Abstract:We consider a Grover walk model on a finite internal graph, which is connected with a finite number of semi-infinite length paths and receives the alternative inflows along these paths at each time step. After the long time scale, we know that the behavior of such a Grover walk should be stable, that is, this model has a stationary state. In this paper our objectives are to give some characterization upon the scattering of the stationary state on the surface of the internal graph and upon the energy of this state in the interior. For the scattering, we concretely give a scattering matrix, whose form is changed depending on whether the internal graph is bipartite or not. On the other hand, we introduce a comfortability function of a graph for the quantum walk, which shows how many quantum walkers can stay in the interior, and we succeed in showing the comfortability of the walker in terms of combinatorial properties of the internal graph.

Abstract:The Grover walk is one of the most well-studied quantum walks on graphs. In this paper, we investigate its periodicity to reveal the relationship between the quantum walk and the underlying graph, focusing particularly on the characterization of graphs exhibiting a periodic Grover walk. Graphs having a periodic Grover walk with periods of $2, 3, 4$, and $5$ have previously been characterized. It is expected that graphs exhibiting a periodic Grover walk with odd period correspond to cycles with odd length. We address that problem and are able to perfectly characterize the class of graphs exhibiting an odd-periodic Grover walk by using a combinatorial method.

Abstract:In this paper we improve the best known constant for the discrepancy formulated in the Komlos Conjecture. The result is based on the improvement of the subgaussian bound for the random vector constructed in the Gram-Schmidt Random Walk algorithm. Moreover, we present detailed argument for the smoothed analysis of this random vector. The analysis concerns a modification of a given matrix in the conjecture by a Gaussian type perturbation. Our result improves the recent paper in this direction.

Abstract:We explore the possibility of using quantum walks on graphs to find structural anomalies, such as extra edges or loops, on a graph. We focus our attention on star graphs, whose edges are like spokes coming out of a central hub. If there are N spokes, we show that a quantum walk can find an extra edge connecting two of the spokes or a spoke with a loop on it in O(N) steps. We initially find that if all except one of the spokes have loops, the walk will not find the spoke without a loop, but this can be fixed if we choose the phase with which the particle is reflected from the vertex without the loop. Consequently, quantum walks can, under some circumstances, be used to find structural anomalies in graphs.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Grover's search algorithm focusing on continuous-time quantum walk on graphs. We propose an alternative optimization approach to Grover's algorithm on graphs that can be summarized as follows: Instead of finding specific graph topologies convenient for the related quantum walk, we fix the graph topology and vary the underlying graph Laplacians. As a result, we search for the most appropriate analytical structure on graphs endowed with fixed topologies yielding better search outcomes. We discuss strategies to investigate the optimality of Grover's algorithm and provide an example with an easy tunable graph Laplacian to investigate our ideas.

Abstract:We study perfect state transfer in Grover walks, which are typical discrete-time quantum walk models. In particular, we focus on states associated to vertices of a graph. We call such states vertex type states. Perfect state transfer between vertex type states can be studied via Chebyshev polynomials. We derive a necessary condition on eigenvalues of a graph for perfect state transfer between vertex type states to occur. In addition, we perfectly determine the complete multipartite graphs whose partite sets are the same size on which perfect state transfer occurs between vertex type states, together with the time.

Abstract:For any integer $k\geq 1,$ define $L_k: \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}$ by $(a_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\mapsto (a'_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ where $a'_n=\det(a_{n+i+j})_{i,j=0}^{k-1}$. Previously, Zhu showed that $L_k$ preserves the Stieltjes moment (SM) property of sequences (Proc. Am. Math. Soc., 2019). The proof used the characterization of SM sequences in terms of positive semidefinite Hankel matrices. In this note, we give another proof by viewing SM sequences as weighted enumerations of closed walks on $\mathbb{N}$. Our proof is essentially a double-counting argument that views a $k$-tuple of non-crossing Dyck paths as a single closed walk on some bipartite subgraph of $\mathbb{N}^k.$

Abstract:Recently, the Ihara zeta function for the finite graph has been extended to infinite one by Clair and Chinta et al. In this paper, we obtain the same expressions by a different approach from their analytical method. Our new approach is to take a suitable limit of a sequence of finite graphs via the Konno–Sato theorem. This theorem is related to explicit formulas of characteristic polynomials for the evolution matrix of the Grover walk. The walk is one of the most well-investigated quantum walks which are quantum counterpart of classical random walks. We call the relation between the Grover walk and the zeta function based on the Konno–Sato theorem "Grover/Zeta Correspondence" here.

