Abstract:New results from long-term optical photometric observations of the pre-main sequence star GM Cep from UX Orionis type are reported. During ongoing photometric monitoring of the GM Cep four deep minimums in brightness are observed. The collected multicolour photometric data shows the typical of UXor variables colour reversal during the minimums in brightness. Recent $BVRI$ photometric observations of GM Cep have been collected from November 2014 to October 2020.

Abstract:We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the faint eclipsing cataclysmic variables XZ Eri and DV UMa. We determine the system parameters through two techniques: first, timings of the eclipse contact phases of the white dwarf and bright-spot using the derivative of the light curve; and secondly, a parameterized model of the eclipse fitted to the observed light curve by chi-squared minimisation. For both objects, we prefer the latter method, as it is less affected by photon noise and rapid flickering. For XZ Eri we obtain a mass ratio q = 0.1098 +/- 0.0017 and an orbital inclination i = 80.16 +/- 0.09 degrees. For DV UMa we derive figures of q = 0.1506 +/- 0.0009 and i = 84.24 +/- 0.07 degrees. The secondary star in XZ Eri has a very low mass Mr/Msun = 0.0842 +/- 0.0024, placing it close to the upper limit on the mass of a brown dwarf.

Abstract:Classical Cepheids provide valuable insights into the evolution of stellar multiplicity among intermediate-mass stars. Here, we present a systematic investigation of single-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB1s) based on high-precision velocities measured by the VELOcities of CEpheids ( project. We detected ($29 $) SB1 systems among the Milky Way Cepheids in the first data release ($43 $) of which were not previously known to be SB1 systems. We determined 30 precise and tentative orbital solutions ($53 $) of which are reported for the first time. This large set of Cepheid orbits provides a detailed view of the eccentricity $e$ and orbital period distribution among evolved intermediate-mass stars, ranging from $e $ and $\,d. The orbital motion on timescales exceeding the 11 yr baseline was investigated using a template-fitting technique applied to literature data. Particularly interesting objects include a) R Cru, the Cepheid with the shortest orbital period in the Milky Way (sim 238\,d); b) ASAS J103158-5814.7, a short-period overtone Cepheid exhibiting time-dependent pulsation amplitudes as well as orbital motion; and c) 17 triple systems with outer visual companions, among other interesting objects. Most Cepheids (21/23) that exhibit evidence of a companion based on a proper motion anomaly are also spectroscopic binaries, whereas the remaining do not exhibit significant ($> 3 orbital radial velocity variations. quality flags, notably the renormalized unit weight error (RUWE), do not allow Cepheid binaries to be identified reliably although statistically the average RUWE of SB1 Cepheids is slightly higher than that of non-SB1 Cepheids. A comparison with photometric amplitudes in $G-$, $Bp$, and $Rp$ also does not allow one to identify spectroscopic binaries among the full sample, indicating that the photometric amplitudes in this wavelength range are not sufficiently informative of companion stars.

Abstract:The sudden lengthening of orbital period of VV Cep eclipsing binary by about 1% was observed in the last epoch. The mass transfer and/or mass loss are most possible explanations of this event. The photometric behaviour of AZ Cas, the cousin of VV Cep, suggests that the accretion can occur and could be important in this system, too.

Abstract:We present the first CCD observations of an eclipsing binary, ZTFJ015003.88+534734.1, which is a member in the open star cluster UBC 188. The observations were taken by the 1.88 m telescope at the Kottamia Astronomical Observatory (KAO) in SDSS griz bands. The latest version of the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) code was employed for photometric analysis and light curve modeling of the eclipsing binary. The results indicate that the binary system is in an over-contact configuration. The mass of the primary star (M1) is determined to be 1.293 M ⊙ , and the mass of the secondary star (M2) is directly derived from the system's estimated mass ratio (q= M2/M1) as 0.340 times the solar mass (M ⊙ ). We investigated the color-magnitude diagram and the membership probability of the open cluster UBC 188 using the Gaia DR3 data. We determined the membership probability of the eclipsing binary ZTFJ015003.88+534734.1 using the pyUPMASK algorithm and found that its membership probability is one.

Abstract:Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: TZ Boo, VW Boo, EL Boo, VZ CVn, GK Cep, RW Com, V2610 Oph, V1387 Ori, AU Ser, and FT UMa. Our spectroscopy revealed two quadruple systems, TZ Boo and V2610 Oph, while three stars showing small photometric amplitudes, EL Boo, V1387 Ori, and FT UMa, were found to be triple systems. GK Cep is close binary with a faint third component. While most of the studied eclipsing systems are contact binaries, VZ CVn and GK Cep are detached or semi-detached double-lined binaries, and EL Boo, V1387 Ori and FT UMa are close binaries of uncertain binary type. The large fraction of triple and quadruple systems found in this sample supports the hypothesis of formation of close binaries in multiple stellar systems; it also demonstrates that low photometric amplitude binaries are a fertile ground for further discoveries of multiple systems.

