Abstract:The study reports photometric and spectroscopic observations of two recently recognised contact binary systems. Both systems show total eclipses and analysis of the light curves indicate both have a very low mass ratios of less than 0.3. We derive absolute parameters from colour and distance based calibrations and show that although both have low mass ratios they are likely to be in a stable orbit and unlikely to merge. In other respects both systems have characteristics similar to other contact binaries with the secondary larger and brighter than main sequence counterparts and we also find that the secondary is considerably denser than the primary in both systems.

Abstract:New BVR light curves of the eclipsing binary system NSV 5904 have been constructed based on CCD observations obtained using 1.88-m telescope of Kottamia observatory during the phase of telescope testing and adjusting its optical quality on May, 2009. New times of minima and epoch have been determined from these light curves. Using the Binary Maker 3.0 (BM3) package, a preliminary determination of the photometric orbital and physical parameters of NSV 5904 are given.

Abstract:We present the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of four W UMa binaries J015829.5+260333 (hereinafter as J0158), J030505.1+293443 (hereinafter as J0305), J102211.7+310022 (hereinafter as J1022) and KW Psc. The VRcIc band photometric observations are carried out with the 1.3-m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope. For low resolution spectroscopy, we used 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope as well as the archival data from 4-m LAMOST survey. The systems J0158 and J0305 show a period increase rate of 5.26(+/-1.72)x10^-7 days/yr and 1.78(+/-1.52)x10^-6 days/yr, respectively. The period of J1022 is found to be decreasing with a rate of 4.22(+/-1.67)x10^-6 days/yr. The period analysis of KW Psc displays no change in its period. PHOEBE package is used for the light curve modeling and basic parameters are evaluated with the help of GAIA parallax. The asymmetry of light curves is explained with the assumption of cool spots at specific positions on one of the components of the system. On the basis of temperatures, mass ratios, fill-out factors and periods, the system J1022 is identified as W-subtype systems while the others show some mixed properties. To probe the chromospheric activities in these W UMa binaries, their spectra are compared with the known inactive stars spectra. The comparison shows emission in H\alpha, H\beta and CaII. To understand the evolutionary status of these systems, the components are drawn in mass-radius and mass-luminosity planes with other well characterized binary systems. The secondary components of all the systems are away from ZAMS which indicates that secondary is more evolved than the primary component.

Abstract:Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: TZ Boo, VW Boo, EL Boo, VZ CVn, GK Cep, RW Com, V2610 Oph, V1387 Ori, AU Ser, and FT UMa. Our spectroscopy revealed two quadruple systems, TZ Boo and V2610 Oph, while three stars showing small photometric amplitudes, EL Boo, V1387 Ori, and FT UMa, were found to be triple systems. GK Cep is close binary with a faint third component. While most of the studied eclipsing systems are contact binaries, VZ CVn and GK Cep are detached or semi-detached double-lined binaries, and EL Boo, V1387 Ori and FT UMa are close binaries of uncertain binary type. The large fraction of triple and quadruple systems found in this sample supports the hypothesis of formation of close binaries in multiple stellar systems; it also demonstrates that low photometric amplitude binaries are a fertile ground for further discoveries of multiple systems.

Abstract:Real Time Relativity is a computer program that lets students fly at relativistic speeds though a simulated world populated with planets, clocks, and buildings. The counterintuitive and spectacular optical effects of relativity are prominent, while systematic exploration of the simulation allows the user to discover relativistic effects such as length contraction and the relativity of simultaneity. We report on the physics and technology underpinning the simulation, and our experience using it for teaching special relativity to first year university students.

