This paper explores the evolving landscape of TikTok, focusing on its technological advancements, emerging forms of expression, and distinctive features in reshaping visual communication. It delves into the platform’s unique capabilities for audiovisual messages, highlighting its transformative impact on digital culture. Through its unique blend of short-form videos, innovative build-in editing tools, and algorithmic recommendation system, TikTok has democratized content creation and consumption, enabling users worldwide to engage in creative expression and community-building. The aim of this paper is to qualitatively and exploratively delve into the structures of TikTok messages and the forms of visual communication that appear on it. The author employed deep observation and multimodal analysis for this purpose.

Abstract:TikTok is a widely used social media platform that enables users to create and share short videos with music, using various filters and creative features. It has a large and diverse user base, especially among young people, who are particularly vulnerable to influences on body image. This study aims to review the existing literature on how TikTok influences users’ perceptions of their own bodies and those of others. A narrative review was conducted using various databases. The selection and screening of studies were based on predefined criteria, focusing on those that investigated the relationship between TikTok usage and body image perceptions. The review revealed a mixed impact of TikTok usage on body image perceptions. Several studies indicated that exposure to body-related content on TikTok could lead to negative body image and dissatisfaction among users. However, some studies suggested that TikTok could also be a platform for promoting body positivity and acceptance. The findings underscore the need for further research to understand the nuanced effects of TikTok on body image perceptions. Abstract:With the accelerated pace of people's lives and the use of short videos in fragmented time, the development of short videos is accelerated and TikTok stands out among many video platforms. From the perspective of visual culture communication, this essay analyzes the reasons for the popularity of TikTok short videos from three aspects: the relationship between short videos and visual culture, the communication characteristics of TikTok, and the communication effect of TikTok short videos. It also summarizes the current problems and challenges of TikTok to provide reference to short video development by using an analysis model called SWOT, namely strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Based on the background of visual culture communication, this essay first conducts an extensive search and collation of related theories and then conducts research on the communication effects and characteristics of TikTok short videos. This essay concludes that TikTok is characterized by its swiping browsing style, diversification of dissemination channels, and development of originality and innovation. Furthermore, the improvement of TikTok's short video communication effect is mainly attributed to its content and form. Based on this, this essay gives targeted strategies and suggestions, including internal optimization of TikTok short videos, diversification of communication channels, and enhancement of video auditing.

Abstract:According to Alexa’s ranking of the top 500 sites on the web, YouTube takes the second place, demonstrating the importance of online services focused on sharing of short self-shot videos. With growing popularity of mobile phones, mobile only short video sharing social media applications appeared on the market. One of such applications is TikTok, probably the most talked-of video sharing platform of 2019, similar to its twin service for the Chinese market, called Douyin. The content on YouTube varies greatly in topic: from music and toys to science and technologies, from computer games and cooking to education and politics. But does the content on mobile short video platforms differ that much too? The content of 1,000 videos on TikTok as a prominent representative of mobile short video sharing social media services was analyzed to find out which content is common and popular on TikTok. Content analysis was applied as the main research technique. Comedy videos and musical performances turned out to be the most popular and the most frequent categories among both male and female performers. Comedy videos are, however, especially frequent among male creators. At that, videos related to beauty and DIY are common for females, but not for males. Additional attention in this study was paid to the potential law infringements on the platform. The cases of potential violations of copyright and personal rights were observed. Videos containing inappropriate contents such as violence, sexual activity, or consumption of drugs and alcohol were, by contrast, not revealed.

Abstract:In the global efforts to fight the pandemic, social distancing guidelines were enforced. Ways to virtually interact and communicate with each other had to be found in order to fulfill social needs. One of these ways were social media platforms as for example TikTok, which download rate increased significantly in the last year. This chapter investigates the rise of TikTok during the global pandemic by reviewing the existing literature from research and practice. As a result, I identified key success factors that supported the rise of TikTok as well as diversification possibilities for the post-pandemic evolution of TikTok. Therefore, the chapter explores the digital transformation of an ecosystem, deriving conceptual knowledge.

Abstract:The popularity of TikTok has sparked short video studies in global academia. Whereas in China, the market for short video platforms is already matured, which has seen numerous research publications. However, an overall review of short video research is still absent. Using the methods of science mapping and thematic analysis, we summarized the research and review articles from Web of Science Core Collection and CNKI (CSSCI and CSCD) from the past two decades. The main findings are: 1) There are four main stages in the development of short video studies and each of them is tightly related to the market growth; 2) Four main perspectives (media, economic, cultural and discursive) of short video studies with 12 clusters of core issues have emerged, and the visibility that short videos bring to ordinary people is the fundamental viewpoint of many studies; 3) Currently, the short video studies are going broader and deeper, attracting scholars from different academic backgrounds, and multiple methods are applied in the studies; 4) The papers from WoS and CNKI share some similarities but show more differences in the research issues, subjects and methods. We pointed out the limitations of present studies and possibilities of future research.

