Abstract:This is the fourth part in the series of articles <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.MG/0503397" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.MG/0503397">math.MG/0503397</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.MG/0503399" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.MG/0503399">math.MG/0503399</a>, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.MG/0509512" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.MG/0509512">math.MG/0509512</a> where the theory of valuations on manifolds is developed. In this part it is shown that the filtration on valuations introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.MG/0503399" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.MG/0503399">math.MG/0503399</a> is compatible with the product. Then it is proved that the Euler-Verdier involution on smooth valuations introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.MG/0503399" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.MG/0503399">math.MG/0503399</a> is an automorphism of the algebra of valuations. Then an integration functional on valuations with compact support is introduced, and a property of selfduality of valuations is proved. Next a space of generalized valuations is defined, and some basic properties of it are proved. Finally a canonical imbedding of the space of constructible functions on a real analytic manifold into the space of generalized valuations is constructed, and various structures on valuations are compared with known structures on constructible functions.

Non-Archimedean analogue of the space of valuations on convex sets

Abstract:In the last two decades a number of structures on the classical space of translation invariant valuations on convex bodies were discovered, e.g. product, convolution, a Fourier type transform. In this paper a non-Archimedean analogue of the space of such (even) valuations with similar structures is constructed. It is shown that, like in the classical case, the new space equipped with either product or convolution satisfies Poincaré duality and hard Lefschetz theorem.

Abstract:In this paper, we endow the space of continuous translation invariant valuations on convex sets generated by mixed volumes coupled with a suitable Radon measure on tuples of convex bodies with two appropriate norms. This enables us to construct a continuous extension of the convolution operator on smooth valuations to non-smooth valuations, which are in the completion of the spaces of valuations with respect to these norms. The novelty of our approach lies in the fact that our proof does not rely on the general theory of wave fronts, but on geometric inequalities deduced from optimal transport methods. We apply this result to prove a variant of Minkowski’s existence theorem, and generalize a theorem of Favre–Wulcan and Lin in complex dynamics over toric varieties by studying the linear actions on the Banach spaces of valuations and by studying their corresponding eigenspaces.

Abstract:This is a survey article on real algebra and geometry, and in particular on its recent applications in optimization and convexity. We first introduce basic notions and results from the classical theory. We then explain how these relate to optimization, mostly via semidefinite programming. We introduce interesting geometric problems arising from the classification of feasible sets for semidefinite programming. We close with a perspective on the very active area of non-commutative real algebra and geometry.

Convex valuations, from Whitney to Nash

Abstract:We consider the Whitney problem for valuations: does a smooth $j$-homogeneous translation-invariant valuation on $\mathbb R^n$ exist that has given restrictions to a fixed family $S$ of linear subspaces? A necessary condition is compatibility: the given valuations must coincide on intersections. We show that for $S=\mathrm{Gr}_r(\mathbb R^n)$, the grassmannian of $r$-planes, this condition becomes sufficient once $r\geq j+2$. This complements the Klain and Schneider uniqueness theorems with an existence statement, and provides a recursive description of the image of the cosine transform. Informally speaking, we show that the transition from densities to valuations is localized to codimension $2$. We then look for conditions on $S$ when compatibility is also sufficient for extensibility, in two distinct regimes: finite arrangements of subspaces, and compact submanifolds of the grassmannian. In both regimes we find unexpected flexibility. As a consequence of the submanifold regime, we prove a Nash-type theorem for valuations on compact manifolds, from which in turn we deduce the existence of Crofton formulas for all smooth valuations on manifolds. As an intermediate step of independent interest, we construct Crofton formulas for all odd translation-invariant valuations.

Abstract:We provide a general framework for the study of valuations on Banach lattices. This complements and expands several recent works about valuations on function spaces, including $L_p(\mu)$, Orlicz spaces and spaces $C(K)$ of continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space. In particular, we study decomposition properties, boundedness and integral representation of continuous valuations.

Abstract:We give a characterization of smooth, rotation and dually epi-translation invariant valuations and use this result to obtain a new proof of the Hadwiger theorem on convex functions. We also give a description of the construction of the functional intrinsic volumes using integration over the differential cycle and provide a new representation of these functionals as principal value integrals with respect to the Hessian measures.

Abstract:Valuations on the space of finite-valued convex functions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ that are continuous, dually epi-translation invariant, as well as $\mathrm{U}(n)$-invariant are completely classified. It is shown that the space of these valuations decomposes into a direct sum of subspaces defined in terms of vanishing properties with respect to restrictions to a finite family of special subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^n$, mirroring the behavior of the hermitian intrinsic volumes introduced by Bernig and Fu. Unique representations of these valuations in terms of principal value integrals involving two families of Monge-Ampère-type operators are established

Abstract:Narrow s-wave features with subthermal widths are predicted for the ^1Pi_g photoassociation spectra of cold alkaline earth atoms. The phenomenon is explained by numerical and analytical calculations. These show that only a small subthermal range of collision energies near threshold contributes to the s-wave features that are excited when the atoms are very far apart. The resonances survive thermal averaging, and may be detectable for Ca cooled near the Doppler cooling temperature of the 4^1P <- 4^1S laser cooling transition.

