Abstract:In 1907, Henry Ernest Dudeney posed a puzzle: ``cut any equilateral triangle \dots\ into as few pieces as possible that will fit together and form a perfect square'' (without overlap, via translation and rotation). Four weeks later, Dudeney demonstrated a beautiful four-piece solution, which today remains perhaps the most famous example of a dissection. In this paper (over a century later), we finally solve Dudeney's puzzle, by proving that the equilateral triangle and square have no common dissection with three or fewer polygonal pieces. We reduce the problem to the analysis of a discrete graph structure representing the correspondence between the edges and vertices of the pieces forming each polygon, using ideas from common unfolding.

Abstract:The game of Othello is one of the world's most complex and popular games that has yet to be computationally solved. Othello has roughly ten octodecillion (10 to the 58th power) possible game records and ten octillion (10 to the 28th power) possible game positions. The challenge of solving Othello, determining the outcome of a game with no mistake made by either player, has long been a grand challenge in computer science. This paper announces a significant milestone: Othello is now solved. It is computationally proved that perfect play by both players lead to a draw. Strong Othello software has long been built using heuristically designed search techniques. Solving a game provides a solution that enables the software to play the game perfectly.

Abstract:We consider the one-person game of peg solitaire played on a computer. Two popular board shapes are the 33-hole cross-shaped board, and the 15-hole triangle board---we use them as examples throughout. The basic game begins from a full board with one peg missing and the goal is to finish at a board position with one peg. First, we discuss ways to solve the basic game on a computer. Then we consider the problem of quickly distinguishing board positions where the goal can still be reached ("winning" board positions) from those where it cannot. This enables a computer to alert the player if a jump under consideration leads to a dead end. On the 15-hole triangle board, it is possible to identify all winning board positions (from any single vacancy start) by storing a key set of 437 board positions. For the "central game" on the 33-hole cross-shaped board, we can identify all winning board positions by storing 839,536 board positions. By viewing a successful game as a traversal of a directed graph of winning board positions, we apply a simple algorithm to count the number of ways to traverse this graph, and calculate that the total number of solutions to the central game is 40,861,647,040,079,968. Our analysis can also determine how quickly we can reach a "dead board position", where a one peg finish is no longer possible.

Abstract:In 1983 the chess periodical EG published a summary of a letter from Julius Telesin outlining how a king, a bishop and a knight can checkmate a lonely king on an arbitrarily large chessboard. The Telesin checkmating procedure doesn't seem to be widely known, and the published account left out a number of details. We describe the method precisely and show that it works against every defense. We also discuss the open question of the asymptotics of the largest distance to mate on a large square board.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic method to solve difficult 9 x 9 Sudoku puzzles by hand. While computer algorithms exist to solve these puzzles, these algorithms are not good for human's to use because they involve too many steps and require too much memory. For humans, all one can find in the literature are individual tricks, which used together in ad hoc ways can be used to solve some puzzles--but not all. To the author's knowledge, a systematic procedure made up of well-defined steps that can be carried out by hand and solve all puzzles has not been devised. This paper proposes one such technique--the "minuet" method. It is based on a new system of markings and a new way of simplifying the puzzles that can be easily carried out by hand--or by computer. The author has solved hundreds of puzzles of the most difficult kind ("evil" in Sudoku's parlance) and never found one that could not be solved. The average time to solve one of these puzzles is slightly over 1 hour. It is conjectured that this method can solve all well-posed 9 x 9 puzzles. The method's distinguishing feature is a "minuet" strategy that is applied when the puzzle cannot be further simplified with basic tricks. The strategy consists in concurrently developing two potential solutions, sometimes alone and sometimes in concert as if they were dancing a minuet.

