Abstract:We show that any directed colimit of acessible categories and accessible full embeddings is accessible and, assuming the existence of arbitrarily large strongly compact cardinals, any directed colimit of acessible categories and accessible embeddings is accessible.

Abstract:In this paper we characterize those accessible $\mathcal V$-categories that have limits of a specified class. We do this by introducing the notion of companion $\mathfrak C$ for a class of weights $\Psi$, as a collection of special types of colimit diagrams that are compatible with $\Psi$. We then characterize the accessible $\mathcal V$-categories with $\Psi$-limits as those accessibly embedded and $\mathfrak C$-virtually reflective in a presheaf $\mathcal V$-category, and as the $\mathcal V$-categories of $\mathfrak C$-models of sketches. This allows us to recover the standard theorems for locally presentable, locally multipresentable, and locally polypresentable categories as instances of the same general framework. In addition, our theorem covers the case of any weakly sound class $\Psi$, and provides a new perspective on the case of weakly locally presentable categories.

Abstract:Let $\kappa$ be a regular cardinal, $\lambda<\kappa$ be a smaller infinite cardinal, and $\mathsf K$ be a $\kappa$-accessible category where colimits of $\lambda$-indexed chains exist. We show that various category-theoretic constructions applied to $\mathsf K$, such as the inserter and the equifier, produce $\kappa$-accessible categories $\mathsf E$ again, and the most obvious expected description of the full subcategory of $\kappa$-presentable objects in $\mathsf E$ in terms of $\kappa$-presentable objects in $\mathsf K$ holds true. In particular, if $\mathsf C$ is a $\kappa$-small category, then the category of functors $\mathsf C\rightarrow\mathsf K$ is $\kappa$-accessible, and its $\kappa$-presentable objects are precisely all the functors from $\mathsf C$ to the $\kappa$-presentable objects of $\mathsf K$. We proceed to discuss the preservation of $\kappa$-accessibility by conical pseudolimits, lax and oplax limits, and weighted pseudolimits. The results of this paper go back to an unpublished 1977 preprint of Ulmer. Our motivation comes from the theory of flat modules and flat quasi-coherent sheaves.

Abstract:We develop a 2-dimensional version of accessibility and presentability compatible with the formalism of flat pseudofunctors. First we give prerequisites on the different notions of 2-dimensional colimits, filteredness and cofinality; in particular we show that sigma-filteredness and bifilteredness are actually equivalent in practice for our purposes. Then, we define bi-accessible and bipresentable 2-categories in terms of bicompact objects and bifiltered bicolimits. We then characterize them as categories of flat pseudofunctors. We also prove a bi-accessible right bi-adjoint functor theorem and deduce a 2-dimensional Gabriel-Ulmer duality relating small bilex 2-categories and finitely bipresentable 2-categories. Finally, we show that 2-categories of pseudo-algebras of bifinitary pseudomonads on Cat are finitely bipresentable, which in particular captures the case of Lex, the 2-category of small lex categories. Invoking the technology of lex-colimits, we prove further that several 2-categories arising in categorical logic (Reg, Ex, Coh, Ext, Adh, Pretop) are also finitely bipresentable.

Colimits of categories, zig-zags and necklaces

Abstract:Given a diagram of small categories $F : J \rightarrow \textbf{Cat}$, we provide a combinatorial description of its colimit in terms of the indexing category $J$ and the categories and functors in the diagram $F$. We introduce certain double categories of zig-zags in order to keep track of the necessary identifications. We found these double categories necessary, but also explanatory. When applied pointwise in the simplicially enriched setting, our constructions offer a shorter proof of the necklace theorem of Dugger and Spivak by direct computation.

Abstract:We generalize to dimension 2 the well-known fact that a colimit in a 1-dimensional slice is precisely the map from the colimit of the domains which is induced by the universal property. We show two different approaches to this; a more intuitive one, based on the reduction of the weighted 2-colimits to oplax normal conical ones, and a more abstract one, based on an original concept of colim-fibration and on an extension of the Grothendieck construction. We find the need to consider lax slices, and prove results of preservation, reflection and lifting of 2-colimits for the domain 2-functor from a lax slice. The preservation result is shown by proving a general theorem of $\F$-category theory, which states that a lax left adjoint preserves appropriate colimits if the adjunction is strict on one side and is suitably $\F$-categorical. Finally, we apply this theorem of preservation of 2-colimits to the 2-functor of change of base along a split Grothendieck opfibration between lax slices, after showing that it is such a left adjoint by laxifying the proof that Conduché functors are exponentiable. We conclude extending the result of preservation of 2-colimits for the change of base 2-functor to any finitely complete 2-category with a dense generator.

