Over time, cryptography evolved from basic methods to complex systems involving number theory, such as modular arithmetic, the Euclidean algorithm, and Eulers totient function. This paper explores the link between early information hiding techniques and modern cryptographic algorithms like RSA, which use advanced number theory to secure data for billions of people. By analyzing historical methods, this study shows how the development of number theory enabled the transition from simple letter shifting ciphers, like the Caesar and Vigenere ciphers, to more sophisticated encryption methods. This evolution reflects a profound impact on daily life and the importance of number theory in protecting information.

Abstract:The Rabin public-key cryptosystem is revisited with a focus on the problem of identifying the encrypted message unambiguously for any pair of primes. In particular, a deterministic scheme using quartic reciprocity is described that works for primes congruent 5 modulo 8, a case that was still open. Both theoretical and practical solutions are presented. The Rabin signature is also reconsidered and a deterministic padding mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:These lectures notes were written for a summer school on Mathematics for post-quantum cryptography in Thiès, Senegal. They try to provide a guide for Masters' students to get through the vast literature on elliptic curves, without getting lost on their way to learning isogeny based cryptography. They are by no means a reference text on the theory of elliptic curves, nor on cryptography; students are encouraged to complement these notes with some of the books recommended in the bibliography. The presentation is divided in three parts, roughly corresponding to the three lectures given. In an effort to keep the reader interested, each part alternates between the fundamental theory of elliptic curves, and applications in cryptography. We often prefer to have the main ideas flow smoothly, rather than having a rigorous presentation as one would have in a more classical book. The reader will excuse us for the inaccuracies and the omissions.

She belongs to the Cryptology research group at University of La Laguna devoted to the development of projects on cryptology since 2007,and is involved in several projects and publications related to this area. She has authored several conference and journal papers.Dr. Cándido Caballero-Gil holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain) and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of La Laguna (Spain). Since 2009,he has been an active researcher at the University of La Laguna,where he was appointed Senior Lecturer in 2021. His research expertise spans key areas such as cybersecurity,simulation,vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs),and privacy. As a core member of the prestigious CryptULL research group,he has contributed significantly to various high-impact cybersecurity projects. Dr. Caballero-Gil's scholarly achievements include the publication of numerous peer-reviewed papers in leading conferences and high-ranking academic journals,demonstrating his ongoing commitment to advancing research in his field.Judit Gutiérrez-de-Armas is Assistant Professor in Early Modern History at the University of La Laguna,Spain. She received her PhD in History from the ULL and her PhD in Historical Archivistics from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa,Portugal (2019). Her line of research focuses on the emergence and development of family archives and their impact on the formation of social and gender identities. She has received several research awards in this area,including the Extraordinary PhD Award from the ULL,the Agustín de Betancourt Research Award 2020 and the Archives & Manuscripts Sigrid McCausland Emerging Writers Award 2020 from the Australian Society of Archivists.Moti Yung is a Distinguished Research Scientist with Google,and an Adjunct Research Faculty at Columbia University. He got his PhD at Columbia in 1988. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences,and a fellow of professional organizations,such as ACM,IEEE,IACR,and EATCS. Previously,he served as a research scientist with Snap Inc,a technical director with RSA Labs,a vice president and chief scientist with Certco LLC,and a researcher with IBM. In 2010 he gave the IACR distinguished lecture in Cryptography,in 2014 he won the ACM sigsac's outstanding innovation award. He further received the "W.W. McDowell Award" and the "Women of the ENIAC Computer Pioneer Award" from the IEEE Computer Society in 2017 and 2021,respectively. He also received awards by IBM and Google for his industrial innovative contributions,and his past papers have won a number of Test of Time Awards,over the years. Since the 1980s he has been interested in Cryptography,Computer Security and Privacy,and other areas of theoretical and applied Computer Science.

