Abstract:Solid propellants are energetic materials used to launch and propel rockets and missiles. Although their history dates to the use of black powder more than two millennia ago, greater performance demands and the need for "insensitive munitions" that are resistant to accidental ignition have driven much research and development over the past half-century. The focus of this review is the material aspects of propellants, rather than their performance, with an emphasis on the polymers that serve as binders for oxidizer particles and as fuel for composite propellants. The prevalent modern binders are discussed along with a discussion of the limitations of state-of-the-art modeling of composite motors.

Abstract:The quest for new high‐energy materials (HEMs) with superior performance properties compared to conventional HEMs has opened up a new area of research and has resulted in the synthesis of many novel molecules. The challenge is to balance superior performance with stability while adopting an environmentally benign approach during synthesis, use, and disposal. This multipoint challenge has united theoretical, experimental, and applied researchers toward achieving this goal. Oxidizers are HEMs that possess stoichiometric excess of oxygen, which is used to oxidize the binder‐fuel and solid fuel additives in solid propellants. Ammonium perchlorate (AP), a commonly used oxidizer in solid propellants, needs replacement due to environmental and performance concerns. The demand for new "green energetic oxidizers" has led to the synthesis of dinitramide and trinitromethane salts, polynitroazoles, and strained‐ring compounds. Some of these compounds can be effectively used as energetic fillers to improve the overall performance of the solid propellants. This review assesses AP and ammonium nitrate in propellant applications and the performance challenges associated with the use of ammonium dinitramide (ADN), hydrazinium nitroformate, trinitroazetidine, and hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL‐20) in propellant formulations. The synthetic feasibility of these new oxidizers, their decomposition behaviour, performance, compatibility in propellant formulations, and ways to overcome these difficulties are discussed. Evaluation of the theoretical performance of these molecules indicated that the ADN − Glycidyl azide polymer is a promising combination. However, ADN is highly hygroscopic, and an anti‐hygroscopic strategy needs to be developed. Finally, this review examines the possible identification of practical oxidizers for application purposes.

Abstract:Hybrid rockets have many attractive properties but have not yet been used in any high performance applications, mainly due to the low regression rate of the solid fuels used. In this work, a number of crystalline organic fillers were assessed with the aim to increase the regression rate and density of HTPB‐based fuels. Hexamine, which was the most promising filler, catalyses the HTPB/isocyanate crosslinking reaction leading to unacceptable short pot life. However, it was found that the pot life could be substantially prolonged by the use of less reactive brands of HTPB, added plasticizer and reduced NCO/OH ratio. Fuel formulations containing 75 % hexamine were easy to cast and the cured slabs were of good quality, free from bubbles or voids, with a density 30 % higher than plain HTPB. The tensile strength of the fuels were similar to typical solid propellants but the elasticity might need to be improved. Hexamine decompose at substantially lower temperature than HTPB. This, and its high density, makes it promising for use in hybrid rocket fuels.

Abstract:Solid fuel ducted rockets operate with two-stage combustion. The first stage generates burnt products from the combustion of a fuel-rich solid propellant. In the second stage, those combustion products react with air and are ejected through a nozzle to produce thrust. The combustion efficiency of such a device strongly influences its performance and depends on the composition of the rich-fuel-burnt pyrolysis products. This study investigates the sensitivity of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen (CHON) solid fuels’ burnt product composition to the fuel properties, composition, and heat of formation. The calculations are performed assuming adiabatic, isobaric chemical equilibrium on synthetic species. Existing species’ properties constrain the properties of the synthetic species. The trends of formation of the main species observed in gas generators, i.e., [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], CO, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and solid carbon, are presented. The sensitivity of the molar concentration ratio [Formula: see text] of [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text] to the oxygen balance and propulsive properties is compared with an example of gas generator propellants. Recommendations for the possible optimization of fuel composition are formulated. For blends of the existing CHON species reported in the literature, it is shown that improving [Formula: see text] is only possible by degrading the specific impulse.

