Abstract:We investigate the transfinite game values arising in infinite chess, providing both upper and lower bounds on the supremum of these values---the omega one of chess---with two senses depending on whether one considers only finite positions or also positions with infinitely many pieces. For lower bounds, we present specific infinite positions with transfinite game values of omega, omega^2, omega^2 times k, and omega^3. By embedding trees into chess, we show that there is a computable infinite chess position that is a win for white if the players are required to play according to a deterministic computable strategy, but which is a draw without that restriction. Finally, we prove that every countable ordinal arises as the game value of a position in infinite three-dimensional chess, and consequently the omega one of infinite three-dimensional chess is as large as it can be, namely, true omega one.

Abstract:Chess graphs encode the moves that a particular chess piece can make on an $m\times n$ chessboard. We study through these graphs through the lens of chip-firing games and graph gonality. We provide upper and lower bounds for the gonality of king's, bishop's, and knight's graphs, as well as for the toroidal versions of these graphs. We also prove that among all chess graphs, there exists an upper bound on gonality solely in terms of $\min\{m,n\}$, except for queen's, toroidal queen's, rook's, and toroidal bishop's graphs.

Statistical analysis of chess games: space control and tipping points

Abstract:Moves in chess games are usually analyzed on a case-by-case basis by professional players, but thanks to the availability of large game databases, we can envision another approach of the game. Here, we indeed adopt a very different point of view, and analyze moves in chess games from a statistical point of view. We first focus on spatial properties and the location of pieces and show that the number of possible moves during a game is positively correlated with its outcome. We then study heatmaps of pieces and show that the spatial distribution of pieces varies less between human players than with engines (such as Stockfish): engines seem to use pieces in a very different way as human did for centuries. These heatmaps also allow us to construct a distance between players that characterizes how they use their pieces. In a second part, we focus on the best move and the second best move found by Stockfish and study the difference $\Delta$ of their evaluation. We found different regimes during a chess game. In a `quiet' regime, $\Delta$ is small, indicating that many paths are possible for both players. In contrast, there are also `volatile' regimes characterized by a `tipping point', for which $\Delta$ becomes large. At these tipping points, the outcome could then switch completely depending on the move chosen. We also found that for a large number of games, the distribution of $\Delta$ can be fitted by a power law $P(\Delta)\sim \Delta^{-\beta}$ with an exponent that seems to be universal (for human players and engines) and around $\beta\approx 1.8$. The probability to encounter a tipping point in a game is therefore far from being negligible. Finally, we conclude by mentioning possible directions of research for a quantitative understanding of chess games such as the structure of the pawn chain, the interaction graph between pieces, or a quantitative definition of critical points.

Rook Endgame Problems in $m$ by $n$ Chess

Abstract:We consider Chess played on an $m \times n$ board (with $m$ and $n$ arbitrary positive integers), with only the two kings and the white rook remaining, but placed at arbitrary positions. Using the symbolic finite state method, developed by Thanatipanonda and Zeilberger, we prove that on a $3 \times n$ board, for almost all initial positions, White can checkmate Black in $\leq n+2$ moves, and that this upper bound is sharp. We also conjecture that for an arbitrary $m \times n$ board, with $m,n \geq 4$ (except for $(m,n)=(4,4)$ when it equals $7$), the number of needed moves is $\leq m+n$, and that this bound is also sharp.

Hyper-bishops, Hyper-rooks, and Hyper-queens: Percentage of Safe Squares on Higher Dimensional Chess Boards

Abstract:The $n$ queens problem considers the maximum number of safe squares on an $n \times n$ chess board when placing $n$ queens; the answer is only known for small $n$. Miller, Sheng and Turek considered instead $n$ randomly placed rooks, proving the proportion of safe squares converges to $1/e^2$. We generalize and solve when randomly placing $n$ hyper-rooks and $n^{k-1}$ line-rooks on a $k$-dimensional board, using combinatorial and probabilistic methods, with the proportion of safe squares converging to $1/e^k$. We prove that the proportion of safe squares on an $n \times n$ board with bishops in 2 dimensions converges to $2/e^2$. This problem is significantly more interesting and difficult; while a rook attacks the same number of squares wherever it's placed, this is not so for bishops. We expand to the $k$-dimensional chessboard, defining line-bishops to attack along $2$-dimensional diagonals and hyper-bishops to attack in the $k-1$ dimensional subspace defined by its diagonals in the $k-2$ dimensional subspace. We then combine the movement of rooks and bishops to consider the movement of queens in 2 dimensions, as well as line-queens and hyper-queens in $k$ dimensions.

Abstract:It is odd that chess grandmasters often disagree in their analysis of positions, sometimes even of simple ones, and that a grandmaster can hold his own against an powerful analytic machine such as Deep Blue. The fact that there must exist pure winning strategies for chess is used to construct a control strategy function. It is then shown that chess strategy is equivalent to an autonomous system of differential equations, and conjectured that the system is chaotic. If true the conjecture would explain the forenamed peculiarities and would also imply that there cannot exist a static evaluator for chess.

