Abstract:We investigate the transfinite game values arising in infinite chess, providing both upper and lower bounds on the supremum of these values---the omega one of chess---with two senses depending on whether one considers only finite positions or also positions with infinitely many pieces. For lower bounds, we present specific infinite positions with transfinite game values of omega, omega^2, omega^2 times k, and omega^3. By embedding trees into chess, we show that there is a computable infinite chess position that is a win for white if the players are required to play according to a deterministic computable strategy, but which is a draw without that restriction. Finally, we prove that every countable ordinal arises as the game value of a position in infinite three-dimensional chess, and consequently the omega one of infinite three-dimensional chess is as large as it can be, namely, true omega one.

Abstract:Infinite draughts, or checkers, is played just like the finite game, but on an infinite checkerboard extending without bound in all four directions. We prove that every countable ordinal arises as the game value of a position in infinite draughts. Thus, there are positions from which Red has a winning strategy enabling her to win always in finitely many moves, but the length of play can be completely controlled by Black in a manner as though counting down from a given countable ordinal.

Abstract:The object of this study are countably infinite games with perfect information that allow players to choose among arbitrarily many moves in a turn; in particular, we focus on the generalisations of the finite board games of Hex and Draughts. In chapter 1 we develop the theory of transfinite ordinal game values for open infinite games following Evans and Hamkins (arXiv:1302.4377), and we focus on the properties of the omega one, that is the supremum of the possible game values, of classes of open games; we moreover design the class of climbing-through-T games as a tool to study the omega one of given game classes. The original contributions of this research are presented in the following two chapters. In chapter 2 we prove classical results about finite Hex and present Infinite Hex, a well-defined infinite generalisation of Hex. We then introduce the class of stone-placing games, which captures the key features of Infinite Hex and further generalises the class of positional games already studied in the literature within the finite setting of Combinatorial Game Theory. The main result of this research is the characterization of open stone-placing games in terms of the property of essential locality, which leads to the conclusion that the omega one of any class of open stone-placing games is at most $\omega$. In particular, we obtain that the class of open games of Infinite Hex has the smallest infinite omega one, that is $\omega_1^{\rm Hex}=\omega$. In chapter 3 we show a dual result; we define the class of games of Infinite Draughts and explicitly construct open games of arbitrarily high game value with the tools of chapter 1, concluding that the omega one of the class of open games of Infinite Draughts is as high as possible, that is $\omega_1^{\rm Draughts}=\omega_1$.

Abstract:Infinite chess is chess played on an infinite edgeless chessboard. The familiar chess pieces move about according to their usual chess rules, and each player strives to place the opposing king into checkmate. The mate-in-n problem of infinite chess is the problem of determining whether a designated player can force a win from a given finite position in at most n moves. A naive formulation of this problem leads to assertions of high arithmetic complexity with 2n alternating quantifiers---there is a move for white, such that for every black reply, there is a counter-move for white, and so on. In such a formulation, the problem does not appear to be decidable; and one cannot expect to search an infinitely branching game tree even to finite depth. Nevertheless, the main theorem of this article, confirming a conjecture of the first author and C. D. A. Evans, establishes that the mate-in-n problem of infinite chess is computably decidable, uniformly in the position and in n. Furthermore, there is a computable strategy for optimal play from such mate-in-n positions. The proof proceeds by showing that the mate-in-n problem is expressible in what we call the first-order structure of chess, which we prove (in the relevant fragment) is an automatic structure, whose theory is therefore decidable. Indeed, it is definable in Presburger arithmetic. Unfortunately, this resolution of the mate-in-n problem does not appear to settle the decidability of the more general winning-position problem, the problem of determining whether a designated player has a winning strategy from a given position, since a position may admit a winning strategy without any bound on the number of moves required. This issue is connected with transfinite game values in infinite chess, and the exact value of the omega one of chess is not known.

Infinite Hex is a draw

Abstract:We introduce the game of infinite Hex, extending the familiar finite game to natural play on the infinite hexagonal lattice. Whereas the finite game is a win for the first player, we prove in contrast that infinite Hex is a draw -- both players have drawing strategies. Meanwhile, the transfinite game-value phenomenon, now abundantly exhibited in infinite chess and infinite draughts, regrettably does not arise in infinite Hex; only finite game values occur. Indeed, every game-valued position in infinite Hex is intrinsically local, meaning that winning play depends only on a fixed finite region of the board. This latter fact is proved under very general hypotheses, establishing the conclusion for all simple stone-placing games.

