Abstract:We develop the theory of limits and colimits in $\infty$-categories within the synthetic framework of simplicial Homotopy Type Theory developed by Riehl and Shulman. We also show that in this setting, the limit of a family of spaces can be computed as a dependent product.

Abstract:We study exponentiable functors in the context of synthetic $\infty$-categories. We do this within the framework of simplicial Homotopy Type Theory of Riehl and Shulman. Our main result characterizes exponentiable functors. In order to achieve this, we explore Segal type completions. Moreover, we verify that our result is semantically sound.

Abstract:For a diagram of simplicial combinatorial model categories, we show that the associated lax limit, endowed with the projective model structure, is a presentation of the lax limit of the underlying $\infty$-categories. Our approach can also allow for the indexing category to be simplicial, as long as the diagram factors through its homotopy category. Analogous results for the associated homotopy limit (and other intermediate limits) directly follow.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a model category structure in the category of functors from a filtered poset to cochain complexes in which higher limits of functors that take values in $R$-modules can be computed by means of a fibrant replacement. We explicitly describe a procedure to compute the fibrant replacement and, finally, deduce some vanishing bounds for the higher limits.

Abstract:We show that the notion of $(\infty,n)$-limit defined using the enriched approach and the one defined using the internal approach coincide. We also give explicit constructions of various double $(\infty,n-1)$-categories implementing various join constructions, slice constructions and cone constructions, and study their properties. We further prove that key examples of $(\infty,n)$-categories are (co)complete.

Abstract:Homotopy limits and colimits are homotopical replacements for the usual limits and colimits of category theory, which can be approached either using classical explicit constructions or the modern abstract machinery of derived functors. Our first goal in this paper is expository: we explain both approaches and a proof of their equivalence. Our second goal is to generalize this result to enriched categories and homotopy weighted limits, showing that the classical explicit constructions still give the right answer in the abstract sense. This result partially bridges the gap between classical homotopy theory and modern abstract homotopy theory. To do this we introduce a notion of "enriched homotopical categories", which are more general than enriched model categories, but are still a good place to do enriched homotopy theory. This demonstrates that the presence of enrichment often simplifies rather than complicates matters, and goes some way toward achieving a better understanding of "the role of homotopy in homotopy theory."

Abstract:We define and study the $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ of $(\infty,1)$-categories internal to a general $(\infty,1)$-category $\mathcal{C}$ via an associated externalization construction. In the first part, we show various formal closure properties of $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ regarding limits, tensors, cotensors and internal mapping objects under the assumption of various suitable closure properties of $\mathcal{C}$. In particular, we show that $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ defines a cartesian closed full sub-$\infty$-cosmos of the $\infty$-cosmos $\mathbf{Fun}(\mathcal{C}^{op},\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty})$ of $\mathcal{C}$-indexed $(\infty,1)$-categories under suitable assumptions on $\mathcal{C}$. We furthermore characterize the objects of $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathcal{C})$ by means of a Yoneda lemma that expresses indexed diagrams of internal shape over $\mathcal{C}$ in terms of an $(\infty,1)$-categorical totalization. In the second part, we relate the general theory developed to this point to results in the model categorical literature. We show that every model category $\mathbb{M}$ gives rise to a ''hands-on'' $\infty$-cosmos $\mathbf{Cat}_{\infty}(\mathbb{M})$ (of not-necessarily cofibrant objects) directly by restriction of the Reedy model structure on $\mathbb{M}^{\Delta^{op}}$. We then define an according right derived model categorical externalization functor, and use it to show that the $(\infty,1)$-categorical and the model categorical constructions correspond to one another whenever $\mathcal{C}$ is presentable and $\mathbb{M}$ is a suitable presentation thereof.

Global homotopy theory via partially lax limits

Abstract:We provide new $\infty$-categorical models for unstable and stable global homotopy theory. We use the notion of partially lax limits to formalize the idea that a global object is a collection of $G$-objects, one for each compact Lie group $G$, which are compatible with the restriction-inflation functors. More precisely, we show that the $\infty$-category of global spaces is equivalent to a partially lax limit of the functor sending a compact Lie group $G$ to the $\infty$-category of $G$-spaces. We also prove the stable version of this result, showing that the $\infty$-category of global spectra is equivalent to the partially lax limit of a diagram of $G$-spectra. Finally, the techniques employed in the previous cases allow us to describe the $\infty$-category of proper $G$-spectra for a Lie group $G$, as a limit of a diagram of $H$-spectra for $H$ running over all compact subgroups of $G$.

Formalizing the $\infty$-Categorical Yoneda Lemma

Abstract:Formalized $1$-category theory forms a core component of various libraries of mathematical proofs. However, more sophisticated results in fields from algebraic topology to theoretical physics, where objects have "higher structure," rely on infinite-dimensional categories in place of $1$-dimensional categories, and $\infty$-category theory has thusfar proved unamenable to computer formalization. Using a new proof assistant called Rzk, which is designed to support Riehl-Shulman's simplicial extension of homotopy type theory for synthetic $\infty$-category theory, we provide the first formalizations of results from $\infty$-category theory. This includes in particular a formalization of the Yoneda lemma, often regarded as the fundamental theorem of category theory, a theorem which roughly states that an object of a given category is determined by its relationship to all of the other objects of the category. A key feature of our framework is that, thanks to the synthetic theory, many constructions are automatically natural or functorial. We plan to use Rzk to formalize further results from $\infty$-category theory, such as the theory of limits and colimits and adjunctions.

