Abstract:We construct a method to supersymmetrize higher kinetic terms and apply it to the baby Skyrme model. We find that there exist N=1 supersymmetric extensions for baby Skyrme models with arbitrary potential.

Abstract:A bstract We continue the investigation of supersymmetric extensions of baby Skyrme models in d = 2 + 1 dimensions. In a first step, we show that the CP(1) form of the baby Skyrme model allows for the same N = 1 SUSY extension as its O(3) formulation. Then we construct the N = 1 SUSY extension of the gauged baby Skyrme model, i.e., the baby Skyrme model coupled to Maxwell electrodynamics. In a next step, we investigate the issue of N = 2 SUSY extensions of baby Skyrme models. We find that all gauged and ungauged submodels of the baby Skyrme model which support BPS soliton solutions allow for an N = 2 extension such that the BPS solutions are one-half BPS states (i.e., annihilated by one-half of the SUSY charges). In the course of our investigation, we also derive the general BPS equations for completely general N = 2 supersymmetric field theories of (both gauged and ungauged) chiral superfields, and apply them to the gauged nonlinear sigma model as a further, concrete example.

Topologically Stable BPS and Non-BPS States in Supersymmetric $\mathcal{N}=2$ Baby-Skyrme Model

Abstract:The supersymmetric baby-Skyrme model is an interesting field theoretical model, and its BPS states have been studied using the usual methods. Here, we propose a novel method to rigorously obtain both topologically stable BPS and non-BPS states in the $\mathcal{N}=2$ baby Skyrme Model. It is observed that the BPS states found using this novel method coincide with the BPS states found using the usual methods. However, we are also able to obtain the non-BPS states, which break all of the supersymmetry of the theory. Furthermore, there exists a one-parameter family of non-BPS solutions that are connected to the half-BPS solutions, where half of the supersymmetry is restored when the parameter is set to zero. The proposed method is very general, and we expect that it might be useful for investigating the topologically stable non-BPS states of other theories. Thus, this method could possibly have wide applications for the study of non-BPS states in supersymmetric theories.

Abstract:We consider a class of (2+1)-dimensional baby Skyrme models with potentials that have more than one vacuum. These potentials are generalizations of the old and new baby Skyrme models in that they involve a more complicated dependence on ϕ3 (V(ϕ3)⩾0). The boundary conditions are such that ϕ3 = 1 corresponds to the vacuum and ϕ3 = -1 at the position of each skyrmion. We find that when the potential vanishes at ϕ3 = -1 the configurations corresponding to the baby skyrmions lying `on top of each other' are the minima of the energy. However, when V(ϕ3 = -1)≠0 the lowest field configurations correspond to separated baby skyrmions. We determine the energy distributions for skyrmions of degrees between one and eight and discuss their geometrical shapes and binding energies. We also compare the two-skyrmion states for these potentials. Most of our work has been performed numerically with the model being formulated in terms of three real scalar fields (satisfying one constraint).

A supersymmetric SYK model with a curious low energy behavior

Abstract:We consider $\mathcal{N}$ = 2, 4 supersymmetric SYK models that have a peculiar low energy behavior, with the entropy going like $S = S_{0} + \text{(constant)}T^{a}$, where $a \neq 1$. The large $N$ equations for these models are a generalization of equations that have been previously studied as an unjustified truncation of the planar diagrams describing the BFSS matrix quantum mechanics or other related matrix models. Here we reanalyze these equations in order to better understand the low energy physics of these models. We find that the scalar fields develop large expectation values which explore the low energy valleys in the potential. The low energy physics is dominated by quadratic fluctuations around these values. These models were previously conjectured to have a spin glass phase. We did not find any evidence for this phase by using the usual diagnostics, such as searching for replica symmetry breaking solutions.