Abstract:Abstract The light curve analyses and orbital period variations for two W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) binary stars, LS Del and V997 Cyg, were presented in this work which was conducted in the frame of the Binary Systems of South and North (BSN) Project. Ground-based photometric observations were performed at two observatories in France. We used TESS (The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) data for extracting times of minima and light curve analysis of the target systems. The O-C diagram for both systems displays a parabolic trend. LS Del and V997 Cyg's orbital periods are increasing at a rate of $dP/dt= 7.20\times10^{-08}$ $d\ yr^{-1}$ and $dP/dt= 2.54\times10^{-08}$ $d\ yr^{-1}$, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the mass is being transferred from the less massive star to the more massive component with a rate of $dM/dt=-1.96\times10^{-7}$ $M_\odot$ $yr^{-1}$ for LS Del system, and $dM/dt=-3.83\times10^{-7}$ $M_\odot$ $yr^{-1}$ for V997 Cyg. The parameters of the third possible object in the system were also considered. The PHysics Of Eclipsing BinariEs (PHOEBE) Python code was used to analyze the light curves. The light curve solutions needed a cold starspot due to the asymmetry in the LS Del system's light curve maxima. The mass ratio, fill-out factor, and star temperature all indicate that both systems are contact binary types in this investigation. Two methods were used to estimate the absolute parameters of the systems: one method used the parallax of Gaia Data Release 3 (EDR3), and the other used a $P-M$ relationship. The positions of the systems were also depicted on the $M-L$, $M-R$, $q-L_{ratio}$, and $logM_{tot}-logJ_0$ diagrams.

Abstract:We present BVR C +TESS differential photometry of an eclipsing binary system NSVS 2910034. A period analysis reveals unusual variations that are inconsistent with systemic orbital period changes and may be due to surface activity. The best fit models are consistent with a W-type W UMa overcontact binary, consisting of a less massive G7 spectral type star and a more massive K1 spectral type star. An O’Connell effect is present and analyzed. The best fit model represents a very large hot spot that may indicate significant chromospheric activity across a large portion of the stellar surface of the K star.

Abstract:We carried out photometric and low-resolution spectral observations of six eclipsing ultrashort-period binaries with main-sequence (MS)components. The light-curve solutions of the Rozhen observations show that all targets are overcontact systems. We found a well-defined empirical relation between period and semi-major axis for the short-period binaries and used it for estimation of the global parameters of the targets. Our results revealed that NSVS 925605 is quite an interesting target: (i) it is one of a few contact binaries with M components; (ii) it exhibits high activity (emission in the Hα line, X-ray emission, large cool spots, non-Planck energy distribution); (iii) its components differ in temperature by 700 K. All the appearances of high magnetic activity and the huge fill-out factor (0.7) of NSVS 925605 may be a precursor of the predicted merging of close magnetic binaries. Another unusual binary is NSVS 2700153, which reveals considerable long-term variability.

A New Look at the YY CrB Binary System

Abstract:This study presented a new analysis for the TESS-observed W Ursae Majoris (W UMa) binary star YY Coronea Borealis (YY CrB). The light curve was analyzed by the PHysics Of Eclipsing BinariEs (PHOEBE) Python version together with the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. The light curve solutions required a hot spot and l3. New eclipse times from the TESS observations were extracted, and the O-C curve of primary and secondary minima showed an anti-correlated manner. In order to study the O-C curve of minima, minima times between 1991 and 2023 were collected. This investigation reported a new linear ephemeris and by fitting a quadratic function to the O-C curve of minima, calculated the orbital period rate of \mathop P\limits^.\approx 5.786*{10^{-8}} day/year. Assuming mass conservation, a mass exchange rate of \mathop{M_2}\limits^.=2.472*{10^{-8}} calculated from the more massive component to the less massive one. Then, by using the light travel time function, the possible third body was determined in the binary and derived the mass of the third body as 0.498M_Sun with a period of \simeq 7351.018 days. The O-C curve analysis and the quantity of mass indicate that the presence of a third body is unlikely. This binary is expected to evolve into a broken-contact phase and is a good case to support the thermal relaxation oscillation model.