Abstract:This article presents a cryptanalysis of a 19th-century encrypted manuscript discovered in the archives of Conde de Siete Fuentes in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The manuscript, preserved by the heirs of the 6th Count of Valle de Salazar, utilizes a polyalphabetic substitution cipher. The cryptanalysis was performed by applying statistical frequency analysis and developing a Python script for decryption, resulting in the authors successfully deciphering the message. The decrypted letter reveals political communications discussing the strategic positioning of Tenerife as the capital, the dissolution of local councils, and the influence of key political figures. The analysis compares the cipher with historical encryption techniques, and identifies the unique characteristics of the manuscript's encryption method. The study highlights the political dynamics and alliances within Tenerife's nobility and their interactions with the central Spanish government, providing significant insights into, both, the cryptographic practices and political maneuvers of the time.

They also learned that there is nothing more fascinating than other people's secrets. The ancient art of cryptography (code-making) has throughout history been matched against the ingenuity of cryptanalysts (code-breakers), sometimes in very dramatic circumstances. The battles of wits, intellects, cunning, mathematical prowess and, more recently, technology have made the history of cryptology so colourful that it is bound to appeal to everyone's imagination. It is a great story to tell, and Simon Singh, in The Code Book, tells it very well indeed.

Abstract:We present an overview of instructions for the use of European historical cipher keys in early modern times. We describe the structure of instructions and the content presented to the key users. We exemplify various key instruction types and give a text edition of typical examples in various languages. The study is based on the analysis of more than 1,600 cipher keys collected from archives and libraries in ten European countries. We examine the practical implementation of cipher keys to the extent that instructions offer insights into everyday cryptographic practices. We focus on the typical rules scribes were expected to adhere to and the common errors they were instructed to avoid. We aim to reconstruct the apprehensions and considerations of the authors of cipher keys: They sought to offer assistance to users while likely harboring concerns regarding the potential misuse of their intellectual product. Given the secretive nature of cryptology, the documentation of knowledge transfer is scarce. In addition to the detailed manuals authored by well-known cryptologists, anonymous cipher key instructions offer valuable insights into this knowledge transfer process. By studying these instructions, historians gain direct access to a realm of knowledge that would otherwise remain hidden from their view.

Abstract:These lecture notes have been written for courses given at École normale supérieure de Lyon and summer school 2022 in post-quantum cryptography that took place in the university of Budapest. Our objective is to give a general introduction to the foundations of code-based cryptography which is currently known to be secure even against quantum adversaries. In particular we focus our attention to the decoding problem whose hardness is at the ground of the security of many cryptographic primitives, the most prominent being McEliece and Alekhnovich' encryption schemes.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to give an overview over the theory of abelian varieties, with main focus on Jacobian varieties of curves reaching from well-known results till to latest developments and their usage in cryptography. In the first part we provide the necessary mathematical background on abelian varieties, their torsion points, Honda-Tate theory, Galois representations, with emphasis on Jacobian varieties and hyperelliptic Jacobians. In the second part we focus on applications of abelian varieties on cryptography and treating separately, elliptic curve cryptography, genus 2 and 3 cryptography, including Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange, index calculus in Picard groups, isogenies of Jacobians via correspondences and applications to discrete logarithms. Several open problems and new directions are suggested.

Abstract:These are lecture notes of a 20-hour course at the International Summer School \emph{Mathematical Methods and Technologies in Computer Security} at Lomonosov Moscow State University, July 9--23, 2006. Loosely speaking, a $T$-function is a map of $n$-bit words into $n$-bit words such that each $i$-th bit of image depends only on low-order bits $0,..., i$ of the pre-image. For example, all arithmetic operations (addition, multiplication) are $T$-functions, all bitwise logical operations ($\XOR$, $\AND$, etc.) are $T$-functions. Any composition of $T$-functions is a $T$-function as well. Thus $T$-functions are natural computer word-oriented functions. It turns out that $T$-functions are continuous (and often differentiable!) functions with respect to the so-called 2-adic distance. This observation gives a powerful tool to apply 2-adic analysis to construct wide classes of $T$-functions with provable cryptographic properties (long period, balance, uniform distribution, high linear complexity, etc.); these functions currently are being used in new generation of fast stream ciphers. We consider these ciphers as specific automata that could be associated to dynamical systems on the space of 2-adic integers. From this view the lectures could be considered as a course in cryptographic applications of the non-Archimedean dynamics; the latter has recently attracted significant attention in connection with applications to physics, biology and cognitive sciences. During the course listeners study non-Archimedean machinery and its applications to stream cipher design.

