Abstract:We characterize free products admitting a faithful and highly transitive action. In particular, we show that the group $\PSL_2(\Z)\simeq (\Z/2\Z)*(\Z/3\Z)$ admits a faithful and highly transitive action on a countable set.

Abstract:If $G$ is a finitely generated group and $X$ a $G$-set, the growth of the action of $G$ on $X$ is the function that measures the largest cardinality of a ball of radius $n$ in the Schreier graph $\Gamma(G,X)$. In this note we consider the following stability problem: if $G,H$ are finitely generated groups admitting a faithful action of growth bounded above by a function $f$, does the free product $G \ast H$ also admit a faithful action of growth bounded above by $f$? We show that the answer is positive under additional assumptions, and negative in general. In the negative direction, our counter-examples are obtained with $G$ either the commutator subgroup of the topological full group of a minimal and expansive homeomorphism of the Cantor space; or $G$ a Houghton group. In both cases, the group $G$ admits a faithful action of linear growth, and we show that $G\ast H$ admits no faithful action of subquadratic growth provided $H$ is non-trivial. In the positive direction, we describe a class of groups that admit actions of linear growth and is closed under free products and exhibit examples within this class, among which the Grigorchuk group.

Abstract:We explore classifiability of crossed products of actions of countable amenable groups on compact, metrizable spaces. It is completely understood when such crossed products are simple, separable, unital, nuclear and satisfy the UCT: these properties are equivalent to the combination of minimality and topological freeness, and the challenge in this context is establishing $\mathcal{Z}$-stability. While most of the existing results in this direction assume freeness of the action, there exist numerous natural examples of minimal, topologically free (but not free) actions whose crossed products are classifiable.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of crossed product of a product system by a locally compact group. We prove that the crossed product of a row-finite and faithful product system by an amenable group is also a row-finite and faithful product system. We illustrate with examples related to group actions on $k$-graphs and to higher rank Doplicher-Roberts algebras.

Abstract:This paper is motivated by the study of probability measure-preserving (pmp) actions of free groups using continuous model theory. Such an action is treated as a metric structure that consists of the measure algebra of the probability measure space expanded by a family of its automorphisms. We prove that the existentially closed pmp actions of a given free group form an elementary class, and therefore the theory of pmp $\mathbb{F}_k$-actions has a model companion. We show this model companion is stable and has quantifier elimination. We also prove that the action of $\mathbb{F}_k$ on its profinite completion with the Haar measure is metrically generic and therefore, as we show, it is existentially closed. We deduce our main result from a more general theorem, which gives a set of sufficient conditions for the existence of a model companion for the theory of $\mathbb{F}_k$-actions on a separably categorical, stable metric structure.

Non-free almost finite actions for locally finite-by-virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ groups

Abstract:In this paper, we study almost finiteness and almost finiteness in measure of non-free actions. Let $\alpha:G\curvearrowright X$ be a minimal action of a locally finite-by-virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ group $G$ on the Cantor set $X$. We prove that under certain assumptions, the action $\alpha$ is almost finite in measure if and only if $\alpha$ is essentially free. As an application, we obtain that any minimal topologically free action of a virtually $\mathbb{Z}$ group on an infinite compact metrizable space with the small boundary property is almost finite. This is the first general result, assuming only topological freeness, in this direction, and these lead to new results on uniform property $\Gamma$ and $\mathcal{Z}$-stability for their crossed product $C^*$-algebras. Some concrete examples of minimal topological free (but non-free) subshifts are provided.

Abstract:We prove that if a totally disconnected locally compact group admits a topologically free boundary, then the reduced crossed product of continuous functions on its Furstenberg boundary by the group is simple. We also prove a partial converse of this result.

Abstract:Given a Coxeter system with a fixed Coxeter element, there is a surjective group morphism $\Psi$ from the standard to the dual Artin groups. We give conditions that are sufficient, necessary or equivalent to $\Psi$ being an isomorphism. In particular, we prove that if the Hurwitz action on the reduced words of any element in the noncrossing partition poset is transitive, and if the Hurwitz action on the reduced words of the Coxeter element has the same stabilizer as essentially the same action viewed in the standard Artin group, then $\Psi$ is an isomorphism. Both of those conditions are already known in some cases, notably in spherical and affine types. We then prove that taking the free (or direct) product of groups that satisfy those two conditions yields another group that, with a suitable Coxeter element, also satisfies them.

