Abstract:We demonstrate the role of the mass asymmetry on the balance energy (Ebal) by studying asymmetric reactions throughout the periodic table and over entire colliding geometry. Our results, which are almost independent of the system size and as well as of the colliding geometries indicate a sizeable effect of the asymmetry of the reaction on the balance energy.

Abstract:A summary of recent researches on nuclear dynamics with realistic microscopic quantum approaches is presented. The Balian-Vénéroni variational principle is used to derive the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) equation describing the dynamics at the mean-field level, as well as an extension including small-amplitude quantum fluctuations which is equivalent to the time-dependent random-phase approximation (TDRPA). Such formalisms as well as their practical implementation in the nuclear physics framework with modern three-dimensional codes are discussed. Recent applications to nuclear dynamics, from collective vibrations to heavy-ion collisions are presented. A particular attention is devoted to the interplay between collective motions and internal degrees of freedom. For instance, the harmonic nature of collective vibrations is questioned. Nuclei are also known to exhibit superfluidity due to pairing residual interaction. Extensions of the theoretical approach to study such pairing vibrations are now available. Large amplitude collective motions are investigated in the framework of heavy-ion collisions leading, for instance, to the formation of a compound system. How fusion is affected by the internal structure of the collision partners, such as their deformation, is discussed. Other mechanisms in competition with fusion, and responsible for the formation of fragments which differ from the entrance channel (transfer reactions, deep-inelastic collisions, and quasi-fission) are investigated. Finally, studies of actinide collisions forming, during very short times of few zeptoseconds, the heaviest nuclear systems available on Earth, are presented.

Abstract:Violent nuclear collisions are open systems which require a non-equilibrium description when the process should be followed from the first instants. The heated system produced in the collision, can no more be treated within an independent-particle picture and additional correlations should be taken into account: they rely to in-medium dissipation and phase-space fluctuations. Their interplay with the one-body collective behaviour activates the transport dynamics: large-amplitude fluctuations and bifurcations in a variety of mechanisms appear, from fusion to neck formation till eventually freezing out the system into several intermediate-mass clusters. Starting from fundamental concepts tested on nuclear matter, a microscopic description is built up to address violent processes occurring in heavy-ion collisions at Fermi energies and in spallation reactions, and it is applied to experimental observables.

High-energy Behavior of the Nuclear Symmetry Potential in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

Abstract:Using the relativistic impulse approximation with empirical NN scattering amplitude and the nuclear scalar and vector densities from the relativistic mean-field theory, we evaluate the Dirac optical potential for neutrons and protons in asymmetric nuclear matter. From the resulting Schrodinger-equivalent potential, the high-energy behavior of the nuclear symmetry potential is studied. We find that the symmetry potential at fixed baryon density is essentially constant once the nucleon kinetic energy is greater than about 500 MeV. Moreover, for such a high-energy nucleon, the symmetry potential is slightly negative below a baryon density of about rho = 0.22 fm(-3) and then increases almost linearly to positive values at high densities. Our results thus provide an important constraint on the energy and density dependence of nuclear symmetry potential in asymmetric nuclear matter.

Abstract:Recent microscopic studies, based on the theoretical framework of nuclear energy density functionals, have analyzed dynamic (least action) and static (minimum energy) fission paths, and it has been shown that in addition to the important role played by nonaxial and/or octupole collective degrees of freedom, fission paths crucially depend on the approximations adopted in calculating the collective inertia. The dynamics of spontaneous fission of $^{264}$Fm and $^{250}$Fm is explored. The fission paths, action integrals and the corresponding half-lives predicted by the functionals PC-PK1 and DD-PC1 are compared and, in the case of $^{264}$Fm, discussed in relation with recent results obtained using the HFB model based on the Skyrme functional SkM$^*$ and a density dependent mixed pairing interaction. Deformation energy surfaces, collective potentials, and perturbative and nonperturbative cranking collective inertia tensors are calculated using the multidimensionally-constrained relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (MDC-RHB) model, with the energy density functionals PC-PK1 and DD-PC1. Pairing correlations are treated in the Bogoliubov approximation using a separable pairing force of finite range. The least-action principle is employed to determine dynamic spontaneous fission paths.