Abstract:Alan Turing has certainly contributed to a widespread belief that the quest for a perfect, unbreakable, cipher is a futile pursuit. The ancient art of concealing information has, in the past, been matched by the ingenuity of code-breakers, but no longer! With the advent of quantum cryptography, the hopes of would-be eavesdroppers have been dashed, perhaps for good. Moreover, recent research, building on schemes that were invented decades ago to perform quantum cryptography, shows that secure communication certified by a sufficient violation of a Bell inequality makes a seemingly insane scenario possible—devices of unknown or dubious provenance, even those that are manufactured by our enemies, can be safely used for secure communication, including key distribution. All that is needed to implement this bizarre and powerful form of cryptography is a loophole-free test of a Bell inequality, which is on the cusp of technological feasibility. We provide a brief overview of the intriguing connections between Bell inequalities and cryptography and describe how studies of quantum entanglement and the foundations of quantum theory influence the way we may protect information in the future.
Can a Tabula Recta provide security in the XXI century?

Abstract:In the not so unlikely scenario of total compromise of computers accessible to a group of users, they might be tempted to resort to human-computable paper-and-pencil cryptographic methods aided by a classic Tabula Recta, which helps to perform addition and subtraction directly with letters. But do these classic algorithms, or some new ones using the same simple tools, have any chance against computer-aided cryptanalysis? In this paper I discuss how some human-computable algorithms can indeed afford sufficient security in this situation, drawing conclusions from computer-based statistical analysis. Three kinds of algorithms are discussed: those that concentrate entropy from shared text sources, stream ciphers based on arithmetic of non-binary spaces, and hash-like algorithms that may be used to generate a password from a challenge text.

Due to its complexity and the encryption process,there was no published attack for a period of more than 40 years until 2018 by Nicolas T. Courtois et al. in [10]. In this thesis we study the so called 'long term keys' that were used in the cipher, in order to expose weaknesses which will assist the design of various attacks on T-310.

Abstract:An encryption method is presented with the novel property that publicly revealing an encryption key does not thereby reveal the corresponding decryption key. This has two important consequences: (1) Couriers or other secure means are not needed to transmit keys, since a message can be enciphered using an encryption key publicly revealed by the intented recipient. Only he can decipher the message, since only he knows the corresponding decryption key. (2) A message can be “signed” using a privately held decryption key. Anyone can verify this signature using the corresponding publicly revealed encryption key. Signatures cannot be forged, and a signer cannot later deny the validity of his signature. This has obvious applications in “electronic mail” and “electronic funds transfer” systems. A message is encrypted by representing it as a number M, raising M to a publicly specified power e, and then taking the remainder when the result is divided by the publicly specified product, n , of two large secret primer numbers p and q. Decryption is similar; only a different, secret, power d is used, where e * d ≡ 1(mod (p - 1) * (q - 1)). The security of the system rests in part on the difficulty of factoring the published divisor, n .

Abstract:This is a survey on the One Time Pad (OTP) and its derivatives, from its origins to modern times. OTP, if used correctly, is (the only) cryptographic code that no computing power, present or future, can break. Naturally, the discussion shifts to the creation of long random sequences, starting from short ones, which can be easily shared. We could call it the Short Key Dream. Many problems inevitably arise, which affect many fields of computer science, mathematics and knowledge in general. This work presents a vast bibliography that includes fundamental classical works and current papers on randomness, pseudorandom number generators, compressibility, unpredictability and more.
