Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the iterative methods for the solution of different types of nonlinear matrix equations. More specifically, we consider iterative methods for the minimal nonnegative solution of a set of Riccati equations, a nonnegative solution of a quadratic matrix equation, and the maximal positive definite solution of the equation X+A∗X−1A=Q. We study the recent iterative methods for computing the solution to the above specific type of equations and propose more effective modifications of these iterative methods. In addition, we make comments and comparisons of the existing methods and show the effectiveness of our methods by illustration examples.

Abstract:In this overview article we present several methods for multiplying matrices and the implementation of these methods in C. Also a little test program is given to compare their running time and the numerical stability. The methods are: naive method, naive method working on arrays, naive method with the \textsc{Kahan} trick, three methods with loop unrolling, winograd method and the scaled variant, original \textsc{Strassen} method and the \textsc{Strassen}-\textsc{Winograd} variant. Please note, that this is the FIRST version. The algorithms are not well tested and the implementation is not optimized. If you like to join the project, please contact me.

By these new iterative methods, we can get the minimum Frobenius norm constrained solutions, such as symmetric, generalized bisymmetric and (R, S)-symmetric solutions.

Abstract:In this work, we study some algebraic aspects of combined matrices $\mathcal{C}(A)$, where the entries of $A$ belongs to a number field $K$ and $A$ is a non singular matrix. In other words, $A$ is a $n\times n$ belonging to the General Linear Group over $K$ denoted by $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$. Also we analyze the case in which the matrix $A$ belongs to algebraic subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$ such as unimodular group, that is $A^2$ is a $n\times n$ belonging to the Special Linear Group denoted by $\mathrm{SL}_n(K)$, Triangular groups, Diagonal groups among others. In particular, we analyze entirely the case $n=2$ giving explicitely the diagonalization of $\mathcal{C}(A)$, that includes characteristic polynomials, eigenvalues and eigenfactors.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with iterative methods for solving a class of coupled matrix equations including the well-known coupled Markovian jump Lyapunov matrix equations as special cases. The proposed method is developed from an optimization point of view and contains the well-known Jacobi iteration, Gauss–Seidel iteration and some recently reported iterative algorithms by using the hierarchical identification principle, as special cases. We have provided analytically the necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence of the proposed iterative algorithm. Simultaneously, the optimal step size such that the convergence rate of the algorithm is maximized is also established in explicit form. The proposed approach requires less computation and is numerically reliable as only matrix manipulation is required. Some other existing results require either matrix inversion or special matrix products. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This paper develops a novel linear system based approach for computing ‖A-1‖∞, the Skeel condition number of an M-matrix A, and the positive diagonal matrices D guaranteeing that AD be a strictly diagonally dominant matrix. Theoretic analysis and simulation results justify the validity of the proposed approach. Moreover, the proposed linear system model can be implemented by application-specific integrated circuits, and then it has asynchronous parallel processing ability and can achieve high computing performance.

Abstract:An original approach to solving difficult time-consuming problems of registration and analysis of random point images is described. The approach is based on the development and application of high-performance specialized computer algebra systems. Three software packages have been created specifically for carrying out equivalent analytical transformations on a computer. The first software system is designed to calculate formulas describing the volumes of convex polyhedra with parametrically specified boundaries in n-dimensional space. The second system is based on the calculation of multidimensional integral expressions by the method of cyclic differentiation of the integral with respect to the parameter. The third system is based on the accelerated implementation of complex combinatorial-recursive transformations on a computer. Another distinctive feature of the work is the extension of the classical Catalan numbers to the multidimensional case (they were required to solve a number of intermediate probabilistic-combinatorial problems). The implementation of the above computer algebra software systems on a multi-core cluster of Novosibirsk State University, together with the direct use of the explicit form of generalized Catalan numbers, allowed the authors to obtain several new previously unknown probabilistic formulas and dependencies required for solving problems in the field of analysis of random point images.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for the computation of the common solution to the complex conjugate matrix equation system AiXBi+CiX¯Di=Ei,i=1,2,…,N. The algorithms only need finite iteration steps, requiring only real computation. Furthermore, the algorithm can be extended to solve a more general complex matrix equation system. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:It is important to establish solid mathematical knowledge throughout the education period. Matrices are important mathematical objects commonly used in many diverse disciplines, including mathematics, engineering, and science. Most problems encountered in such disciplines are represented by mathematical models with various types of matrices, and solved through some applications of matrix algebra. Although simple or advanced operations of matrices can be performed by using modern programming languages, it usually results in a large fragment of code with a low level of readability due to a complicated sequence of control statements. On the other hand, special-purpose languages handle these operations via library functions, presenting poor integration with other programming environments, and less programming flexibility and practice. This paper addresses the design and development of a programming language, called MxPL, which supports matrix-related mathematics with the provision of some basic structures and functions. Firstly, a grammar that is compatible with the usual notations of matrices is constructed and the parser is produced. Then, the code verifier and interpreter for MxPL programs are implemented. Some code examples are presented to illustrate the performance of several sophisticated matrix operations. The comparative analysis of MxPL is conducted with modern programming languages based on language features.

