Abstract:Abstract: This research paper surveys the landscape of cryptography, encompassing historical origins and modern applications. Beginning with foundational concepts, it explores encryption, decryption, ciphers, and keys, spanning symmetric and asymmetric cryptography. Historical context unfolds, tracing cryptography from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs to Julius Caesar's cipher. The study then transitions to contemporary subjects. Elliptic Curves and Cryptography are investigated, showcasing their significance in secure communication, demonstrating ECC key exchange and AES-GCM encryption using python and Comparative analysis of ECC, RSA, and Diffie-Hellman sheds light on their performance. Zero-Knowledge Proofs are introduced as tools for privacy-preserving verification followed by an exploration of various Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) protocols. By presenting practical implementation examples using Python, the paper illustrates how these proofs can be applied in real-world scenarios. Random Number Generation is examined and distinction between pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) and cryptographically secure PRNGs (CSPRNGs) is emphasized conducting a thorough comparative analysis of PRNGs and CSPRNGs, considering factors like correlation, independence, periodicity, and entropy. Furthermore, the section evaluates the performance of different random number generation techniques. Fully Homomorphic Encryption emerges as a groundbreaking concept, discussing its mathematical properties, practical implementation, parameter selection, and optimization techniques enabling computation on encrypted data. Cryptographic Secret Sharing Schemes are explored for secure information distribution. The paper concludes by delving into the Chinese Remainder Theorem's applications within modern cryptographic protocols, particularly in RSA decryption and the integration factorization process of the RSA public key cryptosystem. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations of primality testing, a pivotal aspect of the RSA algorithm. Overall, this research paper provides a comprehensive exploration of cryptography's historical context, core concepts, advanced techniques, and practical implementations, offering valuable insights into the realm of secure communication

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to give an overview over the theory of abelian varieties, with main focus on Jacobian varieties of curves reaching from well-known results till to latest developments and their usage in cryptography. In the first part we provide the necessary mathematical background on abelian varieties, their torsion points, Honda-Tate theory, Galois representations, with emphasis on Jacobian varieties and hyperelliptic Jacobians. In the second part we focus on applications of abelian varieties on cryptography and treating separately, elliptic curve cryptography, genus 2 and 3 cryptography, including Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange, index calculus in Picard groups, isogenies of Jacobians via correspondences and applications to discrete logarithms. Several open problems and new directions are suggested.

Abstract:Despite the extensive amount of scholarly work done on Indian mathematics in the last 200 years, the conditions under which it originated and evolved is still not clear. Often, one reads the ancient texts with the present concepts and methods in mind. The fact of absence of script over a long stretch of Indian history in ancient times also gets overlooked in such readings. The purpose of this article is to explore the journey of mathematics by examining what the ancient texts tell us about the nature of mathematics in their times. What one finds from the investigation of arithmetic, geometry and algebra is that while it was concrete and context bound, rooted in solving practical problems in ancient times, Indian mathematics transitioned to context free, abstract stage with the advent of algebra supported by writing.

In such fabulous times, a non-mathematician ponders about the nature of mathematics, and revisits the question: why are fundamental laws of Nature inherently mathematical?

Abstract:This paper summarizes basic properties of PPTs and shows that each PPT belongs to one of six different classes. Mapping an ordered sequence of PPTs into a corresponding sequence of these six classes makes it possible to use them in cryptography. We pose problems whose solution would facilitate such cryptographic application.

Abstract:In this invited talk,1 we introduce the notion of arithmetic codex, or codex for short. It encompasses several well-established notions from cryptography (arithmetic secret sharing schemes, which enjoy additive as well as multiplicative properties) and algebraic complexity theory (bilinear complexity of multiplication) in a natural mathematical framework. Arithmetic secret sharing schemes have important applications to secure multi-party computation and even to two-party cryptography. Interestingly, several recent applications to two-party cryptography rely crucially on the existing results on “asymptotically good families” of suitable such schemes. Moreover, the construction of these schemes requires asymptotically good towers of function fields over finite fields: no elementary (probabilistic) constructions are known in these cases. Besides introducing the notion, we discuss some of the constructions, as well as some limitations.