Abstract:We give the first examples of (non-amenable group) amenable actions on stably finite simple C*-algebras. More precisely, we give such actions for any countable group in an explicit way. The main ingredients of our construction are the full Fock space of the regular representation and a trace-scaling automorphism.

Abstract:Abstract We introduce the notion of tracial amenability for actions of discrete groups on unital, tracial C $$^*$$ ∗ -algebras, as a weakening of amenability where all the relevant approximations are done in the uniform trace norm. We characterize tracial amenability with various equivalent conditions, including topological amenability of the induced action on the trace space. Our main result concerns the structure of crossed products: for groups containing the free group $$F_2$$ F 2 , we show that outer, tracially amenable actions on simple, unital, $$\mathcal {Z}$$ Z -stable C $$^*$$ ∗ -algebras always have purely infinite crossed products. Finally, we give concrete examples of tracially amenable actions of free groups on simple, unital AF-algebras.

On the space of subgroups of Baumslag-Solitar groups II: High transitivity

Abstract:We continue our study of the perfect kernel of the space of transitive actions of Baumslag-Solitar groups by investigating high transitivity. We show that actions of finite phenotype are never highly transitive, except when the phenotype is $1$, in which case high transitivity is actually generic. In infinite phenotype, high transitivity is generic, except when |m|=|n|$ where it is empty. We also reinforce the dynamical properties of the action by conjugation on the perfect kernel that we had established in our first paper, replacing topological transitivity by high topological transitivity.

Abstract:Almost finiteness was introduced in the seminal work of Kerr as an dynamical analogue of Z-stability in the Toms-Winter conjecture. In this article, we provide the first examples of minimal, topologically free actions of amenable groups that have mean dimension zero but are not almost finite. More precisely, we prove that there exists an infinite family of amenable wreath products that admit topologically free, minimal profinite actions on the Cantor space which fail to be almost finite. Furthermore, these actions have dynamical comparison. This intriguing new phenomenon shows that Kerr's dynamical analogue of Toms-Winter conjecture fails for minimal, topologically free actions of amenable groups. The notion of allosteric group holds a significant position in our study. A group is allosteric if it admits a minimal action on a compact space with an invariant ergodic probability measure that is topologically free but not essentially free. We study allostery of wreath products and provide the first examples of allosteric amenable groups.

Abstract:We consider a crossed product of a unital simple separable nuclear stably finite Z-stable C*-algebra A by a strongly outer cocycle action of a discrete countable amenable group \Gamma. Under the assumption that A has finitely many extremal tracial states and \Gamma is elementary amenable, we show that the twisted crossed product C*-algebra is Z-stable. As an application, we also prove that all strongly outer cocycle actions of the Klein bottle group on Z are cocycle conjugate to each other. This is the first classification result for actions of non-abelian infinite groups on stably finite C*-algebras.

Spectral gap for products and a strong normal subgroup theorem

Abstract:We establish a general spectral gap theorem for actions of products of groups which may replace Kazhdan's property (T) in various situations. As a main application, we prove that a confined subgroup of an irreducible lattice in a higher rank semisimple Lie group is of finite index. This significantly strengthens the classical normal subgroup theorem of Margulis and removes the property (T) assumption from the recent counterpart result of Fraczyk and Gelander. We further show that any confined discrete subgroup of a higher rank semisimple Lie group satisfying a certain irreducibility condition is an irreducible lattice. This implies a variant of the Stuck-Zimmer conjecture under a strong irreducibility assumption of the action.

Amenable group actions on $L_p$ lattices

Abstract:A result by Ornstein and Weiss states that a free and measure-preserving action of an amenable group on a probability space yields a decomposition of the space in disjoint images, up to a small error, analogous to the one given by the Rokhlin lemma in the case of a single transformation. We generalise this result to non-singular actions, and use it to prove that the theory of an action by automorphisms of an amenable group on a Banach $L_p$ lattice admits a model companion, which is stable and has quantifier elimination.

Abstract:We prove a bi-ordered version of Rivas' result for free products of left-order groups. Namely, we show that a free product of bi-ordered groups does not admit isolated bi-ordering. Our method relies on the dynamical realization of bi-ordered groups. We also show that the natural action of the automorphism group $Aut(F_2)$ on $F_2$ does not have dense orbits.

Abstract:We give a concise presentation for the outer automorphism group of a free product with no free rank, whose factors are non-trivial, freely indecomposable, not infinite cyclic, and pairwise non-isomorphic. This is achieved by considering the action of the outer automorphism group on a particular subcomplex of `Outer Space', which we show to be simply connected. We then apply a theorem of K. S. Brown to extract our presentation.