Abstract:Is there a joint distribution of $n$ random variables over the natural numbers, such that they always form an increasing sequence and whenever you take two subsets of the set of random variables of the same cardinality, their distribution is almost the same? We show that the answer is yes, but that the random variables will have to take values as large as $2^{2^{\dots ^{2^{\Theta\left(\frac{1}{\epsilon}\right)}}}}$, where $\epsilon\leq \epsilon_n$ measures how different the two distributions can be, the tower contains $n-2$ $2$'s and the constants in the $\Theta$ notation are allowed to depend on $n$. This result has an important consequence in game theory: It shows that even though you can define extensive form games that cannot be implemented on players who can tell the time, you can have implementations that approximate the game arbitrarily well.

Abstract:In this paper, we quantify the non-transitivity in chess using human game data. Specifically, we perform non-transitivity quantification in two ways—Nash clustering and counting the number of rock–paper–scissor cycles—on over one billion matches from the Lichess and FICS databases. Our findings indicate that the strategy space of real-world chess strategies has a spinning top geometry and that there exists a strong connection between the degree of non-transitivity and the progression of a chess player’s rating. Particularly, high degrees of non-transitivity tend to prevent human players from making progress in their Elo ratings. We also investigate the implications of non-transitivity for population-based training methods. By considering fixed-memory fictitious play as a proxy, we conclude that maintaining large and diverse populations of strategies is imperative to training effective AI agents for solving chess.

Playing repeated games with sublinear randomness

Abstract:We study the amount of entropy players asymptotically need to play a repeated normal-form game in a Nash equilibrium. Hubáček, Naor, and Ullman (SAGT'15, TCSys'16) gave sufficient conditions on a game for the minimal amount of randomness required to be $O(1)$ or $\Omega(n)$ for all players, where $n$ is the number of repetitions. We provide a complete characterization of games in which there exists Nash equilibria of the repeated game using $O(1)$ randomness, closing an open question posed by Budinich and Fortnow (EC'11) and Hubáček, Naor, and Ullman. Moreover, we show a 0--1 law for randomness in repeated games, showing that any repeated game either has $O(1)$-randomness Nash equilibria, or all of its Nash equilibria require $\Omega(n)$ randomness. Our techniques are general and naturally characterize the payoff space of sublinear-entropy equilibria, and could be of independent interest to the study of players with other bounded capabilities in repeated games.

Abstract:Infinite chess is chess played on an infinite edgeless chessboard. The familiar chess pieces move about according to their usual chess rules, and each player strives to place the opposing king into checkmate. The mate-in-n problem of infinite chess is the problem of determining whether a designated player can force a win from a given finite position in at most n moves. A naive formulation of this problem leads to assertions of high arithmetic complexity with 2n alternating quantifiers---there is a move for white, such that for every black reply, there is a counter-move for white, and so on. In such a formulation, the problem does not appear to be decidable; and one cannot expect to search an infinitely branching game tree even to finite depth. Nevertheless, the main theorem of this article, confirming a conjecture of the first author and C. D. A. Evans, establishes that the mate-in-n problem of infinite chess is computably decidable, uniformly in the position and in n. Furthermore, there is a computable strategy for optimal play from such mate-in-n positions. The proof proceeds by showing that the mate-in-n problem is expressible in what we call the first-order structure of chess, which we prove (in the relevant fragment) is an automatic structure, whose theory is therefore decidable. Indeed, it is definable in Presburger arithmetic. Unfortunately, this resolution of the mate-in-n problem does not appear to settle the decidability of the more general winning-position problem, the problem of determining whether a designated player has a winning strategy from a given position, since a position may admit a winning strategy without any bound on the number of moves required. This issue is connected with transfinite game values in infinite chess, and the exact value of the omega one of chess is not known.

Abstract:In an investigation of the applications of Combinatorial Game Theory to chess, we construct novel mutual Zugzwang positions, explain an otherwise mysterious pawn endgame from "A Guide to Chess Endings" (Euwe and Hooper), show positions containing non-integer values (fractions, switches, tinies, and loopy games), and pose open problems concerning the values that may be realized by positions on either standard or nonstandard chessboards.

Exponential Erdős-Szekeres theorem for matrices

Abstract:In 1993, Fishburn and Graham established the following qualitative extension of the classical Erdős-Szekeres theorem. If $N$ is sufficiently large with respect to $n$, then any $N\times N$ real matrix contains an $n\times n$ submatrix in which every row and every column is monotone. We prove that the smallest such $N$ is at most $2^{n^{4+o(1)}}$, greatly improving the previously best known double-exponential upper bound, and getting close to the best known lower bound $n^{n/2}$. In particular, we prove the following surprising sharp transition in the asymmetric setting. On one hand, every $8n^2\times 2^{n^{4+o(1)}}$ matrix contains an $n\times n$ submatrix, in which every row is mononote. On the other hand, there exist $n^{2}/6\times 2^{2^{n^{1-o(1)}}}$ matrices containing no such submatrix .

