Abstract:Geuvers and Jacobs (LMCS 2021) formulated the notion of apartness relation on state-based systems modelled as coalgebras. In this context apartness is formally dual to bisimilarity, and gives an explicit proof system for showing that certain states are not bisimilar. In the current paper, we relate apartness to another classical element of the theory of behavioural equivalences: that of turn-based two-player games. Studying both strong and branching bisimilarity, we show that winning configurations for the Spoiler player correspond to apartness proofs, for transition systems that are image-finite (in the case of strong bisimilarity) and finite (in the case of branching bisimilarity).

Relational Connectors and Heterogeneous Bisimulations

Abstract:While behavioural equivalences among systems of the same type, such as Park/Milner bisimilarity of labelled transition systems, are an established notion, a systematic treatment of relationships between systems of different type is currently missing. We provide such a treatment in the framework of universal coalgebra, in which the type of a system (nondeterministic, probabilistic, weighted, game-based etc.) is abstracted as a set functor: We introduce relational connectors among set functors, which induce notions of heterogeneous (bi)simulation among coalgebras of the respective types. We give a number of constructions on relational connectors. In particular, we identify composition and converse operations on relational connectors; we construct corresponding identity relational connectors, showing that the latter generalize the standard Barr extension of weak-pullback-preserving functors; and we introduce a Kantorovich construction in which relational connectors are induced from relations between modalities. For Kantorovich relational connectors, one has a notion of dual-purpose modal logic interpreted over both system types, and we prove a corresponding Hennessy-Milner-type theorem stating that generalized (bi)similarity coincides with theory inclusion on finitely-branching systems. We apply these results to a number of example scenarios involving labelled transition systems with different label alphabets, probabilistic systems, and input/output conformances.

Abstract:One of van Benthem’s seminal results is the Bisimulation Theorem characterizing modal logic as the bisimulation-invariant fragment of first-order logic. Janin and Walukiewicz extended this theorem to include fixpoint operators, showing that the modal μ-calculus μML is the bisimulation-invariant fragment of monadic second-order logic MSO. Their proof uses parity automata that operate on Kripke models, and feature a transition map defined in terms of certain fragments of monadic first-order logic. In this paper we decompose their proof in three parts: (1) two automata-theoretic characterizations, of MSO and μML respectively, (2) a simple model-theoretic characterization of the identity-free fragment of monadic first-order logic, and (3) an automata-theoretic result, stating that (a strong version of) the second result somehow propagates to the level of full fixpoint logics. Our main contribution shows that the third result is an instance of a more general phenomenon that is essentially coalgebraic in nature. We prove that if one set Λ of predicate liftings (or modalities) for a certain set functor T uniformly corresponds to the T -natural fragment of another such set Λ ′, then the fixpoint logic associated with Λ is the bisimulation-invariant logic of the fixpoint logic associated with Λ ′.

Abstract:Proving compositionality of behavioral equivalence on state-based systems with respect to algebraic operations is a classical and widely studied problem. We study a categorical formulation of this problem, where operations on state-based systems modeled as coalgebras can be elegantly captured through distributive laws between functors. To prove compositionality, it then suffices to show that this distributive law lifts from sets to relations, giving an explanation of how behavioral equivalence on smaller systems can be combined to obtain behavioral equivalence on the composed system.

Abstract:Larsen and Skou initiated the study of probabilistic bisimilarity and its characterisation in terms of tests. Later on, van Breugel et al. showed that, for labelled Markov processes with continuous state spaces, probabilistic bisimilarity nicely coincides with a simple notion of testing equivalence. Their proof employs advanced machinery from topology. In the discrete case of finite-state reactive probabilistic processes, we prove that coincidence result with an elementary and more accessible proof.

Abstract:Behavioural equivalences can be characterized via bisimulations, modal logics and spoiler-defender games. In this paper we review these three perspectives in a coalgebraic setting, which allows us to generalize from the particular branching type of a transition system. We are interested in qualitative notions (classical bisimulation) as well as quantitative notions (bisimulation metrics). Our first contribution is to introduce a spoiler-defender bisimulation game for coalgebras in the classical case. Second, we introduce such games for the metric case and furthermore define a real-valued modal coalgebraic logic, from which we can derive the strategy of the spoiler. For this logic we show a quantitative version of the Hennessy-Milner theorem.