Abstract:Significant progress has been made in recent years in constraining nuclear symmetry energy at and below the saturation density of nuclear matter using data from both terrestrial nuclear experiments and astrophysical observations. However, many interesting questions remain to be studied especially at supra-saturation densities. In this lecture note, after a brief summary of the currently available constraints on nuclear symmetry energy near the saturation density we first discuss the relationship between the symmetry energy and the isopin and momentum dependence of the single-nucleon potential in isospin-asymmetric nuclear medium. We then discuss several open issues regarding effects of the tensor force induced neutron-proton short-range correlation (SRC) on nuclear symmetry energy. Finally, as an example of the impacts of nuclear symmetry energy on properties of neutron stars and gravitational waves, we illustrate effects of the high-density symmetry energy on the tidal polarizability of neutron stars in coalescing binaries.
Multiscale physics of atomic nuclei from first principles

Abstract:Atomic nuclei exhibit multiple energy scales ranging from hundreds of MeV in binding energies to fractions of an MeV for low-lying collective excitations. As the limits of nuclear binding is approached near the neutron- and proton driplines, traditional shell-structure starts to melt with an onset of deformation and an emergence of coexisting shapes. It is a long-standing challenge to describe this multiscale physics starting from nuclear forces with roots in quantum chromodynamics. Here we achieve this within a unified and non-perturbative framework that captures both short- and long-range correlations starting from modern nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory. The short-range correlations which accounts for the bulk of the binding energy is included within a symmetry-breaking framework, while long-range correlations (and fine details about the collective structure) are included via symmetry projection. Our calculations accurately reproduce available experimental data for low-lying collective states and the electromagnetic quadrupole transitions in $^{20-30}$Ne. We also reveal coexisting spherical and deformed shapes in $^{30}$Ne, which indicates the breakdown of the magic neutron number $N=20$ as the key nucleus $^{28}$O is approached, and we predict that the dripline nuclei $^{32,34}$Ne are strongly deformed. By developing reduced-order-models for symmetry-projected states, we perform a global sensitivity analysis and find that the subleading singlet S-wave contact and a pion-nucleon coupling strongly impact nuclear deformation in chiral effective-field-theory. The techniques developed in this work clarify how microscopic nuclear forces generate the multiscale physics of nuclei spanning collective phenomena as well as short-range correlations and allow to capture emergent and dynamical phenomena in finite fermion systems.

Role of colliding geometry on the N/Z dependence of balance energy

Abstract:We study the role of colliding geometry on the N/Z dependence of balance energy using isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model. Our study reveals that the N/Z dependence of balance energy becomes much steeper for peripheral collisions as compared to the central collisions. We also study the effect of system mass on the impact parameter dependence of N/Z dependence of balance energy. The study shows that lighter systems shows greater sensitivity to colliding geometry towards the N/Z dependence.

Abstract:The ratio of pre-equilibrium neutrons to protons from collisions of neutron-rich nuclei is studied as a function of their kinetic energies. This ratio is found to be sensitive to the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, but is independent of the compressibility of symmetric nuclear matter and the in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections. The experimental measurement of this ratio thus provides a novel means for determining the nuclear equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter.

Abstract:Low-energy positive and negative parity collective states in the equilibrium minimum, and the dynamics of induced fission of actinide nuclei are investigated in a unified theoretical framework based on the generator coordinate method (GCM) with the Gaussian overlap approximation (GOA). The collective potential and inertia tensor, both at zero and finite temperature, are computed using the self-consistent multidimensionally constrained relativistic mean field (MDC-RMF) model, based on the energy density functional DD-PC1. Pairing correlations are treated in the BCS approximation with a separable pairing force of finite range. A collective quadrupole-octupole Hamiltonian characterized by zero-temperature axially-symmetric deformation energy surface and perturbative cranking inertia tensor, is used to model the low-lying excitation spectrum. The fission fragment charge distributions are obtained by propagating the initial collective states in time with the time-dependent GCM+GOA that uses the same quadrupole-octupole Hamiltonian, but with the collective potential and inertia tensor computed at finite temperature. The illustrative charge yields of $^{228}$Th, $^{234}$U, $^{240}$Pu, $^{244}$Cm, and $^{250}$Cf are in very good agreement with experiment, and the predicted mass asymmetry is consistent with the result of a recent microscopic study that has attributed the distribution (peak) of the heavier-fragment nuclei to shell-stabilized octupole deformations.

