Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 1, Page 132-147, March 2024. The basis exchange axiom has been a driving force in the development of matroid theory. However, the axiom gives only a local characterization of the relation of bases, which is a major stumbling block to further progress, and providing a global understanding of the structure of matroid bases is a fundamental goal in matroid optimization. While studying the structure of symmetric exchanges, Gabow proposed the problem that any pair of bases admits a sequence of symmetric exchanges. A different extension of the exchange axiom was proposed by White, who investigated the equivalence of compatible basis sequences. These conjectures suggest that the family of bases of a matroid possesses much stronger structural properties than we are aware of. In the present paper, we study the distance of basis pairs of a matroid in terms of symmetric exchanges. In particular, we give a polynomial-time algorithm that determines a shortest possible exchange sequence that transforms a basis pair into another for split matroids, a class that was motivated by the study of matroid polytopes from a tropical geometry point of view. As a corollary, we verify the above-mentioned long-standing conjectures for this large class. As paving matroids form a subclass of split matroids, our result settles the conjectures for paving matroids as well.

Reconfiguration of basis pairs in regular matroids

Abstract:In recent years, combinatorial reconfiguration problems have attracted great attention due to their connection to various topics such as optimization, counting, enumeration, or sampling. One of the most intriguing open questions concerns the exchange distance of two matroid basis sequences, a problem that appears in several areas of computer science and mathematics. In 1980, White proposed a conjecture for the characterization of two basis sequences being reachable from each other by symmetric exchanges, which received a significant interest also in algebra due to its connection to toric ideals and Gröbner bases. In this work, we verify White's conjecture for basis sequences of length two in regular matroids, a problem that was formulated as a separate question by Farber, Richter, and Shan and Andres, Hochstättler, and Merkel. Most of previous work on White's conjecture has not considered the question from an algorithmic perspective. We study the problem from an optimization point of view: our proof implies a polynomial algorithm for determining a sequence of symmetric exchanges that transforms a basis pair into another, thus providing the first polynomial upper bound on the exchange distance of basis pairs in regular matroids. As a byproduct, we verify a conjecture of Gabow from 1976 on the serial symmetric exchange property of matroids for the regular case.

Abstract:Two pairs of disjoint bases P1=(R1,B1) and P2=(R2,B2) of a matroid M are called equivalent if P1 can be transformed into P2 by a series of symmetric exchanges. In 1980, White conjectured that such a sequence always exists whenever R1∪B1=R2∪B2 . A strengthening of the conjecture was proposed by Hamidoune, stating that the minimum length of an exchange is at most the rank of the matroid. We propose a weighted variant of Hamidoune's conjecture, where the weight of an exchange depends on the weights of the exchanged elements. We prove the conjecture for several matroid classes: strongly base orderable matroids, split matroids, graphic matroids of wheels, and spikes.

Reducing Matroid Optimization to Basis Search

Abstract:In combinatorial optimization, matroids provide one of the most elegant structures for algorithm design. This is perhaps best identified by the Edmonds-Rado theorem relating the success of the simple greedy algorithm to the anatomy of the optimal basis of a matroid [Edm71; Rad57]. As a response, much energy has been devoted to understanding a matroid's favorable computational properties. Yet surprisingly, not much is understood where parallel algorithm design is concerned. Specifically, while prior work has investigated the task of finding an arbitrary basis in parallel computing settings [KUW88], the more complex task of finding the optimal basis remains unexplored. We initiate this study by reexamining Borůvka's minimum weight spanning tree algorithm in the language of matroid theory, identifying a new characterization of the optimal basis by way of a matroid's cocircuits as a result. Furthermore, we then combine such insights with special properties of binary matroids to reduce optimization in a binary matroid to the simpler task of search for an arbitrary basis, with only logarithmic asymptotic overhead. Consequentially, we are able to compose our reduction with a known basis search method of [KUW88] to obtain a novel algorithm for finding the optimal basis of a binary matroid with only sublinearly many adaptive rounds of queries to an independence oracle. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first parallel algorithm for matroid optimization to outperform the greedy algorithm in terms of adaptive complexity, for any class of matroid not represented by a graph.