Abstract:Purpose This research article presents an exploratory case study of the sociotechnical landscape of BookTok, and how young people use it to connect with others around the books they love, or those they love to hate. By observing the interplay between young people, books, and the technology (TikTok) that connects them, this study aims to explore how blending analog and digital media tools makes reading social and fun. Design/methodology/approach The authors selected three bestsellers available in English and Danish, and BookTokers who made related videos. This study used a qualitative, ethnographic (Pink, 2021) approach to explore interactions on the app. Inductive coding (Saldaña, 2021) helped the authors identify themes, and connect to areas of inquiry. Findings During the pandemic, TikTok and BookTok offered young people opportunities for reading engagement in social, bookish communities by using technology to promote reading in print. In doing so, their actions made reading and being a reader highly entertaining. Research limitations/implications As an exploratory case study, this research is not generalizable. But the findings will apply to future work on reading, publishing, and connected learning in a sociotechnical landscape. Practical implications BookTok connects print and digital formats, offering innovative possibilities for young people's connected learning and reading promotion in schools and libraries. Originality/value Because TikTok is a relatively new tool, and its sub-community BookTok became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic, research on this topic is still in its earliest stages.
Why’s Everyone on TikTok Now? The Algorithmized Self and the Future of Self-Making on Social Media

Abstract:The video-sharing social media platform TikTok has experienced a rapid rise in use since its release in 2016. While its popularity is undeniable, at the first glance, it seems to offer features already available on previously existing and well-established platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. To understand processes of self-making on TikTok, we undertake two methods of data collection: a walkthrough of the app and its surrounding environment, and 14 semistructured participant interviews. A qualitative analysis of this data finds three distinct themes emerge: (1) awareness of the algorithm, (2) content without context, and (3) self-creation across platforms. These results show that TikTok departs from existing platforms in the model of self-making it engenders, which we term “the algorithmized self”—a complication of the pre-existing “networked self” framework.

Abstract:With 3.8 billion users, social media created ethical problems as well. The Cambridge Analytica scandal has been a serious issue with data security lately. Contents not in compliance with general moral rules is another important violation of ethics. TikTok application, the fastest-rising short video-sharing website, is examined. As a result of the literature review, it is observed that TikTok application also had ethical violations issues like lack of private data safety, not sufficient precautionary system barriers for the young generation, and addiction risk. Furthermore, considering that the young people can interact with malicious users through the fake accounts and the risk of sharing their exceptional videos to have more viewers, it is suggested that the sanctions should be arranged as a deterrent in violation of the rules. Parents and young users must be educated about the risks and ethical violations of social media.

Abstract:Media, Culture &Society, Ahead of Print. Instead of viewing TikTok as a platform, in this article we borrow Dutch film theorist Patricia Pisters's concept of neuro-images to approach TikTok as a cultural form that is deeply participatory, platform contingent, and algorithmically engraved. In the co-production between algorithms and users, TikTok becomes an enormous database and generates personalised narratives about individuals and the world onto and through its 'brain-screen' interfaces, which simulate our conscious and unconscious mind, and actualise the idea of creativity based on repetition. TikTok thus enables a quasi-automated cinema, whose non-stopping filming of everyday lives does not seek to reduce desires and tastes into a singular and coherent structure, but instead uncovers, releases and contains them in its vast database and interfaces, leading to a fluid and modulating categorisation of identities. It is within this quasi-automated, deeply participatory digital cinema that TikTok constitutes neuro-images, producing a distinctive experience of time, and unpredictable and unstable futures.

Abstract:Livestreaming shopping and short videos seem completely different features for most people; however, ByteDance perfectly combined these two features into one software named TikTok or Douyin. TikTok benefitted from the Covid-19 pandemic and rapid develop in 154 countries. The paper uses a SWOT analysis to analyze the business strategy of BytaDance in China and all over the world. The authors created a SWOT analysis combines weaknesses, opportunities, strengths, and threats associated with the application of livestreaming shopping and short videos. TikTok already obtained substantive revenue for BytaDance, and livestreaming will become one of the important shopping methods in the future.

Abstract:Media, Culture &Society, Ahead of Print. In this paper I discuss the affordances and popularity of the short-video app TikTok from an audience studies point of view. I do so by drawing on findings from ethnographic fieldwork with young adult TikTok users based in the United Kingdom that was conducted in 2020 and 2021. I trace how using the app, specifically scrolling through the TikTok For You Page, the app's algorithmic content feed, became a fixed part of the everyday routines of young adults. I show how TikTok appealed to them as a convenient means of escape and relief that they were unable to find elsewhere during and beyond times of lockdown. Further, I highlight the complex nature of TikTok as an app and the active role that users play in imagining and appropriating the app's affordances as meaningful parts of their everyday social life. Closing the paper, I reflect on future directions of TikTok scholarship by stressing the importance of situated audience studies.

