Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid structure microlaser on chip with a single CdSe nanowire attached to a high-Q silica microdisk cavity at room temperature. When pumped by a 532 nm pulse laser, both single-longitudinal mode and multi-longitudinal mode lasers with linewidth of 0.18 nm are obtained from the hybrid structure with a 58-mu m-diameter microdisk and a 250-nm diameter nanowire. The measured lasing threshold of the microlaser is as low as 100 mu J/cm(2). (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Dense arrays of high aspect ratio Si micro-pyramids have been formed by cumulative high intensity laser irradiation of doped Si wafers in an SF6 environment. A comparative study using nanosecond (XeCl, 308 nm) and femtosecond (Ti: Sapphire, 800 nm and KrF, 248 nm) laser pulses has been performed in this work. The influence of pulse duration and ambient gas pressure (SF6) is also presented. Scanning electron microscopy has shown that upon laser irradiation conical features appear on the Si surface in a rather homogenous distribution and with a spontaneous self alignment into arrays. Their lowest tip diameter is 800 nm; while their height reaches up to 90 μm. Secondary tip decoration appears on the surface of the formed spikes. Areas of 2×2 mm2 covered with Si cones have been tested as cold cathode field emitters. After several conditioning cycles, the field emission threshold for the studied Si tips is as low as 2 V/μm, with an emission current of 10−3 A/cm2 at 4 V/μm. Even though these structures have smaller aspect ratios than good quality carbon nanotubes, their field emission properties are similar. The simple and direct formation of field emission Si arrays over small pre-selected areas by laser irradiation could lead to a novel approach for the development of electron sources.
Experimental Study on LD End-pumped Microchip Solid Laser

Abstract:By using a Φ20mm×1mm Nd 3+∶YVO 4 and Φ 6mm×1.1mm Cr 4+∶Nd 3+∶YAG crystal directly coated dielectric film on both and,microchip lasers with a few millimeter parallel resonator can be obtained.By using end-pumped scheme,both CW-operation and pulse-pump operation with pre-pump technique has been researched.On CW operation,the microchip using Cr 4+∶Nd 3+∶YAG can obtain a self-Q-switched 1064nm laser pulse with 6ns width (FWHM) and repetition rate up to 10kHz,and the microchip using Nd 3+∶YVO 4 can obtain a CW laser up to 62mW with slope efficiency of 23.3%.By pulse pumped,a controllable and stable pulse sequence can be achieved using Cr 4+∶Nd 3+∶YAG crystal.Furthermore,the output laser pulse sequence of the microchip using YVO 4 behaves similar characters as self-Q-switched pulse.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel and efficient method for generating Airy beams is demonstrated by microstructure on a nonlinear crystal surface, which is fabricated by a focused ion beam (FIB) technique. The proposed method of generating nonlinear Airy beams shows great potential for integrated optics, optical micro‐machining, and advanced imaging. Owing to its peculiar non‐diffraction, self‐acceleration, and self‐healing properties, the Airy beam has attracted a great deal of attention in various fields such as micro‐manipulation, plasma generation, and optical microscopy. To date, it is still a challenge to generate nonlinear Airy beams with microstructure efficiently, thus limiting applications of such Airy beams. Here, a novel and efficient method for generating Airy beams is experimentally demonstrated by microstructure on a nonlinear crystal surface, which is fabricated by a focused ion beam (FIB) technique. The second‐harmonic (SH) Airy beams are generated in the far field and characterize their intensity distributions, which agree well with theoretical results. Then, the self‐accelerating and self‐healing properties of the generated SH Airy beams are demonstrated. Besides, the normalized efficiency of SH Airy beams is measured at (1.44 × 10−5%W−1), and compare the efficiency of different methods of generating nonlinear Airy beams, which shows the advantages of this method. The proposed method of generating nonlinear Airy beams shows great potential for integrated optics, optical micro‐machining, and advanced imaging.

1D self-healing beams in integrated silicon photonics

Abstract:Since the first experimental observation of optical Airy beams, various applications ranging from particle and cell micromanipulation to laser micromachining have exploited their non-diffracting and accelerating properties. The later discovery that Airy beams can self-heal after being blocked by an obstacle further proved their robustness to propagate under scattering and disordered environment. Here, we report the generation of Airy beams on an integrated silicon photonic chip and demonstrate that the on-chip 1D Airy beams preserve the same properties as the 2D beams. The 1D meta-optics used to create the Airy beam has the size of only 3 by 16 microns, at least three orders of magnitude smaller than the conventional optic. The on-chip self-healing beams demonstrated here could potentially enable diffraction-free light routing for on-chip optical networks and high-precision micromanipulation of bio-molecules on an integrated photonic chip.

