Abstract:We present the UV photometry of the old open cluster NGC188 obtained using images acquired with Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on board the ASTROSAT satellite, in two far-UV (FUV) and one near-UV (NUV) filters. UVIT data is utilised in combination with optical photometric data to construct the optical and UV colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). In the FUV images, we detect only hot and bright blue straggler stars (BSSs), one hot subdwarf, and one white dwarf (WD) candidate. In the NUV images, we detect members up to a faintness limit of ~22 mag including 21 BSSs, 2 yellow straggler stars (YSSs), and one WD candidate. This study presents the first NUV-optical CMDs, and are overlaid with updated BaSTI-IAC isochrones and WD cooling sequence, which are found to fit well to the observed CMDs. We use spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting to estimate the effective temperatures, radii, and luminosities of the UV-bright stars. We find the cluster to have an HB population with three stars (Teff = 4750 - 21000 K). We also detect two yellow straggler stars, with one of them with UV excess connected to its binarity and X-ray emission.

Abstract:We present the study of four FUV stars in the field of open cluster NGC 2420 using the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) mounted on AstroSat. The three stars 525, 527, and 560 are members, while star 646 is a non-member of the cluster. To characterize and determine the parameters of these stars, multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are analyzed using UV, optical, and IR data sets. For all four FUV bright stars, a two-component SED model fits well. Our findings indicate that two stars, 525 and 560, are binary BSS systems. These binary BSS systems may have formed in a tertiary system due to mass transfer from an evolved outer tertiary companion. Star 527 is a binary system of a BSS and an extremely low-mass (ELM) white dwarf, while Star 646 is a binary system of a horizontal branch star and an ELM white dwarf. The effective temperatures, radii, luminosities and masses of the two ELMs are (10250, 11500) K, (0.42, 0.12) Rsun, (1.61, 0.23) Lsun, and (0.186, 0.170) Msun, respectively. The star 527 could be a post-mass transfer system and may have originated through the Case A/B mass transfer process in a low-density environment. The cooling age of the ELMs is < 1 Myr, indicating that they have only recently formed.

Multicolor Photoelectric WBVR-Observations of the CBS HZ~Her=Her~X-1 in 1986--1988

Abstract:We present results of four-color WBVR- photoelectric observations of the close binary HZ~Her=HER~X-1 in 1986--1988. As a rule, the duration of the observations exceeded two 35-day X-ray orbital periods in the 1986--1988 observing seasons. The accuracy and length of the photoelectric observations facilitated multi-faceted studies, which enabled us to define several fine photometric effects in the light curves of the binary more precisely and attempt to interpret them in a model for the matter flow from the optical component to the accretion disk around the neutron star. This model provides a satisfactory explanation for the inhomogeneity of the gas flow and "hot spot", as well as the existence of distinct "splashes" moving in their own Keplerian orbits around the outer parts of the Keplerian disk. We present series of light curves for all the observing seasons, as well as color--color diagrams that reflect the physics of various photometric effects. The transformation coefficients for each of the instrumental systems for the three observatories at which the observations were carried out are given. Atmospheric extinction was taken into account during multi-color observations of the object, with subsequent correction for atmospheric effects with accuracies ranging from 0.003^m to 0.005^m for air masses up to M(z)=2.

Abstract:The new B and V photoelectric observations of the beta Lyrae eclipsing binary DO Cas were obtained on 6 nights form December 2000 to January 2001. The observations were made at the Biruni Observatory, Shiraz, Iran and the light curves are analyzed using the Wilson light curve synthesis and differential correction code. So, the relative surface luminosities, new light elements, and new orbital elements have been obtained, and from times of minimum the period is improved. With these and previously published times, the period variation is studied and a constant period is approved, though some authors has mentioned some variations. The solutions of the light curves suggest that DO Cas is a contact binary.

