Abstract:Photomultiplier tube technology has been the photodetector of choice for the technique of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes since its birth more than 50 years ago. Recently, new types of photosensors are being contemplated for the next generation Cherenkov Telescope Array. It is envisioned that the array will be partly composed of telescopes using a Schwarzschild-Couder two mirror design never built before which has significantly improved optics. The camera of this novel optical design has a small plate scale which enables the use of compact photosensors. We present an extensive and detailed study of the two most promising devices being considered for this telescope design: the silicon photomultiplier and the multi-anode photomultiplier tube. We evaluated their most critical performance characteristics for imaging gamma-ray showers, and we present our results in a cohesive manner to clearly evaluate the advantages and disadvantages that both types of device have to offer in the context of GeV-TeV gamma-ray astronomy.

Abstract:A compact modular ring imaging Cherenkov (mRICH) detector has been developed to provide K/ π separation over a momentum coverage of 2 to 10 GeV/c, and an e/ π separation of up to 2.5 GeV/c within the Electron-Ion Collider Generic R&D Consortium (i.e., eRD14 Collaboration). The mRICH detector consists of an aerogel block, a Fresnel lens, a flat-mirror set, and a photosensor plane. In September 2021, an mRICH beam-test was carried out at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab). In this paper, results from JLab beam test will be presented together with future plans for mRICH R&D activities.

BrlAPI: Simple, Portable, Concurrent, Application-level Control of Braille Terminals

Abstract:Screen readers can drive braille devices for allowing visually impaired users to access computer environments, by providing them the same information as sighted users. But in some cases, this view is not easy to use on a braille device. In such cases, it would be much more useful to let applications provide their own braille feedback, specially adapted to visually impaired users. Such applications would then need the ability to output braille ; however, allowing both screen readers and applications access a wide panel of braille devices is not a trivial task. We present an abstraction layer that applications may use to communicate with braille devices. They do not need to deal with the specificities of each device, but can do so if necessary. We show how several applications can communicate with one braille device concurrently, with BrlAPI making sensible choices about which application eventually gets access to the device. The description of a widely used implementation of BrlAPI is included.

Thick GEM-like multipliers - a simple solution for large area UV-RICH detectors

Abstract:We report on the properties of thick GEM-like (THGEM) electron multipliers made of 0.4 mm thick double-sided Cu-clad G-10 plates, perforated with a dense hexagonal array of 0.3 mm diameter drilled holes. Photon detectors comprising THGEMs coupled to semi-transparent CsI photocathodes or reflective ones deposited on the THGEM surface were studied with Ar/CO2 (70:30), Ar/CH4 (95:5), CH4 and CF4. Gains of ~100000 or exceeding 1000000 were reached with single- or double-THGEM, respectively; the signals have 5-10 ns rise times. The electric field configurations at the THGEM electrodes result in an efficient extraction of photoelectrons and their focusing into the holes; this occurs already at rather low gains, below 100. These detectors, with single-photon sensitivity and with expected sub-millimeter localization, can operate at MHz/mm2 rates. We discuss their prospects for large-area UV-photon imaging for RICH.

Abstract:A ring imaging Cherenkov counter, to be read out by four 100-channel PMTs, is a key element of the BRAHMS experiment. We report here the most recent results obtained tested at the BNL AGS using several radiator gases, including the heavy fluorocarbon C4F10. Ring radii were measured for different particles (pions, muons, and electrons) for momenta ranging from 2 to 12 GeV/c employing pure C4F10 as radiator.