Abstract:It was conjectured by Kotlar and Ziv that for any two bases $B_1$ and $B_2$ in a matroid $M$ and any subset $X \subset B_1$, there is a subset $Y$ and orderings $x_1 \prec x_2 \prec \cdots \prec x_k$ and $y_1 \prec y_2 \prec \cdots \prec y_k$ of $X$ and $Y$, respectively, such that for $i = 1, \dots ,k$, $B_1 - \{ x_1, \dots ,x_i\} + \{y_1, \dots ,y_k \}$ and $B_2 - \{ y_1, \dots ,y_i\} + \{x_1, \dots ,x_k \}$ are bases; that is, $X$ is serially exchangeable with $Y$. Let $M$ be a rank-$n$ matroid which is representable over $\mathbb{F}_q.$ We show that for $q>2,$ if bases $B_1$ and $B_2$ are chosen randomly amongst all bases of $M$, and if a subset $X$ of size $k \le \ln(n)$ is chosen randomly in $B_1$, then with probability tending to one as $n \rightarrow \infty$, there exists a subset $Y\subset B_2$ such that $X$ is serially exchangeable with $Y.$

On simple matroids with a unique minimal tropical basis

Abstract:In this note we characterize tropical bases as sets of circuits that by orthogonality determine the set of cocircuits of a simple matroid. Furthermore, we show that any circuit, which itself is closed, must be contained in any tropical basis. This yields a characterization of simple matroids which have a unique minimal tropical basis, giving a solution for a problem posted in the Matroid Union Blog.

Abstract:In this work, we explore the application of modulus in matroid theory, specifically, the modulus of the family of bases of matroids. This study not only recovers various concepts in matroid theory, including the strength, fractional arboricity, and principal partitions, but also offers new insights. In the process, we introduce the concept of a Beurling set. Additionally, our study revisits and provides an alternative approach to two of Edmonds's theorems related to the base packing and base covering problems. This is our stepping stone for establishing Fulkerson modulus duality for the family of bases. Finally, we provide a relationship between the base modulus of matroids and their dual matroids, and a complete understanding of the base $p$-modulus across all values of $p$.

Abstract:This paper is a direct generalization of Baker-Bowler theory to flag matroids, including its moduli interpretation as developed by Baker and the second author for matroids. More explicitly, we extend the notion of flag matroids to flag matroids over any tract, provide cryptomorphic descriptions in terms of basis axioms (Grassmann-Plücker functions), circuit/vector axioms and dual pairs, including additional characterizations in the case of perfect tracts. We establish duality of flag matroids and construct minors. Based on the theory of ordered blue schemes, we introduce flag matroid bundles and construct their moduli space, which leads to algebro-geometric descriptions of duality and minors. Taking rational points recovers flag varieties in several geometric contexts: over (topological) fields, in tropical geometry, and as a generalization of the MacPhersonian.

A new class of bi-transversal matroids

Abstract:A transversal matroid whose dual is also transversal is called bi-transversal. Let $G$ be an undirected graph with vertex set $V$. In this paper, for every subset $W$ of $V$, we associate a bi-transversal matroid to the pair $(G,W)$. We also derive an explicit formula for counting bases of this matroid.

Abstract:In this sequel to "Foundations of matroids - Part 1", we establish several presentations of the foundation of a matroid in terms of small building blocks. For example, we show that the foundation of a matroid M is the colimit of the foundations of all embedded minors of M isomorphic to one of the matroids $U^2_4$, $U^2_5$, $U^3_5$, $C_5$, $C_5^\ast$, $U^2_4\oplus U^1_2$, $F_7$, $F_7^\ast$, and we show that this list is minimal. We establish similar minimal lists of building blocks for the classes of 2-connected and 3-connected matroids. We also establish a presentation for the foundation of a matroid in terms of its lattice of flats. Each of these presentations provides a useful method to compute the foundation of certain matroids, as we illustrate with a number of concrete examples. Combining these techniques with other results in the literature, we are able to compute the foundations of several interesting classes of matroids, including whirls, rank-2 uniform matroids, and projective geometries. In an appendix, we catalogue various 'small' pastures which occur as foundations of matroids, most of which were found with the assistance of a computer, and we discuss some of their interesting properties.

Abstract:A binary frame template is a device for creating binary matroids from graphic or cographic matroids. Such matroids are said to conform or coconform to the template. We introduce a preorder on these templates and determine the nontrivial templates that are minimal with respect to this order. As an application of our main result, we determine the eventual growth rates of certain minor-closed classes of binary matroids, including the class of binary matroids with no minor isomorphic to PG(3,2). Our main result applies to all highly-connected matroids in a class, not just those of maximum size. As a second application, we characterize the highly-connected 1-flowing matroids.

