Abstract:Significant progress has been made in recent years in constraining the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy using terrestrial nuclear laboratory data. Around and below the nuclear matter saturation density, the experimental constraints start to merge in a relatively narrow region. At supra-saturation densities, there are, however, still large uncertainties. After summarizing the latest experimental constraints on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy, we highlight a few recent studies examining imprints of nuclear symmetry energy on the binding energy, energy release during hadron-quark phase transitions as well as the w-mode frequency and damping time of gravitational wave emission of neutron stars.

Abstract:The symmetry energy coefficients for nuclei with mass number A=20~250 are extracted from more than 2000 measured nuclear masses. With the semi-empirical connection between the symmetry energy coefficients of finite nuclei and the nuclear symmetry energy at reference densities, we investigate the density dependence of symmetry energy of nuclear matter at subnormal densities. The obtained results are compared with those extracted from other methods.

Abstract:The neutron-proton Fermi-energy difference and the correlation to nucleon separation energies for some magic nuclei are investigated with the Skyrme energy density functionals and nuclear masses, with which the nuclear symmetry energy at sub-saturation densities is constrained from 54 Skyrme parameter sets. The extracted nuclear symmetry energy at sub-saturation density of 0.11 fm$^{-3}$ is 26.2 $\pm$ 1.0 MeV with 1.5 $\sigma$ uncertainty. By further combining the neutron-skin thickness of 208Pb, ten Skyrme forces with slope parameter of 28<L<65 are selected for the description of the symmetry energy around saturation densities.

Abstract:Significant progress has been made in recent years in constraining nuclear symmetry energy at and below the saturation density of nuclear matter using data from both terrestrial nuclear experiments and astrophysical observations. However, many interesting questions remain to be studied especially at supra-saturation densities. In this lecture note, after a brief summary of the currently available constraints on nuclear symmetry energy near the saturation density we first discuss the relationship between the symmetry energy and the isopin and momentum dependence of the single-nucleon potential in isospin-asymmetric nuclear medium. We then discuss several open issues regarding effects of the tensor force induced neutron-proton short-range correlation (SRC) on nuclear symmetry energy. Finally, as an example of the impacts of nuclear symmetry energy on properties of neutron stars and gravitational waves, we illustrate effects of the high-density symmetry energy on the tidal polarizability of neutron stars in coalescing binaries.

Abstract:The isovector term of the real part of the nucleon optical potential is obtained by analysing differential cross section data of (p,n) charge exchange reaction. The magnitude of the differential cross section of (p,n) experiment is proportional to the square of the isovector term of the real part of the nucleon optical potential v1, so the extraction of the value of v1 is straightforward by using the plane wave Born approximation. Based on the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, the nuclear symmetry energy Esym(ρ0) and its density slope L(ρ0) are estimated by using the extracted value of v1. The calculated results Esym(ρ0)=(28.5 ± 2.0) MeV, L(ρ0)=(67.0 ± 5.0) MeV agree reasonably with those extracted by analysing nuclear masses and other experimental data.

Abstract:It is shown that the experimentally observed decrease of nuclear symmetry energy with increasing centrality or excitation energy in isotopic scaling analyses of heavy-ion reactions can be well understood analytically within a degenerate Fermi gas model. The evolution of the symmetry energy is found to be mainly due to the variation in the freeze-out density rather than temperature. The isoscaling analyses are useful for probing the interaction part of the nuclear symmetry energy, provided that both the freeze-out temperature and density of the fragments can be inferred simultaneously from the experiments.

