Abstract:This paper analyzes the received power distribution of a generalized indoor visible light communication (VLC) system. The generalization includes: both ceiling-mounted and wall-mounted layouts are considered on the transmitting end to cover some special scenarios; a generally applicable sum-of-sine luminous intensity pattern (SSLIP) is used to fit light emitting diodes (LEDs)' radiation curve; the receiver is considered to have a large light receiving area (LRA) with non-uniformly distributed received power. Through mathematical calculation, the expression of received power at any point of the room is derived. Using the expression, the impact of transmitting LEDs' radiation pattern on received power performance is investigated. It is suggested that in the ceiling-mounted scenario, the LED transmitters with sharp luminous intensity patterns have bigger received power variations and shorter optimal receiving distances. In the wall-mounted case in contrast, sharp luminous intensity patterns lead to smaller received power variations and longer optimal receiving distances.

Abstract:Due to limited interference range, the advantage of visible light communication (VLC) over wireless fidelity (WiFi) lies more in the unit-area transmission rate rather than the single-link transmission rate. To characterize the achievable transmission rate per unit area, we consider an indoor downlink VLC network with dense attocell configuration for the transmitters with single-color light-emitting diode (LED) and multi-color LEDs, assuming binomial distributed users. We divide each attocell into central region and boundary region, and propose the transmission protocols based on such attocell division. We optimize the LED half-power angle to maximize the mean achievable transmission rate per unit area. More specifically, we investigate the rates of cell-center and cell-boundary users under fairness consideration for the single LED transmitter system. We characterize the mean achievable transmission rate per unit area under the white light constraints in the multiple LEDs transmitter system. The performance of the proposed transmission protocols is evaluated by numerical results.
Energy Efficiency Optimization Method of WDM Visible Light Communication System for Indoor Broadcasting Networks

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel approach to optimize energy efficiency in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) Visible Light Communication (VLC) systems designed for indoor broadcasting networks. A physics-based LED model is integrated into system energy efficiency optimization, enabling quantitative analysis of the critical issue of VLC energy efficiency: the nonlinear interplay between illumination and communication performance. The optimization jointly incorporates constraints on communication quality of each channel, and illumination performance, standardized by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). The formulated nonlinear optimization problem is solved by the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) algorithm in an experiment-based simulation. An integrated Red-Green-Blue-Yellow Light Emitting Diode (RGBY-LED) is measured for model calibration and three different scenarios are simulated to evaluate the generality of the proposed method. Results demonstrate a double enhancement in performance and a high versatility in accommodating various scenarios. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of balancing communication and illumination imperatives in VLC systems, challenging conventional perceptions focused solely on minimizing power consumption.

Abstract:High efficiency LEDs are widely used to replace fluorescent lamps due to outstanding energy efficiency, long operational life and affordable manufacturing cost. LED contains dual fundamental applications, which are lighting illumination and Visible Light Communication (VLC). Although VLC provides several advantages when compared with RF wireless communication, duplex communication of VLC can be problematic. Hybrid visible light communication (HVLC) is proposed to solve the limitation of VLC and fulfil mobile internet requirement which integrates VLC for downlink and Wi-Fi for uplink. Visual effect based on interior design criteria is taken into account when users replace fluorescent lamp with LED. Thus, the project investigates the optimal condition between the lighting requirement and data connectivity. Two case studies are chosen to demonstrate our proposed optimization scheme namely school hall design (square topology) and hotel design (ring topology). A linear optimization scheme is proposed for received power among the mobile users in school hall (square topology) and hotel lobby (ring topology). This technique is addressed for a practical room scenario of dimension 30 m x 30 m x 3 m where 90 users are randomly generated with different positions. Light sources placement also affected the performance of VLC. Based on our simulation, square topology have higher signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) if compared to ring topology.

