Abstract:In this paper, we explicitly show the various isometries of the plane under the taxicab metric. We then use these isometries to prove that Euclid's proposition I.5 for isoscelese triangles is true under certain circumstances in taxicab geometry.

Abstract:Given two points $p$ and $q$ in the plane and a nonnegative number $r$, the Cassini oval is the set of points $x$ that satisfy $d(x, p) d(x, q) = r^2$. In this paper, we study this set using the taxicab metric. We find that these sets have characteristics that are qualitatively similar to their Euclidean counterparts while also reflecting the underlying taxicab structure. We provide a geometric description of these sets and provide a characterization in terms of intersections and unions of a restricted family of such sets analogous to that found recently for taxicab Apollonian sets.

A Poincaré disk model for taxicab hyperbolic geometry

Abstract:The taxicab plane is a modification of the Euclidean plane that uses an alternative notion of distance. Similarly, the Poincaré disk is a model of hyperbolic geometry that consists of a subset of the Euclidean plane with an alternative notion of distance. In this paper, we merge these two variations to create a taxicab version of the Poincaré disk in an attempt to create a type of taxicab hyperbolic space.

Abstract:Fix two points $p$ and $q$ in the plane and a positive number $k \neq 1$. A result credited to Apollonius of Perga states that the set of points $x$ that satisfy $d(x, p)/d(x, q) = k$ forms a circle. In this paper we study the analogous set in taxicab geometry. We find that while Apollonian sets are not taxicab circles, more complicated Apollonian sets can be characterized in terms of simpler ones.

Abstract:In this work we introduce the taxicab and uniform products for Lorentzian pre-length spaces. We further use these concepts to endow the space D(R × T X) of causal diamonds with a Lorentzian length space structure, closely relating its causal properties with its geometry as a metric space furnished with its associated Hausdorff distance. Among the general results, we show that this space is geodesic and globally hyperbolic for a complete length space (X, d).

Abstract:We address an analog of a problem introduced by Erd\H{o}s and Fishburn, itself an inverse formulation of the famous Erd\H{o}s distance problem, in which the usual Euclidean distance is replaced with the metric induced by the $\ell^1$-norm, commonly referred to as the $\textit{taxicab metric}$. Specifically, we investigate the following question: given $d,k\in \mathbb{N}$, what is the maximum size of a subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ that determines at most $k$ distinct taxicab distances, and can all such optimal arrangements be classified? We completely resolve the question in dimension $d=2$, as well as the $k=1$ case in dimension $d=3$, and we also provide a full resolution in the general case under an additional hypothesis.
On taxicab distance mean functions and their geometric applications: methods, implementations and examples

Abstract:A distance mean function measures the average distance of points from the elements of a given set of points (focal set) in the space. The level sets of a distance mean function are called generalized conics. In case of infinite focal points the average distance is typically given by integration over the focal set. The paper contains a survey on the applications of taxicab distance mean functions and generalized conics' theory in geometric tomography: bisection of the focal set and reconstruction problems by coordinate X-rays. The theoretical results are illustrated by implementations in Maple, methods and examples as well.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to develop a new axiomatization of planar geometry by reinterpreting the original axioms of Euclid. The basic concept is still that of a line segment but its equivalent notion of betweenness is viewed as a topological, not a metric concept. That leads quickly to the notion of connectedness without any need to dwell on the definition of topology. In our approach line segments must be connected. Lines and planes are unified via the concept of separation: lines are separated into two components by each point, planes contain lines that separate them into two components as well. We add a subgroup of bijections preserving line segments and establishing unique isomorphism of basic geometrical sets, and the axiomatic structure is complete. Of fundamental importance is the Fixed Point Theorem that allows for creation of the concepts of length and congruency of line segments. The resulting structure is much more in sync with modern science than other axiomatic approaches to planar geometry. For instance, it leads naturally to the Erlangen Program in geometry. Our Conditions of Homogeneity and Rigidity have two interpretations. In physics, they correspond to the basic tenet that independent observers should arrive at the same measurement and are related to boosts in special relativity. In geometry, they mean uniqueness of congruence for certain geometrical figures. Another thread of the paper is the introduction of boundary at infinity, an important concept of modern mathematics, and linking of Pasch Axiom to endowing boundaries at infinity with a natural relation of betweenness. That way spherical geometry can be viewed as geometry of boundaries at infinity.
Complete totally geodesic subsets of the complex hyperbolic plane: an elementary classification

Abstract:The non-trivial complete totally geodesic submanifolds of the complex hyperbolic plane $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes. We present two new proofs for this fact. One is a short proof based on an algebraic formula for the Riemann curvature tensor due to S. Anan'in and C. Grossi and resembles the traditional proof using Lie theory. The other is purely elementary and geometric, relying on the structures in $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ instead of general theories. In this second approach, we prove a slightly stronger result: the only non-trivial complete totally geodesic subsets of $\mathbb H_{\mathbb C}^2$ are the complex geodesics and the real planes without assuming that the subsets are submanifolds a priori. This second proof is also intriguing for only making use of elementary geometric constructions.

