Abstract:As more and more businesses are using knowledge intensive service systems (KISS) to deliver their services, software developers need to rise to the challenge to develop KISS that not only can deliver the service required by the businesses, but also can deliver the service with good quality. Quality of service (QoS) should be an ultimate goal for KISS. In this paper, we first provide an overview of a set of key QoS requirements for service-oriented software systems. We then describe how these QoS requirements are supported by software mechanisms. The overall aim of this paper is to introduce QoS requirements to the development of KISS.

Abstract:In this paper, we summarize and analyze main challenges towards system-on-package (SoP) integration with a broad perspective from system design to technology development. We see that the future SoP faces a main challenge of changed system architecture that will be different from today’s personal computer or PC-based systems. It is likely that communication-network based system architectures will be interesting to future SoP platforms. Second, we find that a major paradigm shift will occur in design methodology for SoP integration that emphasizes a coherent co-design of chip, package and system in a mixed signal environment and in combination with new issues such as virtual components integration. On the technology side, the major challenges will be power dissipation and system cooling, low-cost and thermal-matched high-density interconnect substrates, as well as low-cost passive components integration. Finally, we present some research examples that aim to cope with these new challenges on a strategic basis.

Abstract:Over the past decade, Service-Oriented System Engineering (SOSE) has emerged as one of the most important research areas to help industry achieve many goals such as agility, flexibility, reusability and efficiency. However, SOSE is still suffering from numerous and a broad scope of challenges. Although challenges usually imply research opportunities in academia, too many challenges will inevitably constrain the applicability of corresponding research topic to industry, and in turn spoil the vitality and development of the relevant research area. Therefore, it is necessary to find efficient approaches to facilitate decreasing current challenges and relieving the research effort in the area of SOSE. Through treating SOA system as an instance of organization, this paper justifies that we can introduce existing work in organization theory area to current challenges of SOSE. As a demonstration, four preliminary solutions that have been successfully applied to organizational area are identified to meet four challenges scattered under four research topics of SOSE.

Abstract:Software-intensive Systems-of-Systems (SoS) refer to an arrangement of managerially and operationally independent systems(i.e., constituent systems), which work collaboratively towards the achievement of global missions. Because some SoS are developed for critical domains, such as healthcare and transportation, there is an increasing need to attain higher quality levels, which often justifies additional costs that can be incurred by adopting formal and semi-formal approaches (i.e., languages and techniques) for modeling requirements. Various approaches have been employed, but a detailed landscape is still missing, and it is not well known whether they are appropriate for addressing the inherent characteristics of SoS. The main contribution of this article is to present this landscape by reporting on the state of the art in SoS requirements modeling. This landscape was built by means of a systematic mapping and shows formal and semi-formal approaches grouped from model-based to property-oriented ones. Most of them have been tested in safety-critical domains, where formal approaches such as finite state machines are aimed at critical system parts, while semi-formal approaches (e.g., UML and i*) address non-critical parts. Although formal and semi-formal modeling is an essential activity, the quality of SoS requirements does not rely solely on which formalism is used, but also on the availability of supporting tools/mechanisms that enable, for instance, requirements verification along the SoS lifecycle

Abstract:The Cyber-Physical System (CPS) is considered to be the next generation of intelligent industrial automation systems that integrate computing, communication and control technologies. In CPS, the interoperability requirements between devices and processes are growing rapidly. However, the diversity and heterogeneity of technologies and standards between information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) in industrial systems pose significant challenges. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) provides a software design pattern in which software components are connected only through messaging, which is consistent with the fundamentals of modularity and communication in distributed automation systems. SOA is considered to be a key technology for improving interoperability in next-generation industrial automation systems. This paper introduces the latest research advances in applying SOA paradigms to CPS to improve interoperability, including: Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA) and related extensions, implementing SOA at the manufacturing device level, integrating legacy systems in SOA-based automation systems, Plug-and-Play in SOA-based automation systems, dynamic configuration in SOA-based automation systems and the combination of SOA with Multi-Agent Systems and Evolvable Production Systems.
SoS contract verification using statistical model checking

Abstract:Exhaustive formal verification for systems of systems (SoS) is impractical and cannot be applied on a large scale. In this paper we propose to use statistical model checking for efficient verification of SoS. We address three relevant aspects for systems of systems: 1) the model of the SoS, which includes stochastic aspects; 2) the formalization of the SoS requirements in the form of contracts; 3) the tool-chain to support statistical model checking for SoS. We adapt the SMC technique for application to heterogeneous SoS. We extend the UPDM/SysML specification language to express the SoS requirements that the implemented strategies over the SoS must satisfy. The requirements are specified with a new contract language specifically designed for SoS, targeting a high-level English- pattern language, but relying on an accurate semantics given by the standard temporal logics. The contracts are verified against the UPDM/SysML specification using the Statistical Model Checker (SMC) PLASMA combined with the simulation engine DESYRE, which integrates heterogeneous behavioral models through the functional mock-up interface (FMI) standard. The tool-chain allows computing an estimation of the satisfiability of the contracts by the SoS. The results help the system architect to trade-off different solutions to guide the evolution of the SoS.

