Abstract:Donald A.B. Lindberg M.D.'s interests extended far beyond his scientific expertise into the arts and humanities, as evidenced, for example, by his love of opera, his talents in photography, and his affection for history. It is therefore not surprising that he had a strong interest in the National Library of Medicine's historical programs and services, going beyond supporting these activities to becoming actively involved in some of them. The subject of this essay is Dr. Lindberg's contributions to these programs and services, which may be grouped under three main headings: placing greater emphasis on more contemporary history, promoting the digitization of historical materials to increase access, and enhancing outreach through an exhibition program.

Abstract:James McHenry emigrated from Ireland to the American colonies in 1771. He studied medicine with Dr. Benjamin Rush in Philadelphia and immediately volunteered as an Army surgeon when the Revolutionary War began. After serving in the medical department in Massachusetts, New York and at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania, he became an aide to General George Washington and subsequently an aide to the Marquis de Lafayette. President Washington appointed McHenry Secretary of War and he continued in that post under president John Adams. While Secretary, he revised military regulations, established a professional standing Army, pacified the Indians, enlarged the naval forces, organized the armed forces under civilian authority and initiated plans for a military academy. Baltimore's Fort Whetstone was renamed Fort McHenry in his honor. During the War of 1812, Fort McHenry gained fame as the birthplace of the national anthem of the United States.

Abstract:For decades, physicians wrote much of the history of medicine, often "great man" histories that celebrated their colleagues' accomplishments as part of a celebratory historical narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, social historians challenged this type of scholarship, arguing that it was Whiggish, omitted the flaws of the medical profession, left patients out of the story, and ignored issues of gender, race, and class. This Garrison Lecture revisits this history through the prism of my recent book, The Good Doctor: A Father, a Son, and the Evolution of Medical Ethics, which is essentially a biography of my physician father, Phillip Lerner, and an autobiography. In the talk I ask whether there is true historical value to biography or whether it should serve only as an adjunct to "real" social history. I also historicize my own career, something I chose not to do in the book.

Abstract:On March 19-20, 2017; Howard University hosted a Festschrift inspired by Dr. Leffall's writings (Fig. 1). The celebrants highlighted the broad spectrum of Dr. Leffall's contributions in mentorship, leadership in American Surgery, breast cancer, endocrine cancer, pancreatic cancer, and familial polyposis coli. Perhaps most inspirational was the awe inspiring consistency the presenters demonstrated in describing the personal characteristics Dr. Leffall brings to his academic discourse: his encyclopedic knowledge and recall, his charm, eloquence, humility, and his total dedication to the patient, his students, and trainees. We are greatly indebted to Kirby Bland M.D., FACS for offering the pages of The American Journal of Surgery to illuminate this celebration.

Abstract:In 1863 the MP William Ewart suggested that “it might be practicable... to have inscribed on those houses in London which have been inhabited by celebrated persons, the names of such persons.” Accordingly, in 1867 the first such inscriptions, which came to be known as blue plaques, were put up by the Society of Arts, commemorating Lord Byron and Napoleon III at places in London where they had lived. The society put up 35 such plaques over the next 35 years when the scheme was taken over by the London County Council, which gave way to the Greater London Council in 1965 and finally English Heritage, in 1986. Among London’s 1000 or so blue plaques several medical men and women, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers, are commemorated. They include Cecil Belfield-Clarke, Hannah Billig, Richard Bright, Edith Louisa Cavell, Henry Hallett Dale, Charles Darwin, Henry Havelock Ellis, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, Thomas Hodgkin, William Hunter and his brother John, Joseph Lister, James Mackenzie, Rachel McMillan and her sister Margaret, William Marsden, Florence Nightingale, Ronald Ross, Mary Seacole, Hans Sloane, and George Frederick Still.

[The doctor as a literary character in the Modern Age]

Abstract:The doctor has been from de Antiquity a victim of the people's affective ambivalence, who loves and hates him accord his success or failures. Some rant against the medical guild, but are proud to be patients of one or another doctor, more o less celebrated, referring familiarly to him as Tony or Jim. A certain envy hurts the doctor's image, countered by gratitude, but finally, as times goes by, the continuous progress of medicine has been improving the public perception about the medical work. A quick review of the Modern Age literature, personal, whimsical and may be imperfect, from Michel de Montaigne, in the sixteenth century until. A. J. Cronin in the twentieth, shows the evolution of the doctor as a literary character, first as a tricky ignorant, after like a clown, later fighting epidemics and ending as a self-sacrificing medical researcher.