Abstract:While researchers have extensively studied the initial decomposition mechanism of Monomethylhydrazine (MMH, CH3NHNH2) in the MMH/dinitrogen tetroxide (NTO) system, the investigation of Unsymmetrical Dimethylhydrazine (UDMH, (CH3)2NNH2) has been limited due to its high toxicity, corrosiveness, and deterioration rate. Hence, the effects of UDMH's deterioration products on combustion performance and gas-phase combustion reaction mechanisms remain unclear. This comprehensive review examines the existing research on the reaction kinetics of the three widely used hydrazine-based self-ignition propellants: Hydrazine (HZ, N2H4): MMH: and UDMH, emphasizing the necessity for further investigation into the reaction kinetics and mechanisms of UDMH. It also discusses the implications of these findings for developing safer and more efficient rocket propulsion systems. Additionally, this review underscores the importance of utilizing computational chemistry theory to analyze hydrazine-based fuels' combustion and decomposition properties, constructing detailed pyrolysis and combustion reaction mechanisms to optimize rocket engine fuel performance and environmental concerns.

Abstract:The state of research on developing fuel options for next-generation chemical propulsion is reviewed for aviation fuels and energetic fuels. For aviation fuels, the development is based on considerations of cost, energy security, and climate change, with Fischer–Tropsch synthetic fuels and biofuels hold potential as alternative aviation fuels. The need for basic research to develop predictive capability for the oxidative chemistry of evolving fuels in evolving engine designs is emphasized, illustrated by the intricate reaction pathways and the enormity of the reaction mechanisms involved. Recent research activities toward achieving the goal of fuel design are discussed through the development of detailed mechanisms, reduced mechanisms, and surrogate fuels. For the development of highenergy-density propellants, advances in several classes of materials are discussed, including metallized and hypergolic propellants and propellants with strained and functionalized molecules, as well as nanoparticle addition. The impact of the recent progress in chemical synthesis, materials science, and nano science on these advances is noted.

Abstract:As a novel energetic material, aluminum hydride (AlH3) has attracted much attention because of its high hydrogen storage capacity and rapid dehydrogenation at low temperatures, which can be used as a promising energetic additive in solid propellants or in some other areas such as catalysts, fuel cell, and reducing agents. In particular, AlH3 as a component of solid propellant may largely promote the specific impulse of rocket engines and effectively reducing the erosion of engine nozzles. This review focuses on the research results in synthesis/regeneration, thermal decomposition, oxidation, ignition and combustion characteristics, and stabilization of AlH3 over the past decades. In particular, the stabilizing of AlH3 is essential for the its application in solid propellants, where the most widely used strategies have been introduced and compared, based on which some suggestions regarding possible future research directions are proposed.

Abstract:In a worldwide scenario which sees an increasing number of small satellite launches, novel mission concepts may be unlocked providing the spacecrafts with the very precise and rapid maneuvering capability that electric thrusters cannot guarantee. In this context, chemical thrusters appear to be a possible solution. This work aimed to experimentally study and solve the problem of ignition for 10 N hybrid rockets based on hydrogen peroxide. Firstly, the study analyzed the performance of a monopropellant engine capable of functioning as a hybrid injection system. In particular, the effects of the liquid mass injected, the initial temperature, and the supply pressure on the pulsed engine performance were experimentally investigated. The injected mass showed a greater impact on the performance with respect to the starting chamber temperature and injection pressure. This thruster also showed a good potential for space applications. In the second part of the work, the objective was to find an ignition procedure that reduced propellant consumption and eliminated the need for a glow plug. This is important because the electrical power consumption in real applications significantly affects other subsystems and is undesirable for chemical engines. Different ignition procedures were tested to emphasize their respective advantages and disadvantages, and the findings indicated that the concept of pulsed preheating is feasible with only a small amount of propellant consumption, while substantially decreasing the ignition duration from approximately 45 min to a maximum of just 3 min. Finally, similar ignition procedures were adopted using different fuels. The results showed that PVC and ABS, under the same operating conditions, ignite more easily than HDPE, which requires an oxidizer consumption approximately double that of the other two fuels. Considerations about the effect of chamber pressure and oxidizer mass flow rate on engine ignition were also included.

