The cases r=1,2 are well-known; a product formula for the case r=3 was conjectured by Adams-Watters and later proved by Britnell. In this note we solve the problem for arbitrary r.

Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:Let $\alpha(n)$ denote the number of perfect square permutations in the symmetric group $S_n$. The conjecture $\alpha(2n+1) = (2n+1) \alpha(2n)$, provided by Stanley[4], was proved by Blum[1] using a generating function. This paper presents a combinatorial proof for this conjecture. At the same time, we demonstrate that all permutations with an even number of even cycles in both $S_{2n}$ and $S_{2n+1}$ can be categorized into three distinct types that correspond to each other.

Borel Combinatorics of Abelian Group Actions

Abstract:We study the free part of the Bernoulli action of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ for $n\geq 2$ and the Borel combinatorics of the associated Schreier graphs. We construct orthogonal decompositions of the spaces into marker sets with various additional properties. In general, for Borel graphs $\Gamma$ admitting weakly orthogonal decompositions, we show that $\chi_B(\Gamma)\leq 2\chi(\Gamma)-1$ under some mild assumptions. As a consequence, we deduce that the Borel chromatic number for $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^n})$ is $3$ for all $n\geq 2$. Weakly orthogonal decompositions also give rise to Borel unlayered toast structures. We also construct orthogonal decompositions of $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^2})$ with strong topological regularity, in particular with all atoms homeomorphic to a disk. This allows us to show that there is a Borel perfect matching for $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^n})$ for all $n\geq 2$ and that there is a Borel lining of $F(2^{\mathbb{Z}^2})$.

Counting of surfaces and computational complexity in column sums of symmetric group character tables

Abstract:The character table of the symmetric group $S_n$, of permutations of $n$ objects, is of fundamental interest in theoretical physics, combinatorics as well as computational complexity theory. We investigate the implications of an identity, which has a geometrical interpretation in combinatorial topological field theories, relating the column sum of normalised central characters of $S_n$ to a sum of structure constants of multiplication in the centre of the group algebra of $S_n$. The identity leads to the proof that a combinatorial computation of the column sum belongs to complexity class \shP. The sum of structure constants has an interpretation in terms of the counting of branched covers of the sphere. This allows the identification of a tractable subset of the structure constants related to genus zero covers. We use this subset to prove that the column sum for a conjugacy class labelled by partition $\lambda$ is non-vanishing if and only if the permutations in the conjugacy class are even. This leads to the result that the determination of the vanishing or otherwise of the column sum is in complexity class \pP. The subset gives a positive lower bound on the column sum for any even $ \lambda$. For any disjoint decomposition of $ \lambda$ as $\lambda_1 \sqcup \lambda_2 $ we obtain a lower bound for the column sum at $ \lambda$ in terms of the product of the column sums for $ \lambda_1$ and$\lambda_2$. This can be expressed as a super-additivity property for the logarithms of column sums of normalized characters.

Non-Abelian Factors for Actions of $\mathbb{Z}$ and Other Non-$C^*$-Simple Groups

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a countable group and $(X, \Gamma)$ a compact topological dynamical system. We study the question of the existence of an intermediate $C^*$-subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ $$C^{*}_{r}(\Gamma)<\mathcal{A}<C(X)\rtimes_r\Gamma,$$ which is not of the form $\mathcal{A} = C(Y) \rtimes_r \Gamma$, corresponding to a factor map $(X,\Gamma) \to (Y,\Gamma)$. Here $ C^{*}_{r} (\Gamma)$ and $C(X) \rtimes_r \Gamma$ are the reduced $C^*$-algebras of $\Gamma$ and $(X,\Gamma)$ respectively. Our main results are (1) For $\Gamma$, which is not $C^*$-simple, if $(X,\Gamma)$ admits a $\Gamma$-invariant probability measure, then such a sub-algebra always exists. (2) For $\Gamma = \mathbb{Z}$ and $(X, \Gamma)$ an irrational rotation of the circle $X = S^1$, we give a full description of all these non-crossed-product subalgebras.

Commuting matrices via commuting endomorphisms

Abstract:Evidences have suggested that counting representations are sometimes tractable even when the corresponding classification problem is almost impossible, or "wild" in a precise sense. Such counting problems are directly related to matrix counting problems, many of which are under active research. Using a general framework we formulate for such counting problems, we reduce some counting problems about commuting matries to problems about endomorphisms on all finite abelian $p$-groups. As an application, we count finite modules on some first examples of nonreduced curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We also relate some classical and hard problems regarding commuting triples of matrices to a conjecture of Onn on counting conjugacy classes of the automorphism group of an arbitrary finite abelian $p$-group.