Abstract:We observe a disconnect between the developers and the end users of linear algebra libraries. On the one hand, the numerical linear algebra and the high-performance communities invest significant effort in the development and optimization of highly sophisticated numerical kernels and libraries, aiming at the maximum exploitation of both the properties of the input matrices, and the architectural features of the target computing platform. On the other hand, end users are progressively less likely to go through the error-prone and time consuming process of directly using said libraries by writing their code in C or Fortran; instead, languages and libraries such as Matlab, Julia, Eigen and Armadillo, which offer a higher level of abstraction, are becoming more and more popular. Users are given the opportunity to code matrix computations with a syntax that closely resembles the mathematical description; it is then a compiler or an interpreter that internally maps the input program to lower level kernels, as provided by libraries such as BLAS and LAPACK. Unfortunately, our experience suggests that in terms of performance, this translation is typically vastly suboptimal. In this paper, we first introduce the Linear Algebra Mapping Problem, and then investigate how effectively a benchmark of test problems is solved by popular high-level programming languages. Specifically, we consider Matlab, Octave, Julia, R, Armadillo (C++), Eigen (C++), and NumPy (Python); the benchmark is meant to test both standard compiler optimizations such as common subexpression elimination and loop-invariant code motion, as well as linear algebra specific optimizations such as optimal parenthesization of a matrix product and kernel selection for matrices with properties. The aim of this study is to give concrete guidelines for the development of languages and libraries that support linear algebra computations.

Abstract:In this paper, we give an algorithm for solving linear systems of the Pascal matrices. The method is based on the explicit factorization of the Pascal matrices. Abstract:Nonlinear matrix equations arise in many practical contexts related to control theory, dynamical programming and finite element methods for solving some partial differential equations. In most of these applications, it is needed to compute a symmetric and positive definite solution. Here, we propose new iterative algorithms for solving three different types of nonlinear matrix equations. We have recently proposed a new algorithm for solving positive definite total least squares problems. Making use of an iterative process for inverse of a matrix, we convert the nonlinear matrix equation to an iterative linear one, and, in every iteration, we apply our algorithm for solving a positive definite total least squares problem to solve the linear subproblem and update the newly defined variables and the matrix inverse terms using appropriate formulas. Our proposed algorithms have a number of useful features. One is that the computed unknown matrix remains symmetric and positive definite in all iterations. As the second useful feature, numerical test results show that in most cases our proposed approach turns to compute solutions with smaller errors within lower computing times. Finally, we provide some test results showing that our proposed algorithm converges to a symmetric and positive definite solution in Matlab software environment on a PC, while other methods fail to do so.

Abstract:The translation of linear algebra computations into efficient sequences of library calls is a non-trivial task that requires expertise in both linear algebra and high-performance computing. Almost all high-level languages and libraries for matrix computations (e.g., Matlab, Eigen) internally use optimized kernels such as those provided by BLAS and LAPACK; however, their translation algorithms are often too simplistic and thus lead to a suboptimal use of said kernels, resulting in significant performance losses. In order to combine the productivity offered by high-level languages, and the performance of low-level kernels, we are developing Linnea, a code generator for linear algebra problems. As input, Linnea takes a high-level description of a linear algebra problem; as output, it returns an efficient sequence of calls to high-performance kernels. Linnea uses a custom best-first search algorithm to find a first solution in less than a second, and increasingly better solutions when given more time. In 125 test problems, the code generated by Linnea almost always outperforms Matlab, Julia, Eigen and Armadillo, with speedups up to and exceeding 10x.
