and Skou initiated the study of probabilistic bisimilarity and its characterisation in terms of tests. Later on, van Breugel et al. showed that, for labelled Markov processes with continuous state spaces, probabilistic bisimilarity nicely coincides with a simple notion of testing equivalence. Their proof employs advanced machinery from topology. In the discrete case of finite-state reactive probabilistic processes, we prove that coincidence result with an elementary and more accessible proof.

Abstract:Place bisimilarity is a behavioral equivalence for finite Petri nets, proposed in \cite{ABS91} and proved decidable in \cite{Gor21}. In this paper we propose an extension to finite Petri nets with silent moves of the place bisimulation idea, yielding {\em branching} place bisimilarity $\approx_p$, following the intuition of branching bisimilarity \cite{vGW96} on labeled transition systems. We also propose a slightly coarser variant, called branching {\em d-place} bisimilarity $\approx_d$, following the intuition of d-place bisimilarity in \cite{Gor21}. We prove that $\approx_p$ and $\approx_d$ are decidable equivalence relations. Moreover, we prove that $\approx_d$ is strictly finer than branching fully-concurrent bisimilarity \cite{Pin93,Gor20c}, essentially because $\approx_d$ does not consider as unobservable those $\tau$-labeled net transitions with pre-set size larger than one, i.e., those resulting from (multi-party) interaction.

Abstract:Recent studies reveal that branching bisimilarity is decidable for both nBPP (normed Basic Parallel Processes) and nBPA (normed Basic Process Algebras). These results lead to the question if there are any other models in the hierarchy of PRS (Process Rewrite Systems) whose branching bisimilarity is decidable. It is shown in this paper that the branching bisimilarity for both nOCN (normed One Counter Nets) and nPA (normed Process Algebras) is undecidable. These results essentially imply that the question has a negative answer.
Place Bisimilarity is Decidable, Indeed!

Abstract:Place bisimilarity $\sim_p$ is a behavioral equivalence for finite Petri nets, originally proposed in \cite{ABS91}, that, differently from all the other behavioral relations proposed so far, is not defined over the markings of a finite net, rather over its places, which are finitely many. Place bisimilarity $\sim_p$ was claimed decidable in \cite{ABS91}, but its decidability was not really proved. We show that it is possible to decide $\sim_p$ with a simple algorithm, which essentially scans all the place relations (which are finitely many) to check whether they are place bisimulations. We also show that $\sim_p$ does respect the intended causal semantics of Petri nets, as it is finer than causal-net bisimilarity \cite{Gor22}. Moreover, we propose a slightly coarser variant, we call d-place bisimilarity $\sim_d$, that we conjecture to be the coarsest equivalence, fully respecting causality and branching time (as it is finer than fully-concurrent bisimilarity \cite{BDKP91}), to be decidable on finite Petri nets. Finally, two even coarser variants are discussed, namely i-place and i-d-place bisimilarities, which are still decidable, do preserve the concurrent behavior of Petri nets, but do not respect causality. These results open the way towards formal verification (by equivalence checking) of distributed systems modeled by finite Petri nets.

Abstract:The decidability of weak bisimilarity on normed BPA is a long standing open problem. It is proved in this paper that branching bisimilarity, a standard refinement of weak bisimilarity, is decidable for normed BPA and that the associated regularity problem is also decidable.

Abstract:We introduce Probabilistic Guarded Kleene Algebra with Tests (ProbGKAT), an extension of GKAT that allows reasoning about uninterpreted imperative programs with probabilistic branching. We give its operational semantics in terms of special class of probabilistic automata. We give a sound and complete Salomaa-style axiomatisation of bisimilarity of ProbGKAT expressions. Finally, we show that bisimilarity of ProbGKAT expressions can be decided in $O(n^3 \log n)$ time via a generic partition refinement algorithm.