Delineating Effects of Tensor Force on the Density Dependence of Nuclear Symmetry Energy

Abstract:In this talk, we report results of our recent studies to delineate effects of the tensor force on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy within phenomenological models. The tensor force active in the isosinglet neutron roton interaction channel leads to appreciable depletion/population of nucleons below/above the Fermi surface in the single-nucleon momentum distribution in cold symmetric nuclear matter (SNM). We found that as a consequence of the high momentum tail in SNM the kinetic part of the symmetry energy Ekinsym(ρ) is significantly below the well-known Fermi gas model prediction of approximately 125(ρ/ρ0)2/3. With about 15% nucleons in the high momentum tail as indicated by the recent experiments at J-Lab by the CLAS Collaboration, the Ekinsym(ρ) is negligibly small. It even becomes negative when more nucleons are in the high momentum tail in SNM. These features have recently been confirmed by three independent studies based on the state-of-the-art microscopic nuclear many-body theories. In addition, we also estimate the second-order tensor force contribution to the potential part of the symmetry energy. Implications of these findings in extracting information about nuclear symmetry energy from nuclear reactions are discussed briefly.

Abstract:The density-dependence of symmetry energy is of particular importance to many problems in nuclear physics and astrophysics.Exotic cluster radioactivity is proposed to constrain the density slope of symmetry energy L(ρ0) by using the density-dependent cluster model (DDCM) where the cluster radioactivity serves as a link between the neutron skin thickness of 20spb and the density slope L(ρ0).The isovector part of cluster-20sPb potential constructed from the M3Y nucleon-nucleon interaction is found to be very important in determining the density slope parameter L(ρ0).The correlation between the neutron skin thickness of 208pb and the density slope parameter are obtained from cluster radioactivities around 208pb with measured data.The constraint of L(ρ0) from proton radioactivity is also discussed.

Abstract:One of the major tasks of studying isospin physics via heavy-ion collisions with neutron-rich nuclei, is to explore the isospin dependence of in-medium nuclear effective interactions and the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter, i.e., the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy. Because of its great importance for understanding many phenomena in both nuclear physics and astrophysics, the study of the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy has been the main focus of the intermediate-energy heavy-ion physics community during the last decade. Nowadays significant progress has been achieved in studying the low density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy, but the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy is still very uncertain. Theoretically, a number of observables have been proposed as sensitive probes to the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy. With new opportunities provided by the various radioactive beam facilities being constructed around the world, studies of the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy is expected to be one of the main forefront research areas in nuclear physics in the near future. In this report, based on the transport model IBUU we have reviewed the major progress achieved in studying the high density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy and discussed future challenges in this field.

Abstract:We explore the systematics of the density dependence of nuclear matter symmetry energy in the ambit of microscopic calculations with various energy density functionals, and find that the symmetry energy from subsaturation density to supra-saturation density can be well determined by three characteristic parameters of the symmetry energy at saturation density ρ0, i.e., the magnitude Esym(ρ0), the density slope L and the density curvature Ksym. This finding opens a new window to constrain the supra-saturation density behavior of the symmetry energy from its (sub-)saturation density behavior. In particular, we obtain L = 46.7 ± 12.8 MeV and Ksym = −166.9 ± 168.3 MeV as well as Esym(2ρ0) ≈ 40.2 ± 12.8 MeV and L(2ρ0) ≈ 8.9±108.7 MeV based on the present knowledge of Esym(ρ0) = 32.5 ± 0.5 MeV, Esym(ρc) = 26.65±0.2 MeV and L(ρc) = 46.0±4.5 MeV at ρc = 0.11 fm−3 extracted from nuclear mass and the neutron skin thickness of Sn isotopes. Our results indicate that the symmetry energy cannot be stiffer than a linear density dependence. In addition, we also discuss the quark matter symmetry energy since the deconfined quarks could be the right degree of freedom in dense matter at high baryon densities.
Extracting the Nuclear Symmetry Potential and Energy from Neutron–nucleus Scattering Data