Abstract:Abstract The early-type star γ Cas illuminates the reflection nebulae IC 59 and IC 63, creating two photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). Uncertainties about the distances to the nebulae and the resulting uncertainty about the density of the radiation fields incident on their surfaces have hampered the study of these PDRs during the past three decades. We employed far-UV – optical nebula – star colour differences of dust-scattered light to infer the locations of the nebulae relative to the plane of the sky containing γ Cas, finding IC 63 to be positioned behind the star and IC 59 in front of the star. To obtain the linear distances of the nebulae relative to γ Cas, we fit far-infrared archival Herschel flux data for IC 59 and IC 63 with modified blackbody (MBB) curves and relate the resulting dust temperatures with the luminosity of γ Cas, yielding approximate distances of 4.15 pc for IC 59 and 2.3 pc for IC 63. With these distances, using updated far-UV flux data in the 6 eV – 13.6 eV range for γ Cas with two recent determinations of the interstellar extinction for γ Cas, we estimate that the far-UV radiation density at the surface of IC 63 takes on values of G0 = 58 or G0 = 38 with respective values for E(B-V) for γ Cas of 0.08 and 0.04 mag. This is a substantial reduction from the range 150 ≤ G0 ≤ 650 used for IC 63 during the past three decades. The corresponding, even lower new values for IC 59 are G0 = 18 and G0 = 12.

Abstract:The "Bonn University Simultaneous CAmera" (BUSCA) is a CCD camera system which allows simultaneous direct imaging of the same sky area in four colors. The optics are designed for an f/8 beam and four 4Kx4K CCDs with 15m pixels covering a field of view of 12 arcmin x 12 arcmin at a 2m class telescope. In September 1998 BUSCA has seen "First Light". The instrument is based on three dichroic beam splitters which separate optical wavelength bands such (at 430nm, 540nm, 730nm) that standard astronomical intermediate-band filter systems can be used. The dichroics are made of plane-parallel glass plates mounted at an angle of 45 degrees. Astigmatism in the transmitted beams (f/8) is completely cancelled by identical plane-parallel glass plates of suitable orientation. BUSCA offers new perspectives in astronomical multicolor photometry: i) The broadband spectral properties (e.g. color indices) of astronomical objects in the optical can be determined with high reliability even in non-photometric atmospheric conditions. ii) Precious observing time is used very efficiently. iii) With the large field of view, extended objects like globular and open star clusters or galaxies are covered in a single exposure. iv) Each exposure results in a complete data set.

Far Ultraviolet Emission in the A2597 and A2204 Brightest Cluster Galaxies

Abstract:We use the Hubble Space Telescope ACS/SBC and Very Large Telescope FORS cameras to observe the Brightest Cluster Galaxies in Abell 2597 and Abell 2204 in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) F150LP and optical U, B, V, R, I Bessel filters. The FUV and U band emission is enhanced in bright, filamentary structures surrounding the BCG nuclei. These filaments can be traced out to 20 kpc from the nuclei in the FUV. Excess FUV and U band light is determined by removing emission due to the underlying old stellar population and mapped with 1 arcsec spatial resolution over the central 20 kpc regions of both galaxies. We find the FUV and U excess emission to be spatially coincident and a stellar interpretation requires the existence of a significant amount of 10000-50000 K stars. Correcting for nebular continuum emission and dust intrinsic to the BCG further increases the FUV to U band emission ratio and implies that stars alone may not suffice to explain the observations. However, lack of detailed information on the gas and dust distribution and extinction law in these systems prevents us from ruling out a purely stellar origin. Non-stellar processes, such as the central AGN, Scattering, Synchrotron and Bremsstrahlung emission are investigated and found to not be able to explain the FUV and U band measurements in A2597. Contributions from non-thermal processes not treated here should be investigated. Comparing the FUV emission to the optical H-alpha line emitting nebula shows good agreement on kpc-scales in both A2597 and A2204. In concordance with an earlier investigation by O'Dea et al. (2004) we find that O-stars can account for the ionising photons necessary to explain the observed H-alpha line emission.

Abstract:The classical Cepheids CE Cas A, CE Cas B, CF Cas, and CG Cas are likely members of the binary open cluster comprising NGC 7790 and Berkeley 58. The clusters are of comparable age and in close proximity, as deduced from differentially dereddened $UuB_PBVGR_P$ photometry, and Cepheid period-age relations. Gaia DR3 astrometric and spectroscopic solutions for the clusters are likewise consistent. Conversely, the seemingly adjacent open cluster NGC 7788 is substantially younger and less distant.

