Abstract:In this paper, we explicitly show the various isometries of the plane under the taxicab metric. We then use these isometries to prove that Euclid's proposition I.5 for isoscelese triangles is true under certain circumstances in taxicab geometry.

Abstract:Fix two points $p$ and $q$ in the plane and a positive number $k \neq 1$. A result credited to Apollonius of Perga states that the set of points $x$ that satisfy $d(x, p)/d(x, q) = k$ forms a circle. In this paper we study the analogous set in taxicab geometry. We find that while Apollonian sets are not taxicab circles, more complicated Apollonian sets can be characterized in terms of simpler ones.

Abstract:A distance mean function measures the average distance of points from the elements of a given set of points (focal set) in the space. The level sets of a distance mean function are called generalized conics. In case of infinite focal points the average distance is typically given by integration over the focal set. The paper contains a survey on the applications of taxicab distance mean functions and generalized conics' theory in geometric tomography: bisection of the focal set and reconstruction problems by coordinate X-rays. The theoretical results are illustrated by implementations in Maple, methods and examples as well.

A Poincaré disk model for taxicab hyperbolic geometry

Abstract:The taxicab plane is a modification of the Euclidean plane that uses an alternative notion of distance. Similarly, the Poincaré disk is a model of hyperbolic geometry that consists of a subset of the Euclidean plane with an alternative notion of distance. In this paper, we merge these two variations to create a taxicab version of the Poincaré disk in an attempt to create a type of taxicab hyperbolic space.

Abstract:Given two points $p$ and $q$ in the plane and a nonnegative number $r$, the Cassini oval is the set of points $x$ that satisfy $d(x, p) d(x, q) = r^2$. In this paper, we study this set using the taxicab metric. We find that these sets have characteristics that are qualitatively similar to their Euclidean counterparts while also reflecting the underlying taxicab structure. We provide a geometric description of these sets and provide a characterization in terms of intersections and unions of a restricted family of such sets analogous to that found recently for taxicab Apollonian sets.

Abstract:This is an introduction to calculus, and its applications to basic questions from physics. We first discuss the theory of functions $f:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R$, with the notion of continuity, and the construction of the derivative $f'(x)$ and of the integral $\int_a^bf(x)dx$. Then we investigate the case of the complex functions $f:\mathbb C\to\mathbb C$, and notably the holomorphic functions, and harmonic functions. Then, we discuss the multivariable functions, $f:\mathbb R^N\to\mathbb R^M$ or $f:\mathbb R^N\to\mathbb C^M$ or $f:\mathbb C^N\to\mathbb C^M$, with general theory, integration results, maximization questions, and basic applications to physics.

Abstract:Calculating the directional derivative of a class of the set-valued mappings G(x) = fz jAz · h(x)g, in the sense of Tyurin (1965) and Banks & Jacobs (1970) is presented that can be viewed as an extension to the one given by Pecherskaya. Results obtained in this paper are used to get a bound of the Lipschitz constant for the solution sets of the perturbed Linear Programming. This new bound is smaller than the one, due to Li (1994).
Examining Sensitivity of Impact of Taxi Traffic on Capacity and Delays at Urban Road Sections

Abstract:This paper examines the influence of taxi behavior on urban traffic conditions. Using computer simulation and the Taxi Equivalence Factor (TEF), a concept similar to the passenger car equivalents for heavy vehicles, the impacts of taxi traffic on the capacity, and delays at urban road sections is quantified. The taxi equivalence factor is based either on capacity or on delay. Through extensive simulation analysis, the effects of various traffic parameters on the magnitude of the TEF were examined. The results suggest that the TEF is significantly higher for one-lane roads than it is for two-lane roads. Further, the capacity based TEF takes on very low values, while the delay based TEF takes on values that under specific traffic conditions may approach 2. This indicates that the presence of taxis does not seem to affect road capacity, but it significantly affects traffic delay. In any case, the maximum TEF values are found, as expected, when flow approaches capacity.

Abstract:In this paper, we expand on previous work describing partial derivatives and metric component estimators to define tangent spaces on causal sets. Partial derivative operators are the basis vectors of the tangent space, and the metric defines the inner product. First, we use partial derivatives of the metric components to define the connection and partial derivatives of the connection to define the curvature. Numerical results show that both of these approach the expected values for a flat spacetime as density increases. Then we used the connection to define parallel transport and geodesics.