Abstract:Few among us would know that the first mention of the sine and the enumeration of the first sine table are to be credited to Aryabhata. The method to generate this relies on the sine difference formula which is derived using ingenious arguments based on similar triangles. We describe how this was done. In order to make our presentation pedagogical we take a unit circle and radians instead of the (now) archaic notation in the Aryabhatiya and its commentators. We suggest a couple of exercise problems and invite the enterprising student to try their hands. We also point out that his sine and the second sine difference identities are related to the finite difference calculus we now routinely use to calculate derivatives and second derivatives. An understanding of these trigonometric identities and preparation of the sine table will enable a student to get an appreciation of the path breaking work of Aryabhata.

Abstract:Due to some intrinsic features of images, such as bulk data capacity, some traditional encryption algorithms are not suitable. The encryption scheme based on the discretized baker map is rapid and safe. This paper suggests there are three primary factors that threaten the security of the scheme. On the general formula of the discretized baker map the paper proposes an enhanced arithmetic. The experimental tests and results show that the arithmetic is efficient. Moreover the arithmetic is valid for other maps such as cat map. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:Different from traditional symmetric cryptography,public key cryptography allows each user to own a pair of public/private key pair.Given the public key of one user and the data to be encrypted,a ciphertext can be generated such that only the intended user is able to recover the data using his/her private key associated with public key involved in the encryption process.To really understand the philosophy behind the public key cryptography is not an easy task and sometimes it seems somewhat difficult,if not impossible,for the beginners without the knowledge of the abstract algebra and number theory.In this paper,we introduce briefly the basic definition of public key cryptography as well as the corresponding mathematical hard problems.Besides,we explain why the mathematical backgrounds,especially abstract algebra and number theory,matter in the study of public key cryptography.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

Over time, cryptography evolved from basic methods to complex systems involving number theory, such as modular arithmetic, the Euclidean algorithm, and Eulers totient function. This paper explores the link between early information hiding techniques and modern cryptographic algorithms like RSA, which use advanced number theory to secure data for billions of people. By analyzing historical methods, this study shows how the development of number theory enabled the transition from simple letter shifting ciphers, like the Caesar and Vigenere ciphers, to more sophisticated encryption methods. This evolution reflects a profound impact on daily life and the importance of number theory in protecting information.

Abstract:Recently, many cryptographic primitives such as homomorphic encryption (HE), multi-party computation (MPC) and zero-knowledge (ZK) protocols have been proposed in the literature which operate on the prime field for some large prime p . Primitives that are designed using such operations are called arithmetization-oriented primitives. As the concept of arithmetization-oriented primitives is new, a rigorous cryptanalysis of such primitives is yet to be done. In this paper, we investigate arithmetization-oriented APN functions. More precisely, we investigate APN permutations in the CCZ-classes of known families of APN power functions over the prime field . Moreover, we present a class of binomial permutation having differential uniformity at most 5 defined via the quadratic character over finite fields of odd characteristic. Computationally it is confirmed that the latter family contains new APN permutations for some small parameters. We conjecture it to contain an infinite subfamily of APN permutations.

On the computation of the arcsin function in the Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics

Abstract:This paper examines how the mathematicians and astronomers of the Kerala school tackled the problem of computing the values of the arcsin function. Four different approaches are discussed all of which are found in Nilakantha Somayaji's (1444 - 1545 CE) Tantrasangraha and the roots of all of which can be traced to ideas originally articulated by Sangamagrama Madhava (c. 1340 - 1425 CE): (i) a simple method when the argument is small; (ii) an iterative method when the argument is small; (iii) a method based on a lookup table; (iv) a method when the argument is large. The paper also contains the original Sanskrit verses describing the various methods and English translations thereof. Moreover, there is a presentation of a novel method for computing the circumference of a circle found in Jyeshthadeva's (c. 1500 - 1575 CE) Yuktibhasha which is based on method (i) for computing the arcsin function. All methods have been illustrated with numerical examples. A surprising by-product of the investigation is a totally unexpected appearance of a core integer sequence, namely, the entry A001764 in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequence, while studying the iterative method for computing the arcsin function.