A radical transition in the post-main-sequence system U Equulei

Abstract:U Equ is an unusual maser-hosting IR source discovered in the 1990s. It was tentatively classified as a post-AGB star with a unique optical spectrum displaying rare emission and absorption features from molecular gas. In 2022, we discovered that its optical spectrum has drastically changed. Methods: Optical high-resolution spectra of U Equ from SALT are supplemented by archival data and NIR photometry from NOT. New spectral line observations with the Effelsberg telescope and ALMA are presented. Results: No circumstellar molecular features are present in the contemporary optical spectra of U Equ. Non-photospheric absorption and emission from neutral and ionized species dominate the current spectrum. Some of the observed features indicate an outflow with a terminal velocity of 215 km\s. The H\&K lines of [Ca II] indicate a photosphere of spectral type F. Photometric measurements show that the source has been monotonically increasing its optical and NIR fluxes since the beginning of this century. SEDs at different epochs show dusty circumstellar material arranged in a highly-inclined disk. At a distance of 4 kpc, the source's luminosity is 10$^4$ L$_{\odot}$. Conclusions: The object has changed considerably in the last three decades, either due to geometrical reconfiguration of the circumstellar medium, evolutionary changes in the central star, or owing to an accretion event that has started in the system very recently. Observationally, U Equ appears to resemble the Category 0 of disk-hosting post-AGB stars, especially the post-common envelope binary HD 101584. It is uncertain if the drastic spectral change and the associated optical/MIR rise in brightness are common in post-AGB stars but such a radical change may be related to the real-time onset of the evolution of the system into a planetary nebula. We find that the post-AGB star V576 Car has undergone a similar transformation as U Equ.

Photometric and Spectroscopic analysis of four contact binaries

Abstract:We present the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of four W UMa binaries J015829.5+260333 (hereinafter as J0158), J030505.1+293443 (hereinafter as J0305), J102211.7+310022 (hereinafter as J1022) and KW Psc. The VRcIc band photometric observations are carried out with the 1.3-m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope. For low resolution spectroscopy, we used 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope as well as the archival data from 4-m LAMOST survey. The systems J0158 and J0305 show a period increase rate of 5.26(+/-1.72)x10^-7 days/yr and 1.78(+/-1.52)x10^-6 days/yr, respectively. The period of J1022 is found to be decreasing with a rate of 4.22(+/-1.67)x10^-6 days/yr. The period analysis of KW Psc displays no change in its period. PHOEBE package is used for the light curve modeling and basic parameters are evaluated with the help of GAIA parallax. The asymmetry of light curves is explained with the assumption of cool spots at specific positions on one of the components of the system. On the basis of temperatures, mass ratios, fill-out factors and periods, the system J1022 is identified as W-subtype systems while the others show some mixed properties. To probe the chromospheric activities in these W UMa binaries, their spectra are compared with the known inactive stars spectra. The comparison shows emission in H\alpha, H\beta and CaII. To understand the evolutionary status of these systems, the components are drawn in mass-radius and mass-luminosity planes with other well characterized binary systems. The secondary components of all the systems are away from ZAMS which indicates that secondary is more evolved than the primary component.

Abstract:We present a photometric study of two new double-mode Cepheids, pulsating in the first and second overtones modes: V470 Cas and GSC 2901-00089. For the search of the double-mode variability, we used all available observations from the ROTSE-I/NSVS and SuperWASP online public archives. Our multicolour CCD observations in the B, V and R bands in Johnson's system confirm the double periodicity of these variables. We study period variations of the two stars; variations of the first overtone periods were reliably detected. In addition, we consider the Petersen diagram for the Galactic 1O/2O Cepheids.

A Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Survey of the Globular Cluster 47 Tuc

Abstract:We present preliminary results from a FUV spectroscopic and photometric survey of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. Our main goal is to either confirm or rule out the existence of a large population of CVs in the core of this cluster. We have so far identified approximately 425 FUV sources, most of which are probably hot, young WDs. However, we have also found approximately 30 FUV sources whose position in a FUV-optical color-magnitude diagram makes them strong CV candidates. If most or all of these objects are eventually confirmed as CVs, the large CV population predicted by tidal capture theory has finally been found. Our data has also allowed us to resolve the long-standing puzzle surrounding AKO 9, a UV-bright and highly variable 1.1 day binary system in 47 Tuc. AKO 9 is the brightest FUV source in our data and presents a blue FUV spectrum with strong CIV and HeII emission lines. Its spectrum is similar to that of the long-period, DN-type field CV GK Per. Based on this similarity and other evidence, we suggest that AKO 9 is a long-period CV in which mass-transfer is driven by the nuclear evolution of a sub-giant donor star.