Distortion in Correspondence Analysis and in Taxicab Correspondence Analysis: A Comparison

Abstract:Distortion is a fundamental well-studied topic in dimension reduction papers, and intimately related with the underlying intrinsic dimension of a mapping of a high dimensional data set onto a lower dimension. In this paper, we study embedding distortions produced by Correspondence Analysis and its robust l1 variant Taxicab Correspondence analysis, which are visualization methods for contingency tables. For high dimensional data, distortions in Correspondence Analysis are contractions; while distortions in Taxicab Correspondence Analysis could be contractions or stretchings. This shows that Euclidean geometry is quite rigid, because of the orthogonality property; while Taxicab geometry is quite flexible, because the orthogonality property is replaced by the conjugacy property.

Abstract:Given a finite collection $\{X_i\}_{i\in I}$ of metric spaces, each of which has finite Nagata dimension and Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$, we prove that their union has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$. The short proof we provide is based on the Pelczyński decomposition method. A corollary is a solution to a question of Kaufmann about the union of two planar curves with tangential intersection. A second focus of the paper is on a special case of this result that can be studied using geometric methods. That is, we prove that the Lipschitz free space of a union of finitely many quasiconformal trees is isomorphic to $L^1$. These geometric methods also reveal that any metric quotient of a quasiconformal tree has Lipschitz free space isomorphic to $L^1$. Finally, we analyze Lipschitz light maps on unions and metric quotients of quasiconformal trees in order to prove that the Lipschitz dimension of any such union or quotient is equal to 1.

Holonomy of parabolic geometries near isolated higher-order fixed points

Abstract:For Cartan geometries admitting automorphisms with isotropies satisfying a particular, loosely dynamical property on their model geometries, we demonstrate the existence of an open subset of the geometry with trivial holonomy. This property, which generalizes characteristics of isotropies corresponding to isolated higher-order fixed points in parabolic geometries that are known to require a nearby open subset to have vanishing curvature, only relies upon the behavior of the isotropy in the model geometry, and therefore applies regardless of initial curvature assumptions, such as regularity or normality. Along the way to proving our main results, we also derive a couple of results for working with holonomy, relating to limits of sequences of developments and the existence of antidevelopments, that are useful in their own right. To showcase the effectiveness of the techniques developed, we use them to completely characterize all almost c-projective and almost quaternionic structures that admit a nontrivial automorphism with a higher-order fixed point, as well as all nondegenerate partially integrable almost CR structures that admit a higher-order fixed point with non-null isotropy.

Abstract:We describe surjective linear isometries and linear isometry groups of a large class of Lipschitz-free spaces that includes e.g. Lipschitz-free spaces over any graph. We define the notion of a Lipschitz-free rigid metric space whose Lipschitz-free space only admits surjective linear isometries coming from surjective dilations (i.e. rescaled isometries) of the metric space itself. We show this class of metric spaces is surprisingly rich and contains all $3$-connected graphs as well as geometric examples such as non-abelian Carnot groups with horizontally strictly convex norms. We prove that every metric space isometrically embeds into a Lipschitz-free rigid space that has only three more points.

Abstract:We represent and classify pairs of commuting isometries $(V_1, V_2)$ acting on Hilbert spaces that satisfy the condition \[ [V_1^*, V_2] = \text{compact} + \text{normal}, \] where $[V_1^*, V_2] := V_1^* V_2 - V_2 V_1^*$ is the cross-commutator of $(V_1, V_2)$. The precise description of such pairs also gives a complete and concrete set of unitary invariants. The basic building blocks of representations of such pairs consist of four distinguished pairs of commuting isometries. One of them relies on some peculiar examples of invariant subspaces tracing back to Rudin's intricate constructions of analytic functions on the bidisc. Along the way, we present a rank formula for a general pair of commuting isometries that looks to be the first of its kind.

On the central ball in a translation invariant involutive field

Abstract:The iterated composition of two operators, both of which are involutions and translation invariant, partitions the set of lattice points in the plane into an infinite sequence of discrete parabolas. Each such parabola contains an associated stairway-like path connecting certain points on it, induced by the alternating application of the aforementioned operators. Any two lattice points in the plane can be connected by paths along the square grid composed of steps either on these stairways or towards taxicab neighbors. This leads to the notion of the parabolic-taxicab distance between two lattice points, obtained as the minimum number of steps of this kind needed to reach one point from the other. In this paper, we describe patterns generated by points on paths of bounded parabolic-taxicab length and provide a complete description of the balls centered at the origin. In particular, we prove an earlier conjecture on the area of these balls.

Abstract:For a family $\mathcal{C}$ of properly embedded curves in the 2-dimensional disk $\mathbb{D}^{2}$ satisfying certain uniqueness properties, we consider convex polygons $P\subset \mathbb{D}^{2}$ and define a metric $d$ on $P$ such that $(P,d)$ is a geodesically complete metric space whose geodesics are precisely the curves $\left\{ c\cap P\bigm\vert c\in \mathcal{C}\right\}.$ Moreover, in the special case $\mathcal{C}$ consists of all Euclidean lines, it is shown that $P$ with this new metric is not isometric to any convex domain in $\mathbb{R} ^{2}$ equipped with its Hilbert metric. We generalize this construction to certain classes of uniquely geodesic metric spaces homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^{2}.$