Abstract:The RICH detectors of the LHCb experiment provide identification of hadrons produced in high energy proton-proton collisions in the LHC at CERN over a wide momentum range (2 to 100 GeV/c). Cherenkov light is collected on photon detector planes sensitive to single photons. The RICH will be upgraded (in 2019) to read out every bunch crossing, at a rate of 40 MHz. The current hybrid photon detectors (HPD) will be replaced with multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (customisations of the Hamamatsu R11265 and the H12699 MaPMTs). These 8$\times$8 pixel devices meet the experimental requirements thanks to their small pixel size, high gain, negligible dark count rate ($\sim$50 Hz/cm$^2$) and moderate cross-talk. The measured performance of several tubes is reported, together with their long-term stability. A new 8-channel front-end chip, named CLARO, has been designed in 0.35 $\mu$m CMOS AMS technology for the MaPMT readout. The CLARO chip operates in binary mode and combines low power consumption (\hbox{$\sim$1 mW/Ch}), wide bandwidth (baseline restored in $\leq$25 ns) and radiation hardness. A 12-bit digital register permits the optimisation of the dynamic range and the threshold level for each channel and provides tools for the on-site calibration. The design choices and the characterization of the electronics are presented.

Abstract:A prototype of a position sensitive photo-detector with 5.6 x 5.6 cm2 detection area readout with 64 Hamamatsu MPPCs (S10931-100P) with 3 x 3 mm2 active area each has been built and tested. The photo-sensors are arranged in a 8 x 8 array with a quadratic mirror light guide on top. The module is currently readout by in-house developed preamplifier boards but employing existing ASIC chips optimized for SiPM readout is also planned. Such a device is one of the candidates to be used for photon detection in the PANDA DIRC detectors.

Abstract:Gaseous PhotoMultipliers (GPM) are a very promising alternative of vacuum PMTs especially for large-size noble-liquid detectors in the field of Functional Nuclear Medical Imaging and Direct Dark Matter Detection. We present recent characterization results of a Hybrid-GPM made of three Micropattern Gaseous Structures; a Thick Gaseous Electron Multiplier (THGEM), a Parallel Ionization Multiplier (PIM) and a MICROMesh GAseous Structure (MICROMEGAS), operating in Ne/CF4 (90:10). Gain values close to 107 were recorded in this mixture, with 5.9keV x-rays at 1100mbar, both at room temperature and at that of liquid xenon (T=171K). The results are discussed in term of scintillation detection. While the present multiplier was investigated without photocathode, complementary results of photoextraction from CsI UV-photocathodes are presented in Ne/CH4 (95:5) and CH4 in cryogenic conditions.

Abstract:Based on recent test results, we present the performance of a compact fast Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector in separating electrons, muons, pions, and kaons at 0.7<p<3.0 GeV/c in view of a possible application at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) operating in the nucleus-nucleus collision mode. The apparatus under discussion uses a solid (or liquid) radiator, and a low-gain multiwire proportional chamber (MWOC) with a two dimensional pad readout as a photoelectron detector.

Abstract:Advances in the technologies associated with position sensitive gaseous detectors especially featuring CsI as reflective photoconverters will be reviewed. These photodetectors represent the most effective solution for what concerns cost and performance in the case of large area Cherenkov imaging applications in relatively low rate (or low occupancy) high energy physics and astrophysics experiments. Moreover, they are the only choice when the Cherenkov detector is embedded in a magnetic field. Recently proposed single photon MPGDs (Micropattern Gaseous Detectors) will be also discussed in view of the successful efforts so far made to extend their sensitivity to visible light. With some modifications, photosensitive gaseous detectors can also be used in the imaging of X-rays and particles.

First studies on cascaded dual-phase liquid hole-multipliers in xenon

Abstract:Challenges in scaling up noble-liquid time projection chambers prompted the exploration of new detection concepts. The liquid hole-multiplier (LHM) was introduced as a potential component, enabling the detection of ionization electrons and VUV photons. Prior studies focused on perforated electrodes coated with CsI immersed in the liquid and electroluminescence amplification produced on a bubble trapped underneath. However, the performance was hindered by electron transfer across the liquid-gas interface. Here, we explored a bubble-free variant, placing a CsI-coated Thick Gas Electron Multiplier electrode below the liquid-gas interface to improve the transfer efficiency across it. Results show >5-fold improvement in the S1'/S2 ratio (a proxy for the photon detection efficiency (PDE)) compared to the bubble-assisted LHM. Although the achieved PDE is still below expectation ($\sim$4%), we propose potential improvements to enhance the performance of this detector.