Multicolor Photometry Of The Galaxies In The Central Region Of Abell 2634

Abstract:An optical photometric observation with the Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut multicolor system is carried out for the central region of the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 2634. From the 2K x 2K CCD images with 14 filters, which cover a range of wavelength from 3600 to 10000 Angstrom, 5572 sources are AZ, detected down to V similar to 20 mag in a field of 56' x 56' centered on this regular cluster of galaxies. As a result, we achieved the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of all sources detected. There are 178 previously known galaxies included in our observations, 147 of which have known radial velocities in the literature. After excluding the foreground and background galaxies, a sample of 124 known members is formed for an investigation of the SED properties. The comparison of observed SEDs of the early-type member galaxies with the template SEDs demonstrates the accuracy and reliability of our photometric measurements. Based on the knowledge of SED properties of member galaxies, we performed the selection of faint galaxies belonging to Abell 2634. It is well shown that the color-color diagrams are powerful in the star-galaxy separation. As a result, 359 faint galaxies are selected by their color features. The technique of photometric redshift and color-magnitude correlation for the early-type galaxies are applied for these faint galaxies, and a list of 74 faint member galaxies is achieved. On the basis of the newly generated sample of member galaxies, the spatial distribution and color-magnitude relation of the galaxies in the core region of Abell 2634 are discussed. There exists a tendency that the color index dispersion of the early-type members is larger for the outer region, which might reflect some clues about the environmental effect on the evolution of galaxies in a cluster.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The physics of the accelerating Universe (PAU) camera is an optical narrow band and broad band imaging instrument mounted at the prime focus of the William Herschel Telescope. We describe the image calibration procedure of the PAU survey data. We rely on an external photometric catalogue to calibrate our narrow band data using stars that have been observed by both data sets. We fit stellar templates to the stellar broad-band photometry of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and synthesize narrow band photometry that we compare to the PAUS narrow band data to determine their calibration. Consequently, the PAUS data are in the AB system as inherited from its reference calibrator. We do several tests to check the performance of the calibration. We find it self-consistent when comparing repeated observations of the same objects, with a good overall accuracy to the AB system which we estimate to be at the 2 per cent precision level and no significant trends as a function of narrow band filter or wavelength. Repeated observations allow us to build a spatial map of the illumination pattern of the system. We also check the wavelength dependence of the calibration comparing to stellar spectra. We find that using only blue stars reduces the effects of variations in the stellar template fitting to broad-band colours, improving the overall precision of the calibration to around 1 per cent and its wavelength uniformity. The photometric redshift performance obtained with the PAUS data attests to the validity of our calibration to reach the PAUS science goals.

A Far-Ultraviolet Survey of 47 Tucanae. I. Imaging

Abstract:We present results from the imaging portion of a far-ultraviolet (FUV) survey of the core of 47 Tucanae. We have detected 767 FUV sources, 527 of which have optical counterparts in archival HST/WFPC2 images of the same field. Most of our FUV sources are main-sequence (MS) turn-off stars near the detection limit of our survey. However, the FUV/optical color-magnitude diagram (CMD) also reveals 19 blue stragglers (BSs), 17 white dwarfs (WDs) and 16 cataclysmic variable (CV) candidates. The BSs lie on the extended cluster MS, and four of them are variable in the FUV data. The WDs occupy the top of the cluster cooling sequence, down to an effective temperature of T_{eff} \simeq 20,000 K. Our FUV source catalog probably contains many additional, cooler WDs without optical counterparts. Finally, the CV candidates are objects between the WD cooling track and the extended cluster MS. Four of the CV candidates are previously known or suspected cataclysmics. All of these are bright and variable in the FUV. Another CV candidate is associated with the semi-detached binary system V36 that was recently found by Albrow et al. (2001). V36 has an orbital period of 0.4 or 0.8 days, blue optical colors and is located within 1 arcsec of a Chandra x-ray source. A few of the remaining CV candidates may represent chance superpositions or SMC interlopers, but at least half are expected to be real cluster members with peculiar colors. However, only a few of these CV candidates are possible counterparts to Chandra x-ray sources. Thus it is not yet clear which, if any, of them are true CVs, rather than non-interacting MS/WD binaries or Helium WDs.

Abstract:New results from long-term optical photometric observations of the pre-main sequence star GM Cep from UX Orionis type are reported. During ongoing photometric monitoring of the GM Cep four deep minimums in brightness are observed. The collected multicolour photometric data shows the typical of UXor variables colour reversal during the minimums in brightness. Recent $BVRI$ photometric observations of GM Cep have been collected from November 2014 to October 2020.