Rigidity of braid group actions on $\mathbb{R}$ and of low-genus mapping class group actions on $S^1$

Abstract:Every nontrivial action of the braid group $B_n$ on $\mathbb{R}$ by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms yields, up to conjugation by a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}$, a representation $\rho : B_n \rightarrow \mathrm{H\widetilde{ome}o}_+(S^1)$ and therefore determines a translation number for every element of $B_n$. In this manuscript we offer a simple characterisation of which actions of $B_n$ on $\mathbb{R}$ produce translation numbers that agree with those arising from the standard Nielsen-Thurston action on $\mathbb{R}$. Our approach is to prove an analogous statement concerning left orderings of $B_n$ via a technique that uses the space of left orderings of $B_n$, the isolated points in this space, and the natural conjugacy action of $B_n$. We use this result to extend recent rigidity results of Mann and Wolff concerning mapping class group actions on $S^1$ to the case of low-genus surfaces with marked points.

Counting conjugacy classes of elements of finite order in exceptional Lie groups

Abstract:This paper continues the study of two numbers that are associated with Lie groups. The first number is $N(G,m)$, the number of conjugacy classes of elements in $G$ whose order divides $m$. The second number is $N(G,m,s)$, the number of conjugacy classes of elements in $G$ whose order divides $m$ and which have $s$ distinct eigenvalues, where we view $G$ as a matrix group in its smallest-degree faithful representation. We describe systematic algorithms for computing both numbers for $G$ a connected and simply-connected exceptional Lie group. We also provide explicit results for all of $N(G,m)$, $N(G_2,m,s)$, and $N(F_4,m,s)$. The numbers $N(G,m,s)$ were previously known only for the classical Lie groups; our results for $N(G,m)$ agree with those already in the literature but are obtained differently.

Cartan Actions of Higher Rank Abelian Groups and their Classification

Abstract:We study $\mathbb{R}^k \times \mathbb{Z}^\ell$ actions on arbitrary compact manifolds with a projectively dense set of Anosov elements and 1-dimensional coarse Lyapunov foliations. Such actions are called totally Cartan actions. We completely classify such actions as built from low-dimensional Anosov flows and diffeomorphisms and affine actions, verifying the Katok-Spatzier conjecture for this class. This is achieved by introducing a new tool, the action of a dynamically defined topological group describing paths in coarse Lyapunov foliations, and understanding its generators and relations. We obtain applications to the Zimmer program.

Abstract:We examine the symmetry of the complement of a non-trivial knot K in S3 and obtain a classification of the actions of finite groups on the complement of a non-trivial knot in the case where the actions extend to non-fixed point free actions on the three sphere. We prove the result by showing first an extension theorem which says that any action of finite group on a non-trivial knot complement extends to an action on the three sphere and then by applying the solution of the Smith conjecture.

Abstract:Generating functions for the number of commuting m-tuples in the symmetric groups are obtained. We define a natural sequence of ``orbifold Euler characteristics'' for a finite group G acting on a manifold X. Our definition generalizes the ordinary Euler characteristic of X/G and the string-theoretic orbifold Euler characteristic. Our formulae for commuting m-tuples underlie formulas that generalize the results of Macdonald and Hirzebruch-Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products.

Rigid-Recurrent Sequences for Actions of Finite Exponent Groups

Abstract:The focus of this paper is to better understand the coexistence of rigidity, weak mixing, and recurrence by constructing thin sets in the product of countably many copies of the finite cyclic group of order q. A Kronecker-type set K is a subset of this group on which every continuous function into the complex unit circle equals the restriction, to K, of a character in the group's Pontryagin dual. Ackelsberg proves that if, for all q > 1, there exists a perfect Kronecker-type set generating a dense subgroup, then there exist large rigidity sequences for weak mixing systems of actions by countable discrete abelian groups. Ackelsberg shows the existence of such sets for prime values of q, while we construct them for all q > 1.

Abstract:We solve a problem in enumerative combinatorics which is equivalent to counting topological types of certain group actions on compact Riemann surfaces. Let $V_2(F_p)$ be the two-dimensional vector space over $F_p$, the field with $p$ elements, $p$ an odd prime. We count orbits of the general linear group $GL_2(F_p)$ on certain multisets consisting of $R \geq 3$ non-zero columns from $V_2(F_p)$. The $R$-multisets are `zero-sum,' that is, the sum (mod $p$) over the columns in the multiset is $[\begin{smallmatrix} 0 \\ 0 \end{smallmatrix}]$. The orbit count yields the number of topological types of fully ramified actions of the elementary abelian $p$-group of rank $2$ on compact Riemann surfaces of genus $1+ Rp(p-1)/2-p^2.$

The base size of the symmetric group acting on subsets

Abstract:A base for a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $\Omega$ is a subset $\mathcal{B}$ of $\Omega$ such that the pointwise stabiliser $G_{(\mathcal{B})}$ is trivial. Let $n$ and $r$ be positive integers with $n>2r$. The symmetric and alternating groups $\mathrm{S}_n$ and $\mathrm{A}_n$ admit natural primitive actions on the set of $r$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$. Building on work of Halasi [6], we provide explicit expressions for the base sizes of all of these actions, and hence determine the base size of all primitive actions of $\mathrm{S}_n$ and $\mathrm{A}_n$.

