Abstract:Given its history and status as a purveyor of quality children's entertainment, Disney's animated films are often associated with notions of "wholesomeness" and "family fun" by audiences. Consequently, consumption of Disney's media products tend to be an uncritical process. While a preferred decoding of Zootopia recognizes in its characters and story an affirmation of racial diversity and girl power, the film's polysemy conveys other latent messages that emerge through a negotiated reading. This paper focuses on the discourses within Zootopia that promote neoliberal values such as consumerism, individualism, and "small government." An analysis of the text reveals that Zootopia constructs an ideal citizen who obeys the law, performs their consumptive duties, believes in the capitalist myth of the American Dream, and happily accepts simulacra as substitute for reality. Furthermore, this paper makes the argument that Zootopia functions as a feature-length advertisement, not only for consumer products per se, but in a broader sense, for the consumerist lifestyle.

Abstract:Movies permeate every aspect of people's life. Movies are typically viewed as a kind of entertainment or an escape from reality. However, certain films include hidden messages. This study examines the animal symbolism in the movie Zootopia. The film exemplifies how the animal characters are symbolically utilized throughout the film and how it reflects on contemporary situations. Animal qualities described in the movie Zootopia indicate a cultural custom already accepted by civilization. After comparing how the animals in the movie are portrayed to how they are depicted in real life through the culture used by the movie, the authors see that the animals in the movies are portrayed similarly to how they are portrayed in the culture of the United States. Abstract:Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pesan dalam film animasi Zootopia. Film sebagai produk dari media massa, mengandung pesan yang ingin disampaikan oleh pembuatnya. Namun tidak sedikit penikmat film yang tenggelam dengan cerita dan visual yang disajikan, sehingga mengabaikan pesan yang sarat akan makna di dalamnya. Untuk itu penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menganalisis pesan yang terkandung di dalam film ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, dengan pendekatan analisis semiotika. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film ini mengandung pesan sindiran terhadap birokrasi pemerintahan.

Abstract:This study aims to find out the meaning of the animal characters in the Zootopia movie. Zootopia is an animated movie that uses animals as characters; thus, it is challenging to analyze those animals since they brought different signs from common ones. Therefore, this research focuses on three animal characters e.g., mouse, rabbit, and fox which are considered as important signs in Zootopia that thus need to be interpreted. In interpreting the signs, this study employs Saussure's semiotic theory which relates to a sign that contains a signifier and its use or interpretation as signified. This research used qualitative methods. It is found that the stereotypes of the three animal characters in the movie are different from the common acceptance. The movie tries to break stereotypes about mouse, rabbit and fox. Finally, it is hoped that this study may create more awareness to see anything not based on its prevailing labels.

Abstract:This study focuses on the role of comic functions in exposing and challenging hidden ideologies, intentions, potential significance and other phenomena behind the animated ecological discourse of the film "Zootopia". The paper consistently considers two views on the ecology of animated discourse and comic functions that are used to uncover violation and establish an eco-friendly relation by means of language forms. The material of the English-language animated discourse of the film "Zootopia" examines cooperation of verbal and nonverbal modes, exposes problems and encourages solving them as well as promotes establishment of sustainable relationships between humans themselves, humans and nature as well as its phenomena.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the use of speech act and its possible purpose performed by two main characters, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde in the Zootopia movie. Qualitative method was utilized to explain the function of speech act performed by the characters. Searle’s theory is used as the main theory to answer the two problems formulation regarding speech act classifications and their purposes of using speech act. The research result showed that all of the speech acts was used by Hopps. On the other hand, Wilde used just half of the speech act classification, namely directive, expressive, and commissive. Meanwhile, her purposes of using speech acts are to tell what she believed (assertives), to ask someone to do (directives), to express the feeling (expressive), to promise (commissives), and to bring a change (declarations).

