Abstract:With the mission's completion, India became only the fourth nation in history to successfully perform a soft landing on the Moon and the first nation to land a spacecraft close to the lunar south pole. The purpose of the article is to present a comprehensive review of the Chandrayaan-3 mission (a sequel operation to Chandrayaan-2) to demonstrate complete capabilities in secure lunar landing and exploration on the Moon's surface. It is equipped with a Vikram lander and Pragyan rover. An in-depth review is carried out to discuss the findings of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The goals of Chandrayaan-3's mission are: (a) to show a safe and soft landing on the surface of the Moon; (b) to showcase roving lunar rover technology; and (c) to carry out in-situ scientific research. The goals are achieved through the lander payloads, which include the Langmuir Probe (LP), Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE), Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA), and Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE) to measure thermal conductivity and temperature. For lunar laser-ranging investigations, the space agency NASA has provided a passive Laser Retroreflector Array. The Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and the Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) are rover payloads that were used to determine the elemental composition close to the landing site. The mission goals are highly accomplished with the successful hop experiment of Vikram on the Chandrayaan-3 mission! As ordered, it raised itself to a height of around 40 cm, turned on its engines, and then made a safe landing between 30 and 40 cm away. To put an end to the controversy, the study finishes with highlights on (a) the significant area of the southernmost polar region of the Moon with latitudes ranging from 60 to 90°S and (b) Shiv Shakti point (coordinates 69.373°S 32.319°E).

Abstract:In situ measurements of planetary surfaces can provide more detailed information about mineralogical composition and elemental distribution than the more commonplace remote sensing. Recently, Santosh Vadawale and colleagues reported early results from the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) experiment aboard the Pragyan rover of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission, with a characterization of the Chandrayaan-3 landing site and what it reveals about lunar history and evolution. The data were collected from a southern high-latitude region of the Moon that was not previously explored by the other lunar missions, which landed between the equatorial and the mid-latitude regions. Individual elements are identified using the measured fluxes of different X-ray lines, corroborated by X-ray fluorescence remote-sensing observations from the Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2 orbiters. The authors are able to constrain the abundance of 12 major and minor elements and several oxides, and find a mixing of ferroan anorthosite and magnesian suite around the landing site, with a very uniform spatial distribution. These observations support the predictions of those lunar magma ocean models that consider a stratified crust with ferroan anorthosite on top of a lower crust dominated by Mg-rich rocks.

Abstract:Mineralogy of the Lunar surface provides important clues for understanding the composition and evolution of the primordial crust in the Earth–Moon system. The primary rock forming minerals on the Moon such as pyroxene, olivine and plagioclase are potential tools to evaluate the Lunar Magma Ocean (LMO) hypothesis. Here we use the data from Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) onboard the Chandrayaan-1 project of India, which provides Visible/Near Infra Red (NIR) spectral data (hyperspectral data) of the Lunar surface to gain insights on the surface mineralogy. Band shaping and spectral profiling methods are used for identifying minerals in five sites: the Moscoviense basin, Orientale basin, Apollo basin, Wegener crater-highland, and Hertzsprung basin. The common presence of plagioclase in these sites is in conformity with the anorthositic composition of the Lunar crust. Pyroxenes, olivine and Fe-Mg-spinel from the sample sites indicate the presence of gabbroic and basaltic components. The compositional difference in pyroxenes suggests magmatic differentiation on the Lunar surface. Olivine contains OH/H2O band, indicating hydrous phase in the primordial magmas.

Abstract:On August 23, 2023, India became the first country to successfully soft-land near the south pole of the moon. The end-to-end trajectory design from Earth-orbit injection to the moon landing was crucial to the overall success of the mission. This paper describes the trajectory design phase, which comprised the target lunar orbit design, the maneuver strategy implemented to acquire the specified orbit, and finally the multiphase lunar landing trajectory design carried out for the powered descent phase of the lander module. The objective of the trajectory design was not only to soft-land on the moon but also to do it at a predefined site when it was illuminated. Based on this design, the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft was launched on July 14, 2023; successfully rendezvoused with the moon on August 5, 2023, as planned; and finally soft-landed near the lunar south pole.

