Abstract:We pinpoint how a subatomic particle with non-zero mass may attain, in principle, velocities faster-than-light by travelling in helical motion in the limit of very large momentum. This is an educated guess by virtue of the MINOS and OPERA experiments on eventual superluminal propagation of neutrinos.

Abstract:Whether there is a superluminal object existing in the real world is a mystery in modern physics. Recently, OPERA collaboration claims that they have observed superluminal neutrinos in their experiments. This leads to a rest mass paradox by combining the observational results from SN1987A, if one considers the neutrino as a tachyon. In this paper, we identify the neutrino as a tachyonic chameleon, whose mass depends not only on coordinate frame but also on the environment, in which the neutrino propagates without the need of violation of the Lorentz-invariance at a fundamental level. We have compared our results with these observations and made some predictions that can be tested in the near future. Also, we have clarified the concept of rest mass for subluminal and superluminal object.

Abstract:The OPERA experiment has reported neutrinos, from the CNGS beam, that arrived to Gran Sasso Laboratory 60ns earlier that expected for light, within a statistical error margin of §6:9 and a systemic error of §7:4. Therefore, these neutrinos are faster than known velocity of the light in vacuum. These puzzling result could be explained by stimulated emission of neutrinos in the decay tunnel, in close analogy with the amplification of a LASER pulse.

Abstract:This report presents a brief review on the experimental measurements of the muon neutrino velocities from the OPERA, Fermilab and MINOS experiments and that of the (anti)-electron neutrino velocities from the supernova SN1987A, and consequently on the theoretical attempts to attribute the data as signals for superluminality of neutrinos. Different scenarios on how to understand and treat the background fields in the effective field theory frameworks are pointed out. Challenges on interpreting the OPERA result as a signal of neutrino superluminality are briefly reviewed and discussed. It is also pointed out that a covariant picture of Lorentz violation may avoid the refutation on the OPERA experiment.

Abstract:In this work we consider a possible conceptual similarity between recent, amazing OPERA experiment of the superluminal propagation of neutrino and experiment of the gain-assisted superluminal light propagation realized about ten years ago. Last experiment refers on the propagation of the light, precisely laser pulse through a medium, precisely caesium atomic gas, with characteristic anomalous dispersion and corresponding negative group-velocity index with very large amplitude between two closely spaced gain lines (that is in some way similar to quantum theory of the ferromagnetism). It implies superluminal propagation of the light through this medium. Nevertheless all this, at it has been pointed out by authors, "is not at odds with causality or special relativity", since it simply represents "a direct consequence of the classical interference between ... different frequency components". We suggest that OPERA experiment can be in some way conceptually similar to the gain-assisted superluminal light propagation experiment. For this reason we suppose too that OPERA experiment can be simply explained in full agreement with causality and special relativity if there is some medium, precisely a scalar field (e.g. dark matter field, Higgs field or similar) through which neutrino propagates. We prove that, according to OPERA experiment data, supposed medium must be non-dispersive while its refractive index must be positive, smaller but relatively close to 1 (that is in some way similar to quantum theory of the diamagnetism). If it is true OPERA experiment results do not mean that special theory of relativity is broken, but they mean detection of suggested medium, i.e. a scalar field (e.g. dark matter field, Higgs field or similar).

Abstract:It is suggested that recent superluminal neutrinos from the OPERA collaboration might indicate that there are other ultimate speeds than usual speed of light in our universe. The leptonic sector of the standard model (SM) is reformulated incorporating with new ultimate speeds. In minimal cases where there is another maximum speed $c'$ which equals to the speed of the OPERA neutrinos, new effects would appear at the level of ${\cal O}(10^{-5})$. Improved precisions for the electroweak observables would check the validity of this scenario.