Abstract:We propose a phenomenon of discrete-time quantum walks on graphs called the pulsation, which is a generalization of a phenomenon in the quantum searches. This phenomenon is discussed on a composite graph formed by two connected graphs $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$. The pulsation means that the state periodically transfers between $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ with the initial state of the uniform superposition on $G_1$. In this paper, we focus on the case for the Grover walk where $G_{1}$ is the Johnson graph and $G_{2}$ is a star graph. Also, the composite graph is constructed by identifying an arbitrary vertex of the Johnson graph with the internal vertex of the star graph. In that case, we find the pulsation with $O(\sqrt{N^{1+1/k}})$ periodicity, where $N$ is the number of vertices of the Johnson graph. The proof is based on Kato's perturbation theory in finite-dimensional vector spaces.

Abstract:We provide a detailed analysis of the survival probability of the Grover walk on the ladder graph with an absorbing sink. This model was discussed in Mare\v s et al., Phys. Rev. A 101, 032113 (2020), as an example of counter-intuitive behaviour in quantum transport where it was found that the survival probability decreases with the length of the ladder $L$, despite the fact that the number of dark states increases. An orthonormal basis in the dark subspace is constructed, which allows us to derive a closed formula for the survival probability. It is shown that the course of the survival probability as a function of $L$ can change from increasing and converging exponentially quickly to decreasing and converging like $L^{-1}$ simply by attaching a loop to one of the corners of the ladder. The interplay between the initial state and the graph configuration is investigated.

Sensitivity of quantum walk to phase reversal and geometric perturbations: an exploration in complete graphs

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the dynamics of quantum walks on a graph structure resulting from the integration of a main connected graph $G$ and a secondary connected graph $G'$. This composite graph is formed by a disjoint union of $G$ and $G'$, followed by the contraction of a selected pair of vertices creating a cut vertex $v^*$ and leading to a unique form of geometric perturbation. Our study focuses on instances where $G$ is a complete graph $K_N$ and $G'$ is a star graph $S_m$. The core of our analysis lies in exploring the impact of this geometric perturbation on the success probability of quantum walk-based search algorithms, particularly in an oracle-free context. Despite initial findings suggesting a low probability of locating the perturbed vertex $v^*$, we demonstrate that introducing a phase reversal to the system significantly enhances the success rate. Our results reveal that with an optimal running time and specific parameter conditions, the success probability can be substantially increased. The paper is structured to first define the theoretical framework, followed by the presentation of our main results, detailed proofs, and concluding with a summary of our findings and potential future research directions.

Abstract:We completely characterize circulant graphs with valency up to $4$ that admit perfect state transfer. Those of valency $3$ do not admit it. On the other hand, circulant graphs with valency $4$ admit perfect state transfer only in two infinite families: one discovered by Zhan and another new family, while no others do. The main tools for deriving these results are symmetry of graphs and eigenvalues. We describe necessary conditions for perfect state transfer to occur based on symmetry of graphs, which mathematically refers to automorphisms of graphs. As for eigenvalues, if perfect state transfer occurs, then certain eigenvalues of the corresponding isotropic random walks must be the halves of algebraic integers. Taking this into account, we utilize known results on the rings of integers of cyclotomic fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Grover walks on a line with one and two absorbing boundaries. In particular, we present some results for the absorbing probabilities in both a semi-finite and finite line. Analytical expressions for these absorbing probabilities are presented by using the combinatorial approach. These results are perfectly matched with numerical simulations. We show that the behavior of Grover walks on a line with absorbing boundaries is strikingly different from that of classical walks and that of Hadamard walks.