Abstract:We present the results of spectral observations and consequent analysis of six long-period double-lined eclipsing binaries (DLEBs) with main-sequence (MS) components from a sample formed with the aim of testing the ''mass–luminosity'' relation (MLR) for stars in the mass range. We analyzed all the obtained spectra using a technique that allows one to reveal the binary nature of the system and determine and for each component, as well as the system metallicity [Fe/H] and line-of-sight extinction . We computed the absolute parameters of the systems under consideration. An analysis of the obtained spectra shows that for three of the six objects (V1156 Cyg, EU Gem and V733 Per) we can clearly establish their binary nature and determine the spectral type and class for each component. Both components of the V733 Per system have already left the MS, and therefore the system must be excluded from our sample, whereas studies of V1156 Cyg and EU Gem should continue. OT And did not demonstrate a binary spectrum, however, the main component of the system is a hot A6 V star, and therefore, OT And should remain in our sample. We also revealed no binarity in the IM Del and LX Gem systems. Their brighter components turned out to be a cool giant and a supergiant, and these systems should be excluded from the sample based on the results of our analysis. We used the same technique to analyze the two spectra obtained for systems EU Gem and LX Gem using LAMOST. We have shown that the parameters determined from LAMOST spectra are in good agreement with the parameters determined for spectra obtained at the Caucasian Mountain Observatory (CMO) of SAI MSU. Our analysis allowed us to plot a first approximation of the V1156 Cyg velocity curves and show that the cool component in this system has a larger mass.

Abstract:Photometric observations were made with standard filters in four observatories for 10 contact binary systems. We analyzed the orbital period variations of the systems and found that six of them show long-term changes. The increase in the orbital period of the J07, N65, and PU Vir systems is caused by mass transfer, and the reduction in the orbital period of the J05, LO Psc, and N49 systems is caused by the combination of angular momentum loss and mass transfer. The first light-curve analysis was performed with the PHysics Of Eclipsing BinariEs Python code and Markov Chain Monte Carlo. We discussed the accuracy of photometric mass ratio estimates for contact binary systems with total and partial eclipses compared to spectroscopic results. We also compared our mass ratio findings to a recent method that estimates mass ratios from the light curve's third derivative. Then, we also discussed this new mass ratio estimate method for photometric data. The systems' positions were displayed in 18 empirical parameter relationships. According to the light-curve analysis and estimation of absolute parameters, systems BE Mus, J07, J08, N49, and N65 are A subtypes, and the others are W subtypes.

Characterization of Eclipsing Binary System EPIC 211982753

Abstract:We present the physical parameters of an eclipsing binary system EPIC 211982753 derived through photometric and radial velocity data modeling. We make use of photometric data from NASA's K2 mission, ASAS-SN, and 1.3-m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT) while spectroscopic data have been acquired from the HERMES spectrograph at the 1.2-m Mercator telescope. The linear ephemeris for the system is updated using the K2 mission data. The synthetic light curve and radial velocity curves are generated with the help of eclipsing binary modeling package PHOEBE 1.0. The masses of primary and secondary components are determined as 1.64 $\pm$0.02 and 1.55 $\pm$0.01 $M_{\odot}$, respectively. The radius for primary and secondary components are estimated as 1.73 $\pm$0.02 and 1.47 $\pm$0.02 $R_{\odot}$, respectively. The distance of the system is calculated as 238 $\pm$ 4 pc. The eclipsing binary is found to be a total eclipsing system with a high mass ratio of q=0.94.

Three Ultra-short Period Contact Eclipsing Binary Systems Mined from Massive Astronomical Surveys

Abstract:We present the photometric analysis of three ultra-short period total eclipsing binaries in contact configuration, CRTS_J172718.0+431624, OGLE-BLG-ECL-000104, and OGLE-BLG-ECL-000012, mined from massive astronomical surveys. Using the available archival light curves (LCs) from Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV), Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Catalina Sky Survey (CSS) in different passbands and new multi-band photometric observations with the 2.3 m Aristarchos telescope at Helmos Observatory, their relative physical parameters were derived. We explored the parameter space by using PIKAIA genetic algorithm optimizer. The best photometric solution and error budget estimation was adopted for each system through MCMC sampling of the global optimum. The approximate absolute parameters were derived for each contact system adopting an empirical mass-luminosity relation. All three systems have a mass ratio lower than 0.5. The exchange between primary and secondary depths of CRTS_J172718.0+431624 during the years 2016-2022 may be due to spot activity. In addition, we present a detailed analysis of the first well characterized shortest period contact eclipsing binary with total eclipses known so far (OGLE-BLG-ECL-000104). Thanks to VVV and OGLE LCs, new distances were derived for OGLE-BLG-ECL-000104 and OGLE-BLG-ECL-000012 using empirical period-luminosity relations. The origin and evolutionary status of all three ultra-short period contact binaries are thoroughly discussed in the context of the detached-binary formation channel.