Bisimilarity in fresh-register automata

Abstract:Register automata are a basic model of computation over infinite alphabets. Fresh-register automata extend register automata with the capability to generate fresh symbols in order to model computational scenarios involving name creation. This paper investigates the complexity of the bisimilarity problem for classes of register and fresh-register automata. We examine all main disciplines that have appeared in the literature: general register assignments; assignments where duplicate register values are disallowed; and assignments without duplicates in which registers cannot be empty. In the general case, we show that the problem is EXPTIME-complete. However, the absence of duplicate values in registers enables us to identify inherent symmetries inside the associated bisimulation relations, which can be used to establish a polynomial bound on the depth of Attacker-winning strategies. Furthermore, they enable a highly succinct representation of the corresponding bisimulations. By exploiting results from group theory and computational group theory, we can then show solvability in PSPACE and NP respectively for the latter two register disciplines. In each case, we find that freshness does not affect the complexity class of the problem. The results allow us to close a complexity gap for language equivalence of deterministic register automata. We show that deterministic language inequivalence for the no-duplicates fragment is NP-complete, which disproves an old conjecture of Sakamoto. Finally, we discover that, unlike in the finite-alphabet case, the addition of pushdown store makes bisimilarity undecidable, even in the case of visibly pushdown storage.

Weighted basic parallel processes and combinatorial enumeration

Abstract:We study weighted basic parallel processes (WBPP), a nonlinear recursive generalisation of weighted finite automata inspired from process algebra and Petri net theory. Our main result is an algorithm of 2-EXPSPACE complexity for the WBPP equivalence problem. While (unweighted) BPP language equivalence is undecidable, we can use this algorithm to decide multiplicity equivalence of BPP and language equivalence of unambiguous BPP, with the same complexity. These are long-standing open problems for the related model of weighted context-free grammars. Our second contribution is a connection between WBPP, power series solutions of systems of polynomial differential equations, and combinatorial enumeration. To this end we consider constructible differentially finite power series (CDF), a class of multivariate differentially algebraic series introduced by Bergeron and Reutenauer in order to provide a combinatorial interpretation to differential equations. CDF series generalise rational, algebraic, and a large class of D-finite (holonomic) series, for which decidability of equivalence was an open problem. We show that CDF series correspond to commutative WBPP series. As a consequence of our result on WBPP and commutativity, we show that equivalence of CDF power series can be decided with 2-EXPTIME complexity. The complexity analysis is based on effective bounds from algebraic geometry, namely on the length of chains of polynomial ideals constructed by repeated application of finitely many, not necessarily commuting derivations of a multivariate polynomial ring. This is obtained by generalising a result of Novikov and Yakovenko in the case of a single derivation, which is noteworthy since generic bounds on ideal chains are non-primitive recursive in general. On the way, we develop the theory of \WBPP~series and \CDF~power series, exposing several of their appealing properties.

Abstract:Comparison to traditionally accurate computing, approximate computing focuses on the rapidity of the satisfactory solution, but not the unnecessary accuracy of the solution. Approximate bisimularity is the approximate one corresponding to traditionally accurate bisimilarity. Based on the work of distances between basic processes, we propose an algebraic approach for distances between processes to support a whole process calculus CCS, which contains prefix, sum, composition, restriction, relabeling and recursion.

The Image of the Process Interpretation of Regular Expressions is Not Closed under Bisimulation Collapse

Abstract:Axiomatization and expressibility problems for Milner's process semantics (1984) of regular expressions modulo bisimilarity have turned out to be difficult for the full class of expressions with deadlock 0 and empty step~1. We report on a phenomenon that arises from the added presence of 1 when 0 is available, and that brings a crucial reason for this difficulty into focus. To wit, while interpretations of 1-free regular expressions are closed under bisimulation collapse, this is not the case for the interpretations of arbitrary regular expressions. Process graph interpretations of 1-free regular expressions satisfy the loop existence and elimination property LEE, which is preserved under bisimulation collapse. These features of LEE were applied for showing that an equational proof system for 1-free regular expressions modulo bisimilarity is complete, and that it is decidable in polynomial time whether a process graph is bisimilar to the interpretation of a 1-free regular expression. While interpretations of regular expressions do not satisfy the property LEE in general, we show that LEE can be recovered by refined interpretations as graphs with 1-transitions refined interpretations with 1-transitions (which are similar to silent steps for automata). This suggests that LEE can be expedient also for the general axiomatization and expressibility problems. But a new phenomenon emerges that needs to be addressed: the property of a process graph `to can be refined into a process graph with 1-transitions and with LEE' is not preserved under bisimulation collapse. We provide a 10-vertex graph with two 1-transitions that satisfies LEE, and in which a pair of bisimilar vertices cannot be collapsed on to each other while preserving the refinement property. This implies that the image of the process interpretation of regular expressions is not closed under bisimulation collapse.

