Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new variant of Waring's problem: to express a positive integer n as a sum of s positive integers whose product is a k-th power. We define, in a similar way to that done for g(k) and G(k) in Waring's problem, numbers g'(k) and G'(k). We obtain g'(k) = 2k - 1, G'(p) <= p + 1 for primes p, G'(2p) <= 2p + 2 for odd primes p. Moreover, we obtain several interesting results and make two conjectures about G'(3) and G'(4).

Abstract:For $n \geq 3$, an asymptotic formula is derived for the number of representations of a sufficiently large natural number $N$ as a sum of $r = 2^n + 1$ summands, each of which is an $n$-th power of natural numbers $x_i$, $i = \overline{1, r}$, satisfying the conditions $$ |x_i^n-\mu_iN|\le H,\qquad H\ge N^{1-\theta(n,r)+\varepsilon},\qquad \theta(n,r)=\frac2{(r+1)(n^2-n)}, $$ where $\mu_1, \ldots, \mu_r$ are positive fixed numbers, and $\mu_1 + \ldots + \mu_n = 1$. This result strengthens the theorem of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://E.M.Wright" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.

Abstract:Let $k \geq 2$ and $b \geq 3$ be integers, and suppose that $d_1, d_2 \in \{0,1,\dots, b - 1\}$ are distinct and coprime. Let $\mathcal{S}$ be the set of non-negative integers, all of whose digits in base $b$ are either $d_1$ or $d_2$. Then every sufficiently large integer is a sum of at most $b^{160 k^2}$ numbers of the form $x^k$, $x \in \mathcal{S}$.

Abstract:Waring problem for forms is important and classical in mathematics. It has been widely investigated because of its wide applications in several areas. In this paper, we consider the Waring problem for binary forms with complex coefficients. Firstly, we give an explicit formula for the Waring rank of any binary binomial and several examples to illustrating it. Secondly, we prove that, up to scalar multiplication, there are exactly $\binom{d-1}{2}$ binary forms of degree $d$ with Waring rank two and multiple of three fixed distinct linear forms.

Abstract:We discuss the Waring rank of binary forms of degree 4 and 5, without multiple factors, and point out unexpected relations to the harmonic cross-ratio, j-invariants and the golden ratio. These computations of ranks for binary forms are used to show that the combinatorics of a line arrangement in the complex projective plane does not determine the Waring rank of the defining equation even in very simple situations.

Abstract:The new identifiable case appeared in \cite{AGMO}, together with the analysis on simultaneous identifiability of pairs of ternary forms recently developed in \cite{BG}, suggested the following conjecture towards a complete classification of all simultaneous Waring identifiable cases: for any $ d \geq 2 $, the general polynomial vectors consisting of $ d-1 $ ternary forms of degree $ d $ and a ternary form of degree $ d+1 $, with rank $ \frac{d^2+d+2}{2} $, are identifiable over $ \mathbf{C} $. In this paper, by means of a computer-aided procedure inspired to the one described in \cite{AGMO}, we obtain that the case $ d = 4 $ contradicts the previous conjecture, admitting at least $ 36 $ complex simultaneous Waring decompositions (of length $ 11 $) instead of $ 1 $.

Abstract:In this note, we try to understand the recent development on the Waring-Goldbach problem involving cubes of primes. Especially, we want to determine whether integers that are either primes, squares of primes, cubes of primes, or a cube of an even number can be written as the sum of four cubes of primes. Meanwhile, we raise some problems that may deepen our understanding of the problem about the sum of four cubes of primes. Moreover, some examples suggest that almost all the cubes of integers can be written as the sum of cubes of four integers.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a density version of the Waring-Goldbach problem. Suppose that A is a subset of the primes, and the lower density of A in the primes is larger than 1-1/2k. Abstract:We determine the Waring ranks of all sextic binary forms with complex coefficients using a Geometric Invariant Theory approach. Using the five basic invariants for sextic binary forms, our results give a rapid method to determine the Waring rank of any given sextic binary form. In particular, we shed new light on a claim by E. B. Elliott at the end of the 19th century concerning the binary sextics with Waring rank 3. We show that for binary forms of arbitrary degree the cactus rank, a.k.a. scheme rank, is determined by the corresponding Waring rank. Finally we determine the border ranks of all binary sextics.

Abstract:We address an arithmetic problem in the ring $\F_2[x]$ related to the fixed points of the sum of divisors function. We study some binary polynomials $A$ such that $\sigma(A)/A $ is still a binary polynomial. Technically, we prove that the only (unitary) perfect polynomials over $\F_2$ that are products of $x$, $x+1$ and of Mersenne primes are precisely the nine (resp. nine "classes") known ones. This follows from a new result about the factorization of $M^{2h+1} +1$, for a Mersenne prime $M$ and for a positive integer $h$.

Abstract:Denote by P(K, k) the members of the field K which are sums of kth powers of field elements, by P+(K, k) the set of members of K which are sums of kth powers of totally positive elements of K. We are interested in deciding whether or not there exist integers w(K, k) and g(K, k) such that: a in P(K, k) implies that a is the sum of at most w(K, k) kth powers; a in P+(K, k) implies that a is the sum of at most g(K, k) totally positive kth powers. We will show that if w(K, 2) is finite and provided that the kth powers are dense (in a sense described explicitly in theorem 3) in K, then w(K, k) is also finite for k > 2. The proofs are constructive, but the implied upper bounds for w(K, k) are large. This is to be expected since the method of proof does not use any deep arithmetical or algebraic properties of the field K.

Abstract:The binary sum-of-digits function $\mathsf{s}$ returns the number of ones in the binary expansion of a nonnegative integer. Cusick's Hamming weight conjecture states that, for all integers $t\geq 0$, the set of nonnegative integers $n$ such that $\mathsf{s}(n+t)\geq \mathsf{s}(n)$ has asymptotic density strictly larger than $1/2$. We are concerned with the block-additive function $\mathsf{r}$ returning the number of (overlapping) occurrences of the block $\mathtt{11}$ in the binary expansion of $n$. The main result of this paper is a central limit-type theorem for the difference $\mathsf{r}(n+t)-\mathsf{r}(n)$: the corresponding probability function is uniformly close to a Gaussian, where the uniform error tends to $0$ as the number of blocks of ones in the binary expansion of $t$ tends to $\infty$.

Abstract:Let $n>1$ be a positive integer. Let $R$ be a henselian local ring with residue field $k$ of $n$th level $s_n(k)$. We give some upper and lower bounds for the $n$th Waring number $w_n(R)$ in terms of $w_n(k)$ and $s_n(k)$. In large number of cases we are able to compute $w_n(R)$. Similar results for the $n$th Waring number of the total ring of fractions of $R$ are obtained. We then provide applications. In particular we compute $w_n(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ and $w_n(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ for $n\in\{3,4,5\}$ and any prime $p$.