Abstract:Systems of systems (SoS) are a hot topic in our "fully connected global world". Our aim is not to provide another definition of what SoS are, but rather to focus on the adequacy of reusing standard system architecting techniques within this approach in order to improve performance, fault detection and safety issues in large-scale coupled systems that definitely qualify as SoS, whatever the definition is. A key issue will be to secure the availability of the services provided by the SoS despite the evolution of the various systems composing the SoS. We will also tackle contracting issues and responsibility transfers, as they should be addressed to ensure the expected behavior of the SoS whilst the various independently contracted systems evolve asynchronously.

Abstract:A key challenge in System of Systems (SoS) engineering is the analysis and maintenance of global properties under SoS evolution, and the integration of new constituent elements. There is a need to model the constituent systems composing a SoS in order to allow the analysis of emergent behaviours at the SoS boundary. The Contract pattern allows the engineer to specify constrained behaviours to which constituent systems are required to conform in order to be a part of the SoS. However, the Contract pattern faces some limitations in terms of its accessibility and suitability for verifying contract compatibility. To address these deficiencies, we propose the enrichment of the Contract pattern, which hitherto has been defined using SysML and the COMPASS Modelling Language (CML), by utilising SysML and Object Constraint Language (OCL). In addition, we examine the potential of interface automata, a notation for improving loose coupling between interfaces of constituent systems defined according to the contract, as a means of enabling the verification of contract compatibility. The approach is demonstrated using a case study in audio/video content streaming.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming an integral part of our modern lives as we converge towards a world surrounded by ubiquitous connectivity. The inherent complexity presented by the vast IoT ecosystem ends up in an insufficient understanding of individual system components and their interactions, leading to numerous security challenges. In order to create a secure IoT platform from the ground up, there is a need for a unifying operating system (OS) that can act as a cornerstone regulating the development of stable and secure solutions. In this paper, we present a classification of the security challenges stemming from the manifold aspects of IoT development. We also specify security requirements to direct the secure development of an unifying IoT OS to resolve many of those ensuing challenges. Survey of several modern IoT OSs confirm that while the developers of the OSs have taken many alternative approaches to implement security, we are far from engineering an adequately secure and unified architecture. More broadly, the study presented in this paper can help address the growing need for a secure and unified platform to base IoT development on and assure the safe, secure, and reliable operation of IoT in critical domains.

Abstract:In this paper we focus on the software architectures' description of System of Systems (SoS). In fact, SoS is a new class of complex software systems resulting from the massive development of wireless communication technologies and the integration of several independent systems working together. From another perspective, software architectures have been recognized as the cornerstone to the success of any software system. Considering the complexity of SoS, its development demands special attention to its software architectures. In this paper, we address the problem of how SoS' software architectures need to be described. For this purpose, we present an approach based on the standard 'ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010: Systems and software engineering- Architecture Description' to describe the software architectures of an SoS. We introduce this standard in a first step, then we illustrate it with study dealing with smart energy distributions entitled Smart City and we explain how we apply the standard rules on the case study to obtain the software architecture description of this SoS.
Heterogeneous multi-processor SoC: An emerging paradigm of embedded system design and its challenges

Abstract:The recent years have witnessed a variety of new embedded applications. Typical examples include mobile multimedia gadgets, digital televisions, high-end cell phones, wireless network applications, etc. The salient features of these applications include more comprehensive functionalities, higher performance demand, and low-power consumption. These requirements render the traditional single processor-based embedded systems no longer an appropriate realization for such applications. On the other hand, the continual advance of VLSI technologies enables more and more transistors to be integrated on a single chip. The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors predicts that chips with a billion transistors are within reach. As a result, the push (application demands) and pull (VLSI technology) forces together give birth to the multi-processor system-on-chips (MPSoCs). Heterogeneous MPSoCs are different from traditional embedded systems in many aspects and they ask for new design and implementation methodologies. Heterogeneous MPSoCs are not merely a hardware design. The complexity and heterogeneity of the system significantly increase the complexity of the HW/SW partitioning problem. Meanwhile, evaluating the performance and verifying its correctness is much more difficult compared to traditional single processor-based embedded systems. Constructing a simulator to simulate the system’s behavior and evaluate its performance takes more effort compared to conventional embedded systems. The verification of the system also becomes challenging. Programming a heterogeneous MPSoC is another challenge to be faced. This problem arises simply because there are multiple programmable processing elements and since they are heterogeneous, software designer needs to have expertise on all of these processing elements and needs to take a lot of care on how to make the software running as a whole. There are a lot more issues that do not appear or easier to tackle on traditional embedded systems, trade-offs between performance and low-power will dominate the design life time. However, the incoming challenges also brought us many opportunities either to industry and academic research.