Abstract:According to the Hugenholtz–Van Hove theorem, the symmetry energy and its density slope can be decomposed uniquely in terms of the single-nucleon potential in asymmetric nuclear matter which, at normal density, can be constrained by the nucleon optical model potential extracted from analyzing the nucleon–nucleus scattering data. To more accurately extract information on the symmetry energy and its density slope at normal density from neutron–nucleus scattering data, going beyond the well-known Lane potential, we include consistently the second-order terms in isospin asymmetry in both the optical model potential and the symmetry energy decomposition. We find that the strength of the second-order symmetry potential Usym,2 in asymmetric nuclear matter is significant compared to the first-order one Usym,1, especially at high nucleon momentum. While the Usym,1 at normal density decreases with nucleon momentum, the Usym,2 is found to have the opposite behavior. Moreover, we discuss effects of the Usym,1 and Usym,2 on determining the density dependence of the symmetry energy, and we find that the available neutron–nucleus scattering data favor a softer density dependence of the symmetry energy at normal density with a negligible contribution from the Usym,2.

Abstract:The physical origin of the nuclear symmetry energy is studied within the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. Based on the nuclear binding energies calculated with and without mean isovector potential for several isobaric chains we confirm earlier Skyrme–Hartree–Fock result that the nuclear symmetry energy strength depends on the mean level spacing ɛ(A) and an effective mean isovector potential strength κ(A). A detailed analysis of the isospin dependence of these two components contributing to the nuclear symmetry energy reveals a quadratic dependence due to the mean-isoscalar potential, ∼ɛT2, and, completely unexpectedly, the presence of a strong linear component ∼κT(T+1+ɛ/κ) in the isovector potential. The latter generates a nuclear symmetry energy in RMF theory that is proportional to Esym∼T(T+1) at variance to the non-relativistic calculation. The origin of the linear term in RMF theory needs to be further explored.

Abstract:Using the relativistic impulse approximation with the Love-Franey NN scattering amplitude developed by Murdock and Horowitz, we investigate the low-energy (100 <= E-kin <= 400 MeV) behavior of the nucleon Dirac optical potential, the Schrodinger-equivalent potential, and the nuclear symmetry potential in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. We find that the nuclear symmetry potential at fixed baryon density decreases with increasing nucleon energy. In particular, the nuclear symmetry potential at saturation density changes from positive to negative values at nucleon kinetic energy of about 200 MeV. Furthermore, the obtained energy and density dependence of the nuclear symmetry potential is consistent with those of the isospin- and momentum-dependent MDI interaction with x=0, which has been found to describe reasonably well both the isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion collisions and the empirical neutron-skin thickness of Pb-208.
High-energy Behavior of the Nuclear Symmetry Potential in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

Abstract:Using the relativistic impulse approximation with empirical NN scattering amplitude and the nuclear scalar and vector densities from the relativistic mean-field theory, we evaluate the Dirac optical potential for neutrons and protons in asymmetric nuclear matter. From the resulting Schrodinger-equivalent potential, the high-energy behavior of the nuclear symmetry potential is studied. We find that the symmetry potential at fixed baryon density is essentially constant once the nucleon kinetic energy is greater than about 500 MeV. Moreover, for such a high-energy nucleon, the symmetry potential is slightly negative below a baryon density of about rho = 0.22 fm(-3) and then increases almost linearly to positive values at high densities. Our results thus provide an important constraint on the energy and density dependence of nuclear symmetry potential in asymmetric nuclear matter.

Abstract:By using the Hugenholtz–Van Hove (HVH) theorem, the symmetry potential in asymmetric nuclear matter is found to be closely related to symmetry energy Esym(ρ) and its density slope L(ρ). The energy dependence of symmetry potential at saturation density ρ0 is extracted by using recent constraints on both Esym(ρ0) and L(ρ0) from different methods not only in nuclear structures and reactions but also in astrophysics. The extracted symmetry potentials from different methods are found to be generally consistent with each other. By averaging all extracted symmetry potentials, an energy-dependent form of symmetry potential at the saturation density is obtained, which could be useful to calibrate the single-particle potentials in mean-field models of structures and transport models of reactions.
Progress in Constraining Nuclear Symmetry Energy Using Neutron Star Observables Since GW170817

