Abstract:We determine the topology of the moduli space of periodic tilings of the plane by parallelograms. To each such tiling, we associate combinatorial data via the zone curves of the tiling. We show that all tilings with the same combinatorial data form an open subset in a suitable Euclidean space that is homotopy equivalent to a circle. Moreover, for any choice of combinatorial data, we construct a canonical tiling with these data.

Abstract:The first-order flex space of the bar-joint framework $G_P$ of a parallelogram tiling $P$ is determined in terms of an explicit free basis. Applications are given to braced parallelogram frameworks and to quasicrystal frameworks associated with multigrids in the sense of de Bruijn and Beenker. In particular we characterise rigid bracing patterns, identify quasicrystal frameworks with finite dimensional flex spaces, and define a zero mode spectrum.

Abstract:This article addresses the problem of enumerating the tilings of a plane by lozenges, under the restriction that these tilings be doubly periodic. Kasteleyn's Pfaffian method is applied to compute the generating function of those permutations. The monomials of this function represent the different types of tilings, grouping them according to the number of lozenges in each orientation. We present an alternative approach to compute these types. Finally, two additional classes of tilings are proposed as open enumeration problems.

Abstract:Edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent quadrilaterals are completely classified in a series of three papers. This last one classifies the case of a 3 ‚ĀĘ b -quadrilaterals with some irrational angle: there are a sequence of 1-parameter families of quadrilaterals admitting 2-layer earth map tilings together with their basic flip modifications under extra condition, and 5 sporadic quadrilaterals each admitting a special tiling. A summary of the full classification is presented in the end.

Abstract:In 1885, Fedorov discovered that a convex domain can form a lattice tiling of the Euclidean plane if and only if it is a parallelogram or a centrally symmetric hexagon. his paper proves the following results. Except for parallelograms and centrally symmetric hexagons, there are no other convex domains that can form two-, three- or four-fold lattice tilings in the Euclidean plane. However, there are both octagons and decagons that can form five-fold lattice tilings. Whenever n >= 3, there are non-parallelohedral polytopes that can form five-fold lattice tilings in the n-dimensional Euclidean space.

Abstract:We describe a method to classify crystallographic tilings of the Euclidean and hyperbolic planes by tiles whose stabiliser group contains translation isometries or whose topology is not that of a closed disk. We tackle this problem from two different viewpoints, one with constructive techniques to enumerate such tilings and the other from a viewpoint of classification. The methods are purely topological and generalise Delaney-Dress combinatorial tiling theory. The classification is up to equivariant equivalence and is achieved by viewing tilings as decorations of orbifolds.

Abstract:We classify edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons with the edge combination $a^4b$ and with any irrational angle in degree: they are three $1$-parameter families of pentagonal subdivisions of the Platonic solids, with $12, 24$ and $60$ tiles; and a sequence of $1$-parameter families of pentagons admitting non-symmetric $3$-layer earth map tilings together with their various rearrangements under extra conditions. Their parameter moduli and geometric data are all computed in both exact and numerical form. The total numbers of different tilings for any fixed such pentagon are counted explicitly. As a byproduct, the degenerate pentagons produce naturally many new non-edge-to-edge quadrilateral tilings. A sequel of this paper will handle $a^4b$-pentagons with all angles being rational in degree by solving some trigonometric Diophantine equations, to complete our full classification of edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons.

Abstract:This paper studies equable parallelograms whose vertices lie on the Eisenstein lattice. Using Rosenberger's Theorem on generalised Markov equations, we show that the set of these parallelograms forms naturally an infinite tree, all of whose vertices have degree 4, bar the root which has degree 3. This study naturally complements the authors' previous study of equable parallelograms whose vertices lie on the integer lattice.

Abstract:A framework, which is a (possibly infinite) graph with a realization of its vertices in the plane, is called flexible if it can be continuously deformed while preserving the edge lengths. We focus on flexibility of frameworks in which 4-cycles form parallelograms. For the class of frameworks considered in this paper (allowing triangles), we prove that the following are equivalent: flexibility, infinitesimal flexibility, the existence of at least two classes of an equivalence relation based on 3- and 4-cycles and being a non-trivial subgraph of the Cartesian product of graphs. We study the algorithmic aspects and the rotationally symmetric version of the problem. The results are illustrated on frameworks obtained from tessellations by regular polygons.