Abstract:The OPERA collaboration reported evidence for muonic neutrinos travelling faster than light in vacuum. In this paper, an extended relativity theory is proposed. We think all particles can be divided into three kinds: The first kind of particle is its velocity in the range of $0\leq v < c$, e.g. electron, atom, molecule and so on ($c$ is light velocity, i.e., the limit velocity of the first kind of particle). The second kind of particle is its velocity in the range of $0\leq v < c_{m1}$, e.g. photon ($c_{m1}$ is the limit velocity of the second kind of particle). The third kind of particle is its velocity in the range of $c\leq v < c_{m2}$, e.g. tachyon, and muonic neutrinos ($c_{m2}$ is the limit velocity of the third kind of particle). The first kind of particle is described by the special relativity. With the extended relativity theory, we can describe the second and third kinds particles, and can analysis the OPERA experiment results and calculate the muonic neutrinos mass.

Abstract:We study distances of propagation and the group velocities of the muon neutrinos in the presence of mixing and oscillations assuming that Lorentz invariance holds. Oscillations lead to distortion of the $\nu_\mu$ wave packet which, in turn, changes the group velocity and the distance $\nu_\mu$ travels. We find that the change of the distance, $d_{osc}$, is proportional to the length of the wave packet, $\sigma_x$, and the oscillation phase, $\phi_p$, acquired by neutrinos in the $\pi-$ and $K-$ meson decay tunnel where neutrino wave packet is formed: $d_{osc} \propto \sigma \phi_p$. Although the distance $d_{osc}$ may effectively correspond to the superluminal motion, the effect is too tiny ($\sim 10^{- 5}$ cm) to be reconciled with the OPERA result. We analyze various possibilities to increase $d_{osc}$ and discuss experimental setups in which $d_{osc}$ (corresponding to the superluminal motion) can reach an observable value $\sim 1$ m.

Abstract:We explore the recent OPERA experiment of superluminal neutrinos in the framework of special relativity with de Sitter spacetime symmetry (dS-SR). According to Einstein, a photon is treated as a massless particle in the framework of special relativity. In special relativity (SR) we have the universal parameter c, the photon velocity c photon and the phase velocity of a light wave in vacuum c wave = λν. Due to the null experiments of Michelson–Morley we have c = c wave . The parameter c photon is determined by the Noether charges corresponding to the spacetime symmetries of SR. In Einstein's special relativity (E-SR) we have c = c photon . In dS-SR, i.e. the special relativity with SO(4, 1) de Sitter spacetime symmetry, we have c photon > c. In this paper, the OPERA datum are examined in the framework of dS-SR. We show that OPERA anomaly is in agreement with the prediction of dS-SR with R≃1.95×1012 l.y. Based on the p-E relation of dS-SR, we also prove that the Cohen and Glashow's argument of possible superluminal neutrino's Cherenkov-like radiation is forbidden. We conclude that OPERA and ICARUS results are consistent and they are explained in the dS-SR framework.

Abstract:The debate on OPERA focused on two extremes: either "OPERA is wrong" or our formulation of the laws of physics needs a major overhaul. I here argue that some effort should be directed toward manifestations of laws that are already known, but whose implications are poorly understood in OPERA-type contexts. My preferred example of this sort is that the OPERA result might be the first observation of a previously unnoticed effect, belonging to a family of effects which includes those responsible for the well-known peculiar properties of the "tunneling time". Tentative support for this specific hypothesis comes from the presence of evanescence and "postselection", and the observation that the fraction of neutrinos absorbed in rock on the way from CERN to LNGS is of a few parts in $10^5$, i.e. comparable to the fraction of the overall travel time by which OPERA neutrinos are found to reach LNGS earlier than expected. This leads me to stress that the OPERA result is still consistent with subluminality of a suitably "postselection-corrected" velocity. Adopting the popular (but here disfavored) interpretation of the OPERA result as a "signal velocity" one could obtain superluminal values of the postselection-corrected velocity in some technologically feasible OPERA-like setups, a prediction which I propose to test. I also propose a semi-heuristic formula for the "rock dwell time" and find that it gives a result in rough agreement with the OPERA travel-time measurements. This suggests that effects similar to the ones found for OPERA's muon neutrinos should also be found, but with tangibly different magnitude, for muon anti-neutrinos under similar experimental conditions. And I argue that, whether or not they end up being relevant for the OPERA anomaly, the effects here considered should be significant in the Planck-scale realm.