Abstract:Our objective is to extend the standard results of preservation and reflection of properties by bisimulations to the coalgebraic setting, as well as to study under what conditions these results hold for simulations. The notion of bisimulation is the classical one, while for simulations we use that proposed by Hughes and Jacobs. As for properties, we start by using a generalization of linear temporal logic to arbitrary coalgebras suggested by Jacobs, and then an extension by Kurtz which includes atomic propositions too.

Abstract:Van Breugel et al. [Theor. Comput. Sci. 333(1-2):171-197, 2005] have given an elegant testing framework that can characterise probabilistic bisimulation, but its completeness proof is highly involved. Deng and Feng [Inf. Comput. 257:58-64, 2017] have simplified that result for finite-state processes. The crucial part in the latter work is an algorithm that can construct enhanced tests. We formalise the algorithm and prove its correctness by maintaining a number of subtle invariants in Coq. To support the formalisation, we develop a reusable library for manipulating finite sets. This sets an early example of formalising probabilistic concurrency theory or quantitative aspects of concurrency theory at large, which is a rich field to be pursued.

Abstract:We introduce three general compositionality criteria over operational semantics and prove that, when all three are satisfied together, they guarantee weak bisimulation being a congruence. Our work is founded upon Turi and Plotkin's mathematical operational semantics and the coalgebraic approach to weak bisimulation by Brengos. We demonstrate each criterion with various examples of success and failure and establish a formal connection with the simply WB cool rule format of Bloom and van Glabbeek. In addition, we show that the three criteria induce lax models in the sense of Bonchi et al.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new set of general principles for probabilistic abstract argumentation. The main principle is a probabilistic analogue of SCC decomposability, which ensures that the probabilistic evaluation of an argumentation framework complies with the probabilistic (in)dependencies implied by the graph topology. We introduce various examples of probabilistic semantics and determine which principles they satisfy. Our work also provides new insights into the relationship between abstract argumentation and the theory of Bayesian networks.
Probabilistic Guarded KAT Modulo Bisimilarity: Completeness and Complexity

Abstract:We introduce Probabilistic Guarded Kleene Algebra with Tests (ProbGKAT), an extension of GKAT that allows reasoning about uninterpreted imperative programs with probabilistic branching. We give its operational semantics in terms of special class of probabilistic automata. We give a sound and complete Salomaa-style axiomatisation of bisimilarity of ProbGKAT expressions. Finally, we show that bisimilarity of ProbGKAT expressions can be decided in $O(n^3 \log n)$ time via a generic partition refinement algorithm.

Abstract:The topological interpretation of modal logics provides descriptive languages and proof systems for reasoning about points of topological spaces. Recent work has been devoted to model checking of spatial logics on discrete spatial structures, such as finite graphs and digital images, with applications in various case studies including medical image analysis. These recent developments required a generalisation step, from topological spaces to closure spaces. In this work we initiate the study of bisimilarity and minimisation algorithms that are consistent with the closure spaces semantics. For this purpose we employ coalgebraic models. We present a coalgebraic definition of bisimilarity for quasi-discrete models, which is adequate with respect to a spatial logic with reachability operators, complemented by a free and open-source minimisation tool for finite models. We also discuss the non-quasi-discrete case, by providing a generalisation of the well-known set-theoretical notion of topo-bisimilarity, and a categorical definition, in the same spirit as the coalgebraic rendition of neighbourhood frames, but employing the covariant power set functor, instead of the contravariant one. We prove its adequacy with respect to infinitary modal logic.
Disjunctive Probabilistic Modal Logic is Enough for Bisimilarity on Reactive Probabilistic Systems

Abstract:Larsen and Skou characterized probabilistic bisimilarity over reactive probabilistic systems with a logic including true, negation, conjunction, and a diamond modality decorated with a probabilistic lower bound. Later on, Desharnais, Edalat, and Panangaden showed that negation is not necessary to characterize the same equivalence. In this paper, we prove that the logical characterization holds also when conjunction is replaced by disjunction, with negation still being not necessary. To this end, we introduce reactive probabilistic trees, a fully abstract model for reactive probabilistic systems that allows us to demonstrate expressiveness of the disjunctive probabilistic modal logic, as well as of the previously mentioned logics, by means of a compactness argument.

