Abstract:In this overview article we present several methods for multiplying matrices and the implementation of these methods in C. Also a little test program is given to compare their running time and the numerical stability. The methods are: naive method, naive method working on arrays, naive method with the \textsc{Kahan} trick, three methods with loop unrolling, winograd method and the scaled variant, original \textsc{Strassen} method and the \textsc{Strassen}-\textsc{Winograd} variant. Please note, that this is the FIRST version. The algorithms are not well tested and the implementation is not optimized. If you like to join the project, please contact me.

Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing

Abstract:We present a C++ header-only parallel sparse matrix library, based on sparse quadtree representation of matrices using the Chunks and Tasks programming model. The library implements a number of sparse matrix algorithms for distributed memory parallelization that are able to dynamically exploit data locality to avoid movement of data. This is demonstrated for the example of block-sparse matrix-matrix multiplication applied to three sequences of matrices with different nonzero structure, using the CHT-MPI 2.0 runtime library implementation of the Chunks and Tasks model. The runtime library succeeds to dynamically load balance the calculation regardless of the sparsity structure.

Abstract:In this work, we study some algebraic aspects of combined matrices $\mathcal{C}(A)$, where the entries of $A$ belongs to a number field $K$ and $A$ is a non singular matrix. In other words, $A$ is a $n\times n$ belonging to the General Linear Group over $K$ denoted by $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$. Also we analyze the case in which the matrix $A$ belongs to algebraic subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$ such as unimodular group, that is $A^2$ is a $n\times n$ belonging to the Special Linear Group denoted by $\mathrm{SL}_n(K)$, Triangular groups, Diagonal groups among others. In particular, we analyze entirely the case $n=2$ giving explicitely the diagonalization of $\mathcal{C}(A)$, that includes characteristic polynomials, eigenvalues and eigenfactors.

Abstract:An original approach to solving difficult time-consuming problems of registration and analysis of random point images is described. The approach is based on the development and application of high-performance specialized computer algebra systems. Three software packages have been created specifically for carrying out equivalent analytical transformations on a computer. The first software system is designed to calculate formulas describing the volumes of convex polyhedra with parametrically specified boundaries in n-dimensional space. The second system is based on the calculation of multidimensional integral expressions by the method of cyclic differentiation of the integral with respect to the parameter. The third system is based on the accelerated implementation of complex combinatorial-recursive transformations on a computer. Another distinctive feature of the work is the extension of the classical Catalan numbers to the multidimensional case (they were required to solve a number of intermediate probabilistic-combinatorial problems). The implementation of the above computer algebra software systems on a multi-core cluster of Novosibirsk State University, together with the direct use of the explicit form of generalized Catalan numbers, allowed the authors to obtain several new previously unknown probabilistic formulas and dependencies required for solving problems in the field of analysis of random point images.

Abstract:It is important to establish solid mathematical knowledge throughout the education period. Matrices are important mathematical objects commonly used in many diverse disciplines, including mathematics, engineering, and science. Most problems encountered in such disciplines are represented by mathematical models with various types of matrices, and solved through some applications of matrix algebra. Although simple or advanced operations of matrices can be performed by using modern programming languages, it usually results in a large fragment of code with a low level of readability due to a complicated sequence of control statements. On the other hand, special-purpose languages handle these operations via library functions, presenting poor integration with other programming environments, and less programming flexibility and practice. This paper addresses the design and development of a programming language, called MxPL, which supports matrix-related mathematics with the provision of some basic structures and functions. Firstly, a grammar that is compatible with the usual notations of matrices is constructed and the parser is produced. Then, the code verifier and interpreter for MxPL programs are implemented. Some code examples are presented to illustrate the performance of several sophisticated matrix operations. The comparative analysis of MxPL is conducted with modern programming languages based on language features.

Abstract:We observe a disconnect between the developers and the end users of linear algebra libraries. On the one hand, the numerical linear algebra and the high-performance communities invest significant effort in the development and optimization of highly sophisticated numerical kernels and libraries, aiming at the maximum exploitation of both the properties of the input matrices, and the architectural features of the target computing platform. On the other hand, end users are progressively less likely to go through the error-prone and time consuming process of directly using said libraries by writing their code in C or Fortran; instead, languages and libraries such as Matlab, Julia, Eigen and Armadillo, which offer a higher level of abstraction, are becoming more and more popular. Users are given the opportunity to code matrix computations with a syntax that closely resembles the mathematical description; it is then a compiler or an interpreter that internally maps the input program to lower level kernels, as provided by libraries such as BLAS and LAPACK. Unfortunately, our experience suggests that in terms of performance, this translation is typically vastly suboptimal. In this paper, we first introduce the Linear Algebra Mapping Problem, and then investigate how effectively a benchmark of test problems is solved by popular high-level programming languages. Specifically, we consider Matlab, Octave, Julia, R, Armadillo (C++), Eigen (C++), and NumPy (Python); the benchmark is meant to test both standard compiler optimizations such as common subexpression elimination and loop-invariant code motion, as well as linear algebra specific optimizations such as optimal parenthesization of a matrix product and kernel selection for matrices with properties. The aim of this study is to give concrete guidelines for the development of languages and libraries that support linear algebra computations.