Abstract:Visible-light communication (VLC) will be deployed in various indoor environments, including those requiring different lighting colors, which imposes the needs for transmission optimization under certain lighting constraints. This work establishes a framework for the transmission power and rate optimization, for light emitting diode (LED)-based VLC systems. We describe the system model of LED-based color-division VLC system, which incorporates the transmission power spectral, the receiving optical filters, the human eye perception, and the lighting constraints. Then we formulate the corresponding power and rate optimization problems, for both point-to-point communication system and broadcast communication system. More specifically, for a point-to-point communication system, it maximizes the transmission rate subject to the transmission power constraint and the lighting constraint; and for a broadcast system, it minimizes the total transmission power subject to some quality of service (QoS) constraint across all receivers. It is observed that the optimal symbol modulation power allocation scheme significantly outperforms the equal power allocation scheme.

Abstract:As a combination of lighting and optical communication, to broaden the spectrum resource, green energy-saving new wireless communication technology, LED visible light communication(VLC) technology based application in indoor positioning system has recently become a very hot research topic. The domestic and foreign research on LED visible light communication in indoor positioning technology is divided into non-imaging positioning technology and imaging positioning technology. Among them, there are four non-imaging positioning technology methods: triangulation method, scenario analysis, proximity method and hybrid techniques with VLC and Ad Hoc wireless network. This article provides an overview of these two technologies, and their performance are compared. Finally the outlook for future research are discussed.

Abstract:Indoor visible light communication (VLC) techniques are expected to utilize LED based infrastructure to provide data transmission and general illuminance. To ensure full coverage of a lighting area, multiple LED lamps must be employed. Each lamp consists of an array of LEDs. In typical VLC channel modeling, each array is usually treated as a single point source. This simplification offers very low computational complexity, but may lead to modeling inaccuracy in some cases. This paper compares different LED array approximation schemes in terms of channel characteristics. Either the actual structure of each array or an approximated constellation is considered. Signals from different sources undergo multiple reflections up to certain order. Numerical results show that different models give almost similar received optical power distribution across the lighting area, but significantly different average root mean square delay spread profile and thus channel bandwidth in the investigated cases.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel polygonal layout based on rectangular plane stereo space. The illumination and signal‐to‐noise ratio of polygonal layout and circular layout is simulated in a 5 m × 4 m × 3 m room; The simulation results show that: compared with the illuminance uniformity of the circular layout of 0.67, the illuminance uniformity of the polygonal layout reaches 0.81, which is improved by 20.90%. The position and power of the polygonal layout are further optimized respectively by particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the illuminance uniformity and signal‐to‐noise ratio quality factors (Q) of the polygonal layout can be increased from 0.81 and 19.31 to 0.88 and 37.38 after optimization, respectively. The illuminance uniformity increased by 8.64%, and the Q increased by 93.58%. The experimental system of polygonal layout optimized by PSO is built, by comparing the simulation and experimental results, the average illuminance error of the simulation and experiment is 10.58%, the illuminance uniformity error is 5.68%, and the illuminance distribution trend is consistent.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an integrated visible light positioning and communication (VLPC) system with a single LED-lamp. First, by leveraging the fact that the VLC channel model is a function of the receiver's location, we propose a system model that estimates the channel state information (CSI) based on the positioning information without transmitting pilot sequences. Second, we derive the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) on the positioning error variance and a lower bound on the achievable rate with on-off keying modulation. Third, based on the derived performance metrics, we optimize the power allocation to minimize the CRLB, while satisfying the rate outage probability constraint. To tackle this non-convex optimization problem, we apply the worst-case distribution of the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) and the block coordinate descent (BCD) methods to obtain the feasible solutions. Finally, the effects of critical system parameters, such as outage probability, rate threshold, total power threshold, are revealed by numerical results.