Abstract:Standing at an imposing 6"2, Dr Alfred Labinjoh was a man of considerable stature in Edinburgh - physically, socially and politically - between the 1920s and 1950s. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, he studied medicine in Edinburgh during the early 1920s and subsequently lived in the city until 1957, working as a popular family doctor. By the 1940s, he ran surgeries in Fountainbridge, Pilton and Newlandrig, as well as the Carnegie Nursing Home at 29 Morningside Road. A prominent freemason, philanthropist, and baritone singer, he was also politically active during the 1920s and 1930s, working with the local Edinburgh African Association to raise money for the Red Cross mission to Ethiopia after fascist Italy's invasion. Although monetary donations and military volunteers from Scotland to Republican Spain are well known, there were also important earlier precedents set by West African students and graduates in Edinburgh in support of Ethiopian resistance fighters which helped galvanise a new form of popular politics in explicit opposition to colonialism and fascism, at home and abroad.

Abstract:Thomas King Chambers clearly intended to be a physician of note and at times indeed he was mentioned in the same breath as Sir James Paget (1814–1899), Sir Henry Acland (1815–1900) and Francis Anstie (1833–1874). At the time of his death his career was pronounced ‘less than brilliant though far from inglorious’. He had made all the right political moves—networking through the medical societies, marrying well and even accompanying the Prince of Wales on his first foreign tour. He wanted to be more than a society doctor, however: he published his clinical lectures and original research, proposed a new paradigm for medicine that he dubbed ‘the renewal of life’ and found his ideas taken up enthusiastically in the United States. Alas, his career foundered when he suffered an aneurysm and underwent amputation through the thigh. Nevertheless, he made significant contributions to the profession through his service on the General Medical Council and to medical education, in particular to medical education for women, through his strong support of the London School of Medicine for Women. To examine his life is to revisit what makes a life meaningful and worthwhile, for Chambers’ life, unlike his body, is remarkably whole.

Abstract:This paper gives a flavor of Dr. Donald A.B. Lindberg’s view of the expanding role of libraries, his curiosity, and his tolerance for taking educated risks, through the creation and nurturing of National Library of Medicine’s Visible Human Project. That project produced the Visible Man and Visible Woman datasets and a suite of tools for presenting and analyzing those and similar datasets. The results are used in teaching anatomy and other medical school courses and in software from the open-source Insight Tool Kit (ITK) that is included in many if not most volume-reconstructing systems. This story is a bit personal. From the beginning we recognized and understood each other since we were both “boys from Brooklyn”.
A Life on the Frontlines: The Legacy of Norman Bethune (1890-1939)

Abstract:Henry Norman Bethune was a prominent Canadian thoracic surgeon who came to fame during the 1930s. After being made a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Bethune became head of thoracic surgery in a hospital in Cartierville, Canada. During this time, he pioneered surgical techniques, published research findings, and invented surgical instruments. Not content with being only a physician, innovator, and humanitarian, Bethune also found himself in medical services on the frontlines of wars in both Spain and China. In Spain, Bethune emphasized the need for prompt blood transfusions and developed mobile blood transfusion services. After the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Bethune traveled to China and quickly organized a mobile operating unit. Following discussions with Chinese leaders, Bethune performed surgeries on the frontlines of conflict in northern China, where his exceptional loyalty to duty became famous throughout the region. Although he met his end at an early age due to septicemia in 1939, his medical legacy carries on in multiple countries and serves to inspire a future generation of medical practitioners.

Abstract:In the 1930s and 1940s, neurosurgeons and clinical neurologists engaged in a fierce exchange on the scope of their specialties. Neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield's rhetoric of therapeutic superiority had a strong impact both on the Rockefeller Foundation's support for his institute and on the self-fashioning of neurologists. Neurologists articulated their identity in spirited performances at the meetings of specialist societies, their response shifting from a combative approach to a focus on internal organization. In light of the neurosurgeons' discourse, by the 1950s a new generation of neurologists created a revisionist narrative that inaccurately portrayed the clinical neurologists of the past as having been uninterested in therapeutics.

Abstract:Zhao Qingchu, a Confucian physician from the Kuaiji area at the end of the Qing Dynasty, learned from famous physicians of the Shao Xing School on exogenous febirle disease (Shang Han) and the You's of the Shi Cai School, drawing from the knowledge of the both medical schools. He quickly became popular for being a physician after giving up his research of Confucianism. He had a wide physician-patient network because of his art of healing as many politicians and celebrities such like Shao Youlian, Zeng Guoquan, Ren Daorong, Xu Yingkui and Ren Fuchang,were his patients. He was taken as a typical example of being good at the medical communication among doctors and doctors-patients in the Yangtze River area in the late Qing Dynasty. For instance, he once had a variety of medical communication with famous physicians, such as Wang Yuezhen, Ma Peizhi, He Lianchen, Zhang Wanxiang, Ling Jialiu and Zhou Bodu. He investigated medical theories in terms of exogenous febirle disease (Shang Han) and integrated his thinking with various medical schools, even attempting to involving western medicine. He was also skilled in teaching his medical thinking to his disciples, such as Zhao Shuan, Yang Zhian, Lu Dongchuan and He Jiren. Zhao Qingchu compiled his medical understanding based on his practice and experiences throughout his life and published this knowledge in Cun Cun Zhai Yi Hua Gao. He had it published many times, leading to a profound influence in Shaoxing and the Jiangnan area at that time.