AMGCL: an Efficient, Flexible, and Extensible Algebraic Multigrid Implementation

Abstract:The paper presents AMGCL -- an opensource C++ library implementing the algebraic multigrid method (AMG) for solution of large sparse linear systems of equations, usually arising from discretization of partial differential equations on an unstructured grid. The library supports both shared and distributed memory computation, allows to utilize modern massively parallel processors via OpenMP, OpenCL, or CUDA technologies, has minimal dependencies, and is easily extensible. The design principles behind AMGCL are discussed and it is shown that the code performance is on par with alternative implementations.

Abstract:In this paper, we generalize Spencer's hyperbolic cosine algorithm to the matrix-valued setting. We apply the proposed algorithm to several problems by analyzing its computational efficiency under two special cases of matrices; one in which the matrices have a group structure and an other in which they have rank-one. As an application of the former case, we present a deterministic algorithm that, given the multiplication table of a finite group of size $n$, it constructs an expanding Cayley graph of logarithmic degree in near-optimal O(n^2 log^3 n) time. For the latter case, we present a fast deterministic algorithm for spectral sparsification of positive semi-definite matrices, which implies an improved deterministic algorithm for spectral graph sparsification of dense graphs. In addition, we give an elementary connection between spectral sparsification of positive semi-definite matrices and element-wise matrix sparsification. As a consequence, we obtain improved element-wise sparsification algorithms for diagonally dominant-like matrices.

Abstract:In this article we discuss the presentation of a random binary matrix using sequence of whole nonnegative numbers. We examine some advantages and disadvantages of this presentation as an alternative of the standard presentation using two-dimensional array. It is shown that the presentation of binary matrices using ordered n-tuples of natural numbers makes the algorithms faster and saves a lot of memory. In this work we use object-oriented programming using the syntax and the semantic of C++ programming language.

Abstract:The main purpose of this book is to propose an introduction to the modern tools of algebraic complexity. To remain as simple as possible while providing meaningful examples, we chose to focus on effective linear algebra; this is certainly one of the best possible choices to give an idea of the main problems in algebraic complexity. The contents of the book are the following: classical results of linear algebra and basic algorithms in linear algebra, straight-line programs as a model of computation, with an emphasis on Strassen's method known as "elimination of divisions", a discussion on various notions of complexity, a presentation of the general algorithmic strategy "divide and conquer", a first important example: the fast multiplication of polynomials, the very heart of the book: the fast multiplication of matrices, with a discussion of derived fast algorithms for various problems of linear algebra. The particular case of the computation of the determinant is then discussed, and the last chapter deals with the difficult computation of the permanent (Valiant's conjecture). This book gives an introduction to a fascinating subject at a reasonable level. . . for French-speaking people.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for the computation of the common solution to the complex conjugate matrix equation system AiXBi+CiX¯Di=Ei,i=1,2,…,N. The algorithms only need finite iteration steps, requiring only real computation. Furthermore, the algorithm can be extended to solve a more general complex matrix equation system. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

History and Overview

Abstract:This material is a rewriting and expansion of notes for beginning graduate students in seminars in combinatorics (Department of Mathematics, University of California San Diego). Solid skills in linear and multilinear algebra were required for these seminars. We focused on a review of linear algebra and a careful development of the general matrix canonical forms as a training ground for the necessary proof and notational skills.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with numerical solutions to general linear matrix equations including the well-known Lyapunov matrix equation and Sylvester matrix equation as special cases. Gradient based iterative algorithm is proposed to approximate the exact solution. A necessary and sufficient condition guaranteeing the convergence of the algorithm is presented. A sufficient condition that is easy to compute is also given. The optimal convergence factor such that the convergence rate of the algorithm is maximized is established. The proposed approach not only gives a complete understanding on gradient based iterative algorithm for solving linear matrix equations, but can also be served as a bridge between linear system theory and numerical computing. Numerical example shows the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the iterative methods for the solution of different types of nonlinear matrix equations. More specifically, we consider iterative methods for the minimal nonnegative solution of a set of Riccati equations, a nonnegative solution of a quadratic matrix equation, and the maximal positive definite solution of the equation X+A∗X−1A=Q. We study the recent iterative methods for computing the solution to the above specific type of equations and propose more effective modifications of these iterative methods. In addition, we make comments and comparisons of the existing methods and show the effectiveness of our methods by illustration examples.

Abstract:In this paper, based on an optimization problem, a sketch-and-project method for solving the linear matrix equation AXB = C is proposed. We provide a thorough convergence analysis for the new method and derive a lower bound on the convergence rate and some convergence conditions including the case that the coefficient matrix is rank deficient. By varying three parameters in the new method and convergence theorems, the new method recovers an array of well-known algorithms and their convergence results. Meanwhile, with the use of Gaussian sampling, we can obtain the Gaussian global randomized Kaczmarz (GaussGRK) method which shows some advantages in solving the matrix equation AXB = C. Finally, numerical experiments are given to illustrate the effectiveness of recovered methods.