Abstract:TikTok has become one of the fastest growing online empires in the last decade, and one of the most influential social media tools today. By centering the short-video format tailored for smartphone screens, this platform sets forth the sonic component of the audio-visual material in ways which have been unexplored in the social media realm on a global scale before. In this article I will explore the ways in which TikTok has made an “aural turn”, and thus changed and influenced the processes of music-making, music listening and music promotion. Special attention is given to the tools creators have at use (such as Duets, Stitches, livestreams, short form of the video), as well as the circumstances that ensue when these tools are combined with the algorithm and the entire ecosystem of this app (such as the highest yet possibility of virality, pressure to optimize content to be ‘catchy’ and likable, fast release on other streaming apps). The article also investigates the TikTok-influenced image of the contemporary music industry, as well as the multifaceted use of sound as memes.

Abstract:Based on the rapid development of society, the pace of people's lives is getting faster and faster. Furthermore, it creates much fragmented time each day—for example, every day on the way to work or school. There may be 20 to 30 minutes of travel time, and if this time is not enough to accomplish something, it is called fragment time. So what is fragment time? Short video platforms are capturing this kind of fragmented time to get users to use short video software. Because the length of short videos is generally about 15 seconds, people can open the short video software when people are waiting for the elevator or getting up in the morning. Of course, this article mainly uses Tiktok, a short video software, to conduct an in-depth study on why many users are using it. The paper used the two easiest research methods to support completing this experiment. This study randomly selected 100 people to fill out the questionnaire to investigate how often TikTok is used by different age groups and what kind of videos are most attractive. TikTok is a creative music short video App focused on the new generation's dating community for young people. The rapid rise and development of short video firstly lie in its communication mode remarkably ADAPTS to the fragmented lifestyle of contemporary people. At the same time, the low threshold of short video production also allows more people to participate in the short video. Many of the viewers are also short video producers. In addition, the social nature of short videos has brought more heat. Sure, about 22% of TikTok users use the app for more than an hour a day[1]. As for what kind of video is attractive, the creator will find a precise positioning, and careful editing will have many viewers.

Abstract:In the context of the Internet era, the emergence and development of new media technology has affected many industries in society and spawned the birth and popularity of mobile short video apps represented by TikTok. This interactive new technology of TikTok has a huge influence on People's Daily life and on the traditional film industry and even the newly emerged "new media film industry". This study analyzes the impact of the interactive new technology of TikTok on the pre-production stage specifically. The impact happens in three primary angles. It demonstrates that TikTok is not just in a position to be used by filmmakers for their publicity. Meanwhile, it already started to reverse its influence on the front end of the movie industry chain. Through the method of literature research, this article gives a new definition of "new media film" and "short video", which is conducive to better-targeted research on TikTok-dominated short videos. At the same time, this study also subdivides the impact of short videos on the film industry based on the industrial chain, focusing on the impact on the pre-production stage of the film, which is rarely mentioned in previous studies.

Abstract:Social Media + Society, Volume 9, Issue 1, January-March 2023. This article examines consumer video activism tactics in China and their impact on Chinese consumers and society. Drawing upon 56 semistructured interviews and a case study analysis of Chinese online consumer protest in 2018, we argue that short-video-activism tactics have become an innovative repertoire of contention for Chinese consumers and Douyin, the "sister app" of TikTok, has become a real-time updated database of this repertoire. Using Douyin as a case study, we argue that it plays three key roles in mediating Chinese consumer activism: a techno-cultural construct that affords highly heterogeneous users to present everyday experiences via short videos; a multisided market that profoundly affects the tactics consumers choose to amplify their voices; and a governing entity that both moderates content for its users and simultaneously is subject to government regulations.

Abstract:Born in the era of rapid internet technology development and riding the wave of "the era of fragmentation," short videos have emerged as a compelling form of media communication and audio-visual art, capturing the attention of audiences in China and globally. As a significant subtype of short videos, plot-based short videos are influenced not only by traditional audio-visual media but also by online novels, one of the products of the internet era. As a result, there has been a convergence between plot-based short videos and online novels. This trend highlights how the phenomenon of online novel creation is increasingly manifesting in the content of these videos. By examining examples within TikTok (specifically referring to the Chinese version in this paper), it becomes apparent that online novel creation can significantly drive the development of plot-based short videos. However, based on the current situation, it is evident that this convergence also poses several challenges, thereby requiring the development of innovative solutions.