Abstract:We present results of four-color WBVR- photoelectric observations of the close binary HZ~Her=HER~X-1 in 1986--1988. As a rule, the duration of the observations exceeded two 35-day X-ray orbital periods in the 1986--1988 observing seasons. The accuracy and length of the photoelectric observations facilitated multi-faceted studies, which enabled us to define several fine photometric effects in the light curves of the binary more precisely and attempt to interpret them in a model for the matter flow from the optical component to the accretion disk around the neutron star. This model provides a satisfactory explanation for the inhomogeneity of the gas flow and "hot spot", as well as the existence of distinct "splashes" moving in their own Keplerian orbits around the outer parts of the Keplerian disk. We present series of light curves for all the observing seasons, as well as color--color diagrams that reflect the physics of various photometric effects. The transformation coefficients for each of the instrumental systems for the three observatories at which the observations were carried out are given. Atmospheric extinction was taken into account during multi-color observations of the object, with subsequent correction for atmospheric effects with accuracies ranging from 0.003^m to 0.005^m for air masses up to M(z)=2.

Spectroscopic Searches for Evolutionary Orbital Period Changes in WR+OB Binaries: The case of CQ Cep and CX Cep

Abstract:We present the results of spectroscopic observations of two eclipsing WR+OB-type systems - CQ Cep and CX Cep, performed in 2020-2023 with a low-resolution slit spectrograph TDS ($\lambda\lambda= 3660-7410$Å, $R = 1300-2500$) on 2.5-m telescope of the SAI MSU Caucasian Mountain Observatory. For CQ Cep, the radial velocity curves of a WN6 star are constructed, the problem of visibility of spectroscopic traces of an OB star is discussed and the components' mass ratio $q\sim 0.6$ is estimated. For CX Cep, the radial velocity curves are constructed for both the WN5 and O5 components enabling their masses and circular orbit elements to be refined. The comparison of the radial velocity curves of these systems obtained in different epochs allowed us to derive the orbital period change rate $\dot{P}$ by the spectroscopic method, which is found to be in good agreement with estimates obtained by comparing the moments of primary eclipse minima: $\dot{P} = -0.0151\pm0.0013$ s yr$^{-1}$ for CQ Cep and $\dot{P} = 0.054\pm0.009$ s yr$^{-1}$ for CX Cep. The prospects of applicability of the spectroscopic dynamical method for studying the orbital evolution of Galactic WR+OB binaries and related objects are considered. We also discuss the effect of finite sizes of stars with stellar wind mass loss in close binary systems on their orbital evolution.

Abstract:The classical Cepheids CE Cas A, CE Cas B, CF Cas, and CG Cas are likely members of the binary open cluster comprising NGC 7790 and Berkeley 58. The clusters are of comparable age and in close proximity, as deduced from differentially dereddened $UuB_PBVGR_P$ photometry, and Cepheid period-age relations. Gaia DR3 astrometric and spectroscopic solutions for the clusters are likewise consistent. Conversely, the seemingly adjacent open cluster NGC 7788 is substantially younger and less distant.

Abstract:Photoelectric UBV photometry and star counts are presented for the previously unstudied open cluster Collinder 236, supplemented by observations for stars near the Cepheid WZ Car. Collinder 236 is typical of groups associated with Cepheids, with an evolutionary age of (3.2 ± 1.1) × 107 yr, but it is 1944 ± 71 pc distant, only half the predicted distance to WZ Car. The cluster is reddened by E(B−V) ≃ 0.26, and has nuclear and coronal radii of rn≃ 2 arcmin (1.1 pc) and Rc≃ 8 arcmin (4.5 pc), respectively. The Cepheid is not a member of Collinder 236 on the basis of location beyond the cluster tidal radius and implied distance, but its space reddening can be established as E(B−V) = 0.268 ± 0.006 s.e. from five adjacent stars. Period changes in WZ Car studied with the aid of archival data are revised. The period of WZ Car is increasing, its rate of +8.27 ± 0.19 s yr−1 being consistent with a third crossing of the instability strip.

Abstract:We report the discovery of the relatively bright (V = 10.5 mag), doubly eclipsing 2+2 quadruple system CzeV1731. This is the third known system of its kind, in which the masses are determined for all four stars and both the inner and outer orbits are characterized. The inner eclipsing binaries are well-detached systems moving on circular orbits: pair A with period PA = 4.10843 d and pair B with PB = 4.67552 d. The inner binaries contain very similar components (q = 1.0), making the whole system a so-called double twin. The stars in pair B have slightly larger luminosities and masses and pair A shows deeper eclipses. All four components are main-sequence stars of F/G spectral type. The mutual orbit of the two pairs around the system barycenter has a period of about 34 yr and an eccentricity of about 0.38. However, further observations are needed to reveal the overall architecture of the whole system, including the mutual inclinations of all orbits. This is a promising target for interferometry to detect the double at about 59 mas and dMbol < 1 mag. (The RV and ETV data available via CDS)
Photometric and Spectroscopic analysis of four contact binaries