Abstract:The potential for widespread applications of the geometric and mapping properties of functions of a complex variable has motivated this article. On the other hand, the basic or quantum (or q-) derivatives and the basic or quantum (or q-) integrals are extensively applied in many different areas of the mathematical, physical and engineering sciences. Here, in this article, we first apply the q-calculus in order to introduce the q-derivative operator Sη,p,qn,m. Secondly, by means of this q-derivative operator, we define an interesting subclass Tℵλ,pn,m(η,α,κ) of the class of normalized analytic and multivalent (or p-valent) functions in the open unit disk U. This p-valent analytic function class is associated with the class κ-UCV of κ-uniformly convex functions and the class κ-UST of κ-uniformly starlike functions in U. For functions belonging to the normalized analytic and multivalent (or p-valent) function class Tℵλ,pn,m(η,α,κ), we then investigate such properties as those involving (for example) the coefficient bounds, distortion results, convex linear combinations, and the radii of starlikeness, convexity and close-to-convexity. We also consider a number of corollaries and consequences of the main findings, which we derived herein.

Abstract:We generalise the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus to higher dimensions. Our generalisation is based on the observation that the antiderivative of a function of $n$-variables is a solution of a partial differential equation of order $n$ generalising the classical case. The generalised Fundamental Theorem of Calculus then states that the $n$-dimensional integrals over $n$-dimensional axis-parallel rectangular hypercuboids is given by a combinatorial formula evaluating the antiderivative on the vertices of the hypercuboid.

Abstract:This paper establishes calculus upon two physical facts: (1) any average velocity is always between two instantaneous velocities, and (2) the motion of an object is determined once its velocity has been determined. It directly defines derivative and definite integral on an ordered field, proves the fundamental theorem of calculus with no auxiliary conditions, easily reveals the common properties of derivatives, and obtains differentiation formulas for elementary functions. Further discussion shows that the new definitions are in accord with the traditional concepts for continuously differentiable functions. This is a result of the authors' research in the field of educational mathematics, which hopes to provide a more elementary and effective way to teach calculus.

Understanding Urban Dynamics from Taxi GPS Traces

Abstract:The GPS traces collected from a large taxi fleet provide researchers novel opportunities to inspect the urban dynamics in a city and lead to applications that can bring great benefits to the public. In this chapter, based on a real life large-scale taxi GPS dataset, the authors reveal the unique characteristics in the four different trace stages according to the passenger status, study the urban dynamics revealed in each stage, and explain the possible applications. Specifically, from passenger vacant traces, they study the taxi service dynamics, introduce how to use them to help taxis and passengers find each other, and reveal the work shifting dynamics in a city. From passenger occupied traces, they introduce their capabilities in monitoring and predicting urban traffic and estimating travel time. From the pick-up and drop-off events, the authors show the passenger hotspots and human mobility patterns in a city. They also consider taxis as mobile GPS sensors, which probe the urban road infrastructure dynamics.

Abstract:Taxis play important roles in modern urban transportation systems, especially in mega cities. While providing necessary amenities, taxis also significantly contribute to traffic congestion, urban energy consumption, and air pollution. Understanding the travel patterns of taxis is thus important for addressing many urban sustainability challenges. Previous research has primarily focused on examining the statistical properties of passenger trips, which include only taxi trips occupied with passengers. However, unoccupied trips are also important for urban sustainability issues because they represent potential opportunities to improve the efficiency of the transportation system. Therefore, we need to understand the travel patterns of taxis as an integrated system, instead of focusing only on the occupied trips. In this study we examine GPS trajectory data of 11,880 taxis in Beijing, China for a period of three weeks. Our results show that taxi travel patterns share similar traits with travel patterns of individuals but also exhibit differences. Trip displacement distribution of taxi travels is statistically greater than the exponential distribution and smaller than the truncated power-law distribution. The distribution of short trips (less than 30 miles) can be best fitted with power-law while long trips follow exponential decay. We use radius of gyration to characterize individual taxi’s travel distance and find that it does not follow a truncated power-law as observed in previous studies. Spatial and temporal regularities exist in taxi travels. However, with increasing spatial coverage, taxi trips can exhibit dual high probability density centers.

The main object of this paper is to consider some miscellaneous properties and applications which are associated with several fractional differintegral operators. We first investigate, in a systematic and unified manner, various families of series identities which emerged in connection with some of these fractional differintegral formulas. By using such operators of fractional calculus, a number of integral formulas as well as fractional differintegral formulas involving inverse hyperbolic functions are also evaluated.