Abstract:Using the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model, the balance energies of free neutrons, free protons and Z=1 particles (including free protons, deuterons and tritons) from mass symmetric heavy-ion collisions with isotopes, isobars and isotones are studied. The influence of nuclear symmetry potential energy on the balance energy is emphasized. It is found that the balance energy of free neutrons is sensitive to the nuclear symmetry energy, while that of free protons is not. Particularly, the initial neutron/proton ratio dependence of the balance energy of free neutrons from Sn isotopes can be taken as a useful probe to constrain the stiffness of the nuclear symmetry energy.

Abstract:Nuclear saturation and the symmetry energy are key properties of low-energy nuclear physics that depend on fine details of the nuclear interaction. The equation of state around saturation is also an important anchor for extrapolations to higher densities and studies of neutron stars. Here we develop a unified statistical framework that uses realistic nuclear forces to link the theoretical modeling of finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter. We construct fast and accurate emulators for nuclear-matter observables and employ an iterative history-matching approach to explore and reduce the enormous parameter domain of Δ -full chiral interactions. Abstract:In this review, we summarize recent studies on nuclear matter and finite nuclei based on parity doublet models. We first construct a parity doublet model (PDM), which includes the chiral invariant mass m0 of nucleons together with the mass generated by the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. We then study the density dependence of the symmetry energy in the PDM, which shows that the symmetry energy is larger for smaller chiral inavariant mass. Then, we investigate some finite nuclei by applying the Relativistic Continuum Hartree–Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory to the PDM. We present the root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) of the binding energies and charge radii, and show that m0=700 MeV is preferred by the nuclear properties. Finally, we modify the PDM by adding the isovector scalar meson a0(980), and show that the inclusion of the a0(980) enlarges the symmetry energy of the infinite nuclear matter.

Abstract:The dependence of fusion dynamics on neutron excess for light nuclei is extracted. This is accomplished by comparing the average fusion cross-section at energies just above the fusion barrier for $^{12-15}$C + $^{12}$C with measurements of the interaction cross-section from high evergy collisions. The experimental results indicate that the fusion cross-section associated with dynamics increases with increasing neutron excess. Calculations with a time-dependent Hartree-Fock model fail to describe the observed trend.

Abstract:Recent works on the relativistic description of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter at extreme conditions are reviewed. New effective interactions, PK1, PK1r and PKDD in the relativistic mean field( RMF) theory, are proposed with the center-of-mass correction included in a microscopic way. They are able to provide an excellent description not only for the properties of nuclear matter and neutron stars, but also for the nuclei near or far from the beta-stability line, including halos and giant halos at the neutron drip line in nuclei and hyper-nuclei. Based on the solution of the RMF equations, good spin symmetry is found in anti-nucleon spectra.

Abstract:The collective motion of a finite nuclear system is investigated by numerical simulation and by linear response theory. Using a pseudo-particle simulation technique we analyze the giant resonances with a multipole decomposition scheme. We examine the energy and the damping of different giant collective modes and obtain the dependence of these quantities on the proton-neutron ratio. ...(abbreviated) Alternatively the giant collective modes in asymmetric nuclear matter are investigated within linear response theory including the collisional correlations via a dynamic relaxation time approximation. For a multicomponent system we derive a coupled dispersion relation and show that two sources of coupling appear: (i) a coupling of isoscalar and isovector modes due to the action of different mean-fields and (ii) an explicit new coupling in asymmetric matter due to collisional interaction. We show that the latter is responsible for a new mode arising besides isovector and isoscalar modes...(abbreviated) Collective motion beyond the linear regime is demonstrated for the example of large-amplitude isoscalar giant octupole excitations in finite nuclear systems. Depending on the initial conditions we observe either clear octupole modes or over-damped octupole modes which decay immediately into quadrupole ones. This dependence on initial correlations represents a behaviour beyond linear response.