Abstract:Most recently, the measurement of the neutrino velocity with the OPERA detector in the CNGS beam shows unexpected indication, that the muon neutrino velocity, $v_{\nu}$, exceeds the velocity of light in the vacuum, $c$, which is obviously in contradiction with the most basic hypothesis of modern physics. Within the framework of minimal Standard Model Extension, we discuss the modified dispersion relation and consequently the velocity-energy relation of muon neutrinos. The simplified models are fit to the OPERA data, Fermilab experiment and MINO data. We find that minimal Standard Extension can describe these long baseline superluminal neutrinos to a good accuracy. For the well-known tension between the OPERA measurement and the Supernova 1987A neutrino observation, we discussed two ways out of the contradiction.

Abstract:The understanding of space and time is the most important aspect of theoretical physics,and the current foundation of modern physics is based upon Einstein's relativistic spacetime.However,OPERA collaboration recently published their finding that muon neutrinos might travel raster than light,if proved, which will present a big revolution of Einstein's spacetime concepts.In this paper,we discuss OPERA superliiminal neutrinos from experimental discoveries,possible theoretical interpretations,its relationship to the concepts of spacetime,and possible directions for experimental and theoretical researches.Since the understanding of spacetime is extremely important,we expect further experimental evidence to support or falsify OPERA result,and improve our knowledge of spacetime.
OPERA, SN1987a and energy dependence of superluminal neutrino velocity

Abstract:This is a brief note discussing the energy dependence of superluminal neutrino velocities recently claimed by OPERA [1,2]. The analysis is based on the data provided there on this issue, as well as on consistency with neutrino data from SN1987a as recorded by the Kamioka detector [3]. It is seen that it is quite difficult to reconcile OPERA with SN1987a. The so called Coleman- Glashow dispersion relations do not do that well, if applied at all neutrino energies. The so called quantum gravity inspired dispersion relations perform far worse. Near OPERA energies both an energy-independent velocity, as well as a linear energy dependence with an offset that is comparable in value to the observed {\delta}v by OPERA at 28.1 GeV works very well. Our analysis shows that precision arrival time data from SN1987a still allow for superluminal behaviour for supernova neutrinos. A smooth interpolation is given that reconciles OPERA and SN1987a quite well. It suggests a fourth power energy dependence for {\delta}v of supernova neutrinos. This behaviour is insensitive to whether the velocities are energy-independent, or linearly dependent on energy, near OPERA scale of energies. Suggestions are made for experimental checks for these relations.
Olber's Paradox for Superluminal Neutrinos: Constraining Extreme Neutrino Speeds at TeV-ZeV Energies with the Diffuse Neutrino Background

Abstract:The only invariant speed in special relativity is c; therefore, if some neutrinos travel at even tiny speeds above c, normal special relativity is incomplete and any superluminal speed may be possible. I derive a limit on superluminal neutrino speeds v >> c at high energies by noting that such speeds would increase the size of the neutrino horizon. The increased volume of the Universe visible leads to a brighter astrophysical neutrino background. The nondetection of "guaranteed" neutrino backgrounds from star-forming galaxies and ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) constrains v/c at TeV--ZeV energies. I find that v/c <= 820 at 60 TeV from the nondetection of neutrinos from star-forming galaxies. The nondetection of neutrinos from UHECRs constrains v/c to be less than 2500 at 0.1 EeV in a pessimistic model and less than 4.6 at 4 EeV in an optimistic model. The UHECR neutrino background nondetection is strongly inconsistent with a naive quadratic extrapolation of the OPERA results to EeV energies. The limits apply subject to some caveats, particularly that the expected pionic neutrino backgrounds exist and that neutrinos travel faster than c when they pass the detector. They could be improved substantially as the expected neutrino backgrounds are better understood and with new experimental neutrino background limits. I also point out that extremely subluminal speeds would result in a much smaller neutrino background intensity than expected.

Abstract:We constrain Hořava–Lifshitz gravity using the results of the OPERA and ICARUS neutrino speed experiments, which show that neutrinos are luminal particles, as found from examining the fermion propagation in the earth’s gravitational field. In particular, investigating the Dirac equation in the spherical solutions of the theory, we find that the neutrinos feel an effective metric with respect to which they might propagate superluminally. Therefore, in demanding not to have superluminal or subluminal motion we constrain the parameters of the theory. Although the excluded parameter regions are very narrow, we find that the detailed balance case lies in the excluded region.