Abstract:This thesis attempts to analyze in the movie Zootopia directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore. The study is based on two research questions, first about kind of moral values and second about the effects of moral values through the main character. The methodology of the study is descriptive qualitative. It means that it does not need statistic approach to explore the material. The primary data is taken from the original movie itself and script from Zootopia movie. The secondary data is taken from many journals, literary books and some relevant materials to support and complete the primary data sources. The result shows that there are ten types of kind of moral values which the writers found by in the script of the movie Zootopia. They are brave, respect, kind and friendly, confidence, loyalty, self-discipline, fair and human, love and affection, honesty and sensitive and not selfish. Then, the effects of moral values that reflected through the main character are optimistic, brave, ambitious, caring, and enthusiastic. The writers hope that movie lovers can see the positive aspect and take it to imply their life

Abstract:This research explores the role of animated films as a medium for addressing social issues, particularly discrimination, with a focus on the film “Elemental” (2023). Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes discriminatory actions and their impacts on the three main characters: Barnie, Cinder, and Ember. Drawing on Dovidio and Esses’ (2010) theory of discrimination and Ayón's (2015) concept of effects, the research highlights parts of the film depicting discrimination and its physical and non-physical consequences. The result of the current study shows that different types of discrimination were portrayed in the movie through explicit and implicit actions as well as institutional and cultural biases. These findings indicate that animated films can effectively convey information about discrimination to various audiences, especially children, in a creative and easily understandable manner. This reaffirms that animated films serve not only as tools for ideological communication but also as agents of social change. The study also dissects the negative impacts of discrimination on the mental health and family functions experienced by the main characters. Through the analysis of discriminatory actions presented in dialogue, settings, and actions in the film, the research provides a profound understanding of the main characters' experiences in facing discrimination. In conclusion, this research reinforces the importance of using animated films as a tool for voicing social issues.

Abstract:<span><i>The Dasgupta Review</i> is the latest attempt at justifying financialisation of Nature, but also much more. It represents a high point in applying concepts of capital and wealth accumulation comprehensively to all aspects of human and non-human existence. Unravelling the flaws in the arguments, contradictions and underlying motives requires both understand of and cutting through the specialist language, neoclassical economic models, mathematics and rhetoric. We offer a critical guide to and deconstruction of Dasgupta's biodiversity economics and reveal its real aim. Framing critical biodiversity loss as an issue of asset management and population size is a blind to avoid questioning economic growth, which remains unchallenged and depoliticized despite apparently recognizing natural limits. Dasgupta ignores long-standing problems with capital theory and social cost–benefit analysis. Rather than a scientific review of biodiversity economics he offers impossible to achieve valuation, based on old flawed theories and methods, embedded in an unsavoury political economy.</span>

Abstract:Stereotypes exist in public life, and by analyzing the ways in which stereotypes are presented in movies and measures to reduce them in real life can have a sustained positive impact. This article takes the movie "Zootopia" as the research object, and uses literature research and case study methods to analyze the ways in which stereotypes are presented in movies, as well as the negative effects and related countermeasures against stereotypes. Through research results, it was found that the types of stereotypes in the movie "Zootopia" include gender stereotypes, occupational stereotypes, and racial Stereotypes. The negative effects of stereotypes include hindering the ideological development of young people, influence the direction of social public opinion and causes professional bias and makes it easy to generalize. The public can mitigate negative impacts through two channels: one is through movies such as using public figures and set contrasting personality, and the other is through real life such as using the Internet for Publicity and promote gender education.

Abstract:The startling success of Disney animation prompts the perspective for this essay, which explores both a political-economic and cultural studies approach. Understanding Disney animation helps clarify the intimate relationship between ideology and socio-economic practice, (Ricker, 1996; Wasko, 2001). Investigating the construction, content, and persuasive efficacy of animated Disney films reveals that Disney consistently and intentionally selects themes in its commodities-as-animated features that promote an ideology useful to Disney and capitalist society, but at odds with democratic, creative communities. Of course, valid arguments may be made that audiences construct their own varied meanings, often in contradiction to those intended by the producer, but this essay is concerned primarily with the content of the messages constructed and distributed from the entertainment producer, because of Disney's standing in popular culture. Moreover, because social groups use “mass-mediated ‘words and images’ to create and sustain social relations” (Ricker, 1996, p. 42), in a society ostensibly committed to democracy, it is particularly unsettling to find that Disney's animated features simultaneously soften and distribute messages of class hierarchy and anti-social hyper-individualism.