Here, we report a new form of this intriguing wave packet - plasmonic Airy beam, which is experimentally realized on a silver surface for the first time. By particular diffraction processes in a carefully designed nano-array structure, a novel planar Airy beam of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is directly generated and a structural dependent phase tuning method is proposed to modulate the beam properties. This SPP Airy beam is regarded as a two-dimensional (2D) subwavelength counterpart of the 3D optical Airy beam in free space, allowing for on-chip photonic manipulations. Moreover, it possibly suggests a breakthrough in recognition of this unique wave packet in a polariton regime after its previous evolution from free particle to pure optical wave.

Abstract:Microchip lasers are very compact and efficient coherent light sources; however, their applications are restricted due to poor beam quality and limited brightness, especially in high-emission power regimes. We used a thin-film-based angular filtering mirror to substitute one of the planar resonator mirrors to solve this limitation. The angle-selective reflection suppresses the high-order transverse modes and enables lasing on the lowest-order ones, thus improving the spatial quality of the emitted beam. Our experimental results, supported by numerical simulations, demonstrate decrease of beam quality parameter M2 and a twofold increase in the brightness of emitted radiation.

Abstract:Emitting light toward on-demand directions is important for various optoelectronic applications, such as optical communication, displaying, and ranging. However, almost all existing directional emitters are assemblies of passive optical antennae and external light sources, which are usually bulky and fragile and show unendurable loss of light power. Here we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a conceptual design of a directional emitter, by using a single surface-emitting laser source itself to achieve dynamically controlled beam steering. The laser is built on photonic crystals that operate near the band edges in the continuum. By shrinking laser sizes to tens-of-wavelength, the optical modes quantize in three-dimensional momentum space, and each of them directionally radiates toward the far-field. Further utilizing the luminescence spectrum shifting effect under current injection, we consecutively select a sequence of modes into lasing action and show the laser maintaining single-mode operation with line widths at a minimum of 1.8 MHz and an emitting power of ∼10 milliwatts, and we demonstrate fast beam steering across a range of 3.2° × 4° on a time scale of 500 ns. Our work proposes a method for on-chip active beam steering for the development of automotive, industrial, and robotic applications.

Abstract:A conventional free-electron laser is useful but large, driven by a beam with many relativistic electrons. Although, recently, keV electron beams have been used to excite broadband radiation from material chips, there remains a quest for a chip-size free-electron laser capable of emitting coherent radiation. Unfortunately, those keV emitters from electron microscopes or dielectric laser accelerator usually deliver a small current with discrete moving electrons separated by a distance of a few or tens of microns. To envisage a chip-size free-electron laser as a powerful research tool, we study in this paper achievable laser radiation from a single electron and an array of single electrons atop a nano-grating dielectric waveguide. In our study, thanks to the strong coupling between the electron and the guided wave in a structure with distributed feedback, a single 50-keV electron generates 1.5-um laser-like radiation at the Bragg resonance of a 31-um long silicon grating with a 400-nm thickness and 310-nm period. When driven by a train of single electrons repeating at 0.1 PHz, the nano-grating waveguide emits a strong laser radiation at the second harmonic of the excitation frequency. A discrete spectrum of Smith-Purcell radiation mediated by the waveguide modes is also predicted in theory and observed from simulation in the vacuum space above the grating waveguide. This study opens up the opportunity for applications requiring combined advantages from compact high-brightness electron and photon sources.

