Abstract:We prove the equivalence of two seemingly very different ways of generalising Rademacher's theorem to metric measure spaces. One such generalisation is based upon the notion of forming partial derivatives along a very rich structure of Lipschitz curves in a way analogous to the differentiability theory of Euclidean spaces. This approach to differentiability in this generality appears here for the first time and by examining this structure further, we naturally arrive to several descriptions of Lipschitz differentiability spaces.

Abstract:We review the basic definitions and properties concerning smooth structures, convenient spaces, diffeological spaces and tangent structures. The relation betwen them is described. A tangent structure is constructed for each pre-convenient space. This one is proved to be convenient iff the space and the tangent fibres coincide. Some basic comments on the relation with manifolds are given.

Abstract:We show if a metric measure space admits a differentiable structure then porous sets have measure zero and hence the measure is pointwise doubling. We then give a construction to show if we only require an approximate differentiable structure the measure need no longer be pointwise doubling.

Abstract:We combine Kirchheim's metric differentials with Cheeger charts in order to establish a non-embeddability principle for any collection $\mathcal C$ of Banach (or metric) spaces: if a metric measure space $X$ bi-Lipschitz embeds in some element in $\mathcal C$, and if every Lipschitz map $X\to Y\in \mathcal C$ is differentiable, then $X$ is rectifiable. This gives a simple proof of the rectifiability of Lipschitz differentiability spaces that are bi-Lipschitz embeddable in Euclidean space, due to Kell--Mondino. Our principle also implies a converse to Kirchheim's theorem: if all Lipschitz maps from a domain space to arbitrary targets are metrically differentiable, the domain is rectifiable. We moreover establish the compatibility of metric and w$^*$-differentials of maps from metric spaces in the spirit of Ambrosio--Kirchheim.

Abstract:Differentiable structure ensures that many of the basics of classical convex analysis extend naturally from Euclidean space to Riemannian manifolds. Without such structure, however, extensions are more challenging. Nonetheless, in Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded above (but possibly positive), we develop several basic building blocks. We define subgradients via projection and the normal cone, prove their existence, and relate them to the classical affine minorant property. Then, in what amounts to a simple calculus or duality result, we develop a necessary optimality condition for minimizing the sum of two convex functions.

Abstract:We compare three notions of genericity of separable metric structures. Our analysis provides a general model theoretic technique of showing that structures are generic in descriptive set theoretic (topological) sense and in measure theoretic sense. In particular, it gives a new perspective on Vershik's theorems on genericity and randomness of Urysohn's space among separable metric spaces.

Abstract:We consider general structures where formulas have truth values in the real unit interval as in continuous model theory, but whose predicates and functions need not be uniformly continuous with respect to a distance predicate. Every general structure can be expanded to a pre-metric structure by adding a distance predicate that is a uniform limit of formulas. Moreover, that distance predicate is unique up to uniform equivalence. We use this to extend the central notions in the model theory of metric structures to general structures, and show that many model-theoretic results from the literature about metric structures have natural analogues for general structures.

Abstract:Let $(M,d)$ be a complete metric space and let $\mathcal{F}(M)$ denote the Lipschitz-free space over $M$. We develop a ``Choquet theory of Lipshitz-free spaces'' that draws from the classical Choquet theory and the De Leeuw representation of elements of $\mathcal{F}(M)$ (and its bidual) by positive Radon measures on $\beta\widetilde{M}$, where $\widetilde{M}$ is the space of pairs $(x,y) \in M \times M$, $x \neq y$. We define a quasi-order $\preccurlyeq$ on the positive Radon measures on $\beta\widetilde{M}$ that is analogous to the classical Choquet order. Rather than in the classical case where the focus lies on maximal measures, we study the $\preccurlyeq$-minimal measures and show that they have a host of desirable properties. Among the applications of this theory is a solution (given elsewhere) to the extreme point problem for Lipschitz-free spaces.