The Conjugacy Ratio of Abelian-by-$\mathbb Z$ Groups

Abstract:Let $G = K \rtimes \langle t \rangle $ be a finitely generated group where $K$ is abelian and $\langle t\rangle$ is the infinite cyclic group. Let $ R $ be a finite symmetric subset of $K$ such that $S = \{ (r,1),(0,t^{\pm 1}) \mid r \in R \}$ is a generating set of $G$. We prove that the spherical conjugacy ratio, and hence the conjugacy ratio, of $G$ with respect to $S$ is $0$ unless $G$ is virtually abelian, confirming a conjecture of Ciobanu, Cox and Martino in this case. We also show that the Baumslag--Solitar group $\mathrm{BS}(1,2)$ has a one-sided Følner sequence $F$ such that the conjugacy ratio with respect to $F$ is non-zero, even though $\mathrm{BS}(1,2)$ is not virtually abelian. This is in contrast to two-sided Følner sequences, where Tointon showed that the conjugacy ratio with respect to a two-sided Følner sequence is positive if and only if the group is virtually abelian.

Abstract:Let $n$ be a non-negative integer. Combining algebraic and combinatorial techniques, we investigate for which pairs $(G,\rho)$ of a subgroup $G$ of the symmetric group $S_n$ and an irreducible character $\rho$ of $G$ the induced character $\rho\!\uparrow^{S_n}$ is multiplicity-free. As a result, for $n\geq 66$, we classify all subgroups $G\leq S_n$ which give rise to such a pair. Moreover, for the majority of these groups $G$ we identify all the possible choices of the irreducible character $\rho$, assuming $n\geq 73$.

Symmetric A actions on $\mathcal{A}(2)$

Abstract:We describe the variety of `symmetric' left actions of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra $\mathcal{A}$ on its subalgebra $\mathcal{A}(2)$. These arise as the cohomology of $\text{v}_2$ self maps $\Sigma^7 Z \longrightarrow Z$, as in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1608.06250" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1608.06250">arXiv:1608.06250</a> [math.AT]. There are $256$ $\mathbb{F}_2$ points in this variety, arising from $16$ such actions of $Sq^8$ and, for each such, $16$ actions of $Sq^{16}$. We describe in similar fashion the 1600 $\mathcal{A}$ actions on $\mathcal{A}(2)$ found by Roth(1977) and the inclusion of the variety of symmetric actions into the variety of all actions. We also describe two related varieties of $\mathcal{A}$ actions, the maps between these and the behavior of Spanier-Whitehead duality on these varieties. Finally, we note that the actions which have been used in the literature correspond to the simplest choices, in which all the coordinates equal zero.

Finite abelian groups acting on rationally connected threefolds I: Groups of product type

Abstract:We initiate the study of finite abelian groups that faithfully act on three-dimensional rationally connected varieties. We show that these groups can be naturally divided into three types. The first type consists of finite abelian groups that are products of two groups that belong to the Cremona group of rank 1 and 2, respectively; the second type consists of cyclic extensions of finite abelian groups acting on a K3 surface; the third type consists of groups that act on terminal Fano threefolds with empty anti-canonical linear system. We also establish a boundedness result for the groups of the second type.

How large is the character degree sum compared to the character table sum for a finite group?

Abstract:In 1961, Solomon gave upper and lower bounds for the sum of all the entries in the character table of a finite group in terms of elementary properties of the group. In a different direction, we consider the ratio of the character table sum to the sum of the entries in the first column, also known as the character degree sum, in this work. First, we propose that this ratio is at most two for many natural groups. Secondly, we extend a conjecture of Fields to postulate that this ratio is at least one with equality if and only if the group is abelian. We establish the validity of this property and conjecture for all finite irreducible Coxeter groups. In addition, we prove the conjecture for generalized symmetric groups. The main tool we use is that the sum of a column in the character table of an irreducible Coxeter group (resp. generalized symmetric group) is given by the number of square roots (resp. absolute square roots) of the corresponding conjugacy class representative. As a byproduct of our results, we show that the asymptotics of character table sums is the same as the number of involutions in symmetric, hyperoctahedral and demihyperoctahedral groups. We also derive explicit generating functions for the character table sums for these latter groups as infinite products of continued fractions. In the same spirit, we prove similar generating function formulas for the number of square roots and absolute square roots in $n$ for the generalized symmetric groups $G(r,1,n)$.

Abstract:A LAnKe (also known as a Lie algebra of the $n$th kind, or a Filippov algebra) is a vector space equipped with a skew-symmetric $n$-linear form that satisfies the generalized Jacobi identity. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_m$ acts on the multilinear part of the free LAnKe on $m=(n-1)k+1$ generators, where $k$ is the number of brackets. The corresponding representation was studied by Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs, who asked whether for $n \ge k$, its irreducible decomposition contains no summand whose Young diagram has at most $k-1$ columns. It is known that the answer is affirmative if $k \le 3$. In this paper, we show that the answer is affirmative for all $k$.