Abstract:During the past few decades, a variety of novel hydrogen-enriched boron nitrogenhydrogen (BNH) materials have been developed as prospective hydrogen storage candidates. Owing to their unique composition and properties, it has recently been realized and suggested that BNH materials may be potential solid propellants and additives applied in solid and hybrid rockets. Amine metal borohydride is a novel BNH hydrogen storage system with promising properties. To investigge its potential as a solid propellant; the combustion properties of two newly developed ethylene diamine aluminum borohydrides (Al(BH4)(3)-nEDA, n = 3, 2) were studied. These materials were revealed to have high combustion heat of 32.20 and 36.90 MJ/kg for Al(BH4)(3)center dot 3EDA and Al(BH4)(3)center dot 2EDA, respectively. Their ignition delay time is similar to 2.0 ms. Meanwhile, their combustion products mainly compose of CO2 and H2O without NO2, which exhibit less-toxic performance as propellants arid additives for rockets. Furthermore, according, to a combination of measurements, including thermogravimetry/mass spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, a combustion mechanism was studied and proposed. It is suggested that the combustion of Al(BH4)(3)center dot nEDA (n = 3, 2) may undergo three sequential stages of dehydrogenation, combustion of hydrogen and impurities, and combustion of the dehydrogenated framework.

Abstract:Current solid rocket propellant formulations still employ traditional ingredients utilized since the 1960s, such as hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB). Recent advances in energetic polymer see many binders capable of providing higher specific impulse and burn rates over HTPB. As shown by calculations, even slight increases in specific impulse can drastically increase the maximum payload of a launch system. Therefore, replacing HTPB with energetic binders could provide heavy space missions the needed extra boost. Energetic binders could also be paired with chlorine-free energetic oxidizers to synergistically provide a specific impulse exceedingly higher than the current formulation while reducing pollution. A comprehensive evaluation of the synthesis, mechanical properties, and performance of various trending and overlooked energetic polymers is described. Several outstanding candidates show promising properties to replace HTPB.

Abstract:The energy potential of hypothetical zwitterionic nitrohydrazine H 3 N N NO 2 as a component of solid composite propellants is estimated. Two-component formulations with a hydrocarbon or an active binder and three-component formulations with aluminum or aluminum hydride additives are considered. The highest calculated ballistic efficiency was obtained for formulations with an active binder and aluminum hydride. Their specific impulse exceeds 280 s, and with allowance for two-phase losses, the maximum effective impulse of the third stage rocket motor reaches 265.4 s, whereas for the optimized similar formulation based on ammonium dinitramide, this value is much lower (262.5 s).

Abstract:Boron, a metalloid, produces high energy upon combustion. It is recommended as an ingredient for fuel or propellant in rocket propulsion, despite the challenge of extracting its full thermal energy. So far no one has claimed the complete energy conversion of boron upon combustion. On the other hand, the current propulsion system of the Meteor missile uses boron-loaded propellant. The boron-loaded propellant provides an approximately three-fold increase in specific impulse compared to conventional propellants. The present study focuses on boron-HTPB-based solid fuels impregnated with early ignited particles as additives, aiming to assess the combustion performance of boron particles. These additives are magnesium (Mg), titanium (Ti), and activated charcoal (C), and their effects are evaluated based on the residual active boron content in the condensed combustion products (burned residues). An economical tool commonly called stagnation flow or opposed flow burner (OFB) is used to deflagrate the fuel sample by means of pressurized oxygen gas. The condensed combustion products are examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Among the fuel combinations investigated here, magnesium has been found to be a good burning enhancer of boron, leaving the lowest active boron content (30%) in the burned-out residue. The current research aims to develop an efficient boron-containing solid fuel for hybrid propellant ducted rocket engine applications.

Abstract:Hybrid rocket propulsion, first demonstrated by the Russian GIRD-09 rocket in 1933, combines liquid oxidizer and solid fuel for thrust generation. Despite numerous advantages, such as enhanced safety, controllability, and potential environmental benefits, hybrid propulsion has yet to achieve its full potential in space applications. In recent years, the research on hybrid propulsion has gained enormous momentum in both academia and industry. Recent accomplishments such as the altitude record for student rockets (64 km), the launch of the first electric pump-fed hybrid rocket, and a successful 25 s hovering test highlight the potential of hybrid rockets. However, although the hybrid community is growing constantly, industrial utilizations and in-space validations do not yet exist. In this work, we reassess the possibilities of hybrid rocket engines by presenting potential fields of applications from the literature. Most importantly, we identify the technical challenges that hinder the breakthrough of hybrid propulsion in the space sector and evaluate the technologies and approaches necessary to bridge the gaps in hybrid rocket development.