Positional $ω$-regular languages

Abstract:In the context of two-player games over graphs, a language $L$ is called positional if, in all games using $L$ as winning objective, the protagonist can play optimally using positional strategies, that is, strategies that do not depend on the history of the play. In this work, we describe the class of parity automata recognising positional languages, providing a complete characterisation of positionality for $\omega$-regular languages. As corollaries, we establish decidability of positionality in polynomial time, finite-to-infinite and 1-to-2-players lifts, and show the closure under union of prefix-independent positional objectives, answering a conjecture by Kopczyński in the $\omega$-regular case.

Abstract:We study the existence of positional strategies for the protagonist in infinite duration games over arbitrary game graphs. We prove that prefix-independent objectives in {\Sigma}_0^2 which are positional and admit a (strongly) neutral letter are exactly those that are recognised by history-deterministic monotone co-Büchi automata over countable ordinals. This generalises a criterion proposed by [Kopczyński, ICALP 2006] and gives an alternative proof of closure under union for these objectives, which was known from [Ohlmann, TheoretiCS 2023]. We then give two applications of our result. First, we prove that the mean-payoff objective is positional over arbitrary game graphs. Second, we establish the following completeness result: for any objective W which is prefix-independent, admits a (weakly) neutral letter, and is positional over finite game graphs, there is an objective W' which is equivalent to W over finite game graphs and positional over arbitrary game graphs.

Abstract:<p>We study two-player games of infinite duration that are played on finite orinfinite game graphs. A winning strategy for such a game is positional if itonly depends on the current position, and not on the history of the play. Agame is positionally determined if, from each position, one of the two playershas a positional winning strategy. The theory of such games is well studied for winning conditions that aredefined in terms of a mapping that assigns to each position a priority from afinite set. Specifically, in Muller games the winner of a play is determined bythe set of those priorities that have been seen infinitely often; an importantspecial case are parity games where the least (or greatest) priority occurringinfinitely often determines the winner. It is well-known that parity games arepositionally determined whereas Muller games are determined via finite-memorystrategies. In this paper, we extend this theory to the case of games with infinitelymany priorities. Such games arise in several application areas, for instance inpushdown games with winning conditions depending on stack contents. For parity games there are several generalisations to the case of infinitelymany priorities. While max-parity games over omega or min-parity games overlarger ordinals than omega require strategies with infinite memory, we canprove that min-parity games with priorities in omega are positionallydetermined. Indeed, it turns out that the min-parity condition over omega isthe only infinitary Muller condition that guarantees positional determinacy onall game graphs.</p>

Abstract:I consider the natural infinitary variations of the games Wordle and Mastermind, as well as their game-theoretic variations Absurdle and Madstermind, considering these games with infinitely long words and infinite color sequences and allowing transfinite game play. For each game, a secret codeword is hidden, which the codebreaker attempts to discover by making a series of guesses and receiving feedback as to their accuracy. In Wordle with words of any size from a finite alphabet of $n$ letters, including infinite words or even uncountable words, the codebreaker can nevertheless always win in $n$ steps. Meanwhile, the mastermind number, defined as the smallest winning set of guesses in infinite Mastermind for sequences of length $\omega$ over a countable set of colors without duplication, is uncountable, but the exact value turns out to be independent of ZFC, for it is provably equal to the eventually different number $\frak{d}({\neq^*})$, which is the same as the covering number of the meager ideal $\text{cov}(\mathcal{M})$. I thus place all the various mastermind numbers, defined for the natural variations of the game, into the hierarchy of cardinal characteristics of the continuum.

Uncountable sets and an infinite linear order game

Abstract:An infinite game on the set of real numbers appeared in Matthew Baker's work [Math. Mag. 80 (2007), no. 5, pp. 377--380] in which he asks whether it can help characterize countable subsets of the reals. This question is in a similar spirit to how the Banach-Mazur Game characterizes meager sets in an arbitrary topological space. In a recent paper, Will Brian and Steven Clontz prove that in Baker's game, Player II has a winning strategy if and only if the payoff set is countable. They also asked if it is possible, in general linear orders, for Player II to have a winning strategy on some uncountable set. To this we give a positive answer and moreover construct, for every infinite cardinal $\kappa$, a dense linear order of size $\kappa$ on which Player II has a winning strategy on all payoff sets. We finish with some future research questions, further underlining the difficulty in generalizing the characterization of Brian and Clontz to linear orders.

Positional Games and QBF: A Polished Encoding

Abstract:Positional games are a mathematical class of two-player games comprising Tic-tac-toe and its generalizations. We propose a novel encoding of these games into Quantified Boolean Formulas (QBFs) such that a game instance admits a winning strategy for the first player if and only if the corresponding formula is true. Our approach improves over previous QBF encodings of games in multiple ways. First, it is generic and lets us encode other positional games, such as Hex. Second, the structural properties of positional games, together with careful treatment of illegal moves, let us generate more compact instances that can be solved faster by state-of-the-art QBF solvers. We establish the latter fact through extensive experiments. Finally, the compactness of our new encoding makes it feasible to translate realistic game problems. We identify a few such problems of historical significance and put them forward to the QBF community as milestones of increasing difficulty.

