Abstract:In this paper, we study positroids and its overlap with two classes of matroids: transversal and paving matroids. We exhibit a new class of fundamental transversal matroids and classify the Le-diagram for rank two transversal positroids. We also establish a combinatorial description for paving positroids in terms of Le-diagrams.

Abstract:Positroids are matroids realizable by real matrices with all nonnegative maximal minors. They partition the ordered matroids into equivalence classes, called positroid envelope classes, by their Grassmann necklaces. We give an explicit graph construction that shows that every positroid envelope class contains a graphic matroid. We show that the following classes of positroids are equivalent: graphic, binary, and regular, and that a graphic positroid is the unique matroid in its positroid envelope class. Finally, we show that every graphic positroid has an oriented graph representable by a signed incidence matrix with all nonnegative minors.

Abstract:We prove that every paving matroid that is an excluded minor of interval positroids can be reduced to one of three fundamental families of excluded minors of interval positroids by relaxing dependent hyperplanes. Using this result, we classify all non-positroid excluded minors of interval positroids that are paving matroids. Additionally, we provide a criterion that characterizes all excluded minors of interval positroids that are paving positroids.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a complete characterization of rank $k-1$ positroids that are quotients of the uniform matroid $U_{k,n}$, completing a partial result by Bendetti-Chavez-Jiménez. Furthermore, we show that any pair of concordant positroids with adjacent ranks are related by a cyclic shift on their decorated permutations. We also use the concept of conecklaces to give a full characterization of concordant lattice path matroids (LPMs).

Combinatorics of Essential Sets for Positroids

Abstract:Positroids are a family of matroids introduced by Postnikov in the study of non-negative Grassmannians. Postnikov identified several combinatorial objects in bijections with positroids, among which are bounded affine permutations. On the other hand, the notion of essential sets, introduced for permutations by Fulton, was used by Knutson in the study of the special family of interval rank positroids. We generalize Fulton's essential sets to bounded affine permutations. The bijection of the latter with positroids, allows study of the relationship between them. From the point of view of positroids, essential sets are maximally dependent cyclic interval. We define connected essential sets and prove that they give a facet description of the positroid polytope, as well as equations defining the positroid variety. We define a subset of essential sets, called core, which contains minimal rank conditions to uniquely recover a positroid. We provide an algorithm to retrieve the positroid satisfying the rank conditions in the core or any compatible rank condition on cyclic intervals.

Abstract:We characterize the quotients among lattice path matroids (LPMs) in terms of their diagrams. This characterization allows us to show that ordering LPMs by quotients yields a graded poset, whose rank polynomial has the Narayana numbers as coefficients. Furthermore, we study full lattice path flag matroids and show that—contrary to arbitrary positroid flag matroids—they correspond to points in the nonnegative flag variety. At the basis of this result lies an identification of certain intervals of the strong Bruhat order with lattice path flag matroids. A recent conjecture of Mcalmon, Oh, and Xiang states a characterization of quotients of positroids. We use our results to prove this conjecture in the case of LPMs.

Paving Matroids: Defining Equations and Associated Varieties

Abstract:We study paving matroids, their realization spaces, and their closures, along with matroid varieties and circuit varieties. Within this context, we introduce three distinct methods for generating polynomials within the associated ideals of these varieties across any dimension. Additionally, we explain the relationship between polynomials constructed using these different methods. We then compute a comprehensive and finite set of defining equations for matroid varieties associated with specific classes of paving matroids. Finally, we focus on the class of paving matroids of rank $3$, known as point-line configurations, which essentially contain simple matroids of rank $3$. Furthermore, we provide a decomposition for the associated circuit variety of point-line configurations, where all points have a degree less than $3$. Lastly, we present several examples applying our results and compare them with the known cases in the literature.

Ternary and quaternary positroids

Abstract:A positroid is an ordered matroid realizable by a real matrix with all nonnegative maximal minors. Postnikov gave a map from ordered matroids to Grassmann necklaces, for which there is a unique positroid in each fiber of the map. Here, we give forbidden minor characterizations of ternary and quaternary positroids. We show that a positroid is ternary if and only if it is near-regular, and that all ternary positroids are formed by direct sums and $2$-sums of binary positroids and positroid ordered whirls. We prove that a positroid is quaternary if and only if it is $U^2_6, U^4_6,$ and $P_6$-free. Under the map from ordered matroids to Grassmann necklaces, we fully characterize the fibers of ternary positroids, referred to as their positroid envelope classes; in particular, the envelope class of a positroid ordered whirl of rank-$r$ contains exactly four matroids.