A New Design of Light Source Arrangements for Indoor Visible Light Communication

Abstract:A new design of light source arrangements for indoor visible light communication is proposed in this paper to obtain uniform lighting conditions and stable communication performance. The models of illuminance and received signal to noise ratio are established in a room. The room size is 5 m×5 m×3 m. A 2-factor of signal to noise ratio distribution is introduced to evaluate the fairness of the whole system to all users. LED array filled with LEDs with transmitted power as small as 20mW now is often used in indoor visible light communication as the light source. The distribution of illuminance shows that the LED arrays can supply sufficient illuminance but the standard deviation is very large. The fluctuation of the received signal to noise ratio distribution is strong, which is disadvantageous for communication. The values of illuminance under the LED arrays source conditions are big while the values are very small in the edge region of the room. In view of this situation we propose to place individual LEDs with transmission power of 1W evenly on the ceiling instead of LED arrays. The interval is 0.5m and the results show that the standard deviation of illuminance is decreased but the illuminance at some locations is too small to satisfy the lighting requirements. So we optimize the design and replace the 1W LEDs at the edge of the room with 2W LEDs while the interval remains the same. It turns out that the standard deviation of the illuminance has a reduction of 63.2% compared with that using the LED arrays as the light source. Meanwhile the 2-factor under this source arrangement has been increased by a factor of 2.08 compared with that under the LED arrays source conditions.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), primarily based on light emitting diode (LED), supports the information transmission and networking through the existing infrastructure of the illumination network.The constellation optimization and the power resource optimization were investigated under lighting constraints with multiple LEDs for indoor environment.Moreover, the optical intelligent reflection surface was also researched to regulate reflection channels dynamically, improving both the transmission data rate and the coverage of the VLC system.In the meantime, the preliminary study revealed the flicker effect of low-frequency modulated optical signals on the human body, and the results suggest that the LED photo-biological effect should be considered comprehensively in the future signal design.

Abstract:Data transmission with RGB LEDs is attracting significant research interest in VLC (Visible Light Communication). We consider the power optimization under brightness and communication requirements for RGB LEDs, and model the color constraint using the MacAdam ellipse instead of a fixed point in the chromaticity diagram. Then an optimization problem is formulated to determine the transmission power consumption and the corresponding coordinates in the chromaticity diagram. We propose a novel two-step algorithm to solve the optimization problem with lower implementation complexity. Numerical results show that the proposed approach shows the same performance as the optimal solution using a brute-force method, and requires the lower power consumption using MacAdam ellipse instead of merely a fixed point in the chromaticity diagram.

Abstract:Visible Light Communication (VLC) based on LEDs has been a hot topic investigated for over a decade. However, most of the research efforts assume the intensity of LED light is constant. This hypothesis is not true when Smart Lighting is introduced to VLC, which requires LEDs to adapt their brightness based on the intensity of natural ambient light. Smart lighting saves power consumption and improves user comfort. However, intensity adaptation severely affects the throughput performance of data communication. In this paper, we propose SmartVLC, a system that can maximize the throughput (benefit communication) while still maintaining the LEDs' illumination function (benefit smart lighting). A novel Adaptive Multiple Pulse Position Modulation (AMPPM) scheme is proposed to support fine-grained dimming levels to avoid flickering while maximizing the throughput under each dimming level. SmartVLC is implemented on off-the-shelf commodity hardware. Several real-life challenges in both hardware and software are addressed to make it a robust real-time system. Comprehensive experiments are carried out to evaluate the system performance under multifaceted scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that SmartVLC supports a communication distance up to 3.6m, and improves the throughput achieved with two state-of-the-art approaches by 40 and 12 percent on average, respectively, without bringing any flickering to users.