Abstract:The elemental composition of the lunar surface provides insights into mechanisms of the formation and evolution of the Moon 1,2 . The chemical composition of lunar regolith have so far been precisely measured using the samples collected by the Apollo, Luna and Chang'e 5 missions, which are from equatorial to mid-latitude regions 3,4 ; lunar meteorites, whose location of origin on the Moon is unknown 5,6 ; and the in situ measurement from the Chang'e 3 and Chang'e 4 missions 7,8,9 , which are from the mid-latitude regions of the Moon. Here we report the first in situ measurements of the elemental abundances in the lunar southern high-latitude regions by the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) experiment 10 aboard the Pragyan rover of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission. The 23 measurements in the vicinity of the Chandrayaan-3 landing site show that the local lunar terrain in this region is fairly uniform and primarily composed of ferroan anorthosite (FAN), a product of the lunar magma ocean (LMO) crystallization. However, observation of relatively higher magnesium abundance with respect to calcium in APXS measurements suggests the mixing of further mafic material. The compositional uniformity over a few tens of metres around the Chandrayaan-3 landing site provides an excellent ground truth for remote-sensing observations.

Abstract:The Chang'E-6 (CE-6) mission, launched by China on 2024 May 3, marks the first successful retrieval of samples from the farside of the Moon, specifically from the southern mare plain of the Apollo basin within the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin. This study aims to provide a comprehensive geological analysis of the Apollo basin, focusing on the Apollo basin materials that CE-6 may have collected. By examining the regional geology, surface mineralogy, thorium (Th) abundance, and crustal thickness, we seek to understand the implications of these materials for the SPA basin's structure and stratigraphic history. We find that the Apollo basin exhibits significant lateral compositional variations, with Mg-rich noritic materials predominantly in the southwestern portion and more feldspathic materials in the northeast, probably due to the fact that the Apollo basin is situated on different structures of the underlying SPA basin. Those Mg-rich materials, likely representing deep lithologies from local lower crust, are associated with low Th abundance, suggesting a KREEP-poor origin. The inclusion of foreign materials in the CE-6 samples increases the complexity while also enhancing their research potential. In addition to the local mare basalts, Mg-rich noritic materials associated with the Apollo basin and Th-rich materials originating from the SPA basin may also have been collected by CE-6. Laboratory research of these diverse lithologies will contribute to unraveling the characteristics of the farside mantle, the geological history of the giant SPA basin, as well as the cause of the substantial asymmetry between the lunar nearside and farside.

Abstract:The lunar south pole is a region of focused scientific and exploration interest, with several crewed and robotic missions to this region planned within the next decade. Understanding the mineralogy of the region is essential to inform landing site characterization and selection and provides the key context for interpreting samples and in situ observations. At high latitudes, extreme illumination conditions (high phase angles) can negatively impact the data quality of orbital instruments. This is especially true for passive near‐infrared spectrometers such as the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) and the Kaguya Spectral Profiler, which measure the spectral properties of the surface using reflected sunlight. Using Moon Mineralogy Mapper data, we observed that the south polar region is associated with a detectable mafic signature consistent with the presence of pyroxenes. The strongest mafic signatures are associated with the South Pole—Aitken Basin, suggesting that impact melt and basin ejecta from the lower crust and upper mantle are present within this region. This observation is validated in several ways: (a) comparisons between M3 data acquired during different mission phases, (b) comparisons between multiple spectral parameters sensitive to the presence of mafic minerals, (c) comparisons between the north and south lunar polar regions, and (d) comparisons with publicly available Kaguya polar mineralogy maps and Lunar Prospector elemental abundances. We also investigate the nature of an anomalous high‐albedo region within 2–3° of the south pole observed in Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter reflectance data exhibiting a spatially conflicting apparent FeO abundance pattern between several data sets.

