Abstract:We apply Diophantine analysis to classify edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent almost equilateral quadrilaterals (i.e., edge combination ). Parallel to a complete classification by Cheung, Luk, and Yan, the method implemented here is more systematic and applicable to other related tiling problems. We also provide detailed geometric data for the tilings.

Together with our series of papers that classifies edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons, we complete the classification of edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent polygons.

Abstract:In 1966, Zalgaller completed the task of determining all edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by regular spherical polygons, proving that the only possibilities are the Platonic tilings, the Archimedean tilings, the Johnson tilings, the prism and anti-prism tilings and two tiles sharing their boundaries. We determine all non-edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by regular spherical polygons of three or more sides, showing there are five continuous families of kaleidoscope tilings, fifteen continuous families of 2-hemisphere tilings, four lunar tilings, five sporadic tilings, five composed tilings and one magic triangle tiling.

Abstract:Edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent quadrilaterals are completely classified in a series of three papers. This last one classifies the case of a 3 ‚ĀĘ b -quadrilaterals with some irrational angle: there are a sequence of 1-parameter families of quadrilaterals admitting 2-layer earth map tilings together with their basic flip modifications under extra condition, and 5 sporadic quadrilaterals each admitting a special tiling. A summary of the full classification is presented in the end.

Abstract:We classify edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons with the edge combination $a^4b$ and with any irrational angle in degree: they are three $1$-parameter families of pentagonal subdivisions of the Platonic solids, with $12, 24$ and $60$ tiles; and a sequence of $1$-parameter families of pentagons admitting non-symmetric $3$-layer earth map tilings together with their various rearrangements under extra conditions. Their parameter moduli and geometric data are all computed in both exact and numerical form. The total numbers of different tilings for any fixed such pentagon are counted explicitly. As a byproduct, the degenerate pentagons produce naturally many new non-edge-to-edge quadrilateral tilings. A sequel of this paper will handle $a^4b$-pentagons with all angles being rational in degree by solving some trigonometric Diophantine equations, to complete our full classification of edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent pentagons.

Abstract:We classify the special families of dihedral folding tilings of the sphere derived from the Möbius triangle $(2,3,4)$. Our study emerges from the study of isometric foldings in the Riemann sphere and meets at the juncture of the triangle group $\Delta(2,3,4)$. The juxtaposition enables us to apply the classification theorem of edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent triangles and introduces a group theoretical method. The two prototiles of each family consist of the Möbius triangle and another polygon induced by a reflection of the triangle group acting on the Möbius triangle. To enumerate the tilings, we give two solutions to solve the associated constraint satisfaction problem. The methods are not exclusive to this problem and therefore applicable to similar problems of more general settings.

Abstract:The tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by congruent triangles have been extensively studied, and the edge-to-edge tilings have been completely classified. However, not much is known about the tilings by other congruent polygons. In this paper, we classify the simplest case, which is the edge-to-edge tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by 12 congruent pentagons. We find one major class allowing two independent continuous parameters and four classes of isolated examples. The classification is done by first separately classifying the combinatorial, edge length, and angle aspects, and then combining the respective classifications together.

Abstract:A new stationary subdivision scheme is presented for quadrilateral meshes. In contrast to the usual dyadic splitting operation, the number of quadrilaterals increases in every step by a factor of 2. Applying the subdivision twice is equivalent to a dyadic subdivision and a rotation. The presented algorithm is derived from tensor product of cubic B-splines, so the resulting surface is C2 continuous for regular vertices (with valence 4) and C1 continuous for extraordinary vertices (with valence other than 4). The simplicity in geometric operation and the slow topological refinement make the subdivision scheme more suitable for many applications, such as 3D image reconstruction and network transmission.

Abstract:We use the subgraph replacement method to investigate new properties of the tilings of regions on the square lattice with diagonals drawn in. In particular, we show that the centrally symmetric tilings of a generalization of the Aztec diamond are always enumerated by a simple product formula. This result generalizes the previous work of Ciucu (1997) and Yang (1992) about symmetric tilings of the Aztec diamond. We also use our method to prove a closed-form product formula for the number of centrally symmetric tilings of a quasi-hexagon.

Abstract:We investigate a new family of regions that is the universal generalization of three well-known region families in the field of enumeration of tilings: the quasi-regular hexagons, the semi-hexagons, and the halved hexagons. Abstract:The work of Mills, Robbins, and Rumsey on cyclically symmetric plane partitions yields a simple product formula for the number of lozenge tilings of a regular hexagon, which are invariant under roation by $120^{\circ}$. In this paper we generalize this result by enumerating the cyclically symmetric lozenge tilings of a hexagon in which four triangles have been removed in the center.

Abstract:AbstractSmoothing of polyhedron with arbitrary topology is an important issue in CAGD and CAD/CAM, but so far it is deemed to be difficult to smooth the complex corners of a polyhedron. In this paper, the concept of distance surfaces of a surface and a solid is introduced, and the incisive properties of such surfaces are addressed which provide a theoretical foundation for modifying a general corner. The method is based on making constricted volume and the maximum distance the volume can be constricted is given too. It is shown that by the proposed method in this paper any polyhedron can be G1 smoothed with quadraic and, sometimes toroidal surfaces. The new approach is suitable for engineering design and NC machining. The associated algorithm based on the classification theorem of corners is simple, fast and robust.

Abstract:For a finite planar graph, it associates with some metric spaces, called (regular) spherical polyhedral surfaces, by replacing faces with regular spherical polygons in the unit sphere and gluing them edge-to-edge. We consider the class of planar graphs which admit spherical polyhedral surfaces with the curvature bounded below by 1 in the sense of Alexandrov, i.e. the total angle at each vertex is at most $2pi$. We classify all spherical tilings with regular spherical polygons, i.e. total angles at vertices are exactly $2pi$. We prove that for any graph in this class which does not admit a spherical tiling, the area of the associated spherical polyhedral surface with the curvature bounded below by 1 is at most $4pi - epsilon_0$ for some $epsilon_0 u003e 0$. That is, we obtain a definite gap between the area of such a surface and that of the unit sphere.

Abstract:We consider incomplete tilings of the equilateral triangle of edge length n that is subdivided into n^2 regular equilateral smaller unit triangles. Pairs of the unit triangles that share a side may be converted into lozenges, leaving some subset of the unit triangles untouched. We count numerically these coverings by lozenges and unit triangles for edge lengths n <= 6: the total and the detailed refinement as a function of the number of lozenges.
