Abstract:Waring problem for forms is important and classical in mathematics. It has been widely investigated because of its wide applications in several areas. In this paper, we consider the Waring problem for binary forms with complex coefficients. Firstly, we give an explicit formula for the Waring rank of any binary binomial and several examples to illustrating it. Secondly, we prove that, up to scalar multiplication, there are exactly $\binom{d-1}{2}$ binary forms of degree $d$ with Waring rank two and multiple of three fixed distinct linear forms.

Abstract:We determine the Waring ranks of all sextic binary forms with complex coefficients using a Geometric Invariant Theory approach. Using the five basic invariants for sextic binary forms, our results give a rapid method to determine the Waring rank of any given sextic binary form. In particular, we shed new light on a claim by E. B. Elliott at the end of the 19th century concerning the binary sextics with Waring rank 3. We show that for binary forms of arbitrary degree the cactus rank, a.k.a. scheme rank, is determined by the corresponding Waring rank. Finally we determine the border ranks of all binary sextics.

Abstract:We discuss the Waring rank of binary forms of degree 4 and 5, without multiple factors, and point out unexpected relations to the harmonic cross-ratio, j-invariants and the golden ratio. These computations of ranks for binary forms are used to show that the combinatorics of a line arrangement in the complex projective plane does not determine the Waring rank of the defining equation even in very simple situations.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the open Waring rank of a form of degree d in n variables and prove the that this rank in bounded from above by \binom{n+d-2}{d-1} - \binom{n+d-6}{d-3} whenever n, d >= 3. This proves the same upper bound for the classical Waring rank of a form, improving the result of [BBS] and giving, as far as we know, the best upper bound known.

Abstract:We describe some forms with greater Waring rank than previous examples. In $3$ variables we give forms of odd degree with strictly greater rank than the ranks of monomials, the previously highest known rank. This narrows the possible range of values of the maximum Waring rank of forms in $3$ variables. In $4$ variables we give forms of odd degree with strictly greater than generic rank. In degrees greater than or equal to $5$ these are the first examples showing that there exist forms with Waring rank strictly greater than the generic value.

Abstract:The transmission of forces through a disordered granular system is studied by means of a geometrical-topological approach that reduces the granular packing into a set of layers. This layered structure constitutes the skeleton through which the force chains set up. Given the granular packing, and the region where the force is applied, such a skeleton is uniquely defined. Within this framework, we write an equation for the transmission of the vertical forces that can be solved recursively layer by layer. We find that a special class of analytical solutions for this equation are Lévi-stable distributions. We discuss the link between criticality and fragility and we show how the disordered packing naturally induces the formation of force-chains and arches. We point out that critical regimes, with power law distributions, are associated with the roughness of the topological layers. Whereas, fragility is associated with local changes in the force network induced by local granular rearrangements or by changes in the applied force. The results are compared with recent experimental observations in particulate matter and with computer simulations.

Abstract:We determine the rank of a general real binary form of degree d=4 and d=5. In the case d=5, the possible values of the rank of such general forms are 3,4,5. The existence of three typical ranks was unexpected. We prove that a real binary form of degree d with d real roots has rank d.

Abstract:We study real ternary forms whose real rank equals the generic complex rank, and we characterize the semialgebraic set of sums of powers representations with that rank. Complete results are obtained for quadrics and cubics. For quintics we determine the real rank boundary: it is a hypersurface of degree 168. For quartics, sextics and septics we identify some of the components of the real rank boundary. The real varieties of sums of powers are stratified by discriminants that are derived from hyperdeterminants.

Abstract:We consider some families of binary binomial forms $aX^d+bY^d$, with $a$ and $b$ integers. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that every rational integer $m$ with $|m|\ge 2$ is only represented by a finite number of the forms of this family (with varying $d,a,b$). Furthermore {the number of such forms of degree $\ge d_0$ representing $m$ is bounded by $O(|m|^{(1/d_0)+\epsilon})$} uniformly for $\vert m \vert \geq 2$. We also prove that the integers in the interval $[-N,N]$ represented by one of the form of the family with degree $d\geq d_0$ are almost all represented by some form of the family with degree $d=d_0$. In a previous {paper} we investigated the particular case where the binary binomial forms are positive definite. We now treat the general case by using a lower bound for linear forms of logarithms.

Abstract:Motivated by Witten’s work, we propose a K -theoretic Verlinde/Grassmannian correspondence which relates the GL Verlinde numbers to the K -theoretic quasimap invariants of the Grassmannian. We recover these two types of invariants by imposing different stability conditions on the gauged linear sigma model associated with the Grassmannian. We construct two families of stability conditions connecting the two theories and prove two wall-crossing results. We confirm the Verlinde/Grassmannian correspondence in the rank two case.