Abstract:Lunar igneous activities, including intrusive magmatism and extrusive volcanism, and their products contain significant information about the lunar interior and its thermal state. Their distribution is asymmetrical on the nearside and farside, reflecting the global dichotomy. Samples from the South Pole–Aitken (SPA) basin on the farside hold the key to disclosing the dichotomy conundrum and rebalancing the asymmetrical understandings of the Moon, in addition to previously returned nearside samples (Apollo, Luna, Chang'e-5). For the first time, the Chang'e-6 mission obtained ∼1935.5 g of lunar soils from the farside in the southern Apollo basin, northeast of SPA, opening a window to solve this long-standing question. However, compared with the well-known mare/cryptomare volcanism in SPA, intrusive activity has a much more obscure presence and origin, due to its unclear surface expression, thus impeding the ongoing Chang'e-6 sample analysis, which is therefore emphasized here. We found evidence that intrusive magmatism is extensive across SPA, including Mg-suite intrusions, floor-modified craters, and linear/ring dikes, consistent with its intermediate crustal thickness, where dike intrusion is favored. Intrusive magmatism is abundant in the Apollo basin, where Chang'e-6 landed. Two obscure craters were discovered (Apollo X and Q) with evidence for subsurface intrusions, strongly suggesting the intensive intrusion in the region. Plutonic materials are very likely to be obtained by Chang'e-6, especially the Mg-suite from the western peak ring of the Apollo basin that delivered and mixed in the soils by the Chaffee S crater, whose components might provide critical new insights into their petrogenesis, early lunar evolution, and the origin of dichotomy.

Abstract:The unequal distribution of volcanic products between the Earth-facing lunar side and the farside is the result of a complex thermal history. To help unravel the dichotomy, for the first time a lunar landing mission (Chang'e-4, CE-4) has targeted the Moon's farside landing on the floor of Von Kármán crater (VK) inside the South Pole-Aitken (SPA). We present the first deep subsurface stratigraphic structure based on data collected by the ground-penetrating radar (GPR) onboard the Yutu-2 rover during the initial nine months exploration phase. The radargram reveals several strata interfaces beneath the surveying path: buried ejecta is overlaid by at least four layers of distinct lava flows that probably occurred during the Imbrium Epoch, with thicknesses ranging from 12 m up to about 100 m, providing direct evidence of multiple lava-infilling events that occurred within the VK crater. The average loss tangent of mare basalts is estimated at 0.0040-0.0061.
Chandrayaan-3 Alternate Landing Site: Pre-Landing Characterisation

Abstract:India's third Moon mission Chandrayaan 3 will deploy a lander and a rover at a high latitude location of the Moon enabling us to carry out first ever in-situ science investigations of such a pristine location that will potentially improve our understanding on primary crust formation and subsequent modification processes. The primary landing site (PLS), is situated at 69.367621 degS, 32.348126 degE. As a contingency, an alternate landing site (ALS) was also selected at nearly the same latitude but nearly 450 km west to PLS. In this work, a detailed study of the geomorphology, composition, and temperature characteristics of ALS has been carried out using the best-ever high resolution Chandrayaan 2 OHRC DEMs and Ortho images, datasets obtained from Chandrayaan 1 and on-going Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. For understanding the thermophysical behaviour, we used a well-established thermophysical model. We found that the Chandrayaan 3 ALS is characterised by a smooth topography with an elevated central part. The ALS is a scientifically interesting site with a high possibility of sampling ejecta materials from Tycho and Moretus. Based on the spectral and elemental analysis of the site, Fe is found to be near approx. 4.8 wt.%, with Mg approx. 5 wt.%, and Ca approx. 11 wt.%. Compositionally, ALS is similar to PLS with a highland soil composition. Spatial and diurnal variability of around 40 K and 175 K has been observed in the surface temperatures at ALS. Although belonging to similar location like PLS, ALS showed reduced daytime temperatures and enhanced night-time temperatures compared to PLS, indicating a terrain of distinctive thermophysical characteristics. Like PLS, ALS is also seems to be an interesting site for science investigations and Chandrayaan 3 is expected to provide new insights into the understanding of lunar science even if it happens to land in the alternate landing site.

