Abstract:A transversal matroid whose dual is also transversal is called bi-transversal. Let $G$ be an undirected graph with vertex set $V$. In this paper, for every subset $W$ of $V$, we associate a bi-transversal matroid to the pair $(G,W)$. We also derive an explicit formula for counting bases of this matroid.

Abstract:We focus on checking the validity of the half-plane property on two prominent classes of transversal matroids, namely lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids. We show that lattice path matroids satisfy the half-plane property. Subsequently, we show an explicit example of a bicircular matroid that is not a positroid and discuss the negative correlation properties of bases of transversal matroids. We prove that sparse paving matroids do not satisfy the Rayleigh property, which helps us gain new perspectives about conjectures on negative correlation in basis elements of matroids in general.

An activities expansion of the transition polynomial of a multimatroid

Abstract:The weighted transition polynomial of a multimatroid is a generalization of the Tutte polynomial. By defining the activity of a skew class with respect to a basis in a multimatroid, we obtain an activities expansion for the weighted transition polynomial. We also decompose the set of all transversals of a multimatroid as a union of subsets of transversals. Each term in the decomposition has the structure of a boolean lattice, and each transversal belongs to a number of terms depending only on the sizes of some of its skew classes. Further expressions for the transition polynomial of a multimatroid are obtained via an equivalence relation on its bases and by extending Kochol's theory of compatible sets. We apply our multimatroid results to obtain a result of Morse about the transition polynomial of a delta-matroid and get a partition of the boolean lattice of subsets of elements of a delta-matroid determined by the feasible sets. Finally, we describe how multimatroids arise from graphs embedded in surfaces and apply our results to obtain an activities expansion for the topological transition polynomial. Our work extends results for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid.

Templates for Binary Matroids

Abstract:A binary frame template is a device for creating binary matroids from graphic or cographic matroids. Such matroids are said to conform or coconform to the template. We introduce a preorder on these templates and determine the nontrivial templates that are minimal with respect to this order. As an application of our main result, we determine the eventual growth rates of certain minor-closed classes of binary matroids, including the class of binary matroids with no minor isomorphic to PG(3,2). Our main result applies to all highly-connected matroids in a class, not just those of maximum size. As a second application, we characterize the highly-connected 1-flowing matroids.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph such that, whenever two vertices $x$ and $y$ of $G$ are joined by three internally disjoint paths, $x$ and $y$ are adjacent. Jamison and Mulder determined that the set of such graphs coincides with the set of graphs that can be built from cycles and complete graphs via 1-sums and parallel connections. This paper proves an analogous result for binary matroids.

Abstract:A matroid base polytope is a polytope in which each vertex has 0,1 coordinates and each edge is parallel to a difference of two coordinate vectors. Matroid base polytopes are described combinatorially by integral submodular functions on a boolean lattice, satisfying the unit increase property. We define a more general class of unbounded matroids, or U-matroids, by replacing the boolean lattice with an arbitrary distributive lattice. U-matroids thus serve as a combinatorial model for polyhedra that satisfy the vertex and edge conditions of matroid base polytopes, but may be unbounded. Like polymatroids, U-matroids generalize matroids and arise as a special case of submodular systems. We prove that every U-matroid admits a canonical largest extension to a matroid, which we call the generous extension; the analogous geometric statement is that every U-matroid base polyhedron contains a unique largest matroid base polytope. We show that the supports of vertices of a U-matroid base polyhedron span a shellable simplicial complex, and we characterize U-matroid basis systems in terms of shelling orders, generalizing Björner's and Gale's criteria for a simplicial complex to be a matroid independence complex. Finally, we present an application of our theory to subspace arrangements and show that the generous extension has a natural geometric interpretation in this setting.

Graph Curve Matroids

Abstract:We introduce a new class of matroids, called graph curve matroids. A graph curve matroid is associated to a graph and defined on the vertices of the graph as a ground set. We prove that these matroids provide a combinatorial description of hyperplane sections of degenerate canonical curves in algebraic geometry. Our focus lies on graphs that are 2-connected and trivalent, which define identically self-dual graph curve matroids, but we also develop generalizations. Finally, we provide an algorithm to compute the graph curve matroid associated to a given graph, as well as an implementation and data of examples that can be used in Macaulay2.

We deduce a polynomial time algorithm for deciding if a given matroid (respectively, arbitrary structure) is an uniform matroid. This problem is intractable if we use an independence or an equivalent oracle.

Abstract:We study the connection between multimatroids and moduli spaces of rational curves with cyclic action. Multimatroids are generalizations of matroids and delta-matroids introduced by Bouchet, which naturally arise in topological graph theory. The vantage point of moduli of curves provides a tropical framework for studying multimatroids, generalizing the previous connection between type-A permutohedral varieties (Losev--Manin moduli spaces) and matroids, and the connection between type-B permutohedral varieties (Batyrev--Blume moduli spaces) and delta-matroids. Specifically, we equate a combinatorial nef cone of the moduli space with the space of $\mathbb{R}$-multimatroids, a slight generalization of multimatroids, and we introduce the independence polytopal complex of a multimatroid, whose volume is identified with an intersection number on the moduli space. As an application, for the generating set of the Chow ring of the moduli space consisting of all psi-classes and their pullbacks along certain forgetful maps, we give a combinatorial formula for their intersection numbers by relating to the volumes of independence polytopal complexes of multimatroids.