Abstract:Using a ring-strip resistive anode and a pair of integrated spectroscopy amplifiers, a circular radius-sensitive microchannel plate (MCP) detector is developed for future studies of ion-atom collisions. The detector is tested by a Fe-55 X-ray source and a radial resolution of 0.2 mm is achieved.

Abstract:We have previously reported on the construction and successful operation of the novel double phase Liquid Argon Large Electron Multiplier Time Projection Chamber (LAr LEM-TPC). This detector concept provides a 3D-tracking and calorimetric device capable of adjustable charge amplification, a promising readout technology for next-generation neutrino detectors and direct Dark Matter searches. In this paper, we report on the first operation of a LAr LEM-TPC prototype - with an active area of 10$\times$10 cm$^2$ and 21 cm drift length - equipped with a single 1 mm thick LEM amplifying stage and a two dimensional projective readout anode. Cosmic muon events were collected, fully reconstructed and used to characterize the performance of the chamber. The obtained signals provide images of very high quality and the energy loss distributions of minimum ionizing tracks give a direct estimate of the amplification. We find that a stable gain of 27 can be achieved with this detector configuration corresponding to a signal-over-noise ratio larger than 200 for minimum ionizing tracks. The decoupling of the amplification stage and the use of the 2D readout anode offer several advantages which are described in the text.

Abstract:Large Liquid Xenon Time Projection Chambers already heavily contributed to the search of non-baryonic Dark Matter in the form of WIMPs. However, with a sensitivity goal in the 10−48 cm−2 cross section range even more sensitive detectors are required in the near future with lower radioactive background, lower detection threshold, and a much larger target while keeping the costs within reasonable limits. We propose therefore to develop large area cryogenic Gaseous Photo Multiplier to replace the presently used Photo Multiplier Tubes to detect the VUV scintillation light of xenon. Replacing not only the PMT arrays, but also the PTFE reflectors will favor a single phase detector scheme with proportional scintillation in the liquid. Thus, it is expected that besides many technical advantages the sensitivity can be enhanced without increasing the xenon mass.

Abstract:Cerenkov technology is often the optimal choice for particle identification in high energy particle collision applications. Typically, the most challenging regime is at high pseudorapidity (forward) where particle identification must perform well at high high laboratory momenta. For the upcoming Electron Ion Collider (EIC), the physics goals require hadron ($\pi$, K, p) identification up to $\sim$~50 GeV/c. In this region Cerenkov Ring-Imaging is the most viable solution.\newline The speed of light in a radiator medium is inversely proportional to the refractive index. Hence, for PID reaching out to high momenta a small index of refraction is required. Unfortunately, the lowest indices of refraction also result in the lowest light yield ($\frac{dN_\gamma}{dx} \propto \sin^2{\left(\theta_C \right)}$) driving up the radiator length and thereby the overall detector cost. In this paper we report on a successful test of a compact RICH detector (1 meter radiator) capable of delivering in excess of 10 photoelectrons per ring with a low index radiator gas ($CF_4$). The detector concept is a natural extension of the PHENIX HBD detector achieved by adding focusing capability at low wavelength and adequate gain for high efficiency detection of single-electron induced avalanches. Our results indicate that this technology is indeed a viable choice in the forward direction of the EIC. The setup and results are described within.