Equivariant Valuations on Convex Functions

Abstract:We classify all continuous valuations on the space of finite convex functions with values in the same space which are dually epi-translation-invariant and equi- resp. contravariant with respect to volume-preserving linear maps. We thereby identify the valuation-theoretic functional analogues of the difference body map and show that there does not exist a generalization of the projection body map in this setting. This non-existence result is shown to also hold true for valuations with values in the space of convex functions that are finite in a neighborhood of the origin.

Polynomial valuations on convex functions and their maximal extensions

Abstract:Extension problems for polynomial valuations on different cones of convex functions are investigated. It is shown that for the classes of functions under consideration, the extension problem reduces to a simple geometric obstruction on the support of these valuations. The results rely on a homogeneous decomposition for the space of polynomial valuations of bounded degree and the support properties of certain distributions associated to the homogeneous components. As an application, an explicit integral representation for valuations of top degree is established.

Abstract:In this paper, we study convex analysis and its theoretical applications. We first apply important tools of convex analysis to Optimization and to Analysis. We then show various deep applications of convex analysis and especially infimal convolution in Monotone Operator Theory. Among other things, we recapture the Minty surjectivity theorem in Hilbert space, and present a new proof of the sum theorem in reflexive spaces. More technically, we also discuss autoconjugate representers for maximally monotone operators. Finally, we consider various other applications in mathematical analysis.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Optimization, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 366-388, March 2024. Differentiable structure ensures that many of the basics of classical convex analysis extend naturally from Euclidean space to Riemannian manifolds. Without such structure, however, extensions are more challenging. Nonetheless, in Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded above (but possibly positive), we develop several basic building blocks. We define subgradients via projection and the normal cone, prove their existence, and relate them to the classical affine minorant property. Then, in what amounts to a simple calculus or duality result, we develop a necessary optimality condition for minimizing the sum of two convex functions.

Free Descriptions of Convex Sets

Abstract:Convex sets arising in a variety of applications are well-defined for every relevant dimension. Examples include the simplex and the spectraplex that correspond to probability distributions and to quantum states; combinatorial polytopes and their relaxations such as the cut polytope and the elliptope in integer programming; and unit balls of regularizers such as the $\ell_p$ and Schatten norms in inverse problems. Moreover, these sets are often specified using conic descriptions that can be obviously instantiated in any dimension. We develop a systematic framework to study such free descriptions of convex sets. We show that free descriptions arise from a recently-identified phenomenon in algebraic topology called representation stability, which relates invariants across dimensions in a sequence of group representations. Our framework yields structural results for free descriptions pertaining to the relations between the sets they describe across dimensions, extendability of a single set in a given dimension to a freely-described sequence, and continuous limits of such sequences. We also develop a procedure to obtain parametric families of freely-described convex sets whose structure is adapted to a given application; illustrations are provided via examples that arise in the literature as well as new families that are derived using our procedure. We demonstrate the utility of our framework in two contexts. First, we develop an algorithm for a free analog of the convex regression problem, where a convex function is fit to input-output data; by searching over our parametric families, we can fit a function to low-dimensional inputs and extend it to any other dimension. Second, we prove that many sequences of symmetric conic programs can be solved in constant time, which unifies and strengthens several results in the literature.

Abstract:In the paper we consider convex cones in infinite-dimensional real vector spaces which are endowed with no topology. The main purpose is to study an internal geometric structure of convex cones and to obtain an analytical description of those. To this end, we first introduce the notion of an open component of a convex cone and then prove that an arbitrary convex cone is the disjoint union of the partial ordered family of its open components and, moreover, as an ordered set this family is an upper semilattice. We identify the structure of this upper semilattice with the internal geometric structure of a convex cone. We demonstrate that the internal geometric structure of a convex cone is related to its facial structure but in the infinite-dimensional setting these two structures may differ each other. Further, we study the internal geometric structure of conical halfspaces (convex cones whose complements are also convex cones). We show that every conical halfspace is the disjoint union of the linear ordered family of its open components each of which is a conical halfspace in its linear hull. Using the internal geometric structure of conical halfspaces, each asymmetric conical halfspace is associated with a linearly ordered family of linear functions, which generates in turn a real-valued function, called a step-linear one, analytically describing this conical halfspace. At last, we establish that an arbitrary asymmetric convex cone admits an analytical representation by the family of step-linear functions.

Zonal valuations on convex bodies

Abstract:A complete classification of all zonal, continuous, and translation invariant valuations on convex bodies is established. The valuations obtained are expressed as principal value integrals with respect to the area measures. The convergence of these principal value integrals is obtained from a new weighted version of an inequality for the volume of spherical caps due to Firey. For Minkowski valuations, this implies a refinement of the convolution representation by Schuster and Wannerer in terms of singular integrals. As a further application, a new proof of the classification of $\mathrm{SO}(n)$-invariant, continuous, and dually epi-translation invariant valuations on the space of finite convex functions by Colesanti, Ludwig, and Mussnig is obtained.