Abstract:This article examines India's first science lander mission on 22 July 2019, attempting a historic landing on the Lunar South Pole Region. Communication was lost at 2.1 km above the lunar surface during the rough braking phase. The cause of the Chandrayaan 2 lander "Vikram" failure remains undisclosed. Possible factors such as vibrations, thruster issues, and power depletion are considered. Recommendations include backup power sources and direct communication systems for interplanetary missions. Despite the setback, ISRO proposed "Chandrayaan 3" to explore the lunar polar region. Chandrayaan 2's legacy influences future missions, shaping India's aspirations for pioneering space endeavors. Abstract:In the past, clues on the potential radiogenic activity of the lunar interior have been obtained from the isotopic composition of noble gases like Argon. Excess Argon (40) relative to Argon (36), as compared to the solar wind composition, is generally ascribed to the radiogenic activity of the lunar interior. Almost all the previous estimates were based on, 'on-the-spot' measurements from the landing sites. Relative concentration of the isotopes of 40Ar and 36Ar along a meridian by the Chandra's Altitudinal Composition Explorer (CHACE) experiment, on the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) of India's first mission to Moon, has independently yielded clues on the possible spatial heterogeneity in the radiogenic activity of the lunar interior in addition to providing indicative 'antiquity' of the lunar surface along the ground track over the near side of the moon. These results are shown to broadly corroborate the independent topography measurements by the Lunar Laser Ranging Instrument (LLRI) in the main orbiter Chandrayaan-1. The unique combination of these experiments provided high spatial resolution data while indicating the possible close linkages between the lunar interior and the lunar ambience.

Abstract:In January 2019, China's Chang'E-4 probe successfully landed in the Von Kármán crater of the Moon's farside's South Pole-Aitken basin. Till August 2021, the Yutu-2 rover had worked for >32 lunar days. The Visible and Near-infrared Image Spectrometer (VNIS) is one of scientific payloads on board the rover that can collect in-situ spectral data. This provides a unique perspective for investigating the composition of the lunar surface materials. In this work, a local-scale FeO and TiO2 abundance mapping approach based on the in-situ VNIS data was proposed to utilize the fine spectral-spatial hyperspectral information. Improved FeO and TiO2 abundance inversion models were performed on each unshaded pixel to generate abundance maps. Experimental results obtained on 115 VNIS observation data along the Yutu-2's routing path confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach, especially in the complex observation scenarios. Comparing with the in-orbit data products and the in-situ abundance results obtained by the reference methods, the effectiveness of the proposed in-situ FeO and TiO2 abundance mapping approach is validated. Furthermore, the proposed approach allows a detailed analysis of chemical properties and spatial distribution of lunar surface materials, and helps to discover abnormal targets according to the serial spectral observations along the rover's routing path, which reveals the great potential in more precise lunar surface material identification and analysis applications.

Abstract:In 2024 June, China's Chang′e-6 (CE-6) mission successfully returned 1935.3 grams of samples from the lunar farside for the first time. The origin and composition of the unique samples could offer valuable insights into fundamental questions on the Moon's evolutional history. Besides the local materials of mare basalts, a certain quantity of foreign ejecta materials are expected in the samples, while their percentage was mostly overestimated since the influence of impact gardening was not fully considered. In this study, we model the impact gardening process surrounding the CE-6 landing site by numerical simulations. Our simulations show that impact gardening played a key role in overturning the local materials and diluting the foreign ones in the top-meters-deep layer at the landing site. About 90% of the CE-6 drilled samples, which were sampled within the top ∼1 m deep layer, are predicted to be the local intermediate-Ti mare basalts originating in the deeper area of 1–60 m, and the underlying low-Ti basalts may make up <1%. The foreign materials in the CE-6 drilled samples likely constitute a minor portion, with an abundance of ∼3.0%. As the primary contributor (∼2.1%) of foreign materials, Chaffee S ejecta may contain lunar mantle materials excavated by the South Pole–Aitken basin.