We prove that positroids, a class of matroid introduced by Postnikov which have seen many recent applications in both math and physics, have the Rayleigh property.

Ehrhart Positivity of Panhandle Matroids and the Ehrhart-Coefficient Upper-Bound Conjecture for Paving Matroids

Abstract:Panhandle matroids are a specific lattice-path matroid corresponding to panhandle-shaped Ferrers diagrams. Their matroid polytopes are the subpolytopes carved from a hypersimplex to form matroid polytopes of paving matroids. It has been an active area of research to determine which families of matroid polytopes are Ehrhart positive. We prove Ehrhart positivity for panhandle matroid polytopes, thus confirming a conjecture of Hanely, Martin, McGinnis, Miyata, Nasr, Vindas-Meléndez, and Yin (2023). Another standing conjecture posed by Ferroni (2022) asserts that the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial of a connected matroid are bounded above by those of the corresponding uniform matroid. We prove Ferroni's conjecture for paving matroids -- a class conjectured to asymptotically contain all matroids. Our proofs rely solely on combinatorial techniques which involve determining intricate interpretations of certain set partitions.

Transversal matroids and the half plane property

Abstract:We focus on checking the validity of the half-plane property on two prominent classes of transversal matroids, namely lattice path matroids and bicircular matroids. We show that lattice path matroids satisfy the half-plane property. Subsequently, we show an explicit example of a bicircular matroid that is not a positroid and discuss the negative correlation properties of bases of transversal matroids. We prove that sparse paving matroids do not satisfy the Rayleigh property, which helps us gain new perspectives about conjectures on negative correlation in basis elements of matroids in general.

Abstract:Our work is motivated by the connection established between Lorentzian polynomials and the Dressian in the seminal work of Brändén and Huh on Lorentzian polynomials. We analyze this relation for the class of positroids, and are able to show that in this case, we can relate a multiaffine homogenous stable polynomial to it. Additionally, we also highlight that a conjecture for matroids posed by Brändén and Huh is true when considered over the class of Rayleigh matroids which strictly contain the class of positroids. We collect these findings along with other results for further exploration.

Abstract:We show that every positroid of rank $r \geq 3$ has a good coline. Using the definition of the chromatic number of oriented matroid introduced by J.\ Nešetřil, R.\ Nickel, and W.~Hochstättler, this shows that every orientation of a positroid is 3-colorable.

An activities expansion of the transition polynomial of a multimatroid

Abstract:The weighted transition polynomial of a multimatroid is a generalization of the Tutte polynomial. By defining the activity of a skew class with respect to a basis in a multimatroid, we obtain an activities expansion for the weighted transition polynomial. We also decompose the set of all transversals of a multimatroid as a union of subsets of transversals. Each term in the decomposition has the structure of a boolean lattice, and each transversal belongs to a number of terms depending only on the sizes of some of its skew classes. Further expressions for the transition polynomial of a multimatroid are obtained via an equivalence relation on its bases and by extending Kochol's theory of compatible sets. We apply our multimatroid results to obtain a result of Morse about the transition polynomial of a delta-matroid and get a partition of the boolean lattice of subsets of elements of a delta-matroid determined by the feasible sets. Finally, we describe how multimatroids arise from graphs embedded in surfaces and apply our results to obtain an activities expansion for the topological transition polynomial. Our work extends results for the Tutte polynomial of a matroid.

A characterization of positroids, with applications to amalgams and excluded minors

Abstract:A matroid of rank $r$ on $n$ elements is a positroid if it has a representation by an $r$ by $n$ matrix over $\mathbb{R}$, each $r$ by $r$ submatrix of which has nonnegative determinant. Earlier characterizations of connected positroids and results about direct sums of positroids involve connected flats and non-crossing partitions. We prove another characterization of positroids of a similar flavor and give some applications of the characterization. We show that if $M$ and $N$ are positroids and $E(M)\cap E(N)$ is an independent set and a set of clones in both $M$ and $N$, then the free amalgam of $M$ and $N$ is a positroid, and we prove a second result of that type. Also, we identify several multi-parameter infinite families of excluded minors for the class of positroids.