Abstract:A matroid base polytope is a polytope in which each vertex has 0,1 coordinates and each edge is parallel to a difference of two coordinate vectors. Matroid base polytopes are described combinatorially by integral submodular functions on a boolean lattice, satisfying the unit increase property. We define a more general class of unbounded matroids, or U-matroids, by replacing the boolean lattice with an arbitrary distributive lattice. U-matroids thus serve as a combinatorial model for polyhedra that satisfy the vertex and edge conditions of matroid base polytopes, but may be unbounded. Like polymatroids, U-matroids generalize matroids and arise as a special case of submodular systems. We prove that every U-matroid admits a canonical largest extension to a matroid, which we call the generous extension; the analogous geometric statement is that every U-matroid base polyhedron contains a unique largest matroid base polytope. We show that the supports of vertices of a U-matroid base polyhedron span a shellable simplicial complex, and we characterize U-matroid basis systems in terms of shelling orders, generalizing Björner's and Gale's criteria for a simplicial complex to be a matroid independence complex. Finally, we present an application of our theory to subspace arrangements and show that the generous extension has a natural geometric interpretation in this setting.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 2, Page 1472-1491, June 2024. Recently, it was proved by Bérczi and Schwarcz that the problem of factorizing a matroid into rainbow bases with respect to a given partition of its ground set is algorithmically intractable. On the other hand, many special cases were left open. We first show that the problem remains hard if the matroid is graphic, answering a question of Bérczi and Schwarcz. As another special case, we consider the problem of deciding whether a given digraph can be factorized into subgraphs which are spanning trees in the underlying sense and respect upper bounds on the indegree of every vertex. We prove that this problem is also hard. This answers a question of Frank. In the second part of the article, we deal with the relaxed problem of covering the ground set of a matroid by rainbow bases. Among other results, we show that there is a linear function [math] such that every matroid that can be factorized into [math] bases for some [math] can be covered by [math] rainbow bases if every partition class contains at most 2 elements.

Transversal matroids and the half plane property

Abstract:We focus on checking the validity of the half-plane property on two prominent classes of transversal matroids, namely lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids. We show that lattice path matroids satisfy the half-plane property. Subsequently, we show an explicit example of a bicircular matroid that is not a positroid and discuss the negative correlation properties of bases of transversal matroids. We prove that sparse paving matroids do not satisfy the Rayleigh property, which helps us gain new perspectives about conjectures on negative correlation in basis elements of matroids in general.

Minor-closed classes of binary functions

Abstract:Binary functions are a generalisation of the cocircuit spaces of binary matroids to arbitrary functions. Every rank function is assigned a binary function, and the deletion and contraction operations of binary functions generalise matroid deletion and contraction. We give the excluded minor characterisations for the classes of binary functions with well defined minors, and those with an associated rank function. Within these classes, we also characterise the classes of binary functions corresponding to polymatroids, matroids and binary matroids by their excluded minors. This gives a new proof of Tutte's excluded minor characterisation of binary matroids in the more generalised space of binary functions.

A binary-matroid analogue of a graph connectivity result of Jamison and Mulder

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph such that, whenever two vertices $x$ and $y$ of $G$ are joined by three internally disjoint paths, $x$ and $y$ are adjacent. Jamison and Mulder determined that the set of such graphs coincides with the set of graphs that can be built from cycles and complete graphs via 1-sums and parallel connections. This paper proves an analogous result for binary matroids.

A Note on Extension Properties and Representations of Matroids

Abstract:We discuss several extension properties of matroids and polymatroids and their application as necessary conditions for the existence of different matroid representations, namely linear, folded linear, algebraic, and entropic representations. Iterations of those extension properties are checked for matroids on eight and nine elements by means of computer-aided explorations, finding in that way several new examples of non-linearly representable matroids. A special emphasis is made on sparse paving matroids on nine points containing the tic-tac-toe configuration. We present a new, more clear description of that family and we analyze extension properties on those matroids and their duals.

Abstract:We show that, under suitable hypotheses, the foundation of a generalized parallel connection of matroids is the relative tensor product of the foundations. Using this result, we show that the foundation of a 2-sum of matroids is the absolute tensor product of the foundations, and that the foundation of a matroid is invariant under segment-cosegment exchange.

Abstract:Thin sums matroids were introduced to extend the notion of representability to non-finitary matroids. We give a new criterion for testing when the thin sums construction gives a matroid. We show that thin sums matroids over thin families are precisely the duals of representable matroids (those arising from vector spaces). We also show that the class of tame thin sums matroids is closed under duality and under taking minors, by giving a new characterisation of the matroids in this class. Finally, we show that all the matroids naturally associated to an infinite graph are tame thin sums matroids.