Abstract:A gas generating propellants are used as initiators of liquid rocket propellants turbopumps and have as desired characteristic a high-volume production of low-temperature gas. In this context, some formulations of composite propellant containing polyurethane (based on liquid hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene), guanidine nitrate, ammonium perchlorate, and additives were evaluated and characterized in order to verify their potential as gas generator propellant, as well as to evaluate the influence of additives on mechanical properties. The formulations were prepared, analyzed, and tested for mechanical properties.

Abstract:Solid Rockets are one of the most efficient and reliable rockets, but production of chlorine gases in the exhausts of these rockets is a major drawback. The toxic exhaust is due to the presence of ammonium perchlorate (AP) as the oxidizer. Thus, the solution to decrease this exhaust is the use of green oxidizers such as ammonium nitrate (AN), but it suffers from the drawback of low energetics and hygroscopicity, phase transitions at room temperatures, and incomplete combustion in pure form. The present work emphasizes the phase stabilization of AN in the presence of AP and cobalt nitrate hexahydrate (CNH) catalyst. FTIR study helps to identify present functional groups in the propellant samples. The thermal decomposition of AN/AP-based propellant samples was investigated with an STA Instrument under a nitrogen atmosphere with different heating rates. The kinetic studies reveal the steps of reactions and activation energy of propellant samples which were observed to change with the addition of AN and CNH. The overall studies confirm that AP and catalyst CNH help in the phase stabilization of AN in propellant samples and enhance the combustion reactions at lower temperatures. The burn rate and flame temperature of the AN-AP propellant sample are found to increase with the addition of a catalyst. The catalyst positively effects the energy barrier or activation energy, burn rate, and flame temperature of AN-AP propellant, thus confirming that the catalyst helps in the combustion process.

Study of a hybrid gas generator for a ducted rocket

Abstract:A performance analysis and experimental study of a hybrid gas generator to be used in a ducted rocket are presented. Such a system exhibits potential advantages with regard to safety, performance, costs, availability of the fuel components, storability, and thrust control. A combination of a paraffin wax fuel and oxygen in the gas generator ensures a high regression rate and reveals oxidizer-to-fuel ratios as low as 0.14 in the gas generator (compared to the stoichiometric ratio of 3.4). A fuel regression rate correlation versus the oxidizer mass flux is derived, presenting a major advantage for the fuel flow rate management in comparison to control of the solid propellant gas generator burning rate through the pressure exponent, which requires mechanical interference with the hot nozzle flow to ensure a change in the combustor pressure and a corresponding change in the burning rate. Evaluation of the ducted rocket (with different oxidizers) versus pure ramjet performance shows a higher specific thrust for the former, though the latter exhibits a higher specific impulse.

Abstract:The race and competition in aerospace technologies based on environmentally friendly green propulsion systems with green fuels and oxidizers are attracting a significant attention. Development of hybrid propulsion systems that use a hypergolic fuel and green H2O2 oxidizer, capable of deep throttling and restarting from “cold”, is a very challenging task. Here, we describe a new synthetic approach for the synthesis and characterization of conceptually new hydride- and boron-free, and air/moisture stable solid H2O2-hypergols, based on Cu and Co complexes of bis(5-tetrazolyl) amine (H2BTA) ligand. Among prepared and evaluated materials, the best performing compound [K2(H2O)2Cu(BTA)2]n (JD-4) was found to exhibit short ignition delay time of 7 ms (with H2O2, 97%), and high thermostability of 343 °C. Based on obtained ignition results, X-ray crystallography and HASEM software calculations, structure-hypergolic activity-relationship studies were conducted. We found that the electron density difference between Cu and BTA units should be in a specific range (~2) for these compounds to ignite, providing a valuable tool for further development of novel, green, solid fuels for propulsion systems.
