Abstract:We characterise the strictly closed left invariant C*-subalgebras of the C*-algebra C_b(G) of bounded continuous functions on a locally compact group G. On the dual side, we characterise the strictly closed invariant C*-subalgebras of the multiplier algebra of the reduced group C*-algebra C*_r(G) when G is amenable. In both cases, these C*-subalgebras correspond to closed subgroups of G.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore and solve the problem of the correspondence between strictly closed invariant \(C^*\)-subalgebras of a locally compact group \(G\) and closed subgroups of \(G\). Specifically, the author attempts to prove the following two points: 1. **There is a one - to - one correspondence between closed subgroups of a locally compact group \(G\) and strictly closed left - invariant \(C^*\)-subalgebras in \(C_b(G)\)**: - Here \(C_b(G)\) represents the \(C^*\)-algebra consisting of all bounded continuous functions on \(G\). - For a closed subgroup \(H\), the corresponding \(C^*\)-subalgebra \(X\) is defined as: \[ X=\{f\in C_b(G);R_s f = f\text{ for each }s\in H\} \] - Conversely, for a strictly closed left - invariant \(C^*\)-subalgebra \(X\), the corresponding closed subgroup \(H\) is defined as: \[ H = \{s\in G;R_s f = f\text{ for each }f\in X\} \] 2. **When \(G\) is a transitive locally compact group, there is also a one - to - one correspondence between closed subgroups and strictly closed invariant \(C^*\)-subalgebras in \(M(C_r^*(G))\)**: - Here \(M(C_r^*(G))\) represents the multiplier algebra of the reduced group \(C^*\)-algebra \(C_r^*(G)\) of \(G\). - For a closed subgroup \(H\), the corresponding \(C^*\)-subalgebra \(X\) is defined as: \[ X=\{x\in M(C_r^*(G));\text{supp }x\subseteq H\} \] - Conversely, for a strictly closed invariant \(C^*\)-subalgebra \(X\), the corresponding closed subgroup \(H\) is defined as: \[ H=\{s\in G;\lambda(s)\in X\} \] These results indicate that, in the framework of \(C^*\)-algebras, it is usually more appropriate to use the strict topology rather than the norm topology. Through these correspondences, the structure of locally compact groups and their related \(C^*\)-algebra properties can be better understood.