Abstract:This paper aims to give a brief account of the mathematical work of the 7th-century Armenian polymath and natural philosopher Anania Shirakatsi. The three sections of Anania's ``Book of Arithmetic'' -- tables of arithmetic operations, a list of problems and their answers, and a collection of entertaining puzzles -- are presented and discussed, the focus being on the problems and solutions. A close examination of the structure of these problems reveals that Anania's proficiency in arithmetic was considerably more sophisticated than their mathematical contents might suggest. The geography of Anania's problems is illustrated through two maps highlighting the locations referenced within these problems.

On formal verification of arithmetic-based cryptographic primitives

Abstract:Cryptographic primitives are fundamental for information security: they are used as basic components for cryptographic protocols or public-key cryptosystems. In many cases, their security proofs consist in showing that they are reducible to computationally hard problems. Those reductions can be subtle and tedious, and thus not easily checkable. On top of the proof assistant Coq, we had implemented in previous work a toolbox for writing and checking game-based security proofs of cryptographic primitives. In this paper we describe its extension with number-theoretic capabilities so that it is now possible to write and check arithmetic-based cryptographic primitives in our toolbox. We illustrate our work by machine checking the game-based proofs of unpredictability of the pseudo-random bit generator of Blum, Blum and Shub, and semantic security of the public-key cryptographic scheme of Goldwasser and Micali.

Abstract:Above is the title of the talk that Professor Ravindra Kulkarni asked me to give. It is a tall order as I am not a professionally trained historian, although I like to read history in my leisure. Naturally, I am more familiar with the mathematical achievements of China than of other countries. In reading through some of the writings by Western historians on mathematics, I am often surprised by the somewhat biased discussions towards the mathematical achievements of Asia. There is no question that the ancient Greeks made numerous fundamental contributions to mathematics, as we can see many of them in use in our present day. However, many of the Greek manuscripts were partially destroyed during the early centuries, and therefore, it takes great efforts to identify the form of the original manuscripts. The Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs and the Moors all spent much efforts to translate and circulate the classic Greek manuscripts. Often, great ancient books incorporate a collection of many people’s works and were sometimes edited by a number of authors. Commenting on the Euclid’s Elements (believed to be written around 300 BC), the Greek mathematician Proclus of fifth century AD wrote: “Euclid, who put together the Elements, collecting many of Eudoxus’ theorems, perfecting many of Theaetetus’, and also bringing to irrefragable demonstration the things which were only somewhat loosely proved by his predecessors.” There are copies of Euclid’s Elements in Greek that are in the Vatican Library of the Holy See and the Bodleian Library of Oxford University. However, they are not complete and of variable quality. (See a fragment of the Elements from around 100 AD in Figure 1. Many hypotheses have been put forth on the contents of the original text based on translations and originals. Similarly, the origins of ancient Chinese books of mathematics such as the Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art are difficult to know for sure. Most likely, the Nine Chapters is an accumulation of works of many generations and was updated by many people. The recent discovery of an old book dated around 186 BC showed some form of the preliminary version of the Nine Chapters. There are several outstanding contributions in mathematics that appeared in different cultures. The most notable is the Pythagorean theorem. Pythagoras is believed to be born between 580 to 568 BC. This is not much later than the time when the Egyptian papyrus was introduced into Greece around 650 BC. It was said that he traveled to Egypt, Babylon and perhaps even India. Since there are ancient records of the Pythagorean triples in all these countries besides China, it is likely that Pythagoras learned the statement of his theorem from these countries. On the other hand, his great contribution is that he is the first one who proved the theorem. In fact, the concept of a proof based on formal logic found in Greek mathematics is rather unique as compared with other countries. It may be a mystery that countries far apart discovered the same theorem at different levels of depth.

Abstract:This article aims to demonstrate the application of Fermat’s theorem in cryptography. With the development of technology, we have access to more and more information, and the necessity of encryption has also increased. As a mainstream public key cryptography algorithm, RSA encryption will demonstrate the application of Fermat’s theorem in RSA encryption in this article. To achieve this, I will introduce cryptography and Fermat’s theorem separately. Then, I will explain how the RSA encryption algorithm and Fermat’s theorem are applied to the RSA encryption algorithm. Finally, I will demonstrate it using Python. The theoretical proof and encryption process were elaborated on through empirical Python programming examples. Then, I will discuss whether RSA encryption is safe. Finally, I will give my conclusion.