Abstract:For a diagram of simplicial combinatorial model categories, we show that the associated lax limit, endowed with the projective model structure, is a presentation of the lax limit of the underlying $\infty$-categories. Our approach can also allow for the indexing category to be simplicial, as long as the diagram factors through its homotopy category. Analogous results for the associated homotopy limit (and other intermediate limits) directly follow.

Abstract:We prove an ambidexterity result for $\infty$-categories of $\infty$-categories admitting a collection of colimits. This unifies and extends two known phenomena: the identification of limits and colimits of presentable $\infty$-categories indexed by a space, and the $\infty$-semiadditivity of the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories with $\pi$-finite colimits proven by Harpaz. Our proof employs Stefanich's universal property for the higher category of iterated spans, which encodes ambidexterity phenomena in a coherent fashion.

On Colimits and Model Structures in Various Categories of Manifolds

Abstract:After explaining the importance of model categories in abstract homotopy theory, we provide concrete examples demonstrating that various categories of manifolds do not have all finite colimits, and hence cannot be model categories. We then consider various enlargements of our categories of manifolds, culminating in categories of presheaves. We explain how to produce model structures on these enlarged categories, culminating with answering an open problem involving Poincaré spaces.

Abstract:Pseudocolimits are formal gluing constructions that combine objects in a category indexed by a pseudofunctor. When the objects are categories and the domain of the pseudofunctor is small and filtered it has been known since Exppose 6 in SGA4 that the pseudocolimit can be computed by taking the Grothendieck construction of the pseudofunctor and inverting the class of cartesian arrows with respect to the canonical fibration. This paper is a reformatted version of a MSc thesis submitted and defended at Dalhousie University in August 2022. The first part presents a set of conditions for defining an internal category of elements of a diagram of internal categories and proves it is the oplax colimit. The second part presents a set of conditions on an ambient category and an internal category with an object of weak-equivalences that allows an internal description of the axioms for a category of (right) fractions and a definition of the internal category of (right) fractions when all the conditions and axioms are satisfied. These are combined to present a suitable context for computing the pseudocolimit of a small filtered diagram of internal categories.

Abstract:Homotopy limits and colimits are homotopical replacements for the usual limits and colimits of category theory, which can be approached either using classical explicit constructions or the modern abstract machinery of derived functors. Our first goal in this paper is expository: we explain both approaches and a proof of their equivalence. Our second goal is to generalize this result to enriched categories and homotopy weighted limits, showing that the classical explicit constructions still give the right answer in the abstract sense. This result partially bridges the gap between classical homotopy theory and modern abstract homotopy theory. To do this we introduce a notion of "enriched homotopical categories", which are more general than enriched model categories, but are still a good place to do enriched homotopy theory. This demonstrates that the presence of enrichment often simplifies rather than complicates matters, and goes some way toward achieving a better understanding of "the role of homotopy in homotopy theory."

Abstract:For any commutative ring $R$, we show that the categories of $R$-coalgebras and cocommutative $R$-coalgebras are locally $\aleph_1$-presentable, while the categories of $R$-flat $R$-coalgebras are $\aleph_1$-accessible. Similarly, for any associative ring $R$, the category of $R$-corings is locally $\aleph_1$-presentable, while the category of $R$-$R$-bimodule flat $R$-corings is $\aleph_1$-accessible. The cardinality of the ring $R$ can be arbitrarily large. We also discuss $R$-corings with surjective counit and flat kernel. The proofs are straightforward applications of an abstract category-theoretic principle going back to Ulmer. For right or two-sided $R$-module flat $R$-corings, our cardinality estimate for the accessibility rank is not as good. A generalization to comonoid objects in accessible monoidal categories is also considered.