Abstract:Hashiwokakero, or simply Hashi, is a Japanese single-player puzzle played on a rectangular grid with no standard size. Some cells of the grid contain a circle, called island, with a number inside it ranging from one to eight. The remaining positions of the grid are empty. The player must connect all of the islands by drawing a series of horizontal or vertical bridges between them, respecting a series of rules: the number of bridges incident to an island equals the number indicated in the circle, at most two bridges are incident to any side of an island, bridges cannot cross each other or pass through islands, and each island must eventually be reachable from any other island. In this paper, we present some complexity results and relationships between Hashi and well-known graph theory problems. We give a formulation of the problem by means of an integer linear mathematical programming model, and apply a branch-and-cut algorithm to solve the model in which connectivity constraints are dynamically generated. We also develop a puzzle generator. Our experiments on 1440 Hashi puzzles show that the algorithm can consistently solve hard puzzles with up to 400 islands.

Misère Connect Four is Solved

Abstract:Connect Four is a two-player game where each player attempts to be the first to create a sequence of four of their pieces, arranged horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, by dropping pieces into the columns of a grid of width seven and height six, in alternating turns. Misère Connect Four is played by the same rules, but with the opposite objective: do not connect four. This paper announces that Misère Connect Four is solved: perfect play by both sides leads to a second-player win. More generally, this paper also announces that Misère Connect $k$ played on a $w \times h$ board is also solved, but the outcome depends on the game's parameters $k$, $w$, and $h$, and may be a first-player win, a second-player win, or a draw. These results are constructive, meaning that we provide explicit strategies, thus enabling readers to impress their friends and foes alike with provably optimal play in the misère form of a table-top game for children.

Abstract:Abstract In 1979, David Fabian found a complete game of two-person Chinese Checkers in 30 moves (15 by each player). This solution requires that the two players cooperate to generate a win as quickly as possible for one of them. We show, using computational search techniques, that no shorter game is possible. We also consider a solitaire version of Chinese Checkers where one player attempts to move her pieces across the board in as few moves as possible. In 1971, Octave Levenspiel found a solution in 27 moves; we demonstrate that no shorter solution exists. To show optimality, we employ a variant of A* search, as well as bidirectional search.

Abstract:We prove a formula which gives the number of occurrences of certain labels and local configurations inside two-step puzzles introduced by Buch, Kresch, Purbhoo and Tamvakis from the work of Knutson. Puzzles are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles and are known to compute the Schubert structure constants of the cohomology of two-step flag varieties. The formula that we obtain depends only on the boundary conditions of the puzzle. The proof is based on the study of color maps which are tilings of the triangular lattice by edge labeled tiles obtained from puzzles.

Abstract:Higher-dimensional sliding puzzles are constructed on the vertices of a $d$-dimensional hypercube, where $2^d-l$ vertices are distinctly coloured. Rings with the same colours are initially set randomly on the vertices of the hypercube. The goal of the puzzle is to move each of the $2^d-l$ rings to pre-defined target vertices on the cube. In this setting, the $k$-rule constraint represents a generalisation of edge collision for the movement of colours between vertices, allowing movement only when a hypercube face of dimension $k$ containing a ring is completely free of other rings. Starting from an initial configuration, what is the minimum number of moves needed to make ring colours match the vertex colours? An algorithm that provides us with such a number is called God's algorithm. When such an algorithm exists, it does not have a polynomial time complexity, at least in the case of the 15-puzzle corresponding to $k=1$ in the cubical puzzle. This paper presents a comprehensive computational study of different scenarios of the higher-dimensional puzzle. A benchmark of three computational techniques, an exact algorithm (the A* search) and two approximately optimal search techniques (an evolutionary algorithm (EA) and reinforcement learning (RL)) is presented in this work. The experiments show that all three methods can successfully solve the puzzle of dimension three for different face dimensions and across various difficulty levels. When the dimension increases, the A* search fails, and RL and EA methods can still provide a generally acceptable solution, i.e. a distribution of a number of moves with a median value of less than $30$. Overall, the EA method consistently requires less computational time, while failing in most cases to minimise the number of moves for the puzzle dimensions $d=4$ and $d=5$.