Abstract:We consider a baby--Skyrme model with Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction (DMI) and two types of potential terms. The model has a close connection with the vacuum functional of fermions coupled with $O(3)$ nonlinear $\bm{n}$-fields and with a constant $SU(2)$ gauge background. The energy functional is derived from the heat-kernel expansion for the fermion determinant. The model possesses normal skyrmions with topological charge $Q = 1$. The restricted version of the model also includes both the weak-compacton case (at the boundary, not continuously differentiable) and genuine-compacton case (continuously differentiable). The model consists of only the Skyrme term, and the DMI provides soliton solutions that are known as \textit{skyrmions without any potential}. The BPS equation in the supersymmetric soliton models implies that the impurity coupling is closely related to the DMI. Therefore, the effect of an exponentially localized DMI is also studied in the present model.

Abstract:We derive the Bogomolny decompositions (Bogomolny equations) for: full baby Skyrme model and for its restricted version (so called, pure baby Skyrme model), in (2+0) dimensions, by using so called, concept of strong necessary conditions. It turns out that Bogomolny decomposition can be derived for restricted baby Skyrme model for arbitrary form of the potential term, while for full baby Skyrme model, such derivation is possible only for some class of the potentials.

Abstract:We study a class of SYK models with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, described by $N$ fermions in chiral Fermi multiplets, as well as $\alpha N$ first-order bosons in chiral multiplets. The interactions are characterised by two integers $(p,q)$. We focus on the large $N$ and low energy limit of these models. Despite the presence of dynamical bosons, we find conformal behaviour akin to the standard SYK model. We use $\mathcal{I}$-extremization of a Witten index to study the supersymmetric solutions. In particular, we find an exact expression for the entropy, which matches the numerical solutions to the Schwinger-Dyson equations. We further solve the model both in the large $p$ and large $p,q$ limits. Numerically, we verify our analytical results and obtain estimates for the Schwarzian coupling in the near zero-temperature limit. We also study the low-lying spectrum of operators to determine the parameter ranges where the Schwarzian mode dominates the IR dynamics. Lastly, we study out-of-time-ordered correlators to show that the model is maximally chaotic.

Supersymmetry breaking in SYK and the black hole spectrum

Abstract:The spectrum and dynamics of near-extremal black holes are strongly modified by quantum effects at low temperatures. When the extremal limit does not preserve any supersymmetry, the density of states goes to zero at extremality and no extremal black holes remain. However, when the extremal limit is supersymmetric, a large microscopic degeneracy survives and there is a gap to the first excited black hole visible from gravity. In this article we study large $N$ quantum mechanical models where supersymmetry is explicitly broken, allowing us to interpolate between these two qualitatively different pictures. We propose and analyze deformations of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK models with such a pattern of (super)symmetry breaking which violates the $U(1)$ $R$-symmetry. These models feature a lifting of the BPS degeneracy and a closing of the spectral gap, and we further show that the large $N$ soft effective action is given by a modification of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ Schwarzian theory in which the $U(1)_R$ mode becomes massive.

Abstract:An N=1 supersymmetric extension of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider three-body model is constructed and its integrability is established. In particular, three functionally independent Grassmann-odd constants of the motion are given and their algebraic resolvability is proven. The supersymmetric generalization is used to build a novel integrable isospin extension of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider three-body system.

Abstract:We study the properties of soliton solutions in an analogue of the Skyrme model in 2+1 dimensions whose Lagrangian contains the Skyrme term and the mass term, but no usual kinetic term. The model admits a symmetry under area-preserving diffeomorphisms. We solve the dynamical equations of motion analytically for the case of spinning isolated baryon-type solitons. We take fully into account the induced deformation of the spinning Skyrmions and the consequent modification of its moment of inertia to give an analytical example of related numerical behavior found by Piette, Schroers, and Zakrzewski. We solve the equations of motion also for the case of an infinite, open string, and a closed annular string. In each case, the solitons are of finite extent, so called “compactons,” being exactly the vacuum outside a compact region. We end with indications on the scattering of baby Skyrmions, as well as some considerations as the properties of solitons on a curved space.

