Abstract:One of the central issues in extremal set theory is Sperner's theorem and its generalizations. Among such generalizations is the best-known BLYM inequality and the Ahlswede--Zhang (AZ) identity which surprisingly generalizes the BLYM inequality into an identity. Sperner's theorem and the BLYM inequality has been also generalized to a wide class of posets. Another direction in this research was the study of more part Sperner systems. In this paper we derive AZ type identities for regular posets. We also characterize all maximum 2-part Sperner systems for a wide class of product posets.

Abstract:This purpose of this paper is to note an interesting identity derived from an integral in Gradshteyn and Ryzhik using techniques from George Boros'(deceased) Ph.D thesis. The idenity equates a sum to a product by evaluating an integral in two different ways. A more general form of the idenity is left for further investigation.

Abstract:This qualitative study investigates a cohort of Zhuang university students’ perceptions of their ethnicity, and the way they construct and negotiate their ethnic identity as they migrate from an inland, ethnic, autonomous province to study in an eastern, coastal municipality. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The findings indicate that the construction of ethnic Zhuang identity is influenced by the interplay between institutional power, sociocultural environment and individual agency. Specifically, participants show three divergent patterns of ethnic identification, namely: receivers, who readily accept their official ethnic classification but have limited ethnic awareness; constructors, who have strong ethnic awareness and strive for ethnic language transmission and heritage culture protection; and utilizers, who are keen on the instrumental values brought by their ethnicity. It is further found that the Zhuang language does not facilitate or strengthen ethnic Zhuang identification due to differences among language varieties.

Abstract:In this paper, a notion of negative side ϱ-mixing (ϱ −-mixing) which can be regarded as asymptotic negative association is defined, and some Rosenthal type inequalities for ϱ −-mixing random fields are established. The complete convergence and almost sure summability on the convergence rates with respect to the strong law of large numbers are also discussed for ϱ −-mixing random fields. The results obtained extend those for negatively associated sequences and ϱ * random fields.

Abstract:In 2007 V. Zhuravlev discovered a family of identities concerning integer parts which are satisfied by the number $\frac{\sqrt{5}+1}{2}$. Some of these identities turned out to be characterization properties of the number $\frac{\sqrt{5}+1}{2}$. In this paper we are generalizing the simplest of these identities.

Abstract:We study mixed identities for oligomorphic automorphism groups of countable relational structures. Our main result gives sufficient conditions for such a group to not admit a mixed identity without particular constants. We study numerous examples and prove in many cases that there cannot be a non-singular mixed identity.

Abstract:In this paper, we will study concentration inequalities for Banach space-valued martingales. Firstly, we prove that a Banach space $X$ is linearly isomorphic to a $p$-uniformly smooth space ($1<p\leq 2$) if and only if an Azuma-type inequality holds for $X$-valued martingales. This can be viewed as a generalization of Pinelis' work on Azuma inequality for martingales with values in $2$-uniformly smooth space. Secondly, Azuma-type inequality for self-normalized sums will be presented. Finally, some further inequalities for Banach space-valued martingales, such as moment inequalities for double indexed dyadic martingales and the De la Peña-type inequalities for conditionally symmetric martingales, will also be discussed.

Abstract:This paper involves an syncretic study of the structural characteristics, semantic stratification, graphical evolution and contextual analysis on a chronological base of the perplexing graphs and words which designate the Chinese, such as xia, hua and zhongguo, non-Chinese, such as yi, di, rong, and man, in early palaeographic and documentary sources. It shows how these terms evolved to distinguish between the two distinct ethnographical concepts in the early mind.The study shows that the conception of Hua-Xia and Zhongguo carried different connotations in the Western Zhou period from that defined in Spring and Autumn philological sources. The relocation of the Zhou capital to the east during the transition from Western to Eastern Zhou had generically diffused the concept of Xia and the elegant Ya culture. The conception of Xia and Yi, which had formerly distinguished between the Zhou elites and the non-Zhou people, came to distinguish between the central states and peripheral groups in the geographical sense, as well as between the Zhou subjects and the non-Zhou subjects in the political sense. Thus the conceptualisation of the so-called “Chinese-ness” postdates the actual formation of the ethnographical bulk of the Chinese people.

Abstract:A group G is called mixed identity-free if for every <math> n ∈ ℕ </math> and every <math> w ∈ G ∗ F n , </math> there exists a homomorphism <math> φ : G ∗ F n → G </math> such that <math> φ </math> is the identity on G and <math> φ ( w ) </math> is nontrivial. In this paper, we make a modification to the construction of elementary amenable lacunary hyperbolic groups provided by Ol'shanskii et al. to produce finitely generated elementary amenable groups which are mixed identity-free. As a byproduct of this construction, we also obtain locally finite p-groups which are mixed identity-free.