Logical, Metric, and Algorithmic Characterisations of Probabilistic Bisimulation

Abstract:Many behavioural equivalences or preorders for probabilistic processes involve a lifting operation that turns a relation on states into a relation on distributions of states. We show that several existing proposals for lifting relations can be reconciled to be different presentations of essentially the same lifting operation. More interestingly, this lifting operation nicely corresponds to the Kantorovich metric, a fundamental concept used in mathematics to lift a metric on states to a metric on distributions of states, besides the fact the lifting operation is related to the maximum flow problem in optimisation theory. The lifting operation yields a neat notion of probabilistic bisimulation, for which we provide logical, metric, and algorithmic characterisations. Specifically, we extend the Hennessy-Milner logic and the modal mu-calculus with a new modality, resulting in an adequate and an expressive logic for probabilistic bisimilarity, respectively. The correspondence of the lifting operation and the Kantorovich metric leads to a natural characterisation of bisimulations as pseudometrics which are post-fixed points of a monotone function. We also present an "on the fly" algorithm to check if two states in a finitary system are related by probabilistic bisimilarity, exploiting the close relationship between the lifting operation and the maximum flow problem.

Abstract:We study different behavioral metrics, such as those arising from both branching and linear-time semantics, in a coalgebraic setting. Given a coalgebra $\alpha\colon X \to HX$ for a functor $H \colon \mathrm{Set}\to \mathrm{Set}$, we define a framework for deriving pseudometrics on $X$ which measure the behavioral distance of states. A crucial step is the lifting of the functor $H$ on $\mathrm{Set}$ to a functor $\overline{H}$ on the category $\mathrm{PMet}$ of pseudometric spaces. We present two different approaches which can be viewed as generalizations of the Kantorovich and Wasserstein pseudometrics for probability measures. We show that the pseudometrics provided by the two approaches coincide on several natural examples, but in general they differ. If $H$ has a final coalgebra, every lifting $\overline{H}$ yields in a canonical way a behavioral distance which is usually branching-time, i.e., it generalizes bisimilarity. In order to model linear-time metrics (generalizing trace equivalences), we show sufficient conditions for lifting distributive laws and monads. These results enable us to employ the generalized powerset construction.

Abstract:Recently a branching bisimilarity congruence has been established for randomized process models in a model independent approach. In this paper, we propose a new probabilistic weak bisimilarity for randomized CCS and show that it is a congruence. We also provide a complete axiomatization for the finite submodel. Both work respect model independency and thus can be easily generalized to randomized extension of any interactive model.

Abstract:We investigate a notion of probabilistic program equivalence under linear contexts. We show that both a statebased and a distribution-based bisimilarity are sound coinductive proof techniques for reasoning about higher-order probabilistic programs, but only the distribution-based one is complete for linear contextual equivalence. The completeness proof is novel and directly constructs linear contexts from transitions, rather than the traditional approach of characterizing bisimilarities as testing equivalences.

Abstract:The modelling, specification and study of the semantics of concurrent reactive systems have been interesting research topics for many years now. The aim of this thesis is to exploit the strengths of the (co)algebraic framework in modelling reactive systems and reasoning on several types of associated semantics, in a uniform fashion. In particular, we are interested in handling notions of behavioural equivalence/preorder ranging from bisimilarity for systems that can be represented as non-deterministic coalgebras, to decorated trace semantics for labelled transition systems and probabilistic systems, and testing semantics for labelled transition systems with internal behaviour. Moreover, we aim at deriving a suite of corresponding verification algorithms suitable for implementation in automated tools.

Abstract:This paper provides an adaptation of branching bisimilarity to reactive systems with time-outs. Multiple equivalent definitions are procured, along with a modal characterisation and a proof of its congruence property for a standard process algebra with recursion. The last section presents a complete axiomatisation for guarded processes without infinite sequences of unobservable actions.

Abstract:Our concrete objective is to present both ordinary bisimulations and probabilistic bisimulations in a common coalgebraic framework based on multiset bisimulations. For that we show how to relate the underlying powerset and probabilistic distributions functors with the multiset functor by means of adequate natural transformations. This leads us to the general topic that we investigate in the paper: a natural transformation from a functor F to another G transforms F-bisimulations into G-bisimulations but, in general, it is not possible to express G-bisimulations in terms of F-bisimulations. However, they can be characterized by considering Hughes and Jacobs' notion of simulation, taking as the order on the functor F the equivalence induced by the epi-mono decomposition of the natural transformation relating F and G. We also consider the case of alternating probabilistic systems where non-deterministic and probabilistic choices are mixed, although only in a partial way, and extend all these results to categorical simulations.