Abstract:We apply Diophantine analysis to classify edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent almost equilateral quadrilaterals (i.e., edge combination ). Parallel to a complete classification by Cheung, Luk, and Yan, the method implemented here is more systematic and applicable to other related tiling problems. We also provide detailed geometric data for the tilings.

Abstract:We demonstrate theoretically how a two-dimensional electron gas can be used to probe local potential profiles using the Hall effect. For small magnetic fields, the Hall resistance is inversely proportional to the average potential profile in the Hall cross and is independent of the shape and the position of this profile in the junction. The bend resistance, on the other hand, is much more sensitive on the exact details of the local potential profile in the cross junction.

Abstract:In 1966, Zalgaller completed the task of determining all edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by regular spherical polygons, proving that the only possibilities are the Platonic tilings, the Archimedean tilings, the Johnson tilings, the prism and anti-prism tilings and two tiles sharing their boundaries. We determine all non-edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by regular spherical polygons of three or more sides, showing there are five continuous families of kaleidoscope tilings, fifteen continuous families of 2-hemisphere tilings, four lunar tilings, five sporadic tilings, five composed tilings and one magic triangle tiling.

Abstract:A rectangle in the plane can be continuously deformed preserving its edge lengths, but adding a diagonal brace prevents such a deformation. Bolker and Crapo characterized combinatorially which choices of braces make a grid of squares infinitesimally rigid using a bracing graph: a bipartite graph whose vertices are the columns and rows of the grid, and a row and column are adjacent if and only if they meet at a braced square. Duarte and Francis generalized the notion of the bracing graph to rhombic carpets, proved that the connectivity of the bracing graph implies rigidity and stated the other implication without proof. Nagy Kem gives the equivalence in the infinitesimal setting. We consider continuous deformations of braced frameworks consisting of a graph from a more general class and its placement in the plane such that every 4-cycle forms a parallelogram. We show that rigidity of such a braced framework is equivalent to the non-existence of a special edge coloring, which is in turn equivalent to the corresponding bracing graph being connected.

Abstract:Recently I made a poll of a large number of students on the status of the rather uninteresting parallelogram. Discounting the defining statement that it has equal opposite sides, I could find no information at large other than “its diagonals bisect each other.” Somehow this rather unpretentious figure has been laid aside to rust and I propose here to apply a bit of polish to see if its lustre cannot be brought forth in true brilliance. I think you will agree in the end that it does possess some memorable qualities which, although interesting, we are asked to establish equivalence of two plane polygons of equal area by imposing one upon another. If these polygons are not identical in size and shape, then it follows that we should be able to create partial polygons from each given figure in such a way that these partial polygons will be congruent in pairs. In this transformation from one given polygon to another by dissection the parallelogram plays a central role that is highly important.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate some polynomial conditions that arise from Euclidean geometry. First we study polynomials related to quadrilaterals with supplementary angles, this includes convex cyclic quadrilaterals, as well as certain concave quadrilaterals. Then we consider polynomials associated with quadrilaterals with some equal angles, which include convex and concave tilted kites. Some of the results are proved using Groebner bases computations.

Abstract:We prove that for any infinite countable amenable group G, any epsilon > 0 and any finite subset K subset of G, there exists a tiling (partition of G into finite "tiles" using only finitely many "shapes"), where all the tiles are (K, epsilon)-invariant. Moreover, our tiling has topological entropy zero (i.e., subexponential complexity of patterns). As an application, we construct a free action of G (in the sense that the mappings, associated to elements of G other than the unit, have no fixed points) on a zero-dimensional space, such that the topological entropy of this action is zero.

Abstract:Rectangulations are decompositions of a square into finitely many axis-aligned rectangles. We describe realizations of $(n-1)$-dimensional polytopes associated with two combinatorial families of rectangulations composed of $n$ rectangles. They are defined as quotientopes of natural lattice congruences on the weak Bruhat order on permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, and their skeleta are flip graphs on rectangulations. We give simple vertex and facet descriptions of these polytopes, in particular elementary formulas for computing the coordinates of the vertex corresponding to each rectangulation, in the spirit of J.-L. Loday's realization of the associahedron.