In 2022, Hamkins and Leonessi introduced an infinite version, in which the goal is to construct a certain kind of two-way infinite path of adjacent stones. It was explicitly left open whether the winning condition is Borel. We prove that it is arithmetic, with complexity between $\Sigma^0_4$ and $\Delta^0_5$.

Abstract:We study zero-sum turn-based games on graphs. In this note, we show the existence of a game objective that is $\mathbf{\Pi}^0_3$-complete for the Borel hierarchy and that is positional, i.e., for which positional strategies suffice for the first player to win over arenas of arbitrary cardinality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first known such objective; all previously known positional objectives are in $\mathbf{\Sigma}^0_3$. The objective in question is a qualitative variant of the well-studied total-payoff objective, where the goal is to maximise the sum of weights.

A New Twist on Wythoff's Game

Abstract:Wythoff's Game is a game for two players playing alternately on two stacks of tiles. On her turn, a player can either remove a positive number of tiles from one stack, or remove an equal positive number of tiles from both stacks. The last player to move legally wins the game. We propose and study a new extension of this game to more than two stacks, which we call Twyst-off, inspired by the Reidemeister moves of knot theory. From an ordered sequence of stacks of tiles, a player may either remove a positive number of tiles from one of the two end stacks, or remove the same positive number of tiles from two consecutive stacks. Whenever an interior stack is reduced to 0, the two neighboring stacks are combined. In this paper, we prove several results about those Twyst-off positions that can be won by the second player (these are called P-positions). We prove an existence and uniqueness result that makes the visualization of data on three-stack P-positions possible. This shows that many such positions are symmetric, like the easy general examples (a,a,a) and (a,a+1,a). The main result establishes tight bounds on those three-stack P-positions that are not symmetric. We go on to prove one general structural result for positions with an arbitrary number of stacks. We also prove facts about the game when allowing stacks of infinite size, including classifying all positions with only infinite stacks in sequences of up to six stacks.

Abstract:Number the cells of a (possibly infinite) chessboard in some way with the numbers 0, 1, 2, ... Consider the cells in order, placing a queen in a cell if and only if it would not attack any earlier queen. The problem is to determine the positions of the queens. We study the problem for a doubly-infinite chessboard of size Z x Z numbered along a square spiral, and an infinite single-quadrant chessboard (of size N x N) numbered along antidiagonals. We give a fairly complete solution in the first case, based on the Tribonacci word. There are connections with combinatorial games.

Abstract:Computer-games research has opened a door to a multi-discipline domain across artificial intelligence, computer-aided design and computer graphics. Chinese chess is one of the most popular board games worldwide and many researches on move generation, position evaluation, searching, opening and endgame play, have been developed. However, few work has been done in the basic representation of Chinese chess board. Currently the representation of 10 times 9 integer array is widely used in Chinese chess programming. In this paper, based on concrete theoretical analysis, a new presentation of Chinese chess board with 6 long integers is proposed. Compared to the traditional 10 times 9 int-array representation that is often redundant in endgames, the cost of storage with the new representation is greatly reduced by an order of magnitude.

Abstract:A vexing open problem in information theory is to find the Shannon capacity of odd cyclic graphs larger than the pentagon and especially for the heptagon. Lower bounds for the capacity are obtained by solving King chess puzzles. Upper bounds are obtained by solving entanglement problems, that is to find good Lovasz umbrellas, quantum state realizations of the graph. We observe that optimal states are always pure states. The rest is expository. One general interesting question is whether the Shannon capacity is always some n-th root of the independence number of the n'th power of the graph.

Abstract:Given a well-quasi-order $X$ and an ordinal $\alpha$, the set $s^F_\alpha(X)$ of transfinite strings on $X$ with length less than $\alpha$ and with finite image is also a well-quasi-order, as proven by Nash-Williams. Before Nash-Williams proved it for general $\alpha$, however, it was proven for $\alpha<\omega^\omega$ by Erdős and Rado. In this paper, we revisit Erdős and Rado's proof and improve upon it, using it to obtain upper bounds on the maximum linearization of $s^F_{\omega^k}(X)$ in terms of $k$ and $o(X)$, where $o(X)$ denotes the maximum linearization of $X$. We show that, for fixed $k$, $o(s^F_{\omega^k}(X))$ is bounded above by a function which can roughly be described as $(k+1)$-times exponential in $o(X)$. We also show that, for $k\le 2$, this bound is not far from tight.