Abstract:Drawing parallels between human cognition and artificial intelligence, we explored how large language models (LLMs) internalize identities imposed by targeted prompts. Informed by Social Identity Theory, these identity assignments lead LLMs to distinguish between "we" (the ingroup) and "they" (the outgroup). This self-categorization generates both ingroup favoritism and outgroup bias. Nonetheless, existing literature has predominantly focused on ingroup favoritism, often overlooking outgroup bias, which is a fundamental source of intergroup prejudice and discrimination. Our experiment addresses this gap by demonstrating that outgroup bias manifests as strongly as ingroup favoritism. Furthermore, we successfully mitigated the inherent pro-liberal, anti-conservative bias in LLMs by guiding them to adopt the perspectives of the initially disfavored group. These results were replicated in the context of gender bias. Our findings highlight the potential to develop more equitable and balanced language models.

Abstract:The contradiction and tension between ethnic identity and state identity have been discussed widely both abroad and at home. The paper holds that conflict is not the connatural attribute or all contents of the relationship. Approaching the problem from the fundamental characteristics of identity, the author examines the relationship in terms of individuals and ethnic groups, explaining the fact that the two kinds of identities will coexist for a long time.

Abstract:This article integrates empirical findings from research in two cultural groups in the United States: Chicanos and Appalachians. Factor analysis of survey data concerning ethnicity gathered in the two groups produced similar factor patterns indicating three general dimensions of ethnicity: ethnic culture, ethnic group membership, and ethnic identity. Ethnic culture is the component of ethnicity that refers to the pattern of behaviors and beliefs that sets a group apart from others. Ethnic group membership refers to the network of people with whom an individual is in contact, and the ethnic affiliation of those people and the groups they form. Ethnic identity encompasses the perceptions of and personal affiliation with ethnic groups and cultures. Specifically, ethnic identity consists of: the perception of differences among ethnic groups; the feelings of attachment to and pride in one ethnic group and cultural heritage as opposed to others; and, at least where there are perceived physical differences between groups, the perception of prejudice and discrimination against one's own ethnic group. The dimension of ethnic identity is illustrated in depth with case study data collected during the Chicano research.

Abstract:We give a simple geometric argument to derive in a common manner orthospectrum identities of Basmajian and Bridgeman. Our method also considerably simplifies the determination of the summands in these identities. For example, for every odd integer n, there is a rational function q_n of degree 2(n-2) so that if M is a compact hyperbolic manifold of dimension n with totally geodesic boundary S, there is an identity \chi(S) = \sum_i q_n(e^{l_i}) where the sum is taken over the orthospectrum of M. When n=3, this has the explicit form \sum_i 1/(e^{2l_i}-1) = -\chi(S)/4.

Abstract:Language identity, an understudied factor, can influence isolation and discrimination, leading to disparities in well-being and mental health among immigrants. This study aims to investigate the role of language identity on structural racism and discrimination among 1.5 generation Asian/Asian American immigrants in a diverse U.S. state. We developed a three-step sequential approach: Stage 1—qualitative analysis (1A, focus group discussion; 1B, in-depth interviews); Stage 2—quantitative analysis (2A, language identity measurement scale; 2B, cross-sectional online survey; 2C, multivariate multiple linear regression); Stage 3—another round of qualitative analysis (3A, follow-up in-depth chronological interviews). Therefore, this study will contribute to the field by introducing a novel three-step mixed methods approach, marking a notable improvement over conventional explanatory or exploratory sequential designs.

Abstract:This paper describes an adult ESL student learning English in Abram Friedman Occupational center, which locates in downtown Los Angeles. The contexts of the community, school, classroom, and main basic information of my case study student will be illustrated at beginning and the theoretical focus of this paper is: Identity. Based on different identities occur in various situations, student’s motivation, investment, resistance, affective filter, BICS and CALP development towards English learning will be carefully analyzed. The evidence and data of this analysis paper are collected from weekly observation, case study student’s class work, and interviews towards my case study student and her English teacher. Three sub claims with examples and evidence will be developed under the main concept: Identity, which will carefully explain how identity affects her second language development and progress. Finally, specific recommendations to student in order to extend and deepen the advantages and impede the disadvantages from her identities will be provided. Last but not least, personal reflection on this case study experience will be given.