Quantum Bisimilarity is a Congruence under Physically Admissible Schedulers

Abstract:The development of quantum algorithms and protocols calls for adequate modelling and verification techniques, which requires abstracting and focusing on the basic features of quantum concurrent systems, like CCS and CSP have done for their classical counterparts. So far, an equivalence relation is still missing that is a congruence for parallel composition and adheres to the limited discriminating power implied by quantum theory. In fact, defining an adequate bisimilarity for quantum-capable, concurrent systems proved a difficult task, because unconstrained non-determinism allows to spuriously discriminate indistinguishable quantum systems. We investigate this problem by enriching a linear quantum extension of CCS with simple physically admissible schedulers. We show that our approach suffices for deriving a well-behaved bisimilarity that satisfies the aforementioned desiderata.

Abstract:We introduce three general compositionality criteria over operational semantics and prove that, when all three are satisfied together, they guarantee weak bisimulation being a congruence. Our work is founded upon Turi and Plotkin's mathematical operational semantics and the coalgebraic approach to weak bisimulation by Brengos. We demonstrate each criterion with various examples of success and failure and establish a formal connection with the simply WB cool rule format of Bloom and van Glabbeek. In addition, we show that the three criteria induce lax models in the sense of Bonchi et al.

Abstract:Geuvers and Jacobs (LMCS 2021) formulated the notion of apartness relation on state-based systems modelled as coalgebras. In this context apartness is formally dual to bisimilarity, and gives an explicit proof system for showing that certain states are not bisimilar. In the current paper, we relate apartness to another classical element of the theory of behavioural equivalences: that of turn-based two-player games. Studying both strong and branching bisimilarity, we show that winning configurations for the Spoiler player correspond to apartness proofs, for transition systems that are image-finite (in the case of strong bisimilarity) and finite (in the case of branching bisimilarity).

Abstract:Recently a branching bisimilarity congruence has been established for randomized process models in a model independent approach. In this paper, we propose a new probabilistic weak bisimilarity for randomized CCS and show that it is a congruence. We also provide a complete axiomatization for the finite submodel. Both work respect model independency and thus can be easily generalized to randomized extension of any interactive model.

Bisimulation for Impure Simplicial Complexes

Abstract:As an alternative to Kripke models, simplicial complexes are a versatile semantic primitive on which to interpret epistemic logic. Given a set of vertices, a simplicial complex is a downward closed set of subsets, called simplexes, of the vertex set. A maximal simplex is called a facet. Impure simplicial complexes represent that some agents (processes) are dead. It is known that impure simplicial complexes categorically correspond to so-called partial epistemic (Kripke) models. In this contribution, we define a notion of bisimulation to compare impure simplicial complexes and show that it has the Hennessy-Milner property. These results are for a logical language including atoms that express whether agents are alive or dead. Without these atoms no reasonable standard notion of bisimulation exists, as we amply justify by counterexamples, because such a restricted language is insufficiently expressive.

Abstract:This paper studies the equational theory of bisimulation equivalence over the process algebra BCCSP extended with the priority operator of Baeten, Bergstra and Klop. We prove that, in the presence of an infinite set of actions, bisimulation equivalence has no finite, sound, ground-complete equational axiomatisation over that language. This negative result applies even if the syntax is extended with an arbitrary collection of auxiliary operators, and motivates the study of axiomatisations using equations with action predicates as conditions. In the presence of an infinite set of actions, it is shown that, in general, bisimulation equivalence has no finite, sound, ground-complete axiomatisation consisting of equations with action predicates as conditions over the language studied in this paper. Finally, sufficient conditions on the priority structure over actions are identified that lead to a finite, ground-complete axiomatisation of bisimulation equivalence using equations with action predicates as conditions.