Abstract:We give an explanation on the effect of superluminal neutrinos in the OPERA experiment and show that the SN 1987A data and the recent OPERA data do agree well by the use of common known physics. The data in addition can give a good number for the matter-antimatter asymmetry at big bang time.

Abstract:We test several phenomenological scenarios of faster-than-light neutrinos, by fitting to the experimental data from OPERA, MINOS and Fermilab79. Our purpose is to see, from the perspective of the current data, whether or not the speed of the superluminal neutrino depends on its energy. We show that the Coleman-Glashow scenario in which the velocity of the neutrino is free of the energy fits the data best. However, the result of SN1987A cannot be explained by this model. We find that a power-law model with the power close to zero can simultaneously explain the results of SN1987A and OPERA+MINOS+Fermilab79.

Abstract:Recent results from the OPERA experiment reported a neutrino beam traveling faster than light. The experiment measured the neutrino time of flight (TOF) over a baseline from the CERN to the Gran Sasso site. The neutrino beam arrives 60 ns earlier than a light ray would do. Because the result has an enormous impact on science, it might be worth double-checking the time definitions with respect to the non-inertial system in which the neutrino travel time was measured. Potential problems in the OPERA data analysis connected with the definition of the reference frame and time synchronization are emphasized. We aim to investigate the synchronization of non-inertial clocks on Earth by relating this time to the proper time of an inertial observer at Solar System Barycenter(SSB). The Tempo2 software was used to time-stamp events observed on the geoid with respect to the SSB inertial observer time. Neutrino results from OPERA might carry the fingerprint of non-inertial effects. The CERN-Gran Sasso clock synchronization is accomplished by applying corrections that depend on special and general relativistic time dilation effects at the clocks, depending on the position of the clocks in the solar system gravitational well. As a consequence, TOF distributions are centered on values shorter by tens of ns than expected, integrating over a period from April to December, longer if otherwise. It is worth remarking that the OPERA runs have always been carried out from April/May to November. If the analysis by Tempo2 holds for the OPERA experiment, the excellent measurement by the OPERA collaboration will turn into a proof of the General Relativity theory in a weak field approximation. The analysis presented here is falsifiable because it predicts that performing the experiment from January to March/April, the neutrino beam will be detected to arrive 50 ns later than light.

Abstract:The OPERA experiment reported recently a puzzling result. The time of flight of a neutrino beam between the CERN and the Gran Sasso Laboratory has been measured to be slightly shorter than expected. More precisely, an early arrival time of the neutrino with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum of 60.7 ns was measured, with a quite high confidence level. Alternatively, one can conclude that the neutrinos travelled 18.2 m more than light would do in vacuum. In this short paper, we suggest a possible systematic effect that does not appear in the analysis and which can easily been probed to be confirmed.

Abstract:We study two superluminal neutrino scenarios where [Formula: see text] is a constant. To be consistent with the OPERA, Borexino and ICARUS experiments and with the SN1987a observations, we assume that δv ν on the Earth is about three-order larger than that on the interstellar scale. To explain the theoretical challenges from the Bremsstrahlung effects and pion decays, we consider the deformed Lorentz invariance, and show that the superluminal neutrino dispersion relations can be realized properly while the modifications to the dispersion relations of the other Standard Model particles can be negligible. In addition, we propose the deformed energy and momentum conservation laws for a generic physical process. In Scenario I the momentum conservation law is preserved while the energy conservation law is deformed. In Scenario II the energy conservation law is preserved while the momentum conservation law is deformed. We present the energy and momentum conservation laws in terms of neutrino momentum in Scenario I and in terms of neutrino energy in Scenario II. In such formats, the energy and momentum conservation laws are exactly the same as those in the traditional quantum field theory with Lorentz symmetry. Thus, all the above theoretical challenges can be automatically solved. We show explicitly that the Bremsstrahlung processes are forbidden and there is no problem for pion decays.