Abstract:We present the photometric and spectroscopic analysis of four W UMa binaries J015829.5+260333 (hereinafter as J0158), J030505.1+293443 (hereinafter as J0305), J102211.7+310022 (hereinafter as J1022) and KW Psc. The VRcIc band photometric observations are carried out with the 1.3-m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope. For low resolution spectroscopy, we used 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope as well as the archival data from 4-m LAMOST survey. The systems J0158 and J0305 show a period increase rate of 5.26(+/-1.72)x10^-7 days/yr and 1.78(+/-1.52)x10^-6 days/yr, respectively. The period of J1022 is found to be decreasing with a rate of 4.22(+/-1.67)x10^-6 days/yr. The period analysis of KW Psc displays no change in its period. PHOEBE package is used for the light curve modeling and basic parameters are evaluated with the help of GAIA parallax. The asymmetry of light curves is explained with the assumption of cool spots at specific positions on one of the components of the system. On the basis of temperatures, mass ratios, fill-out factors and periods, the system J1022 is identified as W-subtype systems while the others show some mixed properties. To probe the chromospheric activities in these W UMa binaries, their spectra are compared with the known inactive stars spectra. The comparison shows emission in H\alpha, H\beta and CaII. To understand the evolutionary status of these systems, the components are drawn in mass-radius and mass-luminosity planes with other well characterized binary systems. The secondary components of all the systems are away from ZAMS which indicates that secondary is more evolved than the primary component.

Abstract:We present the results of spectral observations and consequent analysis of six long-period double-lined eclipsing binaries (DLEBs) with main-sequence (MS) components from a sample formed with the aim of testing the ''mass–luminosity'' relation (MLR) for stars in the mass range. We analyzed all the obtained spectra using a technique that allows one to reveal the binary nature of the system and determine and for each component, as well as the system metallicity [Fe/H] and line-of-sight extinction . We computed the absolute parameters of the systems under consideration. An analysis of the obtained spectra shows that for three of the six objects (V1156 Cyg, EU Gem and V733 Per) we can clearly establish their binary nature and determine the spectral type and class for each component. Both components of the V733 Per system have already left the MS, and therefore the system must be excluded from our sample, whereas studies of V1156 Cyg and EU Gem should continue. OT And did not demonstrate a binary spectrum, however, the main component of the system is a hot A6 V star, and therefore, OT And should remain in our sample. We also revealed no binarity in the IM Del and LX Gem systems. Their brighter components turned out to be a cool giant and a supergiant, and these systems should be excluded from the sample based on the results of our analysis. We used the same technique to analyze the two spectra obtained for systems EU Gem and LX Gem using LAMOST. We have shown that the parameters determined from LAMOST spectra are in good agreement with the parameters determined for spectra obtained at the Caucasian Mountain Observatory (CMO) of SAI MSU. Our analysis allowed us to plot a first approximation of the V1156 Cyg velocity curves and show that the cool component in this system has a larger mass.

Discovery of the eclipse in the symbiotic binary Z Andromedae

Abstract:Our photometric observations of the symbiotic binary Z And during its recent (2000 -- 2003) active phase revealed a minimum in the U, B and V light curves (LC) at the position of the inferior conjunction of its cool component (the orbital phase 'phi' = 0). This fact and the behaviour of colour indices suggest that the minimum was due to the eclipse of the active hot object by the red giant. Physically plausible fit of the eclipse profile and a precise analysis of the spectral energy distribution (SED) in the ultraviolet continuum suggest a disk-like structure for the hot object during active phases. The present knowledge of fundamental parameters of the system limits the orbital inclination 'i' to 76 - 90 deg. The presence of the Rayleigh attenuated far-UV continuum at 'phi' around 0 during quiescent phase confirms the very high inclination of the Z And orbit.

Abstract:Real Time Relativity is a computer program that lets students fly at relativistic speeds though a simulated world populated with planets, clocks, and buildings. The counterintuitive and spectacular optical effects of relativity are prominent, while systematic exploration of the simulation allows the user to discover relativistic effects such as length contraction and the relativity of simultaneity. We report on the physics and technology underpinning the simulation, and our experience using it for teaching special relativity to first year university students.

Abstract:New high-quality CCD photometric light curves for the W UMa-type systems V410 Aur, CK Boo, FP Boo, V921 Her, ET Leo, XZ Leo, V839 Oph, V2357 Oph, AQ Psc and VY Sex are presented. The new multicolor light curves, combined with the spectroscopic data recently obtained at David Dunlap Observatory, are analyzed with the Wilson-Devinney code to yield the physical parameters (masses, radii and luminosities) of the components. Our models for all ten systems resulted in a contact configuration. Four binaries (V921 Her, XZ Leo, V2357 Oph and VY Sex) have low, while two (V410 Aur and CK Boo) have high fill-out factors. FP Boo, ET Leo, V839 Oph and AQ Psc have medium values of the fill-out factor. Three of the systems (FP Boo, V921 Her and XZ Leo) have very bright primaries as a result of their high temperatures and large radii.