Abstract:Chang'e-5 explorer successfully acquired lunar regolith core samples from depths of greater than 1 m of lunar surface. This study analyzed the lunar core drilling process based on the telemetry data, image information, and returned samples to optimize the sampling device design and enhance the understanding of the lunar regolith. In particular, a prediction method for the projected drilling path and local terrain fitting of drilling dip angle was proposed based on the flight events recorded during the core drilling process and the image information acquired before, during, and after sampling. The results revealed that the drilling dip angle of Chang'e-5 was approximately 2.3°, and the deviation of the drilling length and depth was less than 2 mm. For continuous drilling, a fusion method based on telemetry data and image information was applied to determine the demarcation point of drilling with and without the lunar soil. The position of the demarcation point implied that the drilling point remained at approximately 6 mm loose soil, thereby lagging the action of the force response. Additionally, a characteristic parameter comparison method was proposed for the lunar and ground drilling to analyze the status of the lunar soil. Furthermore, the analysis results revealed that the majority of the Chang'e-5 drilling samples were derived from 0–73.8 cm below the lunar surface and few samples were extracted below 73.8 cm, as the drilling encountered several rocky regions. Moreover, the drilling point exhibited two prominent stratification variations at ∼28.7 cm and ∼70 cm below the lunar surface. Ultimately, the preliminary relationship between sample dissected position in soft tube and drilling displacement was analyzed. The segmented estimation results can support research on subsurface lunar soil.

Long-lasting farside volcanism in the Apollo basin: Chang'e-6 landing site

Abstract:A major lunar scientific question is the cause of the paucity of farside mare basalts. The South Pole-Aitken Basin (SPA) is the largest (2400×2050 km) and most ancient lunar impact basin. The Apollo peak-ring basin, the largest impact feature within the SPA, is located on its northeast edge in a transitional zone of crustal thickness and compositions. The Chang'e-6 (CE-6) mission, the first sample-return mission to the lunar farside, is targeted to land in the southern Apollo basin, sampling farside mare basalts with critical insights into early lunar evolution. In preparation for the CE-6 sample return, we conducted a comprehensive study of Apollo basin volcanism. We found that volcanic activity began in the Nectarian Period (∼4.05 Ga) (cryptomaria) and continued into the Eratosthenian Period (∼1.79 Ga). At least two Imbrian-aged episodes of eruptions occurred in the southern part of the Apollo basin where CE-6 is targeted to land. At ∼3.35 Ga, low-Ti (∼3.2 wt %) volcanism was active, and its products covered the entire low topographic region of the southern Apollo basin, between the inner and outer rings. Closely following its eruption at ∼3.07 Ga, high-Ti basalts (∼6.2 wt %) erupted close to the Chaffee S crater and flowed east with decreasing thickness until encountering proto-wrinkle ridges. In addition, volcanic activity in the region is significantly correlated with low crustal thickness, primarily thinned by the SPA and Apollo impact events. For regions of intermediate-thick crust (Oppenheimer crater), dikes stalled under the crater floor, spreading to form sills and a floor-fractured crater. For thin crust regions (Apollo basin interior), dikes erupted directly, forming extensive lava flows. In areas of thick highland crust, we see no evidence of extrusive activity or floor-fractured craters, suggesting that dikes there do not reach the surface and are intrusive. CE-6 samples returned from the unique geological setting will provide significant petrogenetic information to address further the paucity of farside mare basalts and the lunar nearside-farside dichotomy. To solve those scientific questions, the high-Ti mare region in south Apollo basin is recommended as the priority landing site.

Abstract:China's Chang'e‐6 (CE‐6) mission has returned the first‐ever lunar farside samples from a mare plain on the southern Apollo basin floor. The crater statistics of the CE‐6 mare unit and the provenance of the samples are crucial in interpreting the CE‐6 sample analysis results and re‐calibrating the crater chronology function. Here, we conduct a thorough survey of the formation sequence and main source craters of ejecta materials at the sampling area. Our results show that the sampling mare unit has a model age of ∼2.8 Ga and the CE‐6 scooped and drilled samples mainly come from the proximal ejecta of nearby small craters and the local regolith. The total abundance of foreign (non‐mare) materials, primarily from Chaffee S and Vavilov craters, is ∼9.3%. The Chaffee S ejecta may contain lunar upper mantle materials previously excavated by the South Pole‐Aitken impact, which will shed light on the materials of the Moon's interior.