Smooth Points on Positroid Varieties

Abstract:In the Grassmannian $Gr_{\mathbb{C}}(k,n)$ we have positroid varieties $\Pi_f$, each indexed by a bounded affine permutation $f$ and containing torus-fixed points $\lambda \in \Pi_f$. In this paper we consider the partially ordered set consisting of quadruples $(k,n,\Pi_f,\lambda)$ (or \textit{(positroid) pairs} $(\Pi_f,\lambda)$ for short). The partial order is the ordering given by the covering relation $\lessdot$ where $(\Pi_f',\lambda') \lessdot (\Pi_f,\lambda)$ if $\Pi_f'$ is obtained by $\Pi_f$ by \textit{deletion} or \textit{contraction.} Using the results of Snider [2010], we know that positroid varieties can be studied in a neighborhood of each of these points by \textit{affine pipe dreams.} Our main theorem provides a quick test of when a positroid variety is smooth at one of these given points. It is sufficient to test smoothness of a positroid variety by using the main result to test smoothness at each of these points. These results can also be applied to the question of whether Schubert varieties in flag manifolds are smooth at points given by 321-avoiding permutations, as studied in Graham/Kreimer [2020]. We have a secondary result, which describes the minimal singular positroid pairs in our ordering - these are the positroid pairs where any deletion or contraction causes it to become smooth.

Abstract:We initiate the study of a class of polytopes, which we coin polypositroids, defined to be those polytopes that are simultaneously generalized permutohedra (or polymatroids) and alcoved polytopes. Whereas positroids are the matroids arising from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian, polypositroids are "positive" polymatroids. We parametrize polypositroids using Coxeter necklaces and balanced graphs, and describe the cone of polypositroids by extremal rays and facet inequalities. We introduce a notion of -polypositroid for a finite Weyl group W and a choice of Coxeter element c. We connect the theory of -polypositroids to cluster algebras of finite type and to generalized associahedra. We discuss membranes, which are certain triangulated 2-dimensional surfaces inside polypositroids. Membranes extend the notion of plabic graphs from positroids to polypositroids.

Abstract:Covering-based rough set theory is a useful tool to deal with inexact, uncertain, or vague knowledge in information systems. Geometric lattice has been widely used in diverse fields, especially search algorithm design, which plays an important role in covering reductions. In this paper, we construct three geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets through matroids and study the relationship among them. First, a geometric lattice structure of covering-based rough sets is established through the transversal matroid induced by a covering. Then its characteristics, such as atoms, modular elements, and modular pairs, are studied. We also construct a one-to-one correspondence between this type of geometric lattices and transversal matroids in the context of covering-based rough sets. Second, we present three sufficient and necessary conditions for two types of covering upper approximation operators to be closure operators of matroids. We also represent two types of matroids through closure axioms and then obtain two geometric lattice structures of covering-based rough sets. Third, we study the relationship among these three geometric lattice structures. Some core concepts such as reducible elements in covering-based rough sets are investigated with geometric lattices. In a word, this work points out an interesting view, namely, geometric lattice, to study covering-based rough sets.

Abstract:Poset games are a class of combinatorial game that remain unsolved. Soltys and Wilson proved that computing wining strategies is in \textbf{PSPACE} and aside from special cases such as Nim and N-Free games, \textbf{P} time algorithms for finding ideal play are unknown. This paper presents methods calculate the nimber of posets games allowing for the classification of winning or losing positions. The results present an equivalence of ideal strategies on posets that are seemingly unrelated.

Cyclic Orderings of Paving Matroids

Abstract:A matroid M is cyclically orderable if there is a cyclic permutation of the elements of M such that any r consecutive elements form a basis in M. An old conjecture of Kajitani, Miyano, and Ueno states that a matroid M is cyclically orderable if and only if for all nonempty subsets X in E(M), |X|/r(M) is less than or equal to |E(M)|/r(M). In this paper, we verify this conjecture for all paving matroids.

Abstract:For a matroid of rank $r$ and a non-negative integer $k$, an element is called $k$-loose if all circuits containing it have size greater than $r-k$. Zaslavsky and the author previously characterized all binary matroids with a $1$-loose element. In this paper, we establish a linear bound on the size of a binary matroid, in terms of its rank, that contains a $k$-loose element. A matroid is $k$-paving if all its elements are $k$-loose. Rajpal showed that for a prime power $q$, the rank of a $GF(q)$ matroid that is $k$-paving is bounded. We provide a bound on the rank of $GF(q)$-matroids that are cosimple and have two $k$-loose elements. Consequently, we deduce a bound on the rank of $GF(q)$ matroids that are $k$-paving. Additionally, we provide a bound on the size of binary matroids that are $k$-paving.