Solution Numbers for Eight Blocks to Madness Puzzle

Abstract:The 30 MacMahon colored cubes have each face painted with one of six colors and every color appears on at least one face. One puzzle involving these cubes is to create a $2\times2\times2$ model with eight distinct MacMahon cubes to recreate a larger version with the external coloring of a specified target cube, also a MacMahon cube, and touching interior faces are the same color. J.H. Conway is credited with arranging the cubes in a $6\times6$ tableau that gives a solution to this puzzle. In fact, the particular set of eight cubes that solves this puzzle can be arranged in exactly \textit{two} distinct ways to solve the puzzle. We study a less restrictive puzzle without requiring interior face matching. We describe solutions to the $2\times2\times2$ puzzle and the number of distinct solutions attainable for a collection of eight cubes. Additionally, given a collection of eight MacMahon cubes, we study the number of target cubes that can be built in a $2\times2\times2$ model. We calculate the distribution of the number of cubes that can be built over all collections of eight cubes (the maximum number is five) and provide a complete characterization of the collections that can build five distinct cubes. Furthermore, we identify nine new sets of twelve cubes, called Minimum Universal sets, from which all 30 cubes can be built.

Abstract:The Parks Puzzle is a paper-and-pencil puzzle game that is classically played on a square grid with different colored regions (the parks). The player needs to place a certain number of "trees" in each row, column, and park such that none are adjacent, even diagonally. We define a doubly-infinite family of such puzzles, the $(c, r)$-tree Parks puzzles, where there need be $c$ trees per column and $r$ per row. We then prove that for each $c$ and $r$ the set of $(c, r)$-tree puzzles is NP-complete. For each $c$ and $r$, there is a sequence of possible board sizes $m \times n$, and the number of possible puzzle solutions for these board sizes is a doubly-infinite generalization of OEIS sequence A002464, which itself describes the case $c = r = 1$. This connects the Parks puzzle to chess-based puzzle problems, as the sequence describes the number of ways to place non-attacking kings on a chessboard so that there is exactly one in each column and row (i.e. to place non-attacking dragon kings in shogi). These findings add yet another puzzle to the set of chess puzzles and expands the list of known NP-complete problems described.

Abstract:Satisfiability solving has been used to tackle a range of long-standing open math problems in recent years. We add another success by solving a geometry problem that originated a century ago. In the 1930s, Esther Klein's exploration of unavoidable shapes in planar point sets in general position showed that every set of five points includes four points in convex position. For a long time, it was open if an empty hexagon, i.e., six points in convex position without a point inside, can be avoided. In 2006, Gerken and Nicolás independently proved that the answer is no. We establish the exact bound: Every 30-point set in the plane in general position contains an empty hexagon. Our key contributions include an effective, compact encoding and a search-space partitioning strategy enabling linear-time speedups even when using thousands of cores.

Abstract:"Solitaire Chess" is a logic puzzle published by Thinkfun, that can be seen as a single person version of traditional chess. Given a chess board with some chess pieces of the same color placed on it, the task is to capture all pieces but one using only moves that are allowed in chess. Moreover, in each move one piece has to be captured. We prove that deciding if a given instance of Solitaire Chess is solvable is NP-complete.

Abstract:Pure strategy board games such as chess are popular intellectual activities, and solving them is a challenging task in computer science. In addition to traditional games, many new board games have gained popularity in recent years. Ostle is one such unsolved game published in 2017. It is based on simple rules but is highly competitive. It is a two-player zero-sum game with perfect information in which the game-theoretical values of all game states can be obtained. In this study, we strongly solved Ostle by retrograde analysis. Utilizing various known techniques, including bitboards and succinct indexable dictionaries, significantly reduced the memory consumption in the analyses. We confirmed that the initial position is a draw and found some fundamental properties of Ostle. Additionally, we manually composed a tactical Ostle puzzle with the help of extracted outputs of the analyses. The result demonstrates that solving recent games provided helpful information to compose high-quality problems.
