Abstract:In 1991 the first public key protocol involving automaton groups has been proposed. In this paper we give a survey about algorithmic problems around automaton groups which may have potential applications in cryptography. We then present a new public key protocol based on the conjugacy search problem in some families of automaton groups. At the end we offer open problems that could be of interest of group theorists and computer scientists in this direction.

Abstract:In this survey, we address the worst-case, average-case, and generic-case time complexity of the word problem and some other algorithmic problems in several classes of groups and show that it is often the case that the average-case complexity of the word problem is linear with respect to the length of an input word, which is as good as it gets if one considers groups given by generators and defining relations. At the same time, there are other natural algorithmic problems, for instance, the geodesic (decision) problem or Whitehead's automorphism problem, where the average-case time complexity can be sublinear, even constant.

Cryptanalysis of some Nonabelian Group-Based Key Exchange Protocols

Abstract:In the recently emerging field of nonabelian group-based cryptography, a prominently used one-way function is the Conjugacy Search Problem (CSP), and two important classes of platform groups are polycyclic and matrix groups. In this paper, we discuss the complexity of the conjugacy search problem (CSP) in these two classes of platform groups using the three protocols in [10], [26], and [29] as our starting point. We produce a polynomial time solution for the CSP in a finite polycyclic group with two generators, and show that a restricted CSP is reducible to a DLP. In matrix groups over finite fields, we usedthe Jordan decomposition of a matrix to produce a polynomial time reduction of an A-restricted CSP, where A is a cyclic subgroup of the general linear group, to a set of DLPs over an extension of Fq. We use these general methods and results to describe concrete cryptanalysis algorithms for these three systems. In particular, we show that in the group of invertible matrices over finite fields and in polycyclic groups with two generators, a CSP where conjugators are restricted to a cyclic subgroup is reducible to a set of O(n2) discrete logarithm problems. Using our general results, we demonstrate concrete cryptanalysis algorithms for each of these three schemes. We believe that our methods and findings are likely to allow for several other heuristic attacks in the general case.

Abstract:Abstract“Mirror Theory” is the theory that evaluates the number of solutions of affine systems of equalities (=)$$({=})$$ and non equalities (≠$$\ne $$) in finite groups. It is deeply related to the security and attacks of many generic cryptographic secret key schemes, for example random Feistel schemes (balanced or unbalanced), Misty schemes, Xor of two pseudo-random bijections to generate a pseudo-random function etc. In this paper we will assume that the groups are abelian. Most of time in cryptography the group is ((Z/2Z)n,⊕)$$((\mathbb {Z}/2\mathbb {Z})^n, \oplus )$$ and we will concentrate this paper on these cases. We will present here general definitions, some theorems, and many examples and computer simulations.

Abstract:This paper contains a survey of supersingular isogeny graphs associated to supersingular elliptic curves and their various applications to cryptography. Within limitation of space, we attempt to address a broad audience and make this part widely accessible. For those graphs we also present three recent results and sketch their proofs. We then discuss a generalization to superspecial isogeny graphs associated to superspecial abelian varieties with real multiplication. These graphs were introduced by Charles, Goren and Lauter and so our discussion is brief. Motivated by their cryptographic applications, we prove a general theorem concerning generation of lattices over totally real fields by elements of specified norm. Throughout the paper we have attempted to clarify certain considerations that are either vaguely stated in the literature, or are folklore. We hope this paper will be useful both to a novice wishing to familiarize themselves with this very active area, and to the expert who may enjoy some vignettes and an overview of some new results.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to give an overview over the theory of abelian varieties, with main focus on Jacobian varieties of curves reaching from well-known results till to latest developments and their usage in cryptography. In the first part we provide the necessary mathematical background on abelian varieties, their torsion points, Honda-Tate theory, Galois representations, with emphasis on Jacobian varieties and hyperelliptic Jacobians. In the second part we focus on applications of abelian varieties on cryptography and treating separately, elliptic curve cryptography, genus 2 and 3 cryptography, including Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange, index calculus in Picard groups, isogenies of Jacobians via correspondences and applications to discrete logarithms. Several open problems and new directions are suggested.

Abstract:Most of current public key cryptosystems would be vulnerable to the attacks of the future quantum computers. Post-quantum cryptography offers mathematical methods to secure information and communications against such attacks, and therefore has been receiving a significant amount of attention in recent years. Lattice-based cryptography, built on the mathematical hard problems in (high-dimensional) lattice theory, is a promising post-quantum cryptography family due to its excellent efficiency, moderate size and strong security. This survey aims to give a general overview on lattice-based cryptography. To this end, the authors begin with the introduction of the underlying mathematical lattice problems. Then they introduce the fundamental cryptanalytic algorithms and the design theory of lattice-based cryptography.

Abstract:In the 1940's, Shannon applied his information theory to build a mathematical foundation for classical cryptography which studies how information can be securely encrypted and communicated. In the internet age, Turing's theory of computation has been summoned to augment Shannon's model and create new frameworks, under which numerous cryptographic applications have blossomed. Fundamental concepts, such as ``information" and ``knowledge transfer", often need to be re-examined and reformulated. The amalgamation process is still on-going in view of the many unsolved security issues. In this talk we give a brief overview of the background, and discuss some of the recent developments in complexity-based cryptography. We also raise some open questions and explore directions for future work.