Building Three-Dimensional Differentiable Manifolds Numerically II: Limitations

Abstract:Methods were developed in Ref. [1] for constructing reference metrics (and from them differentiable structures) on three-dimensional manifolds with topologies specified by suitable triangulations. This note generalizes those methods by expanding the class of suitable triangulations, significantly increasing the number of manifolds to which these methods apply. These new results show that this expanded class of triangulations is still a small subset of all possible triangulations. This demonstrates that fundamental changes to these methods are needed to further expand the collection of manifolds on which differentiable structures can be constructed numerically.

Abstract:This is the first of two works concerning the Sobolev calculus on metric measure spaces and its applications. In this work, we focus on several notions of metric Sobolev space and on their equivalence. More precisely, we give a systematic presentation of first-order p -Sobolev spaces, with , defined over a complete and separable metric space equipped with a boundedly- finite Borel measure. We focus on three different approaches: via approximation with Lipschitz functions; by studying the behaviour along curves, in terms either of the curve modulus or of test plans; via integration-by-parts, using Lipschitz derivations with divergence. Eventually, we show that all these approaches are fully equivalent. We emphasise that no doubling or Poincaré assumption is made, and that we allow also for the exponent . A substantial part of this work consists of a self-contained and partially-revisited exposition of known results, which are scattered across the existing literature, but it contains also several new results, mostly concerning the equivalence of metric Sobolev spaces for .

A Unified Framework for Generalizing the Gromov-Hausdorff Metric

Abstract:In this paper, an approach for generalizing the Gromov-Hausdorff metric is presented, which applies to metric spaces equipped with some additional structure. A special case is the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov metric between measured metric spaces. This abstract framework unifies several existing Gromov-Hausdorff-type metrics for metric spaces equipped with a measure, a point, a closed subset, a curve, a tuple of such structures, etc. Along with reviewing these special cases in the literature, several new examples are also presented. Two frameworks are provided, one for compact metric spaces and the other for boundedly-compact pointed metric spaces. In both cases, a Gromov-Hausdorff-type metric is defined and its topological properties are studied. In particular, completeness and separability is proved under some conditions. This enables one to study random metric spaces equipped with additional structures, which is the main motivation of this work.

Abstract:Bishop's measure theory (BMT) is an abstraction of the measure theory of a locally compact metric space , and the use of an informal notion of a set-indexed family of complemented subsets is crucial to its predicative character. The more general Bishop-Cheng measure theory (BCMT) is a constructive version of the classical Daniell approach to measure and integration, and highly impredicative, as many of its fundamental notions, such as the integration space of -integrable functions , rely on quantification over proper classes (from the constructive point of view). In this paper we introduce the notions of a pre-measure and pre-integration space, a predicative variation of the Bishop-Cheng notion of a measure space and of an integration space, respectively. Working within Bishop Set Theory (BST), and using the theory of set-indexed families of complemented subsets and set-indexed families of real-valued partial functions within BST, we apply the implicit, predicative spirit of BMT to BCMT. As a first example, we present the pre-measure space of complemented detachable subsets of a set with the Dirac-measure, concentrated at a single point. Furthermore, we translate in our predicative framework the non-trivial, Bishop-Cheng construction of an integration space from a given measure space, showing that a pre-measure space induces the pre-integration space of simple functions associated to it. Finally, a predicative construction of the canonically integrable functions , as the completion of an integration space, is included.

Abstract:Reparametrization invariant Sobolev metrics on spaces of regular curves have been shown to be of importance in the field of mathematical shape analysis. For practical applications, one usually discretizes the space of smooth curves and considers the induced Riemannian metric on a finite dimensional approximation space. Surprisingly, the theoretical properties of the corresponding finite dimensional Riemannian manifolds have not yet been studied in detail, which is the content of the present article. Our main theorem concerns metric and geodesic completeness and mirrors the results of the infinite dimensional setting as obtained by Bruveris, Michor and Mumford.