Abstract:In this essay, the author, Dr. Louis Sullivan, describes his life experiences, having been born in the American South during the period of legal racial segregation. Despite many obstacles, Dr. Sullivan became a physician who founded the predominantly Black Morehouse School of Medicine and served as Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services.In his efforts to improve the health of people from historically marginalized groups, including Black and Brown people as well as those experiencing poverty, Dr. Sullivan organized the Association of Minority Health Professions Schools. He chaired the Sullivan Commission to evaluate the strategies developed to increase the number of Black physicians in the nation. He supported development of the Office for Women's Health and led efforts to create the National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities, both at the National Institutes of Health. When reflecting on his achievements, Dr. Sullivan cites his many mentors and allies who supported him in his career.Despite significant, ongoing resistance to current efforts to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in our society, Dr. Sullivan is optimistic that progress toward this goal will continue to be made. He imparts lessons about persistence and positivity and reflects on several initiatives to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the health professions and in our society more broadly.
Doctor, Indian nationalist and humanitarian: Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari (1880-1936)

Abstract:Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari was a doctor and remarkable political figure in the late 19th century and the first half of 20th century. After studying medicine in Edinburgh, he returned to his country and became interested in political issues. Not unlike other educated Indian Muslims, Ansari first expressed his concerns about the situation in the Ottoman empire and went to Istanbul as the head of the medical mission. Ansari, who became more interested in politics after his days in Istanbul, came to the forefront as one of the leading figures of the Indian independence movement. Along with Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), Ansari did not engage in violence but supported the unity of Muslims and Hindus and opposed communalism. Despite his active political life, Ansari continued his medical studies with great seriousness and played an active role in establishing the Delhi Medical Association in 1914. During this period, his most important aim was to graft animal testicles onto human beings.

Abstract:Literature has been the favored nonmedical pursuit of physicians probably because the practice of medicine is suffused with narratives, the patient's history being one. Arthur Conan Doyle regarded medicine as a "grim romance," Somerset Maugham as an opportunity to see "life in the raw," and William Carlos Williams treated "the patient as a work of art." These sentiments may be linked to humanistic medicine. At some medical schools, literature is taught in the context of and integrated with medicine in an attempt to enhance ethics and empathy which were explicitly expressed by some physician-writers.

Abstract:Hua Shou was a very famous physician at the turn of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties. In addition to his medical skills, his social communication was also very helpful to his fame. Under the tutorship of the Confucianist Han Shuo, and physicians such as Wang Jüzhong and Gao Dongyang in his early days, Hua Shou obtained two identities: Confucian scholar and doctor. The former helped Hua Shou get acceptance from literati group, meanwhile, Hua Shou's medical skill helped him deepen the communication among them. By means of his double identity, Hua Shou got acquaintance with many local and nation-wide scholars and politicians, including Zhao Lian, Chen Xingzhong, Wang Shuyu, Fang Guozhen, Song Xuanxi, Zhu You, Wang Xiyang, Song Lian, Liu Ji, through them Hua Shou's fame spread throughout the country. The whole set of"Lin xia"(Hermit identity) constructed by Ding Henian, Liu Renben and Dai Liang, help Hua Shou attain his bequeathed reputation.
Edgar Buchanan: dentist and popular character actor in movies and television

Abstract:Edgar Buchanan, D.D.S., pursued a diverse mix of careers during his lifetime: as he practiced dentistry, he also worked as a popular film and television actor. Although he eventually relinquished a full-time dental practice for acting, he continued his commitment to clinical dentistry. Acting in 100 films and four television series across a 35-year span (1939-1975). He personified a scheming, yet well-meaning rustic who specialized in "cracker-barrel" philosophy. Typically, he was cast in classic western movies as a bewhiskered character actor. In several films he played a frontier dentist who was always portrayed in a sympathetic and authentic manner. His unique gravelly voice, subtle facial expressions, folksy mannerisms and portly build enabled Buchanan to step into a wide variety of character roles. His most memorable television role was in the classic situation comedy, "Petticoat Junction," (1963-1970), where he played Uncle Joe, a folksy, lovable, free-loader whose many entertaining schemes created chaos.

Abstract:The analysis of three characters corresponding to different spaces and times shows the close link between literature and the history of medicine. On one hand, Don Quixote of La Mancha, who reflects the thought of the last years of the Renaissance and that has been assimilated in contemporary Mexico. On the other hand, Doctors Miguel Francisco Jiménez and Rita Levi Montalcini, who lived in the 19th and 20th centuries, respectively. Despite the years that separate these three personalities, many elements in common are observed that do not lose their validity: the value that is given to health, ethics, tenacity and experience to attain successful results. All three characters refer to the medicine of their time, their achievements and the promotion of humanism, always inherent to medicine.