Abstract:The security of widely-used public-key cryptographic protocols like RSA, Diffie–Hellman key exchange and the Digital Signature Algorithm (DSA) is under threat due to the emergence of quantum computers. Shor's groundbreaking quantum algorithm poses a significant risk by efficiently factoring large integers into their prime factors, compromising RSA security. Additionally, it solves the Discrete Logarithm Problem, impacting certain Diffie–Hellman-based cryptosystems and digital signatures. Given this, it is imperative to enhance our current cryptographic tools for the post-quantum era, aiming to make it impractical, even with quantum algorithms, to breach the security of new cryptosystems. Prominent alternatives include elliptic curve and lattice-based cryptography, with exploration into other algebraic systems featuring difficult problems to ensure security. This paper establishes that systems based on the difficulty of inverting group ring elements are not quantum-resistant.

Abstract:Abstract: This research paper surveys the landscape of cryptography, encompassing historical origins and modern applications. Beginning with foundational concepts, it explores encryption, decryption, ciphers, and keys, spanning symmetric and asymmetric cryptography. Historical context unfolds, tracing cryptography from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs to Julius Caesar's cipher. The study then transitions to contemporary subjects. Elliptic Curves and Cryptography are investigated, showcasing their significance in secure communication, demonstrating ECC key exchange and AES-GCM encryption using python and Comparative analysis of ECC, RSA, and Diffie-Hellman sheds light on their performance. Zero-Knowledge Proofs are introduced as tools for privacy-preserving verification followed by an exploration of various Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) protocols. By presenting practical implementation examples using Python, the paper illustrates how these proofs can be applied in real-world scenarios. Random Number Generation is examined and distinction between pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) and cryptographically secure PRNGs (CSPRNGs) is emphasized conducting a thorough comparative analysis of PRNGs and CSPRNGs, considering factors like correlation, independence, periodicity, and entropy. Furthermore, the section evaluates the performance of different random number generation techniques. Fully Homomorphic Encryption emerges as a groundbreaking concept, discussing its mathematical properties, practical implementation, parameter selection, and optimization techniques enabling computation on encrypted data. Cryptographic Secret Sharing Schemes are explored for secure information distribution. The paper concludes by delving into the Chinese Remainder Theorem's applications within modern cryptographic protocols, particularly in RSA decryption and the integration factorization process of the RSA public key cryptosystem. It also provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical foundations of primality testing, a pivotal aspect of the RSA algorithm. Abstract:Many fast quantum algorithms,which cannot be solved efficiently by classical probabilistic algorithms,can be reduced to the discussion of hidden subgroup problems. The quantum algorithms of hidden subgroup problems are reviewed and the advantages of quantum algorithm over group are analyzed in the paper. This paper surveys the mod- ern cryptosystems that can be broken by quantum hidden subgroup algorithms in polynomial time. Limits of the hid- den subgroup problems quantum algorithms are also discussed.

Abstract:We suggest the usage of algebraic subsets instead of subgroups in public-key cryptography. In particular, we present the subset version of two protocols introduced by Shpilrain and Ushakov with some examples in ascending HNN-extensions of free-abelian groups and discuss their resistance to length and distance based attacks. We also introduce several new group theoretic problems arising from this work.

Abstract:This survey paper concerns mainly with some asymptotic topological properties of finitely presented discrete groups: quasi-simple filtration (QSF), geometric simple connectivity (GSC), topological inverse-representations, and the notion of easy groups. As we will explain, these properties are central in the theory of discrete groups seen from a topological viewpoint at infinity. Also, we shall outline the main steps of the achievements obtained in the last years around the very general question whether or not all finitely presented groups satisfy these conditions.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, the family of public-key cryptosystems, a fundamental breakthrough in modern cryptography in the late 1970s, has become an increasingly integral part of our communication networks. The Internet, as well as other communication systems, relies principally on the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, RSA encryption, and digital signatures using DSA, ECDSA, or related algorithms. The security of these cryptosystems depends on the difficulty of certain number-theoretic problems, such as integer factorization or the discrete log problem. In 1994 Peter Shor showed that quantum computers can solve each of these problems in polynomial time, thus rendering the security of all cryptosystems based on such assumptions impotent. A large international community has emerged to address this issue in the hope that our public-key infrastructure may remain intact by utilizing new quantum-resistant primitives. In the academic world, this new science bears the moniker Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

Abstract:Machine learning techniques have had a long list of applications in recent years. However, the use of machine learning in information and network security is not new. Machine learning and cryptography have many things in common. The most apparent is the processing of large amounts of data and large search spaces. In its varying techniques, machine learning has been an interesting field of study with massive potential for application. In the past three decades, machine learning techniques, whether supervised or unsupervised, have been applied in cryptographic algorithms, cryptanalysis, steganography, among other data-security-related applications. This paper presents an updated survey of applications of machine learning techniques in cryptography and cryptanalysis. The paper summarizes the research done in these areas and provides suggestions for future directions in research.

Abstract:With the ever-growing concern for internet security, the field of quantum cryptography emerges as a promising solution for enhancing the security of networking systems. In this paper, 20 notable papers from leading conferences and journals are reviewed and categorized based on their focus on various aspects of quantum cryptography, including key distribution, quantum bit commitment, post quantum cryptography, and counterfactual quantum key distribution. The paper explores the motivations and challenges of employing quantum cryptography, addressing security and privacy concerns along with existing solutions. Secure key distribution, a critical component in ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of transmitted information over a network, is emphasized in the discussion. The survey examines the potential of quantum cryptography to enable secure key exchange between parties, even when faced with eavesdropping, and other applications of quantum cryptography. Additionally, the paper analyzes the methodologies, findings, and limitations of each reviewed study, pinpointing trends such as the increasing focus on practical implementation of quantum cryptography protocols and the growing interest in postquantum cryptography research. Furthermore, the survey identifies challenges and open research questions, including the need for more efficient quantum repeater networks, improved security proofs for continuous variable quantum key distribution, and the development of quantum resistant cryptographic algorithms.