Abstract:We investigate for N = 1 supersymmetry (SUSY) the relation between a scalar supermultiplet of linear SUSY and a nonlinear (NL) SUSY model including apparently pathological higher derivaive terms of a Nambu-Goldstone (N-G) fermion besides the Volkov-Akulov (V-A) action. SUSY invariant relations with higher derivative terms of the N-G fermion, which connect the linear and NL SUSY models, are constructed at leading orders by heuristic arguments. We discuss a higher derivative action of the N-G fermion in the NL SUSY model, which apparently includes a (Weyl) ghost field. By using this relation, we also explicitly prove an equivalence between the standard NL SUSY V-A model and our NL SUSY model with the pathological higher derivatives as an example with respect to the universality of NL SUSY actions with the N-G fermion.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a semi-standard Young tableau (SSYT) approach to construct a basis of non-factorizable superamplitudes in N = 1 massless supersymmetry. This amplitude basis can be directly translated to a basis for higher dimensional supersymmetric operators, yielding both the number of independent operators and their form. We deal with distinguishable (massless) chiral/vector superfields at first, then generalize the result to the indistinguishable case. Finally, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this method compared to the previously studied Hilbert series approach.

Baby skyrmion crystals stabilized by vector mesons

Abstract:In this letter we study soliton crystals in the $(2+1)$-dimensional analogue model of the $(3+1)$-dimensional Adkins--Nappi model of nuclear physics. The baby $\omega$-Skyrme model studied here is an $O(3)$ nonlinear $\sigma$ model coupled to a massive vector meson, the $\omega$-meson. Using recently developed methods in the $(3+1)$-dimensional $\omega$-Skyrme model we are able to construct soliton crystals in this $(2+1)$-dimensional baby $\omega$-Skyrme model. The resulting crystals form a hexagonal lattice structure and are qualitatively and quantitatively similar to crystals observed in the standard baby Skyrme model.

Abstract:We study the supersymmetric extensions of the Harry Dym hierarchy of equations. We obtain the susy-B extension, the doubly susy-B extension as well as the N=1 and the N=2 supersymmetric extensions for this system. The N=2 supersymmetric extension is particularly interesting, since it leads to new classical integrable systems in the bosonic limit. We prove the integrability of these systems through the bi-Hamiltonian formulation of integrable models and through the Lax description. We also discuss the supersymmetric extension of the Hunter-Zheng equation which belongs to the Harry Dym hierarchy of equations.

Abstract:We prove that three-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory is finite to all loop orders. In general this leaves open the possibility that different regularization methods lead to different finite effective actions. We show that in this model dimensional regularization and regularization by dimensional reduction yield the same effective action. Consequently, the superfield approach preserves BRS invariance for this model.

New Massive JT Multi-Gravity and N-Replica of SYK Models

Abstract:We study a series of powerful correspondences among new multi-gravity extensions of the Jackiw-Teitelboim model, multi-SYK models and multi-Schwarzian quantum mechanics, in the $\rm{(A)dS_{2}/CFT}$ arena. Deploying a $BF$-like formulation of the model, we discuss the counting of the degrees of freedom for some specific classes of multi-gravity potentials, and unveil connections among a variety of apparently different models. Quantization of multi-gravity models can be then achieved from both the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal, the SYK partition function and the spin-foam approaches. We comment on the SYK quantization procedure, and deepen in the appendix the quantization scheme naturally achieved in the $BF$ framework. The new multi-gravity theory hence recovered presents intriguing applications for analogue gravitational models developed for condensed matter physics, including graphene, endowed with defects and high intensity magnetic fields.
Non-Abelian R-symmetries in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry

Abstract:We investigate non-Abelian R-symmetries in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theory, where fields may transform under the R-symmetry in representations with dimension higher than one. While a continuous non-Abelian R-symmetry can always be decomposed to a $U(1)$ R-symmetry and non-R symmetries, there are non-trivial discrete non-Abelian R-symmetries that do not admit such a decomposition, and effective R-charges cannot be defined in such models. Previous results on sufficient conditions for R-symmetric supersymmetric vacua in Wess-Zumino models still hold, and do not depend on fields in representations of dimension greater than one. However, fields in higher-dimensional representations enter the sufficient conditions for supersymmetric vacua that break R-symmetry, but it is difficult to identify the independent variables which can be used to solve the F-flatness equation in this case, unless other conditions are fulfilled. We present examples with discrete non-Abelian R-symmetries of the lowest order in this case.
