Abstract:We discuss several extension properties of matroids and polymatroids and their application as necessary conditions for the existence of different matroid representations, namely linear, folded linear, algebraic, and entropic representations. Iterations of those extension properties are checked for matroids on eight and nine elements by means of computer-aided explorations, finding in that way several new examples of non-linearly representable matroids. A special emphasis is made on sparse paving matroids on nine points containing the tic-tac-toe configuration. We present a new, more clear description of that family and we analyze extension properties on those matroids and their duals.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve lies in exploring the extension properties of matroids and polymatroids and regarding them as the necessary conditions for the existence of different representation methods, specifically including linear, folded - linear, algebraic and entropy representations. Through computer - aided exploration, the author examined the iterative extension properties of matroids with 8 and 9 elements and discovered new instances of matroids that are not linearly representable. ### Main Problems and Goals 1. **Extension Properties and Their Applications** - The paper discusses several extension properties of matroids and polymatroids and studies these properties as the necessary conditions for the existence of different representation methods. - For example, the generalized Euclidean intersection property, the common information property, the Ingleton - Main lemma, etc. 2. **Newly Discovered Matroids That Are Not Linearly Representable** - Through computer - aided exploration, the author carried out an iterative check of the extension properties on matroids with 8 and 9 elements and found several new instances of matroids that are not linearly representable. - Special emphasis is placed on sparse paving matroids containing the "tic - tac - toe configuration". 3. **Combination of Theory and Computational Tools** - The author provides a unified perspective, combining the extension properties in previous studies (such as Euclidean, generalized Euclidean, Levi intersection property and Ingleton - Main property) with the properties in information theory (such as common information and Ahlswede - Körner property). - This combination enables them to classify representable matroids using theoretical results and computer - aided tools. 4. **Analysis of Specific Matroids** - For sparse paving matroids containing the "tic - tac - toe configuration", the author provides a clearer description and analyzes the extension properties of these matroids and their duals. - It is proved that the dual of the "tic - tac - toe" matroid does not satisfy the Ahlswede - Körner property and is therefore not almost entropy. ### Formula Representation To ensure the correctness and readability of the formulas, the following are some of the key formulas involved in the paper: - **Definition of Common Information** \[ f(X;Y|Z) = f(XZ) + f(YZ) - f(XYZ) - f(Z) \] where \( f \) is a set function and \( X, Y, Z\subseteq E \). - **Generalized Euclidean Extension** \[ g(z|F_1) = g(z|F_2) = 0\quad\text{and}\quad g(F_1z\cap F_2z) = f(F_1\cap F_2)+ 1 \] - **Ahlswede - Körner Extension** \[ g(Z|X) = 0\quad\text{and}\quad g(X'|Z) = g(X'|Y)\quad\forall X'\subseteq X \] ### Summary The main contribution of the paper is that through computer - aided exploration, new instances of matroids that are not linearly representable are discovered, and by combining theoretical results and computational tools, new insights are provided for the representation problem of matroids. In particular, the research on sparse paving matroids containing the "tic - tac - toe configuration" further deepens our understanding of the extension properties of matroids.