Dynamic Airy Imaging Through High-Efficiency Broadband Phase Microelements by Femtosecond Laser Direct Writing

Abstract:Manipulating Airy beams to symmetric Airy beams (SABs) with abruptly autofocusing and self-accelerating properties has attracted much attention. With such a particular propagation dynamic, SABs may provide great potential in dynamic signal imaging. On the other hand, the generation of SABs by spatial light modulators suffers from the limitations of phase gradient accuracy, low optical efficiency ( < 40 % ), and a bulky footprint. Therefore, exploring imaging applications and optimal generation methods of these Airy-type beams deserves further research. Here, based on the coordinate transformation of SAB, an asymmetric Airy beam (AAB) is realized. Symmetric/asymmetric cubic phase microplates (SCPPs/ACPPs) are designed and fabricated for generating SAB/AAB. The SCPP/ACPP demonstrates superior performance: compact construction ( 60 μm × 60 μm × 1.1 μm ), continuous variation of phase, high efficiency ( ∼ 81 % at 532 nm), and broadband operation from 405 to 780 nm. Dynamic imaging under monochromatic and polychromatic lights is realized by the SAB/AAB, indicating various results at different propagation distances with a certain initial signal. Further investigation reveals that the SCPP on a soft substrate maintains its physical dimensions and optical properties unchanged during stretching. Our work enables wide potential applications in integrated optics, beam manipulation, and imaging.

Abstract:Microchip lasers are applied as the light sources on various occasions with the end-pumping scheme. However, the vibration, the temperature drift, or the mechanical deformation of the pumping light in laser diodes in the end-pumping scheme will lead to instability in the microchip laser output, which causes errors and malfunctioning in the optic systems. In this paper, the side-pumping scheme is applied for improving the disturbance-resisting ability of the microchip laser. The transverse mode and the frequency purity of the laser output are tested. To ensure unicity in the frequency of the laser output, numerical simulations based on Fresnel Kirchhoff diffraction theory are conducted on the parameters of the microchip laser cavity. Film-etching technique is applied to restrain the area of the film and form the microcavity mirrors. The laser output with microcavity mirrors is ensured to be in single frequency and with good beam quality, which is significant in the applications of microchip lasers as the light sources in optical systems. Abstract:Conventional approaches for generating Airy beams rely upon bulky and costly systems, which impede the miniaturization of optical systems. Metasurfaces have provided a compact method to generate Airy optical beams, but the current schemes suffer from the issues of narrow bandwidths and/or low transmission efficiencies. Here, a design strategy of constructing broadband and high‐efficiency transmissive Airy optical beam generator by taking advantages of the high birefringence and transmission efficiency of dielectric metasurfaces is proposed. The local amplitude and phase of transmitted light can be simultaneously modulated to satisfy the Airy function by controlling the orientation angles of silicon nano‐pillars, regardless of the incidence wavelength. The resultant Airy beam generator is experimentally verified within an ultra‐wide operation bandwidth from 1.1 to 1.7 µm. The remarkable diffraction‐free, self‐accelerating, and self‐healing properties of Airy beams are also demonstrated. The results may power up viable opportunities for practical devices and applications of metasurface‐based Airy beams.

Abstract:Owing to the distinguishing properties of nondiffraction, self-healing, and transverse acceleration, Airy beams have attracted much attention in the past decade. To date, a simple approach for exquisitely fabricating cubic phase plates with both continuous variation of phase and micro size still remains challenging, which limits the generation of highquality Airy beams for integrated micro-optics. Here, we report the elaborate design and fabrication of a continuous cubic phase microplate (CCPP) for generating high-quality Airy beams in micrometer scale. A CCPP with a precise size (60 mu m x 60 mu m x 1.1 mu m) is fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing, exhibiting a high optical efficiency (similar to 79%). The high-quality Airy beam generated via the CCPP demonstrates an unprecedentedly strong deflection (similar to 4.2 ae m within a 90 ae m propagation distance) as well as being diffraction-free. Our research on the design and fabrication of miniature Airy phase plates paves the way toward high-performance integrated optics, optical micromanipulation, and optical imaging. Abstract:Using a Ti:sapphire laser as the pumping source in the CW mode, the self-Q-switched laser in the co-doped Cr4+,Nd3+:YAG microchip with 1mm thickness was demonstrated. The output Q-switched traces are very stable, the threshold pumping power is as low as 30 mW, the pulse duration is as short as 100 ns. And the pulse width keeps constant and pulse repetition rate is varied with the variation of the pumping power. The slope efficiency is varied with the transmission of output coupler at 1064nm, and the slope efficiency is as high as 20% for 5% transmission of output coupler at 1064nm. This can lead to develop the diode laser pumped monolithic self-Q-switched solid-state microchip lasers.
All-Dielectric Synthetic-Phase Metasurfaces Generating Practical Airy Beams