Abstract:The density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy is among the most uncertain parts of the Equation of State (EOS) of dense neutron-rich nuclear matter. It is currently poorly known especially at suprasaturation densities partially because of our poor knowledge about isovector nuclear interactions at short distances. Because of its broad impacts on many interesting issues, pinning down the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy has been a longstanding and shared goal of both astrophysics and nuclear physics. New observational data of neutron stars including their masses, radii, and tidal deformations since GW170817 have helped improve our knowledge about nuclear symmetry energy, especially at high densities. Based on various model analyses of these new data by many people in the nuclear astrophysics community, while our brief review might be incomplete and biased unintentionally, we learned in particular the following: (1) The slope parameter L of nuclear symmetry energy at saturation density ρ0 of nuclear matter from 24 new analyses of neutron star observables was about L≈57.7±19 MeV at a 68% confidence level, consistent with its fiducial value from surveys of over 50 earlier analyses of both terrestrial and astrophysical data within error bars. (2) The curvature Ksym of nuclear symmetry energy at ρ0 from 16 new analyses of neutron star observables was about Ksym≈−107±88 MeV at a 68% confidence level, in very good agreement with the systematics of earlier analyses. (3) The magnitude of nuclear symmetry energy at 2ρ0, i.e., Esym(2ρ0)≈51±13 MeV at a 68% confidence level, was extracted from nine new analyses of neutron star observables, consistent with the results from earlier analyses of heavy-ion reactions and the latest predictions of the state-of-the-art nuclear many-body theories. (4) While the available data from canonical neutron stars did not provide tight constraints on nuclear symmetry energy at densities above about 2ρ0, the lower radius boundary R2.01=12.2 km from NICER’s very recent observation of PSR J0740+6620 of mass 2.08±0.07M⊙ and radius R=12.2–16.3 km at a 68% confidence level set a tight lower limit for nuclear symmetry energy at densities above 2ρ0. (5) Bayesian inferences of nuclear symmetry energy using models encapsulating a first-order hadron–quark phase transition from observables of canonical neutron stars indicated that the phase transition shifted appreciably both L and Ksym to higher values, but with larger uncertainties compared to analyses assuming no such phase transition. (6) The high-density behavior of nuclear symmetry energy significantly affected the minimum frequency necessary to rotationally support GW190814’s secondary component of mass (2.50–2.67) M⊙ as the fastest and most massive pulsar discovered so far. Overall, thanks to the hard work of many people in the astrophysics and nuclear physics community, new data of neutron star observations since the discovery of GW170817 have significantly enriched our knowledge about the symmetry energy of dense neutron-rich nuclear matter.
The symmetry energy in nucleon and quark matter

Abstract:The symmetry energy characterizes the isospin dependent part of the equation of state of isospin asymmetric strong interaction matter and it plays a critical role in many issues of nuclear physics and astrophysics. In this talk, we briefly review the current status on the determination of the symmetry energy in nucleon (nuclear) and quark matter. For nuclear matter, while the subsaturation density behaviors of the symmetry energy are relatively well-determined and significant progress has been made on the symmetry energy around saturation density, the determination of the suprasaturation density behaviors of the symmetry energy remains a big challenge. For quark matter, which is expected to appear in dense matter at high baryon densities, we briefly review the recent work about the effects of quark matter symmetry energy on the properties of quark stars and the implication of possible existence of heavy quark stars on quark matter symmetry energy. The results indicate that the $u$ and $d$ quarks could feel very different interactions in isospin asymmetric quark matter, which may have important implications on the isospin effects of partonic dynamics in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:Effects of the short-range tensor interaction on the density-dependence of nuclear symmetry energy are examined by applying an approximate expression for the second-order tensor contribution to the symmetry energy derived earlier by G.E. Brown and R. Machleidt. It is found that the uncertainty in the short-range tensor force leads directly to a divergent high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.
