Abstract:By means of a nested sequence of some critical pieces constructed by Kozlovski, Shen, and van Strien, and by using a covering lemma recently proved by Kahn and Lyubich, we prove that a component of the filled-in Julia set of any polynomial is a point if and only if its forward orbit contains no periodic critical components. It follows immediately that the Julia set of a polynomial is a Cantor set if and only if each critical component of the filled-in Julia set is aperiodic. This result was a conjecture raised by Branner and Hubbard in 1992.

Abstract:We studied the rational realization problem for sub-hyperbolic semi-rational branched coverings. By using the shielding ring lemma, we are able to give a direct proof of CJS’s Theorem following the lines of the proof of Thurston’s Theorem given in the paper of Douady-Hubbard.

Abstract:In 1980's, Thurston established a combinatorial characterization for post-critically finite rational maps among post-critically finite branched coverings of the two sphere to itself. A completed proof was written by Douady and Hubbard in their paper [A. Douady, J.H. Hubbard, A proof of Thurston's topological characterization of rational functions, Acta Math. 171 (1993) 263–297]. This criterion was then extended by Cui, Jiang, and Sullivan to sub-hyperbolic rational maps among sub-hyperbolic semi-rational branched coverings of the two sphere to itself. The goal of this paper is to present a new but simpler proof for the combinatorial characterization of sub-hyperbolic rational maps by adapting some arguments in the proof in Douady and Hubbard's paper.

Abstract:William Thurston (1946-2012) gave a combinatorial characterization for generic branched self-coverings of the two-sphere by associating a planar graph to them <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" href="https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.1502.04760</a>. By generalizing the notion of local balancing, the author extends the Thurston result to encompass any branched covering of the two-sphere. As an application, we supply a lower bound for the number of equivalence classes of real rational functions for each given ramification profile. The theorem version that we prove concerns generic rational functions, assuring that if all critical points of that function are real, then we can transform it into a rational map with real coefficients by post-composition with an automorphism of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{1}$. The proof we present is constructive and founded on elementary arguments.}

Abstract:For a post-critically finite branched covering of the sphere that is a subdivision map of a finite subdivision rule, we define non-expanding spines which determine the existence of a Levy cycle in a non-exhaustive semi-decidable algorithm. Especially when a finite subdivision rule has polynomial growth of edge subdivisions, the algorithm terminates very quickly, and the existence of a Levy cycle is equivalent to the existence of a Thurston obstruction. To show the equivalence between Levy and Thurston obstructions, we generalize the arcs intersecting obstruction theorem by Pilgrim and Tan [Combining rational maps and controlling obstructions. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.18(1) (1998), 221–245] to a graph intersecting obstruction theorem. As a corollary, we prove that for a pair of post-critically finite polynomials, if at least one polynomial has core entropy zero, then their mating has a Levy cycle if and only if the mating has a Thurston obstruction.

Abstract:In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed Herman map is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result is motivated by a non-expanding version of McMullen's problem, and Thurston's theory on characterization of rational maps. It enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for rational maps with Herman rings.
On the Brauer-Manin Obstruction Applied to Ramified Covers

Abstract:The Brauer-Manin obstruction is used to explain the failure of the local-global principle for algebraic varieties. In 1999 Skorobogatov gave the first example of a variety that does not satisfy the local-global principle which is not explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. He did so by applying the Brauer-Manin obstruction to \'etale covers of the variety, and thus defining a finer obstruction. In 2008 Poonen gave the first example of failure of the local-global principle which cannot be explained for by Skorobogatov's \'etale-Brauer obstruction. However, Poonen's construction was not accompanied by a definition of a new finer obstruction. In this paper I shall present a possible definition for such an obstruction by allowing to apply the Brauer-Manin obstruction to some ramified covers as well, and show that this new obstruction can explain Poonen counterexample in the case of a totally imaginary number field.

Abstract:By employing methods from complex analysis and topology, we have established a criterion for the existence of specific types of branched covers between 2-spheres. This criterion generalizes the results previously obtained by Jiang (2004), Pervova-Petronio (2006), Zhu (2019), and Wei-Wu-Xu (2024). As an application of our findings, we introduce several new types of exceptional branching datum.

Abstract:Greene and Owens explore cubiquitous lattices as an obstruction to rational homology 3-spheres bounding rational homology 4-balls. The purpose of this article is to better understand which sublattices of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ are cubiquitous with the aim of effectively using their cubiquity obstruction. We develop a geometric obstruction (called the Wu obstruction) to cubiquity and use it as tool to completely classify which sublattices with orthogonal bases are cubiquitous. We then apply this result the double branched covers of alternating connected sums of torus links. Finally, we explore how the Wu obstruction can be used in conjunction with contractions to obstruct the cubiquity of infinite families of lattices.