Abstract:As Global Positioning System (GPS) cannot provide satisfying performance in indoor environments, indoor positioning technology, which utilizes indoor wireless signals instead of GPS signals, has grown rapidly in recent years. Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) using light devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has been deemed to be a promising candidate in the heterogeneous wireless networks that may collaborate with radio frequencies (RF) wireless networks. In particular, light-fidelity has a great potential for deployment in future indoor environments because of its high throughput and security advantages. This paper provides a comprehensive study of a novel positioning technology based on visible white LED lights, which has attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The essential characteristics and principles of this system are deeply discussed, and relevant positioning algorithms and designs are classified and elaborated. This paper undertakes a thorough investigation into current LED-based indoor positioning systems and compares their performance through many aspects, such as test environment, accuracy, and cost. It presents indoor hybrid positioning systems among VLC and other systems (e.g., inertial sensors and RF systems). We also review and classify outdoor VLC positioning applications for the first time. Finally, this paper surveys major advances as well as open issues, challenges, and future research directions in VLC positioning systems.

Abstract:The design of solid-state lighting is vital, as numerous metrics are involved in their exact positioning, and as it is utilized in various processes, ranging from intelligent buildings to the internet of things (IoT). This work aims to determine the power and delay spread from the light source to the receiver plane. The positions of the light source and receiver were used for power estimation. We focus on analog orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in visible light communication (VLC) and assess the area under the curve (AUC). The proposed system was designed using modulation techniques (i.e., quadrature amplitude modulation; QAM) for visible light communication (VLC) and pulse-width modulation (PWM) for dimming sources. For the positioning and spreading of brightness, the proof-of-concept was weighted equally over the entire area. Therefore, the receiver plane was analyzed, in order to measure the power of each light-emitting diode (LED) in a given area, using the delayed mean square error (MSE). A framework was applied for the placement of LEDs, using full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) parameters with varying distances. Then, the received power was confirmed. The results show that the AUC using DRMS values for LEDs significantly increased (by 30%) when the number of source LEDs was changed from four to three. These results confirm that our system, associated with the simple linear lateration estimator, can achieve better energy consumption.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) is one of the candidates to realize data rates of up to tera-bps in indoor scenarios, and is a popular topic in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, the receiving performance of the VLC channel is affected by relative locations of transceivers directly, while the uniform illumination is also required when the IoT devices can appear anywhere with strong mobility. Consequently, both the illumination uniformity and the average achievable rate are optimized by joint lamp arrangement and power allocation in this article. Moreover, the achievable rate maximization under diverse uniformity constraints is also obtained based on different room sizes and various numbers of lamps. The feasibility and superiority of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated by simulation validations, while the lower and upper bounds of uniformity constraints are explored. Numerical results also show the changing tendency of average achievable rates in multifarious situations, and the proposed schemes realize the tradeoff between uniform illumination and communication performance.
Optimized Base Station Location Planning for Indoor Positioning in Visible Light Communication System

Abstract:Abstract Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging optical communication technology, and indoor positioning of moving target devices is one of most important issues in the VLC system. In this study, we focused on LED base station location planning to improve the accuracy of the positioning method based on the received signal strength intensity (RSS) and the Kalman filter (KF). We developed a new base station location-planning scheme called equilateral triangle distribution. We proved theoretically that the equilateral triangle distribution scheme reduced the positioning error area when compared with the rectangular distribution scheme. The simulation results showed that the measuring error of the equilateral triangle distribution method using KF was less than 5 cm, even when the receiver was located at the boundary of the room. Our method verified that the VLC indoor positioning accuracy can be improved when LED base stations are distributed according to our equilateral triangle distribution scheme.
Indoor Positioning System Based on Visible Light Communication with Gray-Coded Identification

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), as a promising future wireless communication technology, has been considered as an attractive solution for indoor positioning systems. In this paper, a novel indoor visible light positioning system is proposed, where the Gray code is utilized for the positioning identification (ID). Compared with the existing light emitting diode (LED)-ID systems, the proposed scheme can deal with the overlapping area problem where the target receiver detects multiple positioning IDs from neighboring LED lamps. Furthermore, the alternating current in the power line is used for time synchronization to facilitate the indoor localization. Experimental demonstration are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme, which shows that the proposed system can provide superior performance with large positioning range and low implementation complexity.