Abstract:The solenoidal large intensity device (SoLID) at Jefferson Lab will push the boundaries of luminosity for a large-acceptance detector, which necessitates the use of a light-gas threshold Cherenkov counter for online event selection. Due to the high luminosity, the single-photon background rate in this counter can exceed 160 kHz/cm$^2$ at the photosensors. Therefore, it is essential to validate the high-rate limits of the planned photosensors and readout electronics in order to mitigate the risk of failure. We report on the design and an early set of studies carried out using a small telescopic Cherenkov device in a high-rate environment up to 60 kHz/cm$^2$, in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. Commercially available multi-anode photomultipliers (MaPMT) and low-cost large-area picosecond photodetectors (LAPPD) were tested using the JLab FADC250 modules for readout. The test beam results show that the MaPMT array and the internal stripline LAPPD can detect and identify single-electron and pair-production events in high-rate environments. Due to its higher quantum efficiency, the MaPMT array provided a better separation between the single-electron and the pair-production events compared to the internal stripline LAPPD. A GEANT4 simulation confirms the experimental performance of our telescopic device.

Abstract:The proposed new Electron-Ion Collider poses a technical and intellectual challenge for the detector design to accommodate the long-term diverse physics goals envisaged by the program. This requires a 4{\pi} detector system capable of reconstructing the energy and momentum of final state particles with high precision. The Electron-Ion Collider also requires identification of particles of different masses over a wide momentum range. A diverse spectrum of Particle Identification detectors has been proposed. Of the four types of detectors for hadron identification, three are based on Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter technologies, and one is realized by the Time of Flight method. The quest for a novel photocathode, sensitive in the far vacuum ultra violet wavelength range and more robust than cesium iodide, motivated an R&D programme to explore nano-diamond (ND) based photocathodes, started by a collaboration between INFN and CNR Bari and INFN Trieste. Systematic measurements of the photo emission in different Ar-CH4 and Ar-CO2 gas mixtures with various types of ND powders and Hydrogenated ND (H-ND) powders are reported. A first study of the response of THGEMs coated with different photocathode materials is presented. The progress of this R&D programme and the results obtained so far by these exploratory studies are described.

Abstract:Imaging Hybrid Photon Detectors (HPD) have been developed for integration in large area Cherenkov detectors for high energy physics and astrophysics. The presented designs - developed particularly for the experiments MAGIC, LHCb and AQUA-RICH - comprise very good imaging properties, protection against positive ion feedback and(or) minimum dead area. The underlying innovations are discussed in some detail.

Abstract:A Ring Imaging Čerenkov detector built for the BRAHMS experiment at the Brookhaven RHIC is described. This detector has a high index of refraction gas radiator. Čerenkov light is focused on a photo-multiplier based photon detector with a large spherical mirror. The combination of momentum and ring radius measurement provides particle identification from 2.5 GeV/c up to 35 GeV/c for pions and kaons and well above 40 GeV/c for protons during runs that had the radiator index of refraction set at $n-1=1700 \times 10^{-6}$.

Mighty Tracker -- Performance Studies of the MightyPix for LHCb

Abstract:A new downstream tracking system, known as the Mighty Tracker, is planned to be installed at LHCb during LS4 of the LHC. This will allow an increase in instantaneous luminosity from $2\cdot10^{33}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ to $1.5\cdot10^{34}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ and therefore an overall higher irradiation and up to six times higher occupancy. To keep the material budget as low or even lower as for the current detector, the Mighty Tracker is planned as a hybrid system with silicon pixels in the inner and scintillating fibers in the outer region. For the pixel detector part HV-CMOS MAPS with a pixel size of $55~\mathrm{x}~165~\mathrm{\mu m^2}$ will be used. This technology has been chosen because of its low production costs, low material budget, high radiation tolerance and good timing resolution. To fulfill the requirements, the development and characterization of the sensors focuses on radiation damage with fluences up to $2\cdot10^{15~}\mathrm{MeVn_{eq}}/\mathrm{cm^2}$ and a timing resolution $\leq3~\mathrm{ns}$. The timing resolution is restricted due to the $40~\mathrm{MHz}$ trigger-less DAQ by LHCb. To characterize and further develop the MightyPix a new readout system called MARS (Mighty TrAcker Readout System) has been developed. MARS is a modular system, able to test different single chips in the laboratory as well as at testbeam facilities. It has been used to perform first characterization studies of development-chips investigating radiation tolerance and timing resolution as well as the dependence of the sensor settings on the overall performance.