Abstract:A distributed system's functionality must continuously evolve, especially when environmental context changes. Such required evolution imposes unbearable complexity on system development. An alternative is to make systems able to self-adapt by opportunistically composing at runtime to generate systems of systems (SoSs) that offer value-added functionality. The success of such an approach calls for abstracting the heterogeneity of systems and enabling the programmatic construction of SoSs with minimal developer intervention. We propose a general ontology-based approach to describe distributed systems, seeking to achieve abstraction and enable runtime reasoning between systems. We also propose an architecture for systems that utilizes such ontologies to enable systems to discover and 'understand' each other, and potentially compose, all at runtime. We detail features of the ontology and the architecture through three contrasting case studies: one on controlling multiple systems in smart home environment, another on the management of dynamic computing clusters, and a third on autonomic connection of rescue teams. We also quantitatively evaluate the scalability and validity of our approach through experiments and simulations. Our approach enables system developers to focus on high-level SoS composition without being constrained by deployment-specific implementation details. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach to raise the level of abstraction of SoS construction through reasoned composition at runtime. Our architecture presents a strong foundation for further work due to its generality and extensibility.

Abstract:Cyber-physical space systems are becoming increasingly important. Such systems have to satisfy requirements that are heavily affected by the physical space they operate in and by the active entities inhabiting the space, whose dynamic behaviors generate continuous topological changes. Reasoning about requirements in the early design phases is extremely challenging. High-level design can be facilitated by systematic application of separation of concerns throughout modeling, analysis, and early requirements validation. We outline an approach that identifies key recurrent concerns arising in cyber-physical space systems, supports systematic and semi-automatic modeling of separate concerns, and a formally defined composition of the separately developed models. Early requirements validation is then supported by leveraging statistical model checking techniques. We illustrate our approach through an example disaster scenario in a smart city.

Abstract:Services computing is an interdisciplinary subject that devotes to bridging the gap between business services and IT services. It is recognized that Requirements Engineering is fundamental in implementing the service oriented architecture. It takes traditional RE techniques great efforts to model business requirements and search for the appropriate services. In this paper, we propose an ontological approach to facilitate the service-oriented modeling framework. The general idea is to establishing a common semantic language to describe both the business requirements and services capabilities based on their effects on the environment. After that, we used a case study to illustrate this method and showed that substantial efforts can be spared to construct a service model from business requirements.

Abstract:As the economies of the world have become increasingly dependant on Information Technology (IT) services, there is a need for service designers and developers to focus on co-value creation between service providers and service consumers. Developers need to conduct a more rigorous and systematic identification, elicitation, and analysis of IT service requirements than ever before so that the resulting IT services are closely aligned with the enterprise business requirements. Research in Services Science from the business and management discipline has mostly focused on the delivery and management of services experience from the business perspective. Much of the research focus in Service Oriented Computing (SOC) so far has been on the design and delivery of services (especially Web Services), but engineering of IT service requirements has received much less attention. The overall aims of the proposed research is the design and development of an integrated framework and its supporting toolset for the systematic identification, elicitation, and analysis of IT service requirements that satisfy consumers’ needs and are closely aligned with their enterprise business goals.

Abstract:Managing Multi-Processor Systems-on-Chip (MPSoCs) is becoming increasingly complex as demands for advanced capabilities rise. This complexity is due to the involvement of more processing elements and resources, leading to a higher degree of heterogeneity throughout the system. Over time, management schemes have evolved from simple to autonomous systems with continuous control and monitoring of various parameters such as power distribution, thermal events, fault tolerance, and system security. Autonomous management integrates self-awareness into the system, making it aware of its environment, behavior, and objectives. Self-Aware Cyber-Physical Systems-on-Chip (SA-CPSoCs) have emerged as a concept to achieve highly autonomous management. Communication infrastructure is also vital to SoCs, and Software-Defined Networks-on-Chip (SDNoCs) can serve as a base structure for self-aware systems-on-chip. This paper presents a survey of the evolution of MPSoC management over the last two decades, categorizing research works according to their objectives and improvements. It also discusses the characteristics and properties of SA-CPSoCs and explains why SDNoCs are crucial for these systems.

Abstract:Availability of powerful computation and communication technology as well as advances in artificial intelligence enable a new generation of complex, AI-intense systems and applications. Such systems and applications promise exciting improvements on a societal level, yet they also bring with them new challenges for their development. In this paper we argue that significant challenges relate to defining and ensuring behaviour and quality attributes of such systems and applications. We specifically derive four challenge areas from relevant use cases of complex, AI-intense systems and applications related to industry, transportation, and home automation: understanding, determining, and specifying (i) contextual definitions and requirements, (ii) data attributes and requirements, (iii) performance definition and monitoring, and (iv) the impact of human factors on system acceptance and success. Solving these challenges will imply process support that integrates new requirements engineering methods into development approaches for complex, AI-intense systems and applications. We present these challenges in detail and propose a research roadmap.