Abstract:Bir kitle iletişim aracı olarak sinema, kitlelere ideolojik aktarımlar yapma konusunda oldukça kullanışlı bir araçtır. Tarihsel süreç içerisinde bir eğlence unsuru olmasının yanında kitleleri manipüle etmek için de kullanılan sinema ve özelde animasyon sineması, ideolojilerin somutlanması açısından önem arz etmektedir. Teknolojinin gelişmesiyle birlikte animasyon sineması yönetmenlere imajları işleme konusunda daha özgür bir mecra ve imkan sunmaktadır. Bu bağlamda ideolojik birtakım kodların ve temsillerin filmsel anlatılara aktarılması da daha kolay hale gelmeye başlamıştır. Animasyon sinemasının egemen ideolojinin yayılmasında ve normalleşmesinde etkin bir rol oynadığı fikri özellikle son yapılan çalışmalarda genel kabul gören bir yaklaşım olarak karşımıza çıkar. Bu bağlamda bu çalışma ideolojinin imajlara olan yansımasını, örtük imajlardaki söylemleri ve egemen fikrin izler kitleye olan yansımasını animasyon sineması çerçevesinde incelemeyi kendisine amaç edinmektedir. Bu amaçlar doğrultusunda egemene içkin birtakım ideolojik tasarımlar ve söylemler, araştırma nesnesi konumunda yer alan Zootopia (2016) filmi üzerinden incelenmekte, ideolojik film çözümleme yöntemiyle ortaya konulmaya çalışılmaktadır. Yapılan çözümleme sonucunda filmsel metinde idealize edilen özne konumundaki kahramanın, karakterlerin ve inşa edilen iletişim mekanlarının, neoliberal ve kapitalist ideoloji temelli bir yaklaşımla örtük bir dil kullanılarak egemen yapıya, toplumsal normlara ve politik tutumlara uygun bir şekilde tasarlandığı bulgulanmıştır.

Abstract:It has become common practice to criticize Disney princess franchises and contrast the leading female characters with the more mature, highly socially conscious female characters in the present. However, these criticisms may forget to take other factors into consideration, such as social development. The progress of society will lead to changes in people's thinking and cognitive renewal. Today's popular views might not be viewed the same as in the past. So it would be harsh to rely on today's connotations to conclude that popular Disney princesses are failed child models. Through a literature review, this study analyzes the characters in Disney movies under the social background conditions of different film-making periods, using Disney princesses as the research center, and draws a conclusion on the relationship between the characters and the historical social background.

A Study on Reading Strategies for English Reading Class Using Movies: Focusing on the Movie Zootopia

Abstract:This study aims to introduce reading strategies in which learners can directly participate and present class activities, using them to consider the activation of reading strategies. In addition, the study analyzes learners’ attitudes and reactions to using specific reading strategies to determine the points to be considered when using these strategies. The Disney animation, Zootopia (Howard & Moore, 2016), was used as a case study, and reading strategies focusing on the topics of prejudice, discrimination, and diversity were used. The research evaluation was based on an openended survey conducted in the last week of class and self-reflection notes drafted at the end of each week’s class. According to the survey, most learners were satisfied with the use of various reading strategies in reading classes using movies (70.3%). This satisfaction was mainly based on opinions that reading strategies helped learners to participate in class activities, understand movie topics, and efficiently focus on classes. Furthermore, it was found that when using movies in English reading classes, reading strategies centered on the movie themes may prove to be a sound approach. Therefore, it is necessary to further activate a theme-tailored reading strategy that uses various films with diverse and interesting themes.

Abstract:This study aims to deeply analyze the successful strategies of Disney movies in social media marketing, taking “Zootopia” and “Frozen 2” as case studies. With the expansion of the global movie market and the diversification of audience demand, animated movies are highly competitive, and Disney occupies a leading position with its strong strength and perfect network. The study first introduces the background of The Walt Disney Company, explaining the study's purpose and significance and the framework. Then it analyzes the global influence and marketing strategy of “Zootopia” respectively, including its background, the current fire situation, social media promotion techniques innovative parts, and offline promotion strategy. Then the background, audience reaction, social media promotion methods, and effects of Frozen 2 are discussed. It then compares the differences and changes in the marketing strategies of the two films, including social media strategies, offline promotion focus, cross-border cooperation methods, etc. It also discusses the evolution of marketing strategies, such as digital transformation, emphasizing user-generated content, exploring the application of new technologies, etc., as well as cross-cultural communication strategies. Finally, suggestions and expectations for movie marketing in the digital era are given, including strengthening innovation, building a social interaction ecology, pursuing content quality, and deepening cross-cultural communication strategies. The study summarizes the results, points out the limitations, and offers an outlook on future research directions, providing valuable experience and inspiration for the film industry.