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of "Solo Chess", a single-player variant of the game that can be played on <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://chess.com" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. The standard version of the game is played on a regular 8 x 8 chessboard by a single player, with only white pieces, using the following rules: every move must capture a piece, no piece may capture more than 2 times, and if there is a King on the board, it must be the final piece. The goal is to clear the board, i.e, make a sequence of captures after which only one piece is left. We generalize this game to unbounded boards with $n$ pieces, each of which have a given number of captures that they are permitted to make. We show that Generalized Solo Chess is NP-complete, even when it is played by only rooks that have at most two captures remaining. It also turns out to be NP-complete even when every piece is a queen with exactly two captures remaining in the initial configuration. In contrast, we show that solvable instances of Generalized Solo Chess can be completely characterized when the game is: a) played by rooks on a one-dimensional board, and b) played by pawns with two captures left on a 2D board. Inspired by Generalized Solo Chess, we also introduce the Graph Capture Game, which involves clearing a graph of tokens via captures along edges. This game subsumes Generalized Solo Chess played by knights. We show that the Graph Capture Game is NP-complete for undirected graphs and DAGs.

A New Representation of Chinese Chess Board

Abstract:Computer-games research has opened a door to a multi-discipline domain across artificial intelligence, computer-aided design and computer graphics. Chinese chess is one of the most popular board games worldwide and many researches on move generation, position evaluation, searching, opening and endgame play, have been developed. However, few work has been done in the basic representation of Chinese chess board. Currently the representation of 10 times 9 integer array is widely used in Chinese chess programming. In this paper, based on concrete theoretical analysis, a new presentation of Chinese chess board with 6 long integers is proposed. Compared to the traditional 10 times 9 int-array representation that is often redundant in endgames, the cost of storage with the new representation is greatly reduced by an order of magnitude.
Winning Strategies for Generalized Zeckendorf Game

Abstract:Zeckendorf proved that every positive integer $n$ can be written uniquely as the sum of non-adjacent Fibonacci numbers; a similar result holds for other positive linear recurrence sequences. These legal decompositions can be used to construct a game that starts with a fixed integer $n$, and players take turns using moves relating to a given recurrence relation. The game eventually terminates in a unique legal decomposition, and the player who makes the final move wins. For the Fibonacci game, Player $2$ has the winning strategy for all $n>2$. We give a non-constructive proof that for the two-player $(c, k)$-nacci game, for all $k$ and sufficiently large $n$, Player $1$ has a winning strategy when $c$ is even and Player $2$ has a winning strategy when $c$ is odd. Interestingly, the player with the winning strategy can make a mistake as early as the $c + 1$ turn, in which case the other player gains the winning strategy. Furthermore, we proved that for the $(c, k)$-nacci game with players $p \ge c + 2$, no player has a winning strategy for any $n \ge 3c^2 + 6c + 3$. We find a stricter lower boundary, $n \ge 7$, in the case of the three-player $(1, 2)$-nacci game. Then we extend the result from the multiplayer game to multialliance games, showing which alliance has a winning strategy or when no winning strategy exists for some special cases of multialliance games.

Abstract:By assuming a collapsibility definition, we derive some recurrences for counting non-attacking placements of two types of chess pieces with unbounded straight-line moves, specifically the Bishop and the Anassa, placed on a square board. Then we ansatz the closed-form solutions for the recurrences and derive exact expressions for the respective quasi-polynomial coefficients. The main results are simplifications to the known expressions for the Bishop and a general counting formula for the Anassa.

Abstract:Number the cells of a (possibly infinite) chessboard in some way with the numbers 0, 1, 2, ... Consider the cells in order, placing a queen in a cell if and only if it would not attack any earlier queen. The problem is to determine the positions of the queens. We study the problem for a doubly-infinite chessboard of size Z x Z numbered along a square spiral, and an infinite single-quadrant chessboard (of size N x N) numbered along antidiagonals. We give a fairly complete solution in the first case, based on the Tribonacci word. There are connections with combinatorial games.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the graph radii and diameters induced by the $k$-dimensional versions of the well-known six international chess pieces on every finite $\{n \times n \times \dots \times n\} \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^k$ lattice since they originate as many interesting metric spaces for any proper pair $(n,k)$. For this purpose, we finally discuss a mathematically consistent generalization of all the planar FIDE chess pieces to an appropriate $k$-dimensional environment, finding (for any $k \in \mathbb{Z}^+$) the exact values of the graph radii and diameters of the $k$-rook, $k$-king, $k$-bishop, and the corresponding values for the $3$-queen, $3$-knight, and $3$-pawn. We also provide tight bounds for the graph radii and diameters of the $k$-queen, $k$-knight, and $k$-pawn, holding for any $k \geq 4$.