Abstract:Accelerating optical beams exhibit exotic features, such as nondiffractive propagation, self-acceleration, and self-healing, which have led their use in a wide range of photonics applications. However, spatial light modulator-based generators of such beams suffer from narrow operational bandwidth, high cost, low diffraction efficiency, and limited integration capability. Although recent metasurface-based approaches have yielded generators with significantly improved bandwidths and integration capacities, the resultant devices usually have ultrashort working distances and limited control over characteristic beam parameters, which decreases their utility in optical imaging and manipulation applications. Herein, we describe a synthetic-phase metasurface-based approach that overcomes these problems and increases the degrees of freedom to enable effective control of beam parameters by integrating a cubic phase profile and the phase of a Fresnel holographic lens into a single metasurface. We demonstrate this approach by using the synthetic metasurface to generate a series of Airy beams with controllable focal length (i.e., working distance), narrowed beam width, and extended propagation distance. Crucially, these beam parameters are fully adjustable, which makes these focal-length-modifiable Airy beams particularly appealing for use in high-resolution, large field-of-view imaging, and deep-penetration optical manipulation. Furthermore, we show that imposing the phase of a Dammann grating into a synthetic metasurface generates a 1 × 4 array of Airy beams that exhibit the aforementioned optical properties. Generation of Airy Beams in Smith-Purcell Radiation.

Abstract:The metasurface has recently emerged as a powerful platform to engineer wave packets of free electron radiation at the mesoscale. Here, we propose that Airy beams can be generated when moving electrons interact with bianisotropic metasurfaces. By changing the intrinsic coupling strength, full amplitude coverage and 0-to-π phase switching of Smith-Purcell radiation can be realized from the meta-atoms. This unusual property shifts the wave front of the assembled Airy beam toward a parabolic trajectory. Experimental implementation displays that evanescent fields bounded at slotted waveguides can be coupled into Airy beams via Smith-Purcell radiation from a designed bianisotropic metasurface. Our method and design strategy offer an alternative route toward free-electron lasers with diffraction-free, self-accelerating, and self-healing beam properties.
Electrically‐Driven Photonic Crystal Lasers with Ultra‐low Threshold

Abstract:Electrically‐driven photonic crystal microlaser has been demonstrated, featuring continuous wave operation with an ultra‐low threshold of 10.2 μA at room temperature. This analysis shows that the temporal confinement of the photons in such laser cavities is dominated by the absorption of the p‐type doping used for electrical injection and also shows that the efficiency is limited by the leakage current. Light sources with ultra‐low energy consumption and high performance are required to realize optical interconnects for on‐chip communication. Photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity lasers are one of the most promising candidates for this role. In this work, a continuous‐wave PhC nanolaser with an ultra‐low threshold current of 10.2 μA emitting at 1540 nm and operated at room temperature is demonstrated. The lasers are InP‐based bonded on silicon (Si), and comprise a buried heterostructure active region and lateral p–i–n junction, feature CMOS‐compatible drive voltage, and exhibit low self‐heating. Carrier leakage is a fundamental limitation of the lateral pumping scheme that is identified as unwanted spontaneous emission from the InP p–i interface, limiting the injection efficiency to 3% which further decreases at higher current. The effect of fabrication disorder and p‐doping absorption on the Q‐factor is studied experimentally showing that p‐doping limits the Q‐factor to 8000, with a p‐doping absorption coefficient of 120 cm−1.

Beam Shaping of Edge-Emitting Diode Lasers Using a Single Double-Axial Hyperboloidal Micro-Lens.

Abstract:We report an innovative approach for beam shaping of edge-emitting semiconductor diode lasers using a single double-axial hyperboloidal micro-lens fabricated with femtosecond laser direct writing technology. The two hyperboloids of different axial lengths focus the light from fast and slow axes to an identical focal spot. The divergence angles were shaped from 60° and 9° to 6.9 and 32.3 mrad, respectively, and the single-end fiber coupling efficiency is measured higher than 80%. The device is simple in fabrication, robust in structure, and easy for operation, by which multiple reflections and absorptions at interfaces are reduced, and assembly errors are minimized.

Abstract:Photonic crystal lasers operating at room temperature based on high Q/V nanobeam cavities have been demonstrated. We reported a large spontaneous emission factor (~0.97) by fitting the L-L curve with the rate equations.