Abstract:In this paper, we study positroids and its overlap with two classes of matroids: transversal and paving matroids. We exhibit a new class of fundamental transversal matroids and classify the Le-diagram for rank two transversal positroids. We also establish a combinatorial description for paving positroids in terms of Le-diagrams.

Reconfiguration of basis pairs in regular matroids

Abstract:In recent years, combinatorial reconfiguration problems have attracted great attention due to their connection to various topics such as optimization, counting, enumeration, or sampling. One of the most intriguing open questions concerns the exchange distance of two matroid basis sequences, a problem that appears in several areas of computer science and mathematics. In 1980, White proposed a conjecture for the characterization of two basis sequences being reachable from each other by symmetric exchanges, which received a significant interest also in algebra due to its connection to toric ideals and Gröbner bases. In this work, we verify White's conjecture for basis sequences of length two in regular matroids, a problem that was formulated as a separate question by Farber, Richter, and Shan and Andres, Hochstättler, and Merkel. Most of previous work on White's conjecture has not considered the question from an algorithmic perspective. We study the problem from an optimization point of view: our proof implies a polynomial algorithm for determining a sequence of symmetric exchanges that transforms a basis pair into another, thus providing the first polynomial upper bound on the exchange distance of basis pairs in regular matroids. As a byproduct, we verify a conjecture of Gabow from 1976 on the serial symmetric exchange property of matroids for the regular case.

A Regular Unimodular Triangulation of the Matroid Base Polytope

Abstract:We produce the first regular unimodular triangulation of an arbitrary matroid base polytope. We then extend our triangulation to integral generalized permutahedra. Prior to this work it was unknown whether each matroid base polytope admitted a unimodular cover.

Abstract:Lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids are two well-known classes of transversal matroids. In the seminal work of Bonin and de Mier about structural properties of lattice path matroids, the authors claimed that lattice path matroids significantly differ from bicircular matroids. Recently, it was proved that all cosimple lattice path matroids have positive double circuits, while it was shown that there is a large class of cosimple bicircular matroids with no positive double circuits. These observations support Bonin and de Miers' claim. Finally, Sivaraman and Slilaty suggested studying the intersection of lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids as a possibly interesting research topic. In this work, we exhibit the excluded bicircular matroids for the class of lattice path matroids, and we propose a characterization of the graph family whose bicircular matroids are lattice path matroids. As an application of this characterization, we propose a geometric description of 2-connected lattice path bicircular matroids.

Abstract:Thin sums matroids were introduced to extend the notion of representability to non-finitary matroids. We give a new criterion for testing when the thin sums construction gives a matroid. We show that thin sums matroids over thin families are precisely the duals of representable matroids (those arising from vector spaces). We also show that the class of tame thin sums matroids is closed under duality and under taking minors, by giving a new characterisation of the matroids in this class. Finally, we show that all the matroids naturally associated to an infinite graph are tame thin sums matroids.

Matroidal Mixed Eulerian Numbers

Abstract:We make a systematic study of matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers which are certain intersection numbers in the matroid Chow ring generalizing the mixed Eulerian numbers introduced by Postnikov. These numbers are shown to be valuative and obey a log-concavity relation. We establish recursion formulas and use them to relate matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers to the characteristic and Tutte polynomials, reproving results of Huh-Katz and Berget-Spink-Tseng. Generalizing Postnikov, we show that these numbers are equal to certain weighted counts of binary trees. Lastly, we study these numbers for perfect matroid designs, proving that they generalize the remixed Eulerian numbers of Nadeau-Tewari.

Classes of binary matroids with small lists of excluded induced minors

Abstract:In earlier work, we characterized the class of matroids with no $M(C_4)$ as an induced minor and the class of matroids with no member of $\{M(C_4),M(K_4)\}$ as an induced minor. In this paper, for every two matroids in $\{M(C_4),M(K_4\backslash e),M(K_4),F_7\}$, we determine the class of matroids that have neither of the chosen pair as an induced minor. Additionally, we prove structural lemmas toward characterizing the class of matroids that do not contain $M(K_4)$ as an induced minor.

Abstract:Delta-matroids are "type B" generalizations of matroids in the same way that maximal orthogonal Grassmannians are generalizations of Grassmannians. A delta-matroid analogue of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid is the interlace polynomial. We give a geometric interpretation for the interlace polynomial via the K-theory of maximal orthogonal Grassmannians. To do so, we develop a new Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch-type formula for the type B permutohedral variety.

Abstract:A transduction provides us with a way of using the monadic second-order language of a structure to make statements about a derived structure. Any transduction induces a relation on the set of these structures. This article presents a self-contained presentation of the theory of transductions for the monadic second-order language of matroids. This includes a proof of the matroid version of the Backwards Translation Theorem, which lifts any formula applied to the images of the transduction into a formula which we can apply to the pre-images. Applications include proofs that the class of lattice-path matroids and the class of spike-minors can be defined by sentences in monadic second-order logic.

Connectivity gaps among matroids with the same enumerative invariants

Abstract:Many important enumerative invariants of a matroid can be obtained from its Tutte polynomial, and many more are determined by two stronger invariants, the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant and the configuration of the matroid. We show that the same is not true of the most basic connectivity invariants. Specifically, we show that for any positive integer $n$, there are pairs of matroids that have the same configuration (and so the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant and the same Tutte polynomial) but the difference between their Tutte connectivities exceeds $n$, and likewise for vertical connectivity and branch-width. The examples that we use to show this, which we construct using an operation that we introduce, are transversal matroids that are also positroids.