eRASSUJ060839.5-704014: A double degenerate ultra-compact binary in the direction of the LMC

Abstract:Context. During four all-sky surveys (eRASS1--4), eROSITA, the soft X-ray instrument aboard Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) detected a new supersoft X-ray source, eRASSU J060839.5-704014, in the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Methods. We arranged follow-up observations in the X-ray and optical wavelengths and further searched in archival observations to reveal the nature of the object. Results. We discover pulsations at ~374 s with a pulse profile consistent with 100% modulation. We identify two other periodicities in the eROSITA data, which we establish as aliases due to the sampling of the eROSITA light curve. We identify a multi-wavelength counterpart to the X-ray source in UVW1 and g, r, i, and z images obtained by the optical/UV monitor on XMM-Newton and the Dark Energy Camera at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The timing and spectral characteristics of the source are consistent with a double degenerate ultra-compact binary system in the foreground of the LMC. eRASSU J060839.5-704014 belongs to a rare class of AM CVns, which are important to study in the context of progenitors of SN Ia and for persistent gravitational wave detection. Conclusions. We identify eRASSU J060839.5-704014 as a new double degenerate ultra-compact binary located in the foreground of the LMC.

ULTRACAM photometry of the eclipsing cataclysmic variables XZ Eri and DV UMa

Abstract:We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the faint eclipsing cataclysmic variables XZ Eri and DV UMa. We determine the system parameters through two techniques: first, timings of the eclipse contact phases of the white dwarf and bright-spot using the derivative of the light curve; and secondly, a parameterized model of the eclipse fitted to the observed light curve by chi-squared minimisation. For both objects, we prefer the latter method, as it is less affected by photon noise and rapid flickering. For XZ Eri we obtain a mass ratio q = 0.1098 +/- 0.0017 and an orbital inclination i = 80.16 +/- 0.09 degrees. For DV UMa we derive figures of q = 0.1506 +/- 0.0009 and i = 84.24 +/- 0.07 degrees. The secondary star in XZ Eri has a very low mass Mr/Msun = 0.0842 +/- 0.0024, placing it close to the upper limit on the mass of a brown dwarf.

Abstract:In this study, we present a detailed photometric analysis of two short-period eclipsing binary systems, and . The photometric data for our analysis was obtained from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) catalogue at filters and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) database. Based on our analysis, we classify both systems as W Uma-type binaries, with A-subtype. To estimate the physical and geometrical parameters of these systems, we employ the PHEOBE code. This results in two totally eclipsing systems with degree of extbf{inclination} (i) of around 68 and 88 { }, respectively. The indicates a low mass ratio ( ) binary with =0.107, while exhibits a moderate value of 0.545. A cool spot on the surface of the secondary extbf{star} of with a 30\% cooler atmosphere of the surrounding surface is detected. This is explained by extbf{magnetic activity} on the surface of . Our findings reveal overcontact fill-out factor with 54 and 52\% for and , respectively. In addition to the light curve modeling, we calculate new epochs and ephemeris for both binary systems. The absolute parameters for the two systems are estimated. Eventually, the systems' evolutionary status along ZAMS and TAMS are discussed.

Abstract:We presented the first photometric analysis of the V1961 Cyg and V0890 Lyr binary systems. We observed and analyzed these systems at an observatory in France as part of the Binary Systems of South and North (BSN) Project. We extracted and collected the times of minima from the observations and literature and presented a new ephemeris for each system. Due to the few observations about these systems over the years, both O-C diagrams were fitted linearly. The PHysics Of Eclipsing BinariEs (PHOEBE) Python code and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method were used to light curve solutions. The light curve solution required a cold starspot on the hotter component in the V1961 Cyg binary system. We compared and have close agreements between our mass ratios' results from the light curve analysis processes and a new method based on the light curve derivative. We estimated the absolute parameters using an empirical relationship between the semi-major axis and orbital period for contact binary systems. The results show V1961 Cyg and V0890 Lyr are W-type contact binary systems. We displayed stars and systems' positions in the M-L, M-R, and logM_{tot}-logJ_0 diagrams. We also presented a new relationship between mass ratio and luminosity ratio.