Abstract:Every Thurston map on a -sphere induces a pull-back operation on Jordan curves , where is the postcritical set of f. Here the isotopy class (relative to ) only depends on the isotopy class . We study this operation for Thurston maps with four postcritical points. In this case, a Thurston obstruction for the map f can be seen as a fixed point of the pull-back operation. We show that if a Thurston map f with a hyperbolic orbifold and four postcritical points has a Thurston obstruction, then one can 'blow up' suitable arcs in the underlying -sphere and construct a new Thurston map for which this obstruction is eliminated. We prove that no other obstruction arises and so is realized by a rational map. In particular, this allows for the combinatorial construction of a large class of rational Thurston maps with four postcritical points. We also study the dynamics of the pull-back operation under iteration. We exhibit a subclass of our rational Thurston maps with four postcritical points for which we can give positive answer to the global curve attractor problem.

Abstract:We consider closed orientable 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds which are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere, with branching set being a two-bridge knot (or link). We establish two-sided linear bounds depending on the order of the covering for the Matveev complexity of the covering manifold. The lower estimate uses the hyperbolic volume and results of Cao-Meyerhoff and Gueritaud-Futer (who recently improved previous work of Lackenby), while the upper estimate is based on an explicit triangulation, which also allows us to give a bound on the Delzant T-invariant of the fundamental group of the manifold.

Abstract:In this note we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a fiber preserving branched covering between two closed, orientable Seifert manifolds (for sufficiency we need the additional assumption that the genus of the base orbifold of the target manifold greater than or equal to 1). Combining this with two theorems of Rong we get a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a nonzero degree map between two such manifolds.

Abstract:We provide an alternative proof of a sufficient condition for the fundamental group of the $n^{th}$ cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ along a prime knot $K$ to be left-orderable, which is originally due to Boyer-Gordon-Watson. As an application of this sufficient condition, we show that for any $(p,q)$ two-bridge knot, with $p\equiv 3 \text{ mod } 4$, there are only finitely many cyclic branched covers whose fundamental groups are not left-orderable. This answers a question posed by D{\c a}bkowski, Przytycki and Togha.

Double covers of smooth quadric threefolds with Artin-Mumford obstructions to rationality

Abstract:We study obstructions to rationality on a nodal Fano threefold $M$ that is a double cover of a smooth quadric threefold ramified over an intersection with a quartic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. We prove that if $M$ admits an Artin--Mumford obstruction to rationality then it lies in one of three explicitly described families. Conversely, a general element of any of these families admits an Artin--Mumford obstruction to rationality. Only one of these three families was known before; other two families of nodal Fano threefolds with obstructions to rationality are new.

Abstract:This article presents an alternate way to prove a result originally proven by Harvey, Kawamuro, and Plamenvskaya in \cite{HaKaPl}. We accomplish this by explicitly constructing an overtwisted disk in the $p$-fold cyclic branched cover of $S^3$ with the standard contact structure branched along a carefully selected transverse knot. Furthermore, by utilizing this construction of the overtwisted disk, we can see that the overtwisted disk is contained in the complement of the branch locus.

Remarks on the sections of universal hyperelliptic curves

Abstract:In this paper, we study the obstruction for the sections of the universal hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 3$. The obstruction of our interest comes from the relative completion of the hyperelliptic mapping class groups and the Lie algebra of the unipotent completion of the fundamental group of the configuration space of a compact oriented surface. Using the obstruction, we prove that the Birman exact sequence for the hyperelliptic mapping class groups does not split for $g\geq 3$.

Abstract:In this text we investigate the good behaviour of the elementary obstruction, introduced by Colliot-Thelene and Sansuc. This is an obstruction to the existence of a rational points on certain algebraic varieties. Assuming some conditions on the Picard group, we prove that the elementary obstruction behaves well under the Weil restriction of a variety.

Abstract:We describe an application of tropical moduli spaces to complex dynamics. A post-critically finite branched covering $\varphi$ of $S^2$ induces a pullback map on the Teichm\"uller space of complex structures of $S^2$; this descends to an algebraic correspondence on the moduli space of point-configurations of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1$. We make a case for studying the action of the tropical moduli space correspondence by making explicit the connections between objects that have come up in one guise in tropical geometry and in another guise in complex dynamics. For example, a Thurston obstruction for $\varphi$ corresponds to a ray that is fixed by the tropical moduli space correspndence, and scaled by a factor $\ge 1$. This article is intended to be accessible to algebraic and tropical geometers as well as to complex dynamicists.

Abstract:For a branched cover between two closed orientable surfaces, the Riemann-Hurwitz formula relates the Euler characteristics of the surfaces, the total degree of the cover, and the total length of the partitions of the degree given by the local degrees at the preimages of the branching points. A very old problem asks whether a collection of partitions of an integer having the appropriate total length (that we call a candidate cover) always comes from some branched cover. The answer is known to be in the affirmative whenever the candidate base surface is not the 2-sphere, while for the 2-sphere exceptions do occur. A long-standing conjecture however asserts that when the candidate degree is a prime number, a candidate cover is always realizable. In this paper we analyze the question from the point of view of the geometry of 2-orbifolds, and we provide strong supporting evidence for the conjecture. In particular, we exhibit three different sequences of candidate covers, indexed by their degree, such that for each sequence: (1) The degrees giving realizable covers have asymptotically zero density in the naturals; (2) Each prime degree gives a realizable cover.