Abstract:We determine the border rank of each power of any quadratic form in three variables. Since the problem for rank $1$ and rank $2$ quadratic forms can be reduced to determining the rank of powers of binary forms, we primarily focus on non-degenerate quadratic forms. We begin by considering the quadratic form $q_{n}=x_1^{2}+\dots+x_n^{2}$ in an arbitrary number $n$ of variables. We determine the apolar ideal of any power $q_n^s$, proving that it corresponds to the homogeneous ideal generated by the harmonic polynomials of degree $s+1$. Using this result, we select a specific ideal contained in the apolar ideal for each power of a quadratic form in three variables, which, without loss of generality, we assume to be the form $q_3$. After verifying certain properties, we utilize the recent technique of border apolarity to establish that the border rank of any power $q_3^s$ is equal to the rank of its middle catalecticant matrix, namely $(s+1)(s+2)/2$.

Abstract:We give a lower bound for the Waring rank and cactus rank of forms that are invariant under an action of a connected algebraic group. We use this to improve the Ranestad--Schreyer--Shafiei lower bounds for the Waring ranks and cactus ranks of determinants of generic matrices, Pfaffians of generic skew-symmetric matrices, and determinants of generic symmetric matrices.

Abstract:The binary rank of a 0,1 matrix is the smallest size of a partition of its ones into monochromatic combinatorial rectangles. A matrix M is called (k1,...,km;n1,...,nm) circulant block diagonal if it is a block matrix with m diagonal blocks, such that for each i∈[m], the ith diagonal block of M is the circulant matrix whose first row has ki ones followed by ni−ki zeros, and all of whose other entries are zeros. In this work, we study the binary rank of these matrices as well as the binary rank of their complement, obtained by replacing the zeros by ones and the ones by zeros. In particular, we compare the binary rank of these matrices to their rank over the reals, which forms a lower bound on the former.We present a general method for proving upper bounds on the binary rank of block matrices that have diagonal blocks of some specified structure and ones elsewhere. Using this method, we prove that the binary rank of the complement of a (k1,...,km;n1,...,nm) circulant block diagonal matrix for integers satisfying ni>ki>0 for each i∈[m] exceeds its real rank by no more than the maximum of gcd⁡(ni,ki)−1 over all i∈[m]. We further present several sufficient conditions for the binary rank of these matrices to strictly exceed their real rank. By combining the upper and lower bounds, we determine the exact binary rank of various families of matrices and, in addition, significantly generalize a result of Gregory (J. Comb. Math. & Comb. Comp., 1989).Motivated by a question of Pullman (Linear Algebra Appl., 1988), we study the binary rank of k-regular 0,1 matrices, those having precisely k ones in every row and column, and the binary rank of their complement. As an application of our results on circulant block diagonal matrices, we show that for every k≥2, there exist k-regular 0,1 matrices whose binary rank is strictly larger than that of their complement. Furthermore, we exactly determine for every integer r, the smallest possible binary rank of the complement of a 2-regular 0,1 matrix with binary rank r.

Abstract:We give a variant of Weyl's inequality for systems of forms together with applications. First we use this to give a different formulation of a theorem of B. J. Birch on forms in many variables. More precisely, we show that the dimension of the locus V^* introduced in this work can be replaced by the maximal dimension of the singular loci of forms in the linear system of the given forms. In some cases this improves on the aforementioned theorem of Birch. We say that a system of forms is a Hardy-Littlewood system if the number of integer points on the corresponding variety restricted to a box satisfies the asymptotic behaviour predicted by the classical circle method. As a second application, we improve on a theorem of W. M. Schmidt which states that a system of homogeneous forms of same degree is a Hardy-Littlewood system as soon as the so called $h$-invariant of the system is sufficiently large. In this direction we generalise previous improvements of R. Dietmann on systems of quadratic and cubic forms to systems of forms of general degree.

Abstract:Motivated by (and using tools from) communication complexity, we investigate the relationship between the following two ranks of a $0$-$1$ matrix: its nonnegative rank and its binary rank (the $\log$ of the latter being the unambiguous nondeterministic communication complexity). We prove that for partial $0$-$1$ matrices, there can be an exponential separation. For total $0$-$1$ matrices, we show that if the nonnegative rank is at most $3$ then the two ranks are equal, and we show a separation by exhibiting a matrix with nonnegative rank $4$ and binary rank $5$, as well as a family of matrices for which the binary rank is $4/3$ times the nonnegative rank.

Abstract:Using that the overpartition rank function is the holomorphic part of a harmonic Maass form, we deduce formulas for the rank differences modulo 7. To do so we make improvements on the current state of the overpartition rank function in terms of harmonic Maass forms by giving simple formulas for the transformations under $\mbox{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ as well as formulas for orders at cusps.