Abstract:We develop the theory of exact completions of regular $\infty$-categories, and show that the $\infty$-categorical exact completion (resp. hypercompletion) of an abelian category recovers the connective half of its bounded (resp. unbounded) derived $\infty$-category. Along the way, we prove that a finitely complete $\infty$-category is exact and additive if and only if it is prestable, extending a classical characterization of abelian categories. We also establish $\infty$-categorical versions of Barr's embedding theorem and Makkai's image theorem.

Abstract:We introduce partially lax limits of infinity-categories, which interpolate between ordinary limits and lax limits. Most naturally occurring examples of lax limits are only partially lax; we give examples arising from enriched categories and operads. Our main result is a formula for partially lax limits and colimits in terms of the Grothendieck construction. This generalizes a formula of Lurie for ordinary limits and of Gepner-Haugseng-Nikolaus for fully lax limits.

Abstract:We define and study notions of comprehension in $(\infty,1)$-category theory. In essence, we do so by implementing Bénabou's foundations of naive category theory in a univalent meta-theory. In particular, we develop natural generalizations of smallness and relative definability in this context, and show for instance that the universal cartesian fibration is small. Furthermore, by building on Johnstone's notion of comprehension schemes for ordinary fibered categories, we characterize and relate numerous higher categorical properties and structures such as left exactness, local cartesian closedness, univalent morphisms and internal $(\infty,1)$-categories in terms of comprehension schemes.

The higher algebra of weighted colimits

Abstract:We develop a theory of weighted colimits in the framework of weakly bienriched $\infty$-categories, an extension of Lurie's notion of enriched $\infty$-categories. We prove an existence result for weighted colimits, study weighted colimits of diagrams of enriched functors, express weighted colimits via enriched coends, characterize the enriched $\infty$-category of enriched presheaves as the free cocompletion under weighted colimits, prove a Bousfield-Kan formula for weighted colimits and an enriched adjoint functor theorem and develop a theory of universally adjoining weighted colimits to an enriched $\infty$-category. Via the latter we construct for every presentably $\mathbb{E}_{k+1}$-monoidal $\infty$-category $\mathcal{V}$ for $1 \leq k \leq \infty$ and set $\mathcal{H}$ of weights a presentably $\mathbb{E}_k$-monoidal structure on the $\infty$-category of $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\infty$-categories that admit $\mathcal{H}$-weighted colimits. Varying $\mathcal{H}$ this $\mathbb{E}_k$-monoidal structure interpolates between the tensor product for $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\infty$-categories and the relative tensor product for $\infty$-categories presentably left tensored over $\mathcal{V}$. Studying functoriality in $\mathcal{H}$ we deduce that taking $\mathcal{V}$-enriched presheaves is $\mathbb{E}_k$-monoidal with respect to the tensor product on small $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\infty$-categories and the relative tensor product on $\infty$-categories presentably left tensored over $\mathcal{V}.$ As key applications we construct for every $n \geq 1 $ and set $\mathcal{K}$ of $(\infty, n)$-categories a tensor product for $(\infty,n)$-categories that admit $\mathcal{K}$-indexed (op)lax colimits, a tensor product for Cauchy-complete $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\infty$-categories and tensor products for (Cauchy complete) $n$-stable, $n$-additive and $n$-preadditive $(\infty,n)$-categories.

Abstract:We propose a definition of higher inductive types in $(\infty,1)$-categories with finite limits. We show that the $(\infty,1)$-category of $(\infty,1)$-categories with higher inductive types is finitarily presentable. In particular, the initial $(\infty,1)$-category with higher inductive types exists. We prove a form of canonicity: the global section functor for the initial $(\infty,1)$-category with higher inductive types preserves higher inductive types.

Abstract:We describe the framework for the notion of a restricted inverse limit of categories, with the main motivating example being the category of polynomial representations of the group $GL_{\infty}$. This category is also known as the category of strict polynomial functors of finite degree, and it is the restricted inverse limit of the categories of polynomial representations of $GL_n$. Abstract:We give structural results about bifibrations of (internal) $(\infty,1)$-categories with internal sums. This includes a higher version of Moens' Theorem, characterizing cartesian bifibrations with extensive aka stable and disjoint internal sums over lex bases as Artin gluings of lex functors. We also treat a generalized version of Moens' Theorem due to Streicher which does not require the Beck--Chevalley condition. Furthermore, we show that also in this setting the Moens fibrations can be characterized via a condition due to Zawadowski. Our account overall follows Streicher's presentation of fibered category theory à la Bénabou, generalizing the results to the internal, higher-categorical case, formulated in a synthetic setting. Namely, we work inside simplicial homotopy type theory, which has been introduced by Riehl and Shulman as a logical system to reason about internal $(\infty,1)$-categories, interpreted as Rezk objects in any given Grothendieck--Rezk--Lurie $(\infty,1)$-topos.
